HOTSPOT ONE:
Summer 2025 is officially here, and the wave of tourists will soon be crashing into Seattle! If you’re looking for something off the beaten path (literally), check out one of the city’s coolest hidden gems—the Seattle Underground Tour in Pioneer Square.
If you live up on Queen Anne where I am, You have options: catch Bus 13 for a quick and easy ride, summon an Uber for a 10-minute dash, or channel your inner explorer and walk it—just about an hour on foot through the heart of the city. Either way, adventure awaits beneath the streets!

The Underground Tour makes its home in the streets below our oldest neighborhood in Seattle called Pioneer Square.
In Seattle, the Underground Tour in Pioneer Square is an absolute must. It’s not just one of the best attractions in the city—it’s a gritty, hilarious, and fascinating dive (literally) into Seattle’s past.
Back in 1889, the Great Seattle Fire tore through the city after a pot of glue in a cabinet shop caught fire. In a tragically comical twist, well-meaning men tried to put it out with water, not realizing it would ignite the glue even more—and boom! The entire town went up in flames. Everything burned to the ground… along with over a million rats (to which I say: good riddance!).
But here’s where it gets interesting: instead of rebuilding on the same level, Seattle was raised—literally—and the old city was buried beneath what’s now the Pioneer Square District. That forgotten underworld still exists, and the tour takes you right through it.
It’s rugged, quirky, and surprisingly funny. Be ready for uneven terrain, plenty of stairs, and a few dark corners. I was glad I wore sturdy shoes! The guides have a sharp wit and a real flair for storytelling—think Wild West meets stand-up comedy. And unlike your average tourist trap, this tour dives deep (pun intended) into local history with incredible detail and character.
Whether you’re a history buff, an urban explorer, or just someone looking for an adventure that’s off the map, this one’s for you. Go underground—you won’t regret it.
Below are a few photos from my visit. I have since been on this tour no less than 10 times. Every time I have family or friends in town, I have to take them.
Tip to make this Tour even more super fantastic: Be sure to call ahead or book online as the time slots fill up fast. Be sure also to give yourself about two hours to fully enjoy the experience.
