Election Platform and Advocacy Programs

If elected as President of the Student Council, my thrusts are as follows:
I. Platform

Continuity.

Continuity is important for the integrity and direction of any organization. This year, the student council
implemented projects under the tagline BE MORE, BE ASMPH. As President, I intend to continue this
theme, integrating all projects of the SC and the school’s student organizations under it. By continuing to
create projects under a single theme, we come closer to unifying our goals as a student body despite the
diverse population of the school.
However, continuity is not just about making sure past successes are maintained. It is also about
progress and innovation. This coming school year, I intend to further improve the functions of the
student council and its constituents, perfect what we can, so we can move forward to looking for new
opportunities to make a better ASMPH for the students and community.

Change.

As ASMPH is a young school, it undergoes a series of changes every year. Constant protocols have yet
to be established for some matters. The council next year will focus on establishing standard procedures
to ease the changing environment of the school into stability.
Next school year, we will be experiencing an especially challenging change: the ACADEMIC CALENDAR
SHIFT. As a medical school, this will affect all year levels, and I assure that the Student Council will do it’s
best to make the experience as smooth as possible for the students. We can do this through proper
information dissemination, early planning and coordination with the needed administrative bodies.

Cooperation.

No council can work well without the cooperation of the student body. Next year, as President, it is
important for me that the council be connected and visible to the students. The presence of the council
and it’s function of service for the students must be made clear through projects, open forums and/or
evaluations. This is also one way of empowering the students and giving them a heightened presence
and voice in the school.

Community.

Ateneo prides itself in its sense community, and the student council should be a promoting body of this.
As the direct liason between the administration and the students, the council must hold activities that
should always have the best interest of the entire school in mind.

Core.

What does it mean to be an Atenean doctor? What does it mean to BE MORE, BE ASMPH? As the
leaders of the ASMPH, I believe that I as President and my fellow leaders in the council should be
examples of this. We should strive to be leaders who direct their fellow students into finding their core as
medical students, as future doctors. We should embody what it means to be a student of Ateneo and
a doctor of the future.

II. Effective leadership

A. Management
As the President of the school, I will make sure to be involved in all aspects of the organization as much
as possible. I will check projects, monitor activities, manage meetings and perform any other needed
duties that will enable me to become properly informed about the school’s status well-being. I will also
encourage my council to do the same, especially for their respective fields of work.
Sound management still remains as an essential key for an orderly and effective academic year. If elected
as President, I will make sure to perform my duties and responsibilities as stated in the ASMPH Student
Council’s Constitutions and Bylaws. I will also check projects, monitor activities, manage meetings and
perform any other needed duties that are needed of me. I will also serve
Practicing proper management is useful in establishing an effective administrative framework. I can help
maximize the skills of the batch officers through:

1. Promoting a dynamic mindset.
2. Encouraging efficiency and effectiveness.
3. Proper allocation of resources.
4. Proper time management.
5. Effective communication.
6. Providing helpful materials.
7. Consulting the students/encouraging evaluations.

B. Working as a team
I believe that the council will be most effective if working as a team, in coordination with the administration
and the greater student body. Teamwork must be constant and unbiased, and professionalism must be
remembered. Thus, as President, I would like to build teamwork amongst my council via workshops and
other activities such as a retreat, for instance.

I. Promote communication and collaborative efforts among organizations
In order to improve the efficiency and impact of organizational efforts, and in line with the spirit of
fostering a stronger community within the ASMPH, I intend to improve communication and establish
camaraderie among various organization leaders. In doing so, deeper relationships and partnerships
can be formed to favor collaborative efforts. This goal can be achieved by:

• Hosting organizational development workshops, teambuilding sessions, and planning seminars for
the executive board members of various organizations in partnership with the AOB and OSA
• Consistently following up with the organizations to assess its needs and its possible contributions
to other organizations throughout the entire school year

II. Align current internals department projects with the ASMPH vision and streamline its
implementation
Rather than implementing new projects to the growing number of projects scheduled throughout the
year, I intend to streamline the implementation of current projects to ensure its success and impact in
line with the school’s vision by:

• Establishing a project head mentoring system to aid incoming project teams in the execution of the
various projects, from the initial planning phase to the evaluation phase
• Establishing a standardized project evaluation, feedback, and documentation system to effectively
communicate points of improvement for succeeding project teams

III. Motivate the student body to participate and provide appropriate avenues for their
To increase the participation and involvement of the student body, appropriate avenues must be
provided to highlight each person’s unique skills and talents while simultaneously inspiring and
motivating these persons to take the initiative to participate. This goal can be achieved by:

• Utilizing a project head and project team application process while simultaneously promoting and
encouraging participation in these activities throughout the school year
• Lobbying for a protected time for student assemblies and similar activities
• Hosting events that highlight unique skills and talents of the student body (ie. TEDxASMPH)
• Assuring the student body is well-informed through the release of council meeting minutes

STRENGTHENING LINKAGES WITH OTHER MEDICAL SCHOOLS

One of the main strategic thrusts for the coming school year is to make the ASMPH-SC, and the school in general, more open in terms of looking for opportunities for collaboration with other medical institutions. This will be done both on a local and global level, with the main goal of engaging in “knowledge transfer” — that is, generating ideas on how to make changes for the improvement of both academic and non-academic aspects of the ASMPH.

