Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – JULY 2024

A new month is upon us bringing over 160 fresh poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in July 2024.

With Midsummer in our rearview, we’re at height of the summer holiday season and there’s a new nautical writing prompt for July over on the blog exploring beach culture and our love of the seaside. Feel free to dip your writing toe in the warm shallows!

I had expected to spend July hosting La Dolce Vita, the new Italian-themed 30-day summer writing challenge but due to recent tech upgrades (to meet the new Google & Yahoo email protocols), I’m holding fire while the algorithms update and running the challenge in August instead. So there’s still plenty of time to book your ticket and jet off with us on an Italian writing odyssey!

This also means I have some unexpected free time in July and to mark the middle of the year (and keep me out of mischief), I’m running a flash sale on my one-to-one mentoring sessions – 30% off on all bookings until Mon 8 July. Mentoring is an opportunity to have an experienced poet read a group of your poems, give a fresh perspective on your writing, and valuable advice to refine and polish your work for submitting to literary journals, publishers and competitions.

The one-hour online mentoring session can be used to discuss your poems in more detail, areas for developing your work, any problems you may be experiencing in your writing, and to answer your questions about revising and submitting your work for publication.

More information and booking details at the link below – no discount code required, the reduction is made automatically at checkout.

If you find the monthly submissions list useful, and would like to show your appreciation to keep it as an open resource for writers in 2024, please click one of the links below and make a small contribution – a €12 donation is suggested but any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – JUNE 2024

Summer is officially here (whoop!) and with it a brand new list of over 160 poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunitiesopen or with deadlines in June 2024.

We’re currently celebrating a Bank Holiday weekend here in Ireland, along with the beginning of Pride Month and there’s a writing prompt for June over on the blog exploring and celebrating Irish LGBTQ+ poetry. Take it as your inspiration and let your words Shine!

For the past nine months, I’ve been learning Italian and my love for Bella Italia has blossomed into a brand new 30-day writing challenge for Summer 2024when we’ll be taking our inspiration from the Italian philosophy of La Dolce Vita!

From the heart of the Mediterranean, the influence of the ‘Bel Paese’ has reached far across Europe and the globe, through Empire, exploration and immigration, carrying with it its rich cultural heritage, spanning language, history, philosophy, science, industry, art, music, literature, film, fashion, food, wine and much more.

This July, join me for an Italian idyll and 30 days of writing prompts where we’ll explore ‘the sweet life’ and discover exactly what the Romans (and the Venetians, Milanese, Florentines, Sicilians…) have done for us, though your daily writing practice.

La Dolce Vita | An Italian Odyssey kicks off on 1 July and is booking now. I’m really looking forward to this one and do hope you can join us!

There’s a special 20% early bird discount for email subscribers and FOUR free places available to low income and under-represented writers — click on the button below and go to the FAQs for more details. Discount rates and scholarship applications are open until 18 June 2024.

THIS HALLoWEEN, ENTER THE SHADOWLANDS…

Join me to peel back the thin veil between worlds and illuminate the darkness of the season. Shadowlands | Illuminate the Darkness is an all new 30-day Writing Challenge, inspired by Carl Jung’s Archetypes and the universal themes of storytelling, to help you put pen to paper every day in November.

At the heart of all storytelling, there are narratives so deeply resonant of the shared human experience that we never tire of hearing them.

Plato described them as ‘forms of intuition’; Swiss psychologist Carl Jung called them Archetypes — a rich tapestry of patterns and symbols woven through the collective unconscious, offering a template for understanding human behaviour.

From Homer’s Odyssey to George Lucas’ Star Wars, we are endlessly enthralled by the exploits of these archetypes — The Hero, The Magician, The Innocent, The Mother, The Outlaw etc. — as they embark on hazardous quests and fall prey to the seductions of the Dark Side.

Join me this November to explore the universal themes of Jung’s archetypes and their legacy in literature, art and pop culture. Together, we will harness the power of opposites and learn to balance light and the dark in your own writing.

