Memory Leaks caused by Blackdown JDK
The sudden surges in memory usage during servlet execustion are actually caused by quirks/bugs in Blackdown JDK 1.2.

To reduce the effect significantly (though not completely), edit your jserv.properties file and add the following lines:

wrapper.env=THREADS_FLAG=green
wrapper.env=JAVA_COMPILER=NONE