Furthermore, this aims to maximize the move of the school to sync with the calendar of most of the other post-graduate schools in the world, giving the students more opportunities for exchange and interaction with their counterparts in other medical schools. By forming alliances or finding student networks where the ASMPH can be a part of, these avenues can eventually be opened for our students, giving them more options to hone their skills either in medicine, MBA or Public Health

INTEGRATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES

The creation of the Public Health Council will monitor ongoing Public Health initiatives of the different organizations of ASMPH, ensuring that both resources and impact is maximized, especially for the partner communities that the said organizations are working with. Furthermore, this gives the ASMPH-SC the opportunity to explore existing partnerships of the school with government and non-government organizations and look at possible projects for students to direct efforts in helping these communities

With the centralization of the Disaster Management Council, the Public Health Council can now focus on strengthening communication lines between partner communities and ensuring that their needs are met in times of calamity.

Generation of funds will also be looked into, through the presentation of worthy initiatives and Public Health studies to funding organizations, with the help of a pool of faculty advisers and ASMPH alumni working in the said field.

ORGANIZED AND EXCELLENT REPRESENTATION

The best that the ASMPH has to offer will always be given the chance to represent the school, making sure that the school will have teams that are adequately selected and trained in various contests and competitions organized by organizations where the school is a member of.

Various studies done by students will also be compiled into a publication, and the ASMPH-SC will find avenues for excellent studies to be presented in various international conferences for the particular topic of interest.

Another key aspect that will be the preparation for the ASMPH’s hosting of the 50th Association of Philippine Medical College National Convention in January 2017. This will be the first time that the school will host the said event, and it will be a key event wherein the school will be able to synergize its public health agenda as the APMC moves beyond its golden anniversary.

Systems and Structure

  • Together with the Legislative Officer and next set of batch executive board members, some parts of the batch structure and code of internal procedures will be revised in order to further improve services.
    • Scheduler – Can help assist the EO/LO in reminding the batch of upcoming requirements and promotion of events, not just arrange the actual class schedule for the week.
    • Trans Police – Stricter implementation of fines and deadlines.
    • External Projects Coordinator – Needs to be reevaluated; may be in-charge of handling the visits to the batch’s adopted community if the proposal is approved by the whole batch and the school.
    • Beadle and Deputy Beadle – Roles will be delineated more clearly so as to decrease workload of the Beadles. Beadle may be assigned solely to represent transcription groups in academic requirements/concerns, whereas Deputy Beadles may be in-charge of representing the group in extracurricular concerns such as batch projects.
    • Pre-trans – Will not be required to be done in expense of the group assigned so as to encourage individual effort in studying during busy days (quiz/exam day – reinforced by the fact that the whole batch has access to the upper batch’s transcriptions.
  • A readily available copy of the batch code of internal procedures will be placed in the lecture hall for transparency, to encourage familiarization, and to prevent confusion in roles and responsibilities.
  • Discuss the possibility of having a separate Facebook page for the batch’s academic and non-academic concerns.
  • Importance of everyone’s participation and role in the system and structure will be emphasized. The batch Executive Board is established only to assist the batch in its everyday function and making things easier, but the more vital factors are the batch’s initiative and discipline.

Involvement within the ASMPH

  • Better visibility of the Student Council and organizations within the batch through better promotion of events. This is will be done by having better coordination and communication with the persons-in-charge to make sure promotion is done earlier and with accurate information.
  • Continuation of the batch General Assemblies and Feedback and Grievance Board (together with the LO) to voice out concerns for the school.
  • Aside from the emphasis on everyone’s participation, the option of assigning everyone to committees will be discussed with the batch to further encourage participation in events and activities, not only the same, active people. This is also to alleviate the burden of planning and preparing for events given the very heavy academic load of YL6. Possible committees to be established are the following:
    • Christmas Party
    • Year Ender Party
    • Batch Sports Fest
    • Batch Outing
    • Batch Fundraising Activities

Involvement outside the ASMPH

  • Exploring the possibility of having a batch adopted community for the next 4 years (and beyond).
    • Avenue for the batch to learn more about actual communities on a more permanent scale and to apply lessons in medicine, MBA, and public health.
    • Regular visits (at least 5 visits throughout the year) for medical checkups, disaster relief, and other special occasions (like Christmas).
    • In coordination with the school, an organization, and/or the SC for an already existing community partnership or an entirely new one.
    • Preparations and arrangements can be done during the long summer break (April-July 2015.
  • Having an active stand on issues within the school and in the greater society.
    • Can begin with small steps, such as release of a batch statement through social media regarding a specific health issues if majority of the batch agrees in a certain stance.
    • Encourages critical thinking and discussion within the batch. Can also improve the visibility of our young school in our community.
    • Initiated by the batch, and hopefully can be adopted by the SC and the whole school.