BENEFITS OF THE WRITING CHALLENGE:

  • Make a daily commitment to your writing.
  • Find new focus, inspiration and motivation.
  • Embrace the blank page and quiet the voice of your inner critic.
  • Experiment with fresh styles and subjects.
  • Connect with a supportive community.
  • Write at a time and a pace that suits you.

HOW DOES THE WRITING CHALLENGE WORK?

Each day you’ll receive an email with a writing prompt or creative task, example poems, writing tips plus oodles of inspiration. Set aside 15 minutes to free-write around the prompt or do the task. Don’t worry about whether it is good or bad; enjoy playing with ideas and trying something new.

If you enjoy working as part of a community, there is also a Facebook option, where you can post your piece, an extract or an update on how you’re getting on with the task. The group receives encouragement and support by reading and responding to each other’s work.

And in addition to the usual prompts, we’ll also welcome special guest Irish poet and writer, Eleanor Hooker, recipient of the Michael Hartnett Award 2022 and the Arts Council Markievicz Award 2021 — who’ll be reading from her latest collection ‘Of Ochre and Ash’ (Dedalus Press, 2021) and chatting about the work of poetry.

At the end of the Challenge, there’s an online group reading — an opportunity to share your work — which is open to everyone who has taken part.

WHO IS THE WRITING CHALLENGE SUITABLE FOR?

The 30 day writing events are designed to suit writers at all levels. Originally, they were created with the beginner or emerging writer in mind – the daily prompts are jam-packed with ideas to stimulate your imagination and get you writing each day.

However, we also have experienced writers who enjoy taking part in the challenges as a way to shift focus after working on other projects, to shake up their writing routine or to generate new project ideas.

The asynchronous nature of the challenge also makes it ideal for neurodivergent writers.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTED RATES?

Yes, there are a number of free places available for low income and under-represented writers — click on the button below and go to the FAQs for more details. Scholarship applications are welcome until Friday 28 October 2023.

Or join my mailing list to receive early bird discounted access to writing events.

All the details are at the link and if you have any questions, please drop me a line and I’ll be happy to help.

Join the Summer Fling: 30 DAYS OF PLay WRITING Event in August 2023

Next month, I’ll be bringing the larks and fun with an all new 30-day writing event — Summer Fling: 30 Day’s of Play, kicking off on 1 August 2023. If you’d like to kick up your heels and indulge in a little creative playtime, this is your chance!

Research shows that embracing our playfulness boosts self-confidence, sharpens problem-solving and communication skills, hones adaptability and resilience, and improves mental and emotional wellbeing. In short, it transforms our quality of life.

The word ‘play’ comes from the Old English pleg(i)an meaning ‘to exercise’, and plega meaning ‘brisk movement’, both of which are related to the Middle Dutch word pleien meaning ‘to leap for joy, to dance’. In modern English, play covers everything from childhood activity, sport and exercise, games and gambling, to musical and dramatic performance.

For Summer Fling | 30 Days of Play, we’ll be reconnecting with our inner child, embracing the beginner’s mindset and trying out lots of new ideas in our writing, just for the fun of it. It’s the perfect way to shake up your writing routine, break out of a rut, clear a writing block, or simply let loose on the page!

In addition to the usual prompts, creative exercises, images, music and writing tips, we’ll also welcome special guest UK poet and artist, Helen Ivory, whose practice includes everything from painting to collage to felting — she’ll be treating us to work from ‘Wunderkammer: New & Selected Poems’ (Mad Hat Press, 2023), and chatting about bringing a sense of playfulness to our work.

There are a number of free places available for low income and under-represented writers — click on the link below and go to the FAQs for more details. Scholarship applications are welcome until 20 July 2023.

For more information and to book, go to Summer Fling: 30 Day’s of Play on the Wordbox website.

