WWII Finns (Commission)
I painted up a full army of these a while back and the client had a few additions. Here they are. Everything is hand painted, including the tank markings.
In other news, I have come to the end of about 4 months of commissions and I am ready for a break! I’ve got some Napoleonic figures on order from Maelstrom and will most likely place orders with Front Rank and Perry in the next few days. I can see the light at the end of my 28mm project (Phase I). Essentially I will be able to field two Lasalle armies with two support choices each. My buddy Chris and I prefer to play at the two support level for the same reason we like FOW at 2000pts. You get to take all the toys!
P.S. 60 Brunswick infantry should be making an appearance soon. They are painted, but you don’t need to see the pictures of them on Popsicle sticks. Hopefully I can convince the new owner to snap some pics once they are based.
KGL Hussars
Client wanted to seal / base these. I enjoyed painting these quite a bit. I’m torn now on whether to paint two large units of Heavy Dragoons or three small units of Light Dragoons and a unit of KGL Hussars as a support choice for my Lasalle Brits. I’m not sure who I’m kidding….I’ll probably end up giving both a go.
The plan this summer is to get a photo setup going. It just isn’t feasible in an apartment, but summer in the house means I’ll have a bit of space.
On a completely different note I really want to mention the AMAZING service I have gotten from Maelstrom Games. These guys are based in the U.K., offer free world wide shipping, and have some amazing prices. They also offer a cash back deal which is a nice touch…the 5GBP cash back freebie a few months back was beyond sweet.

School and commissions have been keeping me really busy. I’ve painted 24 French Dragoons, a FOW Soviet Army, a FOW Finnish Army (pics soon hopefully), and 24 British Heavy Dragoons. Here is a shot of the British Dragoons. The client wants to do the basing,
Two British Line Units
Here are a few quick snapshots of some newly sealed British Line units. I learned a valuable lesson with these….don’t paint faces after having hurt your hand shoveling snow…
I was torn between repriming or just pushing ahead so I could work on the next unit. Needless to say I’m not satisfied with the quality, but I wanted to offer up at least one update in the last 20+ days. On to the pics.
Two units of line. One with green facings and one with yellow facings. These are the first 1/2 of the British Guard list. I’m looking forward to a game on Tuesday where these guys may or may not see action with in my friend Chris’s force. I’m hoping to be the attacker in that one using French guard!
45th foot sans flags and basing
83rd foot sans flags and basing
The intention is to base this list along the lines of the first division at Fuentes de Onoro. 72 tartans are in progress and 2 more boxes of Perry French Dragoons are in the mail to me for a support choice. I’m shooting for the end of may to be able to run a core and 2 cav. support choices. What I need to find are a few of those wargamers that over indulged in Perry plastics and are looking to trade some of them away on the cheap…
Vistula Lancers (WIP)
Before I can complete my proposed FOW style pdf featuring a new reserve choice for the French Penninsular army I need to get some figures painted. These guys need to do a bit of play testing and I need to get some good pictures of them for the pdf. Below is a large unit (12 figures on 6 bases) that still need lances, pennons, and basing. I am going to wait to order / add the pennons until I place a large GMB order.
I’m not sure if I would order these Front Rank figures again. The figures are beautiful and a joy to paint, but they are huge. It looks like the lancers are riding ponies.
Can anyone recommend an inexpensive light box? Preferably something I can fold flat. I am not satisfied with the photo quality, and if you, the reader, take the time to look at the pictures, I need to provide the best “product” possible. Ideas?
Anyway here are the pics.
Officer and standard bearer are wearing the stylish red sash. I have no idea if they really did, and am not too fussed about it. I just like the combination of white, blue, yellow, and red.
The whole unit, sans lances, waiting to break a few squares.
In completely different news, Rattrap Games has purchased Contemptible Little Armies, the rules by Chris Peers, and I hope to have the opportunity to play a few 500pt. back of beyond games with Rich (of Rattrap fame). Anyway I was digging through my painted figures and found these guys. Hope you old grognards don’t mind the short diversion.
Bengali Lancers with Bamboo Lances (figures by Brigade Games)
Taken the plunge. . . & the French are done. . .
French core is all painted and based. (Pics soon, it’s raining here so the light is worse than usual.) That is 4 conscript units, 3 veteran units, 1 dragoon unit, 1 battery, 10 SK figures, and 3 commanders. These guys can attack or defend. Flags are still a ways off since I want to order French and British flags from GMB all at once and the price adds up quickly. (Please don’t let that discourage anyone though. They are definitely worth saving for!).
I picked up a box of Victrix highlanders this weekend and will start painting tartans for a British guard list. I can do 2 large units of guard with a box of victrix centre company highlanders and 2 blisters of perry flank company highlanders. 70 figures for approximately $50 is really cheap. I’m definitely looking forward to the victrix British artillery arriving.
GMB Flags – Finally a Website
Title says it all. GMB finally has a website. . . with pictures! Here is a link.
http://www.salespartners.co.uk/
EDIT: I was just informed (Thanks DJoker!) that the site is still a work in progress as Graham (the master artist, if you will, behind GMB) continues to work on his website. In the meantime feel free to email him at [email protected]
Many people might wonder why I am so excited when I, living in the US, could just order the flags from Triangle Miniatures. Unfortunately, the one order I placed with Triangle Miniatures turned into a three month debockle, that ended with a call to my credit card company. Since then I have ordered from the Perrys, Front Rank, and now GMB without any issue. I would recommend to anyone that they forgo ordering from Triangle and order direct. You will be much happier with the service!

