Year of the Rat

2008 is the year of the Rat so I thought I'd take a moment to talk about one of the most amazing rats I've ever known, Miss Bernadette. But rather than explaining it all anew, I'm just going to grab segments of my diary and emails to friends to illustrate Bernadette's entire saga.

2/25/06

As you all know, my rat Ichi died last month. Tony and I haven't gotten another one yet- I still miss him so much. He was such a charmer..... one of the cutest, sweetest rats I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Anyway, today, dh and I got home around 6:00 to take care of Disco dog. After she had dinner, I half-heartedly suggested we run to a local art supply store for some art supplies. DH and I hemmed and hawed a little- both of us being hungry and tired. But we decided to head out right away as the store closed at 7 and it was about 6:30 by the time we got motivated.

We arrived at the art store only to find out that they had closed at 6. So it was a pointless journey after all... or so we thought.

We started back home, hemming and hawing some more about what to eat for dinner and if we should bother stopping at Safeway tonight or not....

We got off the W. Seattle bridge and started home... only to find unbelievably bad traffic blocking our usual path. So we took a back route, one we don't often take. By this time, it was pretty dark outside.

Suddenly, Tony saw something white in his headlights.... "is that a possum?" he asked... we strained to look. It was a white rat and it had stopped right in front of our car!!

And it was walking oddly- I thought maybe it was pregnant. I saw a car coming from the opposite direction so I immediately leapt out of the car and ran out into the road, stopping traffic by flailing my hands like a madwoman.

The little rat hopped to the side of the road and I followed. I kneeled down and called it to me and did my usual "finger rustling" noise that rats are drawn to. It came right up to me immediately! I knew it had to have been someone’s pet at some point because it was so friendly. And of course the coloring gave it away- normally, wild rats are not white. This one was white with a black circle of fur around one eye and a black collar of fur around the neck. SOOO cute!!!

Sadly, I could see that it had 2 unbelievably large tumors, which presumably was why it had been walking so oddly. I picked it up- it squawked a little but let me do it. Once back at the car, I was able to more easily examine the rattie and determined it was a female…. And a very thin female at that. She immediately crawled to my shoulders and stayed there (common place for rat owners to "carry" their rats).

When we got home, I was able to investigate further....her tumors were so large that they had been dragging on the ground and were scabbed up from the dragging! It was horrible. I imagine that someone had decided they couldn't take care of a rat with giant tumors so they dumped her outside to fend for herself or die. I can't think of any other explanation for why she was wandering around in the cold… and the scabs on her did not come from just one day. (I am amazed she survived at all- she is not that agile or mobile w/ these giant tumors hampering her movements- a cat could surely have gotten her). I confess that I cried.

I cleaned her up a little and she nestled into my shirt and began to clean herself. (Rats are meticulously clean). We made up a ratty condo for her (of course we had kept all the rat items we had from when Ichi was alive). I gave her some cereal and a small strawberry dipped in peanut butter… (hey, she needs some fattening up!). She ate voraciously and drank like crazy!!

We plan on taking her to the vet tomorrow and hoping against hope that they can surgically remove the tumors and that she'll be OK afterwards.

This is where I need the MOJO. Please, if you can spare some mojo, send some this way for her… she is a sweet sweet rat and needs major mojo if she is to survive. As Tony and I sat there marveling at how wonderful she was it suddenly hit us both how utterly bizarre and perhaps miraculous this whole night had been. It was like we were meant to find her… I mean, who else can you think of that would stop and rescue a rat from the side of the road? And moreover, have all the necessary equipment on hand for rats, be old pros at handling rats, and having just lost a rat, were in emotional need of one??!

I decided to name her Bernadette- after "The Song of Bernadette"- a movie I loved as a kid. I'm not religious at all, but that movie made a big impression on me and I thought it just fit our little surprise visitor!

I called my sister to tell her the story and when I told her I was naming her Bernadette, my sister said "OMG! I just got done talking to an old old friend of mine, and he brought up an ex-girlfriend of his that we haven't talked about in many many years…. Her name is Bernadette!". It was so funny!! How odd is that?

And then, of course, I thought of Bernie Berlin… I think she'll be flattered that I have a rat named Bernadette.