If you haven’t taken part before, the 30-Day Writing event is the ideal accompaniment to a daily writing practice, with bite-sized daily exercises, inspiration, opportunity to explore, and a supportive and encouraging community of writers in the private Facebook group.

For those of you using this time to send your work out, there are still plenty of opportunities available in the July Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities list!

I completely understand that this might not be the right timing for you to take part and that’s OK. Nurture your creative self in any way you can – DO WHAT YOU LOVE – play, read, make art, make something with your hands, knit, sew, mend, grow seeds, bring something new into the world this August.

If you’d like to join in the fun, all the information is on the website – just click the link below for details – and if you have any questions, please drop me a line.

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – June 2022

Hello Summer! The poetry list is back with over 140 poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in June 2022.

It’s been a slow start to the month for me kicking off with an internet outage – Mercury retrograde or a reminder from the Universe that summer is a time to slow down and take things easy? History will decide. Despite tech woes, the Fool’s Gold | Writing the Tarot workshop went without a hitch last weekend and the Writing Slant | Making a Poem 6-week course is now up and running, with a new group of writers eager to develop and hone their craft. Last week, we looked at expanding the world of the poem and drew inspiration from Barbara Guest, Annie Dillard, Robert MacFarlane, Maggie Smith and more.

Ideas are already brewing for a new summer writing challenge – look out for more information at the beginning of July. And, if you want to get the scoop on upcoming events before everyone else, take advantage of early-bird prices, AND have the poetry list delivered straight to your inbox each month, jump on the mailing list here.

Whatever you’re up to with your writing this month – drafting, honing, editing or submitting – I wish you every luck and success. If you appreciate the monthly list and would like to support it, please consider making a small donation via the Paypal donation button (right) and/or share this post on your own blog or social media pages. Thank you!

Black Lives Matter: What Can I Do As a Writer?

For those of you waiting for the new list of poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in June 2020, it will be published tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

I’ve held it back a day for #BlackOutTuesday – to show respect for the death of George Floyd, highlight the senseless loss of black lives due to police brutality and protest the disturbing use of state force against the citizens of the US right now.

We all live in a world shaped by racism and now more than ever, we need to acknowledge and understand that Black Lives Matter. This quote from a 2014 essay by Scott Woods is particularly resonant.IMG_20200602_114203_465

In immediate response to the murder of George Floyd, here’s a great summary of direct action options from Black Lives Matter.

If you want to better understand the issues surrounding racism, the POC Online Classroom is curated by and for people of colour and has a fantastic database of reading and resources, including articles, essays and poems on everything from identity to organizing to self care with writing by Audre Lorde, Bell Hooks, Angela Davis, Langston Hughes, Marlon James, Angel Nafis and more. Here are a few relevant sections to check out:

I’ve been thinking about how I could better educate myself and help amplify black voices within the literary community. If you feel as helpless as I do and want to know what you can do to take a stand against racism, here are some of the things I’m pledging to:

