The Night Life [Chapter ii: Phengophobia]

May 12, 2011

It’s been almost (but not quite!) a year since I posted the first chapter of The Night Life. It’s shamefully slow, but the fact that I’ve stuck it out is an accomplishment in itself. And since chapter ii is nearly twice as long as chapter i, I like to think that my slowness is forgivable. The longer the chapter, the longer it takes to write, right??

This chapter introduces the unifying plot of the story, but it’s really primarily slice-of-life in nature…if a story revolved around vampires can qualify as slice-of-life, that is. And okay, it’s kind of still the Tabatha/Daisuke show; I just hope that anyone reading appreciates the two of them as much as I do!

As a final note, all words that are grey in the text will eventually be Japanese. I think I know what a few of them are…but I really don’t feel like making an ass of myself by pretending to know Japanese. So everybody needs to use their ~imagination~ for now.

The next chapter to anticipate: (some clever social networking reference I haven’t thought of yet…yeah)!

Three Movie Quotes on Love that I Love

January 28, 2011

I’ve been failing horribly at posting on this blog. I told myself over winter break that I would definitely, definitely get the next chapter of The Night Life finished and posted–if not that, then certainly I could at least finish one of the short stories I have semi-written! …The result of those ambitions is a half-finished chapter 2 of The Night Life, a nearly-finished character backstory for Aiden from The In-Between, and another short story, barely started. And now it’s back to school and a focus on essays…sigh.

But I should at least post something here. So I thought I’d share a few quotes from movies that always strike me when I hear them–quotes on love that…are not really for the romantics, I suppose. But I’m a cynic, so I love ’em.

The Works-in-Progress of Summer

September 15, 2010

Ah, summer… a time to get nothing done! Funny how that works, isn’t it? The unemployed like me have all the time in the world to be productive, to do things that we enjoy like writing and drawing. And yet…nothing. My bad.

But it isn’t so much that I haven’t been doing anything; it’s that I haven’t been finishing anything. Don’t believe me? Well, here are some snippets of my unfinished summer works after the cut (and if you read through it, you’ll be rewarded!):

Paraskavedekatriaphobia – a Dengeki Daisy fanfiction

August 10, 2010

The scene that inspired this fanfiction...

I didn’t think that I would post any fanfictions on this blog, but I’m making an exception for this one. I mean, I only really post Tales Of fics on my Fanfiction account so it would be a little out-of-place for me to post a fic for a manga series (one with very few fics from what I’ve seen). But I want to share this, especially after hearing that it has helped me win the English fanfiction contest at Otakuthon. =D It was finished dangerously close to the deadline, caused me problems with the 2500-word limit and given “Friday the 13th” theme, and forced me to get into the minds of characters I had never before written about and adapt to the manga’s blend of comedy and seriousness. But I guess it all worked out in the end, didn’t it? That and I was probably like the only English entrant for the contest, bwahaha!

Summary: Paraskavedekatriaphobia – a mess of gibberish to most people. To Kurosaki, however, it was a genuine affliction, a dread of Friday the 13th. Not for bad luck, but for thoughts of that slasher flick franchise and the ways in which his overactive imagination decided its events could occur in his own life. Horror movies freaked him out. Only one person knew it…and she’d keep that to herself, right…? A Dengeki Daisy fanfiction that takes Kurosaki’s fear of horror films to a whole new level.

The Night Life [Chapter i – Vegetarian Vampire]

June 3, 2010

Finally, I’ve finished the first chapter of my vampire story! It was just a little section left to write, and yet it took me so long. Oh, and between finishing this chapter and uploading it, I’ve actually come up with a title: The Night Life. I was trying to find some way to combine vampire and urban life within the title, and this just seemed perfect; it’s a phrase associated with going out and enjoying bars and clubs, but night is also the only time when vampires would be able to experience life.

Sneak Peek: Les Vampires de Montréal

April 26, 2010

I draw my own fanart! Wait...that's sad, isn't it?

