Free software doesn't mean you can do anything without paying any money. In order to keep projects like this running, you need support and help from either other projects, individuals or companies willing to share and give away some of their resources (time, space, bandwidth, value) to pay off what they receive from the project. This symbiosis between individuals, organizations and volunteer projects is what keeps the open source effort going.