Election Platform and Advocacy Programs

Having served as an assistant to the YL7 LO Carlito Reyes, I can say that this at the very least an interesting time for the ASMPH Legislative Council. Since its conception it has grown in its capabilites, independence and identity, and much more so in the last year, particularly with the drafting of the new Constitution and Student Bill of Rights. Hopefully, its passing will represent a palpable sign of the growing nature of the school as well, and reflect its concern with the student body. It comes as no surprise then that as the legislative office continues to develop, there is a growing continual need to supply it with people who can actively represent their batches with a sense of passion and commitment, unafraid to forward concerns and complaints of the student body, yet equipped with the legislative skills to convert them into tangible plans, all in the context of an overall improvement in systems and policies. I believe I can be that person for Batch 2017, and that I can help continue the progress the legislative office has made and hopefully create my own strides along the way.

As legislative officer, I can promise:
– To represent the YL8 community in the Student Council;
– To forward or address the concerns and complaints of my fellow students, through direct and personal interaction;
– To review, promulgate and revise the ASMPH Legislative Documents, as based on the short term and long term needs and concerns of the student body;
– To guide and advise my fellow Legislative Officers regarding the expectations for the school year and the potential reaction of the student body regarding changes in school policies;
– To participate in policy-making endeavors that not only serves to help the student body, but seeks to overall improve the relationship of the student body with the administration, faculty and staff;
– To participate in the yearly submission of the Legislative Semestral Report

Election Platform and Advocacy Programs

Unlike the past 3 years of our batch’s life in ASMPH, this coming school year will be our first one outside of the classroom. It will be new. It will be scary. It will show us how the rest of our lives will be. I plan on being 2017’s mommy and friend, helping everyone with this upcoming transition into the hospital-life. It may not be easy but with good communication and transparency, batch 2017 will rock this year!

Platform 1: Keeping Everyone Connected

Advocacy: Effective communication of school-related, student-related, and medical profession-related issues to both the YL8 coordinators and the batch
Method:
– Creation of a batch committee made up of (at least) the clerkship group leaders, whose main job will be to disseminate information, brainstorm and make decisions regarding any pertinent issues that arise
– Maintain open lines of communication between myself and both the YLC (Dr. Obet Tanchanco) and AYLC (Dr. Ces Dollaga) by always being available through call/text/email.

Platform 2: Open Communication

Advocacy: Keeping everyone in-the-know especially since we’ll be in different hospitals and communities all over Metro Manila
Method:
– Social Networks: The batch Facebook group as well as the Google online calendar will contain up-to-date schedules, deadlines, and reminders of all things clerk-related, such as enrollment dates, submission dates, birthdays, holidays, LEC group projects, DMC reminders, etc.
– Personal Communication: Information dissemination through text and/or email using a system similar to DMC’s student check

Platform 3: Integrated Learning

Advocacy: For YL8, we as clerks are expected to integrate everything we have learned inside the classroom and apply it into practice.
Method:
– Maintain online cloud storage of old transcriptions, textbooks and reference materials for everyone’s ease-of-access
– Academic assistance for exit exams and/or removals

Platform 4: Efficient Problem Solving/Troubleshooting

Advocacy: Problems, big or small, are sure to come up next year. Accurate feedback and timely action are important for efficient resolution.
Method:
– By working closely with the LO, together we will hear out student concerns and resolve them as efficiently as possible while considering the school’s constitution and by-laws, as well as the student Magna Carta.
– Deliberation with clerkship group leaders as to appropriate actions depending on the factors surrounding the issue such as gravity, circumstance, stakeholders, etc.
– Clerks’ Champion: Ipaglalaban ko ang mahalaga sa inyo within reason

Platform 5: Presence

Advocacy: Although we’re in different venues at once, distance will not hinder my ability to be an informed and available EO.
Method:
– Scheduled bi-monthly and as needed catch-up sessions (whether online, through call/text, or in-person) with clerkship group representatives regarding the group, rotation, etc.
– Availability through call/text/fb message/viber if you want/need someone to talk/rant/ask about clerkship/MBA woes

Platform 6: We’re All In This Together/Batch Togetherness

Advocacy: We might not see each other every day anymore, but that doesn’t mean we should allow ourselves to drift apart. #heartstrong
Method:
– If our schedules allow it, get-togethers big or small, from kahit coffee o ice cream lang together pre-duty/from-duty, to actual Christmas, Valentine, White Day, random holiday celebrations, to toasting one more day of clerkship done, and one more day closer to becoming a doctor.

Love never says I have done enough. – St. Marie Eugenie
