At very long last, and after multiple delays, the United Methodist Church [UMC] convened and completed a General Conference [GC]. General Conference meets every four years and is the official body for determining church law and doctrine. GC was originally delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic, but was subsequently postponed year after year even after the crisis subsided. However, in the interim (2020-2023), 7800+ local UMC congregations left the denomination. Most joined the traditional/conservative Global Methodist Church (formed as a result of a pre-2020 agreement by all parties to amicably split the church), but others simply became independent. This was the case for 3 small UMC churches in my district.
With many conservatives having already exited, and others from Africa or other parts of the world unable to obtain Visas (more below) for travel to Charlotte, NC where GC was held, the progressive/liberal delegates to GC made drastic changes to the denomination’s stance on key issues (more below). While not unexpected, the hefty margins of “victory” in these votes indicate just how far the UMC has drifted from traditional Christian orthodoxy, and just how significant the conservative members (US and overseas) had been in defeating these same proposals in prior GCs.
Below is a summary of major changes approved in GC24:
- Approved a so-called “Regionalization Plan” essentially allowing various geographic segments of the UMC to be connected under one umbrella [UMC] but disagree on matters of doctrine.
- Removed language which defined marriage as between one man and one woman
- Removed language which prohibited non-heterosexual clergy from ordination
- Approved a budget which was 40%+ smaller than previous budgets (impact of local church disaffiliations)

My thoughts and reflections:
What follows are my opinions and thoughtful comments regarding GC2024 and are not meant to be taken as otherwise.
- Rather than a stopgap measure allowing the various UMC conferences around the world to stay jointly organized, the Regionalization Plan will, I believe, further hasten the dismantling of the UMC through attrition. Assume the American UMC becomes more progressive than even the changes enacted above. Will the African and Asian (more conservative conferences) want to stay “connected” to other churches with such liberal theology?
- The changes regarding human sexuality (definition of marriage – from Biblical to no definition; and ordination of pastors with various sexual relationships, versus traditional marriage and celibacy in singleness) represent huge steps away from Biblical orthodoxy to heterodoxy. While many anticipated this, the speed and majority of such votes are in my view quite sad and tragic. Not the Methodist Church of my youth.

The African Response
Some of you may have seen an African clergyman holding a Bible above his head proclaiming the Biblical stance on marriage, human sexuality, and Truth. That man was Jerry Kulah from Liberia. A former pastor of mine and his family served as missionaries to that African nation many years ago, alongside Jerry’s uncle, Bishop Arthur Kulah. Jerry voted against the changes on human sexuality, but he was in the minority. Nevertheless, his message was shared across social media and championed there.
As GC2024 came to a close, Pastor Kulah along with other African delegates posted a response which stated the following:
- GC changed the definition of marriage not because the Bible has changed, but because western culture has changed
- UMC chose to please man rather than God
- Many delegates from Africa (25%) could not attend because they were not invited in time
- African believers do not feel they are valued as equal partners in ministry
- In Africa, we do not believe we know better than Jesus, God, the Bible
- The African delegates want all to hear: we will never accept marriage as anything other than one man and one woman
- The Africans are devastated to be a part of a denomination with official theology that clearly contradicts the Word of God
I share the sentiments of my [strong in faith/Truth] brothers and sisters from Africa.

Postnote:
I currently belong to and attend a UMC local church, that discussed disaffiliation in the past year but chose not to pursue at the time. Like my African siblings in Christ, I have “important decisions to make about the future.”
But I do so in prayer and Study of God’s Word. Seeking the will of the Father for me in these matters. I pray for all UMC members and churches during the weeks and months ahead.
In Christ, and for His Kingdom.
