Software Piracy

Standard

We always hear the saying, nothing is for free. Yes!  Perhaps a lot of people would agree. Anything and everything in this generation comes with a price. This affects people in developing countries like the Philippines.  Most Filipinos usually describe their life as “isang kahig, isang tuka” and as much as they want to buy their wants, money becomes the inhibiting factor. Their money is just enough to buy their basic needs and sometimes it still seems not enough.Money is what we pay for the material or service we received. But then, it is always limited.

If we don’t have enough to buy food and clothing then the possibility is that we don’t spend on any other things. Spending on legal copies of software, for example, is too much for the common people. Although it may be considered as an investment, the people will still consider the price. The people will still go for the cheaper software copies. The people could not be blamed. This issue on piracy may be an effect to the people’s contingency in making the software available to them in a lesser cost.

Piracy affects software companies which may destroy the revenue stream of companies. These companies often become economically unstable because software pirates have decided to steal their software and make it available to others. Companies must protect their software and one of is by providing protection within the software itself. Online activation can also protect the software. Through the license key, the users can unlock the trial edition to full edition and that at lest protects the software from invalid keys and let the company disable keys that get leaked into the internet.Another is through a copy protection on the CD media. However, the copy protection schemes can also be expensive. Software Piracy can also be battled if the people will know the effects and disadvantages of having a pirated software.

In my opinion, software piracy can’t be fully eliminated because people will always find a way to get what they want at a cheaper value. The software will be cracked with or without protection. Software companies should focus more on improving their software. After all, creating software is intended to make the lives of people easier, well, next after profit.

Knowledge Management

Standard

thIn this world, nothing is constant but change – everything perishes and everyone leaves. It is perhaps an unfortunate event that saddens us but because the person has left a memory or a legacy this have allowed us to move on and move forward.

Most organizations have experienced changes not only in the policies but also of the people. When an employee leaves, someone as skillful and knowledgeable as he is will be the best for the position. Organizations, however, must assume the responsibility of continuously capacitating its employees. As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power but knowledge sharing is empowerment.” It is through Knowledge Management (KM) where people are empowered by the knowledge shared with them.

Knowledge Management refers to a multi-disciplined approach to achieving organizational objectives by making the best use of knowledge. KM focuses on processes such as acquiring, creating and sharing knowledge and the cultural and technical foundations that support them. The DILG has long been promoting Knowledge Management  through the Local Governance Regional Resource Center (LGRRC) in the pursuit of excellence in local governance. The LGRRC serves as a repository of all knowledge products especially the best practices of the LGUs that will be shared with other LGUs. Aside from the LGRRC, KM is also present in terms of giving technical assistance to clients where tacit knowledge is transferred as explicit knowledge.

One problem faced by KM in DILG is the diminishing number of pool of champions/ officers that specializes in certain fields.  They are now leaving a legacy to the new generation officers who are on their way of acquiring more knowledge and skills that will contribute in the achievement of the organizational goals.

BI – Be it!

Standard

We often need a lot of things in life. We have our basic needs to live and we also have our wants. One of the common things in our society is that people tend to live and work not just to have enough but to have a little bit more of luxury and comfort. As humans, we will definitely think of ways to make life easy, fun, and exciting without having to sacrifice quality – ways to improve our lives.

Almost all of us are familiar with business intelligence. Business intelligence (BI) is a set of theories, methodologies, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information. This information is used  for reporting, online analytical processing, data mining, process mining, benchmarking, and business performance management.  Technically BI is for business purposes – to make tasks like monitoring, assessment, and evaluation easier. This minimizes cost and maximizes the probability for a high profit. Organizations should think that it an investment that could possibly help in decision making processes. This will also aid in the human resource management of the organization in terms of tracking the performance of each employee. This will somehow be a tool in recognizing the exemplary performance of employees.

What we get from Business Intelligence depends on where, who, and how we use it. Eventually, this will be part of all organizations that continuously think of ways to improve.

Should I Go For It?

ImageThe internet is making the lives of many people easier. Imagine that in just one click, I can get what I want without the hassle of making it to the store. That’s what’s in today, ONLINE SHOPPING.

I may not have the experience and I may not know how exactly it’s done but then almost all my friends share their experiences with me and what online shopping has given them. First, CONVENIENCE – I pay, they deliver, I am satisfied. In just one click, I have what I want. All I have to do is wait for it to be delivered; and second, IT SAVES TIME. I don’t have to go to the store to buy all the things I want. If I were to buy three things online, it would be bags, books, and DVDs/CDs. I will spend no worries if they would perfectly fit or look good on me. I will spend time thinking to buy or not to buy shoes, colognes/perfumes, and ready-to-wear clothes. I will be unsure if they would fit or not but I would change my mind if I already have a physical basis of the brand/collection. However, I will never buy appliances, cars, gadgets and the likes. If I am going to buy these items, it would be best if I have seen them physically, see if it is working, and since these things are expensive, it would require me to ensure that what I’m going to get is of quality and brand new.

Perhaps this ONLINE SHOPPING may tempt me, but for now, I WILL SAY NO. Yes there are a lot of advantages but personally, I don’t like to put SECURITY at risk.

Outsourcing IT Security

Outsourcing IT Security – what is there to lose?

If I am a businesswoman, I will start my business with the end in mind. I will think of sales, profits I may earn,  and other positive things that may motivate me in starting up and maintaining my business. If I will invest, I will make sure that its all worth it.

Information technology plays a vital role in businesses and organizations. It gives businesses mobility and interconnectivity on a global basis. It helps in minimizing costs and maximizing all the resources. Aside from the fact that it helps in making the work of the employees easier, it also serves to be the major factor towards achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.

It is but proper to have a background check on the the company that would offer Security Risk Management, Identity and Access Management, Application Security, and Infrastructure Security but it will never be enough unless proven and tested by time. If one will make a decision to outsource information technology security, this carries with it the responsibility and accountability in dealing with the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing.

IT and Me

Standard

Almost all people in the world are connected through Information Technology which makes the managing and exchanging of information easier. Aside from this, IT is being used by and for business which enables the use and creation of data efficient.

I have considered Information Technology as one important thing in my life. Aside from making my family closer because of the help of the Internet, I also get the ease at work. My past job would require me, if not with IT, a lot of physical activities in terms of inventory. It has  helped the company save and earn profit.

In my current job, it makes dissemination of information faster and makes reporting real-time. However, I believe that IT has also its limits. Because of the recent aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda, many Local Government Units has limited lifelines that would include power. If without power supply, IT will not be in use. Thus it is always safe not to depend in Information Technology and be ready with back ups or alternative solutions in case IT may fail.

Yes, Information Technology has been very helpful to us but we must also be aware of its disadvantages especially now that children are more inclined to it. This may bring families together and closer but may also tore them apart.
