Start with a thick ponytail holder that you stretch to make sure it will not break.

I use an I hook.  (I crochet tight, so use what hook works best for you.)

Leave about four inches of yarn at the start of the scrunchie.

Next single crochet (American crochet) around the ponytail holder. Slightly push your single crochet stitches together.

Join to your first single crochet stitch with a slip stitch.

*Chain 8 chain stitches. Slip stitch to the back loop of the next stitch.* Repeat this for all the back loops of your single crochet stitches.

(If you want longer loops add chain stitches, shorter loops reduce the number of chains per loop.)

Once you have completed the back loops *chain 8 and slip stitch into the front loop* of the first stitch.  Repeat this for all the front loops of your single crochet stitches.

When you have slipped stitched into front loop of your last stitch cut the yarn leaving about four inches of yarn.

Using a yarn needle take ending yarn under your first single crochet stitch and tie the ends together.  Weave the ends in through your single crochet stitch loops that are around the ponytail holder and cut off remaining yarn.

Head:

(Row 1)  Chain 7, crochet 1 hdc in 3rd chain from hook.  1 hdc in each chain, repeat until row 1 is finished. Counting the 2 chains skipped, six stitches total.

(Row 2) Increase to 12 stitches.  Chain 2, hdc in 1st stitch. 2 hdc in each stitch until the end of the row.

(Row 3) Increase to 18 stitches.  Chain 2, hdc in 1st stitch. 1 hdc in next stitch. *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next stitch*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 4) Increase to 24 stitches. Chain 2, hdc in 1st stitch. 1 hdc in next 2 stitches. *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 5) Increase to 30 stitches. Chain 2, hdc in 1st stitch. 1 hdc in next 3 stitches. *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 6) Increase to 36 stitches. Chain 2, hdc in 1st stitch. 1 hdc in next 4 stitches. *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 4 stitches*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Rows 7 through 10) Chain 2, and 1 hdc in each stitch. (Do not increase in these rows.)

(Row 11) Reduce to 30 stitches. Chain 2, hdctog in the next 2 stitches.  1 hdc in the next 4 stitches. *hdctog the next two stitches, 1 hdc in the next 4 stitches.*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 12) Reduce to 24 stitches. Chain 2, hdctog in the next 2 stitches.  1 hdc in the next 3 stitches. *hdctog the next two stitches, 1 hdc in the next 3 stitches.*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 13) Reduce to 18 stitches. Chain 2, hdctog in the next 2 stitches.  1 hdc in the next 2 stitches. *hdctog the next two stitches, 1 hdc in the next 2 stitches.*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 14) Reduce to 12 stitches. Chain 2, hdctog in the next 2 stitches.  1 hdc in the next 1 stitches. *hdctog the next two stitches, 1 hdc in the next 1 stitches.*    repeat * until the end of the row.

(Row 15) Reduce to 6 stitches. Chain 2, hdctog the next 2 stitches.  *hdctog the next 2 stitches.*    repeat * until the end of the row.

Sew the end together, sew the side up and fill with stuffing, then sew the other end up.

I used large buttons for the eyes. Please use age appropriate materials for eyes or any other facial features you want to add.

Legs:

I used an I hook. Chain 32 and in the 3rd chain from the hook 4hdc, *in the next chain crochet 5 hdc.*     Repeat * until the end of the chain.  Sew legs to the bottom of the head.  made eight legs.  They can be made any length or number.
