No birds were harmed at this time. Seems to be a pelican fishing.

A pre-dawn fire before a walk in the desert is a strong start for my new year. I wish all of you strength, peace, and joy in 2026.

And of course, a photo of FlossieB.

And the first millipede exoskeleton of the year.

Lana came into our lives almost 3 years ago. We were camping at Datil Well (New Mexico) and met her people, Matt and Abby.

Lana was a mature big dog, just starting to get a little gray at the muzzle. But when she and FlossieB got together, they were puppies again.

Lana first impressed me because she stayed with her people closely, didn’t need to be on a leash. A few liver treats, however, eventually convinced her to trot ahead of them towards my RV. If the door was open, she was inside, eyeing the dog-treat drawer.

As with many camping friends, we had only a short time together before we went our separate ways. I’m grateful to Matt and Abby and social media so that I could keep up on the adventures of this delightful family. The latest post told us that Lana had passed on. What a joy she was. RIP Lana.

Five years ago, this was my subject and meal: pomegranates from my brother’s trees.

When I was a child, we had the best pomegranate tree ever – huge, sweet dark red fruit. There were rules, however, to eating pomegranates. One, they were to be eaten outside. Two, we had to wear old clothes because there would be stains. That pomegranate tree will definitely be in my top 10 all-time favorite trees.

This is a black-and-white photo printed in the 1970s on whatever photo paper I could get at the time. It’s been in the sunlight now for a while. It’s transformed into its own style of art.

When the sun comes out, this is where they want to be.

FlossieB was featured on a shelter on Petfinder. I talked with folks there to say I wanted an older dog, maybe five or six years old. No puppy energy for me. They said she was about three years old.

I brought her to my vet for a check up. He declared ‘one year-old, maybe one and a half.’ Sigh. This was a puppy. Now when I look at those early photos, she is clearly young.

I had to choose a birthday for her so that I could remember how old she is. Now in early November, we celebrate her ‘at least’ birthday. This year she is at least seven years old.
It’s the first time I’ve seen this bird here. I think it might be a bit lost – there aren’t many oak trees in our area.