  1. Make a donation – to the family of George Floyd, to Black Lives Matter, to Reclaim the Block who work to make communities like George’s safer, without police intervention, or to Minnesota Freedom Fund to help with bail funds for protesters who have been arrested. In Ireland, you can tackle racism by supporting MASI (Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland) or MERJ (Migrant & Ethnic-Minorities for Reproductive Justice). Petition your local TDs and councillors to end Direct Provision. If you are in the UK, check out this poem and list of resources by poet, Salena Godden.
  2. Educate myself. Do the work to understand the insidious nature of racism and how it impacts on everyone’s lives. None of us are free from its impact, as Scott Woods explains above. Don’t ask black friends or colleagues to do this work for me. The information is widely available. There are lots of resources being shared under the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag on Twitter and Instagram right now. Here are a few ideas to get started:
    • How to Be an Anti-Racist, Ibram X. Kendi;
    • This Book is Anti-Racist: 20 Lessons on How to Wake Up, Take Action, and Do the Work, Tiffany Jewell;
    • Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, Reni Eddo-Lodge;
    • Me and White Supremacy, Layla F. Saad;
    • Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehesi Coates;
    • So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo;
    • This thread on racism in Ireland by Dr. Justine Akase.
  3. Support the work of black writers and poets. As a writer, read and share their work. Here are some great books to get started:
    • Citizen, Claudia Rankine;
    • Don’t Call Us Dead, Danez Smith;
    • Incendiary Art, Patricia Smith;
    • The Evidence of Things Not Seen, James Baldwin (pretty much anything by Baldwin);
    • White Teeth, Zadie Smith;
    • The Black Flamingo, Dean Atta;
    • Don’t Touch My Hair, Emma Dibiri;
    • This Hostel Life, Melatu Uche Okorie;
    • Correspondences: An Anthology to Call for an End to Direct Provision, ed. Stephen Rea and Jessica Traynor;
    • The Jhalak Prize is also a great reference point for recent work by British BAME writers.
  4. Amplify. I actively seek out and highlight submission opportunities for Black writers, as well as other marginalised groups, in my monthly poetry list but am painfully aware how few journals and competitions make their work a priority. As an editor or publisher, please ensure your submissions policy is inclusive toward black and other marginalised groups of writers. Make space for their voices.
  5. Listen. Who am I following on social media? Whose voices and experiences am I paying attention to? Am I only listening to voices and experiences that chime with my own? Break out of the echo chamber. Accept that my opinion is neither relevant nor necessary in every conversation.
  6. Know that I will make mistakes. Know that those closest to me will make mistakes and some will not be interested in doing the work. Don’t dig in behind these errors. Learn from them. Apologise and pledge to do better. Continue to hold myself and others accountable for words or actions that are harmful to others. Do this with compassion.

Will you join me?

Don’t forget, when buying books, please try and support local, independent and/or black-owned bookshops.

For some poetry to read right now, here’s a great compilation of Poems of Protest, Resistance, and Empowerment by Poetry Foundation. It includes one of my all-time favourite poems: Rosa Parks by Nikki Giovanni.

…they noticed his stutter and probably understood
why his mother wanted him out of Chicago during the summer
when school was out. Fourteen-year-old Black boys with limps
and stutters are apt to try to prove themselves in dangerous ways
when mothers aren’t around to look after them.

Rosa Parks – Nikki Giovanni

Update: Here’s a fantastic thread of poems and recommended reading by black poets from Luther X. Hughes on Twitter.

Update: Here’s a link to an Antiracist Allyship Starter Pack from Kandice Le Blanc’s post ‘Dear White People, This is What We Want You to Do’, with thanks to writer and editor Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi for sharing on FB.

Update: Here’s a link to Racial Equity Tools: Arts & Culture Strategies, with thanks to Chiamaka, as above, for sharing on FB.

Update: For those who prefer visual materials, Two Thumbs Up: Movies and Documentaries to Use (and Avoid) When Teaching Civil Rights, an article by Hasan Kwame Jeffries at Zinn Education Project, is a great run-down of good, bad and downright ugly documentaries and films covering civil rights history.

I realise this only scratches the surface of a pervasive problem and if you have any other ideas or reading recommendations, please feel free to add them in the comments section below. I’ll keep updating this post as more ideas about useful information come to me.

Submitting to Poetry Journals & Competitions: A Beginner’s Guide

Chatting to writers during the recent #JanuaryWriteOff 30 Day Challenge, it became clear many people find the process of submitting to poetry journals and competitions quite daunting. From formatting to bios to fees, there can be a lot of hoops to jump through and I thought it might be useful to walk you through the process.

What Goes into a Submission?

When you’re preparing work to send out into the world, you will need to put together a package of information comprising some, or all, of the following:

  • Your work, presented in accordance with the competition or journal’s Submission Guidelines;
  • A short writer’s bio;
  • A cover letter and/or a completed application form;
  • An author’s photo;
  • Competition or Submission fees (if applicable).