A quick photo lifted from DJoker’s blog. Checkout his blog if you haven’t already seen it. Here is a link to his review of these terrific flags.
Been a while
First let me apologize for the long hiatus from posting. To be honest, I have enrolled in a graduate program and time, not to paint, but to photograph painted miniatures half decently, is at a real premium. I also don’t have a real photo setup, so often find the pictures lacking. Even so I wanted to get these up in the hope of getting some other people excited about finishing their Lasalle armies.
Anyway, here is a core French force with with additional 2 attacking units (1 Vet. & 1 Conscript) as well as the additional commander attacking offers. The attacking units still need to get based, the paint is probably still drying as I type. The SK bases and officers need a bit of paint as well. Work was nice enough to call a snow day tomorrow and I hope to have the figures painted tomorrow.

Dragoons
Casualty Figures
I saw on TMP that the Perry Bros are releasing Hussars and Dragoons. Here is the plan for beefing out this army: a reserve battalion of plastic dragoons and a reserve battalion that consists of 1 large unit of Vistula Lancers (horses are already painted and lancers are primed!) and 1 Large Unit of plastic Hussars. I know that this isn’t in the Lasalle rulebook, but I’ll work on mocking up a high quality pdf. Think of the Flames of War online websites, except mine won’t be legal for anything….
And a teaser. I finished the first rank of a Spanish core. These guys are defenders, through and through, so I am not even planning on painting the attacking portion. These guys were painted in 4 days, so don’t look too close. 🙂
M&R / Spanish Update
I was able to play a quite enjoyable game of M&R this weekend. I really do need to get some pictures of my Spanish force up onto the blog. Maybe I’ll find the time over the holiday weekend to do a bit of photography…
The game involved an Average Spanish General against a Good Turkish General. Unfortunately the Spanish were still outnumbered!! The board we played on was amazingly sparse, with with a small trickle of a stream on the Spanish left. With so much open ground and so many Turkish light troops the Spanish were forced to deploy most of their army behind the river. This led to a less than thrilling engagement as the Spanish bunkered and tried not to be flanked by all of the light cavalry (calvary for Barry). I did stick a large unit of Spanish horse outside of the bunker so that I would have something to do. Naturally this was a mistake as they failed to activate twice in a row AND I could not roll better than a 2 on all combat rolls. Highlights included the amazing Spanish musketry which, contrary to the cavalry’s performance, decimated a number of Janissary and Turkish Levy units. Had we had a bit more terrain on the board the Spanish could have had a much better showing. Being forced to bunker was a real drag, but my 5 SP infantry can not fight of enemy cav when they are flanked for a -3 modifier for all combats.
Pics are missing because the camera was left at home.
Lasalle Spanish
The Spanish core are all primed and ready to go. Having received my copy of Lasalle I noticed that the number of Militia necessary has dropped from 3 to 2. No problem as I’ll be able to pack the bases a bit denser than I originally planned. As I mentioned in an earlier post I am only going to paint the front rank of each unit. Then over the course of a few months I can add in the second rank. Like ever other gamer, I just love to push lead around on the table. I am torn between painting these unit by unit, just banging out the entire army in one go, or painting all of the similar things (faces, muskets, cartridge pouches, hats, boot, etc.) of ever unit and the going back in to finish the uniforms. Opinions?
1-Month and Finally an Update
It has been a pretty busy month. I took on a HUGE commission and was shackled to the painting desk trying to get it finished in under 30 days. Pics are below, so you can decide for yourself if you like them. Some of the local guys have started playing a game called Malifaux and I decided that I needed a break between tartans and the start of my Lasalle Spanish army. Anyway here are the pics:
Here are a few of the pics of some Malifaux miniatures. This is the first gallery I have ever inserted. Hopefully it works!
I’m just about finished with 2 boxes of FOW Russian infantry (commission work). Pics to be posted within a week. I should also have some images of a Might & Reason extravaganza scheduled for Saturday. I’m also excited to have just received all of the Spanish “Militia” packs from the Perry brothers. I’ll be priming those Thursday (weather permitting).
Enjoy. (and comment?)
