For this assignment we were asked to tell a story or present pictures that represent us. I decided to take pictures at Teel Collision Center in Pocatello Idaho. At first I wanted to focus on portrait photography but found that everyones schedule and times never coincided with mine. Teel Collision focuses on total repair of wrecked cars and small fender benders. Recently they have started to bring on new customers doing restoration of classic cars. Unfortunately they only had one older car to look at and take pictures of. I was able to observe and see what it takes from start to finish to fix a wrecked car. I was surprised the amount of attention and detail that is required to perform such a trade.
Assignment #6 Color Seduction
For this assignment we were asked to apply what we have learned about black and white conversion, and transform pictures of our choice. By doing so I was able to see a transformation of overall feeling in the picture. For example, the picture of the motorcycle engine in color appeared to be vibrant, but when I converted it to black and white it gave it a rustic feel. It also gave it a classic old feel to it.
Assignment #5
This assignment was pretty fun. It was a challenge for sure It was very windy where I was, it’s no wonder why they have windmills out there! Until this assignment I had never really understood the importance of time-released exposures. It was really fun to experiment with the exposures. Because it was mostly black when I was looking through the viewfinder, it was fun to see what appeared on the preview screen after I took the shot.
Assignment #4
For this assignment we were asked to look over past photos we have taken and use them to develop a theme. After careful consideration I decided that much of what I chose to take of pictures of are people. Instead of making just people my theme, I decided to take a closer look. All of these pictures I took tell a story of life or what the person might be thinking. Either because of the way the picture is taken or the expression on their faces. It was hard to get most of the people to relax and let me take not only their picture, but understand there life and what is being portrayed from the expression on their face.
Assignment #3: Outdoor Portraits
This was a very interesting assignment mostly because I was the subject. Right away I realized that it wasn’t going to be like other assignments in the past. It was hard to get relaxed. The hardest thing was setting up the camera and tripod and then running to pose in time before the shutter released. A remote would have been very handy in this assignment. Regardless, I still had fun and enjoyed the challenge. I think I took on average 30 pictures per final shot I used. I would be broke if I had to us a film camera for this assignment. Thank goodness for modern technology and digital photography!
Photo Assignment #8: Photo Essay
For our final assignment for this class,, we were tasked with the job of finding a story to tell with pictures. My original idea was to shadow a foot doctor for a day and take pictures of some of the responsibilities that he has. His schedule and ours never matched up because I had to be with my son during the times that he was available. I guess you could say the idea, “A day of life with Carter,” sort of presented itself. Carter is very active and enjoys playing at his grandmas house almost every day. Carter was very hard to take pictures of, thus making this assignment the most difficult and most time consuming. Some of my struggles included correct lighting, and sharpness of focus on the subject. He likes to run everywhere he goes so to stop time sort of speak was hard to do but in the end rewarding when I finally got a good picture!
Zip Codes Project: Lava Hot Springs
For this assignment we were able to visit one of Idaho’s great tourist attractions. Lava Hot Springs. We were tasked to find a particular theme in the town. To me it became quite clear that people form all over travel here to escape the different stresses of everyday life. It seemed as though every corner of the town had signs up for accommodations including, lodging, breakfast and bed, massages, and hot pools. It seemed a little quiet while we were there but I know from experience this is not the case as the summer progresses.