Let’s take a look at each of these in more detail. Continue reading

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – AUGUST 2025

Background graphic shows an open notebook and pen on a wooden table with a coral-colored filter over the image. Text overlay reads: Publishing Your Work - August 2025; Poetry & Writing Submissions - Journals, Competitions, Bursaries, Residencies.

Hello again,

A new month begins and with it comes over 150 poetry competitions, writing submissions and literary opportunities open or with deadlines in August 2025.

Last month I shared my crowdfunding campaign to help me move on from the crushing consequences of the 2015 Tracker Mortgage Scandal in Ireland, and I’ve been blown away by the response I’ve received from family, friends, peers, this community and even complete strangers.

Thank you so much for your donations, your messages of solidarity, and for carrying word of this campaign further that I ever could on my own, through sharing with your own networks and on social media.

With your help, I have almost reached my original target and have been able to put some of my goals into action, but there have also been setbacks.

A few items are proving more expensive than I’d budgeted for, as well as kind offers of assistance falling through, through no fault of those who wanted to help. It means I have to adjust the target to take on the extra cost of tasks which are beyond my capacity as a disabled person, including house clearing, disposal, transport and storage.

I am continuing to fundraise to cover these emergency costs in August and if you would like to show your appreciation for these monthly submission lists, here are 4 ways you can help.

1. Shop the Summer Sale – 40% Off Self-Study Creative Writing Courses

3. Buy a Signed Copy of my Poetry Collection

4. Make a Direct Donation

If you’d like to show your appreciation of these monthly lists which I’ve been producing since 2014, or simply help out a writer in need, please make a direct donation below. Every penny counts.

If you are unable to donate please consider sharing a link to either the sale or the GoFundMe campaign with your own writing network and/or social media.

Keep Writing

Thank you for being part of this community and I urge you to keep nurturing your own creativity. With so many terrible things happening around us, it is our responsibility to hold a mirror up to the world and capture what it means to be alive, if only to try and understand it for ourselves.

Whatever you’re up to with your writing this month — drafting, honing, editing or submitting — I wish you every luck and success.

All the best,
Angela x

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – DECEMBER 2024

It’s the end of the year but before the festivities begin, there’s still time to let your words take wing with one of over 160 poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in December 2024.

This is usually a time for reflection, looking back over the past 12 months and making plans for the year ahead. There are lots of exciting new things coming up with Wordbox in 2025 but first I’d like to apologise for the absence of the list in November, and share a little of an email I sent to my subscribers last month.

WHY NO NOVEMBER LIST?

‘As many of you already know, I’m an autistic writer with ADHD, and a few other neurospicy side dishes for good measure. I’m late diagnosed, so for decades I tried to behave like everyone around me and burnt myself to a crisp. The biggest areas I have to be careful around are energy levels, information processing and task management.

In October, I received some bad news about a long-running hard-fought situation and it knocked me for six. My autism has played a big part in the negative outcome and I’ve been wrestling with autistic overwhelm and shutdown ever since. Some days have been better than others but on the whole, I’m struggling. If you have been expecting to hear from me and haven’t, this is why.

I share this only because I receive emails and messages asking where the list is and I’m not able to respond to these individually. For those of you who have been generous enough to reach out and/or support the list financially, thank you for your donation and your understanding.’

I work hard to give back to this community but the first task of every single day is always wrangling with my own unruly brain. For example, I have been trying to write and post this list for over a week now but every day my brain responded with a big fat ‘Nope’. My fellow ADHD-ers will understand just how fun* executive dysfunction can be… 😑

*utterly excruciating and exasperating

I think there’s something about this time of year as well, the short days, the long nights, that this kind of brain struggles with. I feel a very strong pull toward the idea of hibernation, rest and sleep, and like many of you I am looking forward, not to parties, but to the downtime of the festive season. Bring Hygge on!