Anyway, I need major mojo because these tumors are so large, and she is so thin, ...she can't even sleep properly- she has to sit up propped on these tumors and keeps being jostled awake as her head and arms "roll off" the damn things. The tumors are, combined, the size of her entire body. Its so unbelievably sad.

So please send lots of mojo for Bernadette. I want her to live so badly. I have been trying these past few hours to not get too attached to her- to be realistic and plan for the worst. But of course the minute I had her in my arms out there on the road I fell in love. I'm pathetic that way... What an amazing night! Now I just hope I can get some sleep, dreaming good thoughts of her speedy recovery....

2/26/06

Well, the news is good! The vet said she was woefully thin, but that her lungs sounded good (rats are especially prone to a form of pneumonia). She said she felt that Bernadette had a fair chance to survive surgery (!), but that we needed to try to fatten her up a bit first to give her a better chance. The vet also said, and she was only half-joking at the time, that Bernadette would probably need a little "cosmetic surgery" to deal w/ all the excess skin once the giant tumors were removed! LOL!

Now for the bad news…. The vet said that it would cost about $492!!!!!!!!!!!! My jaw hit the floor. Not because Bernadette isn't worth it… but because Tony and I just had to spend nearly $1000 on car repairs (busted water pump and burnt out alternator among other things) and then on the way home we were shocked to find that our car overheated!! OMG- what next?!?! I guess trouble does travel in threes (or more)! Egads. When we finally got home, I just wanted to curl up in bed and feel sorry for myself.

But I have never been able say to myself that its just not financially feasible to do something for a four-legged friend, so after the requisite self-pity fest, I went into brainstorm mode... this was the perfect excuse to get off my rear and sell some extra art supplies and such on ebay!!

So I'll be working on that over the next week or so I think! Perfect excuse for some spring cleaning!!! :)
I'm also going to explore other veterinary options to make sure I get a vet with enough ratty experience to really help Bernadette.

One thing is clear- Bernadette is obviously meant to be in my house and heart! :) I'm a sucker for the underdog! :)

Speaking of which, Lovely Bernadette is trying to sleep a little right now (she's had a tough day of car rides and vet exams and such). I gave her lots of fattening foods tonight (!) and she ate like a little piggy!!!! I'm feeling like a giddy little kid with a new pet- I am trying really hard to let her sleep even tho' what I really want to do is take her out and give her lots of scratches behind the ear and little ratty kisses! LOL!

2/28/06

Well, Bernadette is still eating like a piggy. In my experience, however, the tumors often absorb most of the nutrients so I am not sure how chubby we will be able to get her before the surgery.

I talked to another vet today and a vet tech, and emailed them pics of Bernadette. The vet said that she also thinks the chance of survival is small... partially because of the risk of bleeding during the surgery (all the vessels connected to the tumors) and because Bernie's body may go into shock w/ that much of her body mass removed...The vet tech agreed. :(

We are bringing her in to see the 2nd vet so he can see her in person. I'm looking for someone who is willing to do the surgery but that person has to be someone I have faith in. I'm not going to trust dear Bernadette to just anyone!!

The 2nd vet (the one who said I should put her down) is actually someone I have faith in as a surgeon- he's done surgery on Disco (my dog) before. So I'm bringing her in to see him tomorrow in person. We'll see what he says when he gets his hands on her. Wish us luck!! :)

3/1/06

The vet looked at her today and said he thought the tumors should be more easily removable than he had thought based on the photos. (Yippee). But that he still feels there is a good chance she won't make it. And that she will need a lot of "plastic surgery" once the lumps are out because they extend even down some of her legs, etc. So now the question is if he can do it (he only works at the clinic once a week). He said he may be able to give me a better price on the surgery (wow!)... but I'll know more next week.

The waiting is killing me because I want those things out now! But she needs time to fatten up and get healthier to give her a better chance at survival. None of the vets want to do the surgery yet. So I have to be patient.... and give her some more fattening treats! I'm optimistic today. :)

OK, so here's a cute story: Bernadette must be getting so spoiled by what we give her that she's getting picky! (A good sign!). She dumped her bowl today of dog and rat food (fatty food for her to chew) and covered the food with the bowl and bedding as if to say "yeah, right- where are the strawberries dipped in pb?"

Now, having had rats for years I can say honestly that rats do do this sometimes... their favorite foods are either devoured or taken to their "nest box". If they don't like the food, they'll dump and cover it or just cover it in the bowl. Is that funny or what? :) Spoiled rat!

