I installed ApacheJServ-1.0 successfully under FreeBSD 2.2.8.
I did not use DSO, but statically linked mod_jserv.o.

Got JSDK2.0 from java.sun.com and installed the contents of
the JSDK2.0 dir into /usr/local/jsdk.

Untarred the Apache_JServ-1.0.tar,gz file, did a

configure \
--with-apache-src=/usr/ports/www/apache13/work/apache_1.3.6 \
--with-jsdk=/usr/local/jsdk

The configure is written nicely such that it gives detailed instructions
how to get to the working Hello Jserv example.