WHAT’S COMING UP AT WORDBOX

In keeping with the idea of reflection and planning ahead, I’m running the 2024 Writers Round-Up on Sun 27 December – an online workshop and Pay-What-You-Can-Afford event, to help you take stock of yourself as a writer in 2024 and identify where you want to focus your efforts in the year ahead.

Often we don’t give ourselves credit for what we’ve done or take time to enjoy our successes. In this session, I’ll guide you with a series of fun and probing questions to help you frame the work of writing in a positive way, and carry a renewed sense of engagement into 2025.

To kick-start the New Year with a flurry of new draft poems, join me for The Frozen World | Going to Extremes, focused on wintering, survival and the cold extremities of both the natural and the human world. This new 4-week course comprises email writing prompts every weekday and a creative adventure for the weekend, and kicks off on 6 January 2025.

The new format gives a little more breathing space at the weekends, time to play or to catch-up if necessary, and the price has been adjusted to take this into account, making the experience more accessible and affordable.

As always, there are 4no. free scholarship spots available for low income or under-represented writers (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodivergent, working class etc.) on the 30-day writing challenge. See FAQs section at the link for more info and send your applications before 23 December 2024.

Also coming up in January are two new series to help with editing and publishing your work. 52 Ways to Kill a Poem is a new weekly email series for 2025, to help you apply poetry craft to those abandoned first drafts and raise them from the ashes, and a new online seminar series Words Unboxed – Submitting to Journals, focuses on the practicalities of sending work out for publication. More info and booking at the links.

THE POETRY LIST IN 2025

The list has been around in one form or another for ten years. Each list takes around 15-20 working hours to source, write and disseminate, and this year it has already received over 140,000 unique visitors from 99 countries and territories worldwide.

I have always wanted to keep the list as an open resource accessible to everyone, which would be possible if enough people made a small contribution toward its upkeep, and although I am lucky enough to have a small number of regular contributors, it doesn’t cover the costs involved.

Last December, I called for 250 readers to contribute a one-off donation of €12 or a subscription of €1 per month via the Annual Christmas Appeal, to safeguard the list for another year. Many responded with greater sums and I’m hugely grateful for their generosity and dedication to supporting this as a free resource for the writing community.

However, it still took 11 months to reach a fairly modest target, mainly because I hadn’t taken account of the payment company fees. The alternative is to turn the list into a Substack-type arrangement, only available to those who can afford it, at a cost of around €60/year or €6/month.

I don’t want to do this, and if the cost is spread widely, it can remain a resource for all.

If 250 people — that’s around 0.2% of readers — contributed a one-off donation of €15 or a subscription of €1.25 per month via the Annual Christmas Appeal, it would safeguard the list for another year.

If you can help, please donate via one of the donation links below.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

As ever, I remain grateful for the understanding and encouragement of this wonderful community of writers, those who participate in the poetry events and those who read this blog. I love working with you and helping you to send your work into the world. Thank you so much for your support throughout this year and I hope these lists have helped pave the way to literary success. If you are in a position to give back (see below) it is very much appreciated.

When writing your holiday gift shopping lists, please remember to shop local and support writers, small presses and independent bookstores this Christmas.

I wish you a happy, healthy, safe and peaceful holiday season and the very best of luck in sending out your poems this month. Take care and I look forward to seeing you in 2025!

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS REQUEST

Creating this list is a labour of love, taking the best part of 15-20 hours to source, organise, and write each month. If you find it useful and would like to show your appreciation, please click the button below and make a small contribution.

The competitions list is read between 11,000-14,500 times each month. If 250 readers can contribute €15, it will cover the processing fees plus the cost of my time (at a very basic level of pay) and ensure the list remains accessible to all in 2025. That’s €15 per year for all the time saved sourcing up-to-date submissions info each month. Will you help?

To everyone who has contributed this year, thank you so much for your kindness and generosity in valuing this work. Wishing you peace and love for the holiday season and all good things for you and your writing in 2025.