3/5/06

OK, so Tony and I are still dutifully trying to fatten her up (to little avail). Meanwhile I have been talking to more vets. The latest word is promising. The vet that I mentioned that I have a lot of confidence in as a surgeon said he would be willing to try to talk his boss (clinic owner) into allowing this surgery as a "teaching surgery" for a 4 year vet student (who happens to be an acquaintance!). So that means the surgery will be less than the original estimate of $500!!!!!

How much less exactly, I don't know yet. But the most important thing is I have a lot of faith in this vet as a surgeon (having entrusted Disco to him this last time she had all those lumps removed). So, it'll be a vet I know AND trust AND it may be cheaper than $500!!

The downside is- Bernie didn't look all that well to me tonight and I don't know why. I have to bring a fecal sample in from her tomorrow so they can look for parasites (since she was living outside for awhile).

But I'm hoping I'm just being uber paranoid mama. She did eat her baby carrot dinner tonight semi-enthusiastically, so..... Disco, who is a wee bit jealous of the new "baby", was sitting in front of the cage eyeing the baby carrot. (Disco is addicted to them). Of course we had give her one first, but I think just because we had the temerity to give one to the "new kid" we are on her "#*$( list" for awhile. LOL! That damn dog! She is so spoiled its pathetic. Tony's dad calls her "ruined". :)

3/11/06

Bernadette had her surgery today!!! It took 2 hours!!! A lot of work. The vet student was absolutely superb... he did a wonderful job. And the vet was there guiding him and was just terrific as well. The whole staff at that clinic were just incredibly generous and kind and thoughtful- Tony and I were so impressed! Bernadette is tired. The lumps were humongous- they weighed 100 grams of her 396 gram weight. They were the size of her body! The talk at the clinic was "Hey, we removed a rat from some tumors today" instead of "hey we removed some tumors from a rat today". LOL.

One of them was very close to some nerves so there is some concern that she will lose some mobility in one leg. But so far, she seems fine in terms of movement. Also, there was some major blood flow going to the tumors so they had to work carefully. They ended up not doing too much of a "nip and tuck" of the skin because they were afraid it would impede her movements too much. So she may be a bit baggy in certain areas!

They had to do two incisions instead of just one, so she looks like frankenrat- she has sutures, staples and glue holding her together right now.

Here are the cute stories of the day. When we brought her in to the vet, we were holding her until it was time for them to take her, at which point she suddenly kissed both Tony and I!! Something she hasn't done before... when we get rats as babies,we often encourage them to kiss but we hadn't had her for very long so we didn't necessarily expect it. But she did it right before the surgery! I was hoping that was not a kiss goodbye.

Then, after the surgery the vet student came in holding her- she was quite out of it still, but the minute she smelled or saw me, she perked up and came trotting over to me. I held her and she curled into my shirt immediately and kissed me again!!!

The vet had been about to say they couldn't release her yet because she was too groggy when suddenly she perked up!

Anyway, on the way home she was sleeping on my chest and periodically I would stick my head down and kiss her on the head, and then she would groggily give me a kiss back. :)

When we got her home just now, we gave her a bit of baby carrot w/ some peanut butter (yes, this was OK'd by the vet!) and she chowed down and then gave me another kiss. I think she's happy!

She'll be sore for awhile and now the tricky part is getting her to heal and not go after her stitches, but she seems to be doing very well!!! Tony and I are so happy!

The vet care she rec'd was excellent, and we weren't charged for labor which would have been close to $600 alone if we had gone to the first vet (they were asking $296 for one hour of surgery and this took 2 hours).

And the tale of Bernadette had everyone at the vet clinic in awe. YEAH!! So I will write more later- gotta go make sure she's nice and warm tonight. Much much love and thanks to all of you for your love and support!

P.S. Well, Bernadette is definitely awake now and showing no signs of pain. :) The bad news is she's already licking/nibbling at her staples... I'm trying to discourage her. Rats have very little by way of a neck so its almost impossible to fit them with little "collars" like you can dogs. Egads!! OK, I'm sleepy... will talk more later!