These days vampires are all the rage, and I’m not gonna lie – I’m all about that bandwagon. Reading it, watching it, and as a result of my In-Between writer’s block, writing it! It actually started as just a short story idea in my head, poking fun of the recent vampire obsession by showing a girl willingly giving herself to a boy dressed up as a vampire at a costume party…who ends up being an actual vampire who kills her. Just a play on all of those girls swooning, “Oh, if only vampires were real!” Yeah. If vampires were real, we’d all be screwed. That would be the message.

But I didn’t want to leave it at that. There were so many other things to poke fun at! Thus I established the idea of a series of vingettes, each focusing on a given vampire and his or her adjustments to the modern world (specifically, in Montréal). It’s a mélange of seriousness and satire as I introduce a small cast of characters who embody or obsess over certain vampiric attributes from pop culture.

Kitten Cuteness Overload!!

April 25, 2010

Okay, so my plan was to make this a place primarily for writing and artwork…but who can resist photos of a litter of SIX KITTENS?? D’awwww~ For the past week my family has been fostering a mother cat and her six kittens, who were found outside in my town. We took them in temporarily until the shelter where we volunteer could arrange another foster home. They’ve gone to their new home today and I already miss them and their adorable faces! So, in their absence, I think it’s fair to accommodate by looking at pictures and sharing them with the interwebs.

Designing The In-Between Characters

April 13, 2010

When I hit a major writer’s block, that doesn’t mean that I stop thinking about my characters. It’s horribly, horribly frustrating to think so often on who I want these characters to be, what I want them to do, and yet be unable to write it. To fill the void, I end up doodling them an awful lot! Because I’ve had the idea of The In-Between in my head for so long, the cast’s main trio has seen major transformation in their appearances. I’ve put together a bunch of sketches that I’ve done through the years to show how my visions of Grace, Quinn, and Aiden have altered. I think it’s pretty neat to see!

(Make sure to click on the pictures to read my oh-so riveting commentary!)

The In-Between [Prologue, Chapters 1-2]

April 12, 2010

It is only fair that my first non-intro post be for The In-Between, as it is what I hope will be my first full-length novel. I have proven to be a ridiiiiculously slow writer, though, and thus only have a prologue and two chapters complete. Despite this, I want to share what I have written so far in hopes of getting feedback and feeling more driven to move onward. A large chunk of the third chapter has been written, although I’m thinking that I need to switch up the timeline and speed things up. Once I get to a certain point in the story, I know hope that my will to write will increase.

SummaryThe In-Between could, I suppose, be classified as a sci-fi story because the setting shows a consequence of scientific testing going too far to the point where a second human-like species is created by combining animal traits with humans, called ‘demons’ by regular people who are frightened by their existence. The disagreement in ideals between scientific minds and the general population leads to the world being split into two societies, one for humans and one for the so-called demons. The story takes place in the human side as the protagonist, Grace Hale, comes to acknowledge the people stuck in the middle of this whole conflict—the ‘inhumans’—who are not demon enough to be allowed in their society and yet are not entirely human either.

The illustration at the top is connected to chapter two. I think I’ll do simple drawings like that for future chapters, too – the post would feel a little barren without any images, right?

Let’s try this blogging thing…

April 10, 2010

I always, always, always tell myself that I need to write more: “I vow to write more this year!”, “I’ll write every night before I go to sleep,” “I’ll make an LJ account for my writing so I’ll do it more.” Lies, lies, lies!

And maybe this blog will be a lie too – but I want to try it, and I want to make it my own. A scrapbook of sorts. Maybe I won’t always be writing, so then I can post some sketches I’ve drawn or pictures I’ve taken. Works-in-progress or random rants unrelated to artsy junk, whatever I so please. Part of what has halted me creatively in the past is limiting myself to just one realm. Not to sound like a rebellious teen or anything, but labels are overrated. While my ultimate goal might be to get back into the habit of writing, that won’t stop me from slipping other media in here too.