All the best,
Angela x

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – September 2024

Autumn is on its way and with this new season of mellow fruitfulness comes over 150 fresh poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in September 2024.

And we’re dipping into those back to school memories for inspiration in a new writing prompt for September over on the blog exploring the best and worst of our educational experiences. Recall your glory days or exorcise those demons, once and for all!

A new series of 8-week Autumn Poetry group workshops have just begun and there is still one spot available in both the Wednesday and Sunday afternoon sessions. As these groups are already underway, I’m happy to offer a discount for the missed first session. If you’re interested and would like to join, hit reply and I’ll send you the details.

September also marks Wordbox’s third anniversary! 🎉🎉🎉

The idea was born during a writing retreat at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Co. Monaghan, after a couple of days of thought-provoking conversation with other artists and writers about how we create sustainable working lives.

I was already teaching and mentoring for literary organisations at this time but I wanted to do things differently. Over the course of a day, I mapped out how I wanted to grow as both a writer and a teacher/mentor on a series of record cards, strewn across the workspace floor.

I also planned a book using this same method – it’s still ‘cooking’ though!

The cards sat in a drawer until COVID-19 and lockdown created the space and time for me to go back again, and figure out how to put these ideas into action. I took a number of business courses to bring my entrepreneurial skills up to date and in September 2021, everything came together under the new Wordbox banner.

To celebrate its 3rd birthday, I’ll be sharing a few special events and offers over the course of this month – if you haven’t already, sign up to the mailing list to avoid missing out!

If you find the monthly submissions list useful, and would like to show your appreciation to keep it as an open resource for writers in 2024, please click one of the links below and make a small contribution – a €12 donation is suggested but any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – August 2024

The summer may be on the turn but never mind because there are over 140 fresh poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in August 2024.

La Dolce Vita, the new Italian-themed 30-day summer writing challenge hit the ground running at the beginning of the month and its not to late to join in the fun, if you fancy challenging yourself to writing a poem-a-day for 30 days – details and booking information at the link above.

As it’s back-to-school season, we have a new calendar of online poetry workshop groups kicking off at the beginning of September, with daytime, evening and weekend options available. These are eight-week online poetry workshops for writers to read, discuss and receive essential feedback on their work.

Held on Zoom, the workshop group size is deliberately kept small – only 4-5 people – to ensure your poems will receive plenty of attention and thoughtful feedback. These sessions are ideal for testing ideas or putting poems through their paces, if you’re planning to send your work out to magazines or competitions.

Numbers are strictly limited – more information and booking details at the link below.

If you find the monthly submissions list useful, and would like to show your appreciation to keep it as an open resource for writers in 2024, please click one of the links below and make a small contribution – a €12 donation is suggested but any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Poetry Competitions, Submissions & Opportunities – May 2024

Happy May Day! Another month rolls around with a brand new list of over 150 poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in May 2024.

Today is also the Irish celebration of Bealtaine, one of the traditional fire festivals of the Celtic calendar and you can explore into these ancient summer rituals in a brand new writing prompt on the blog.

We’ve just finished up our NaPoWriMo 30-day writing challenge Songs of a Pagan Place | Writing the Irish Myths & Legends with a fantastic group reading – it’s also a real pleasure to hear the work generated by these courses and I was blown away by the imagination and talent these writers brought to the materials. Congrats to everyone who took part!

Coming up this month, I’ll be running my popular 6-week intermediate course starting 22 May – Writing Slant | Making a Poem which takes a deep dive into the making of a poem. It’s the perfect way to revisit all those first drafts and put them through their paces before sending them out for publication.

And in June, I’ll be running a couple of daytime 4-week Poetry Workshop groups on Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoons, which are filling up fast, so best be quick!

If you find the monthly submissions list useful, and would like to show your appreciation to keep it as an open resource for writers in 2024, please click one of the links below and make a small contribution – a €12 donation is suggested but any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.
