PRAYER TO SEPTEMBER

“Poetry might be defined as the clear expression of mixed feelings.” —W.H. Auden

During July and August, two thousand twenty-five,
We waited day after day for rain to arrive.
But most every day dawned bright and filled with sun,
Of life-sustaining rain there was mostly none.

Once in a while a shower happened here or there,
The sun reappeared, moisture merging into dry air!
Water levels dropping as each day passed by,
Ponds, brooks and streams began running dry!

Grass turned dry, crunchy and brown,
Leaves changing colour early, fell to the ground!
As August progressed the situation became more dire,
Every careless action or spark ready to light a fire!

The sort of situation that sends worry into the heart,
Knowing not when or where the next fire might start!
A careless human act or a lightning strike,
Could cause a serious wildfire to ignite!

Lightning struck, a fire close to West Dalhousie took hold,
Spiraling out of control as it continued to unfold!
Filling hearts and minds with worry and dread,
Brave firefighters fighting to contain its spread!

On August twenty-second a massive hurricane passed on by,
Bringing some wind and a few clouds in the sky!
The wind was unwelcome, as it fanned the fire,
Instead of spreading moisture it made conditions dryer!

Though firefighters gave it their very best,
Fire eventually reached West Dalhousie filled with zest.
It raved and it roared, its appetite swelling,
Showing no mercy, consuming dwelling after dwelling!

August changed into September, the drought rolled on,
Every night turning into a sun-drenched dawn.
Water became precious in a land cracked and dry,
Clouds were scarce, blazing sun filled the sky.

Oh September on behalf of the drought and pain,
We beseech thee to cover the land with rain.
Let July and August be memories fleeting,
While you become the month worth meeting.