8/9/06

Miss Bernadette has tumors again- two of them now. She goes in to the vet on Saturday. And although its too late, maybe you can send some mojo to the puppy I saw hit (and run) by a car yesterday. Tony and I rushed her to the vet but in the end she had to be euthanized. I'm so crushed I can't even tell you. :( I can't talk more about it without crying again.

At least she is free of pain. So maybe the mojo should be sent to all the dogs in the world to keep them safe from harm. sad in Seattle, Rita.

8/13/06

Bernadette made it thru the surgery OK. Our vet said that he would not recommend another surgery for her however because it is so hard on her and she's getting older. There were two tumors- one was quite difficult to get out. She's at home and on pain meds now. She's such a trooper! I just love her.

8/23/06

OK, I had to share this bit of sweet news! There was a picnic at work last week while I was gone (while I was in Texas). Part of the picnic was a pet photo contest, just for fun. Before I left for Tx, I entered a picture of Disco dog and a picture of Miss Bernadette.

Well, I came back to work today to find a 1st place ribbon on my desk, attached to the picture of Bernadette I submitted. She won for "Most Exotic"!!!! :) Isn't that awesome?? :)

Years ago, Disco won first place in a pet store photo competition! Ah, my Diva Pets!

Miss Bernadette is doing great- sassy as can be. Her latest sutures are nearly completely healed already.

10/2/06

I feel like all I do lately is ask for Mojo but I'm hoping I can squeeze some more of this precious mojo from you all.

Miss Bernadette apparently had a stroke while we were gone and lost a lot of weight. I have her at work with me now as she's on an emergency feeding schedule of every 30 minutes. I need to get her weight back up. At this point, I don't know if she will recover or if we will have to put her to sleep.

Our vet is awesome and has even stopped by today to check on her. Obviously, the most important thing is to make sure she's not in any pain. Sadly, she also has another tumor growing. :( Dearest Bernadette could use some mojo!

10/29/06

I am sorry to report that Miss Bernadette had to be put to sleep yesterday. She had had a stroke about a month back and she had yet another tumor growing. Tony and I tried our best to rehabilitate her from her stroke, but the combination of stroke, another tumor, and her advancing age were too much to overcome.

I have consoled myself with the fact that we were blessed to have been in her life at all- she was such an amazing rattie adventuress!!! I am so thankful that she stepped in front of our car! :)

I will never ever forget that twist of fate that brought her to us and I will always miss little Miss Bernadette.

Rats!

During the "song of Bernadette" in 2006, my dearest friends from Bad Babies and Chubbyville rallied to help us raise enough $$ to pay for Bernadette's surgery. One way they did that was to create a most wonderful "fatbook" dedicated to Bernadette! One for me, one to auction off.

The books are so amazing- I cannot put into words how wonderful they are.

Because Tony and I didn't need the $$, we sent the extra book off to Bernie Berlin to auction off- she said she would auction it at some point to raise $$ for her dog rescues.

Here are the wonderful pictures of that book, courtesy of the hostess Teri Velazquez.

RICK SPRINGFIELD taught me about sex, life, and other things...

My latest trip down memory lane involves one of my biggest crushes, Rick Springfield.

I first discovered Rick when I was about 11 or 12 years old and its been an "affair of the heart" ever since (cue groan).

Seriously tho', Rick taught me all about sex, life and other things... his lyrics were far more adult, intelligent, complex and frankly sexual than anyone else I was listening to at the time. The darkness in his writing appealed to me during my teenage angst years and well beyond. He exposes his inner turmoil and pain with an openness that is deeply personal, refreshing, and touching all at once, and therein lies a great deal of his charm.

The songs he wrote about his father's death touched me deeply as a fatherless child (my dad died when I was 1), and over 20 years later, they held even more meaning for me when I recently faced the death of my Pop (my step dad). He managed to capture, far more eloquently than I can, what it feels like to lose someone you love.... what it feels like to be the one left behind.

Anyway, I, like pretty much every other girl I went to school with, had a huge crush on Rick back in the 80s and since my crushes seem to last eternally, it's no surprise that I kept up with Rick's career over the ensuing decades.

I was lucky enough to see Rick perform in 2002 at the Puyallup Fair and it was the experience of a lifetime. I couldn't believe Rick was ~53- his energy and, well, let's admit it, his physique (!) was that of someone half his age. He was on Fire (and so was every woman in the audience). These photos were taken by me at that show. :)

For my birthday this past October, my dear husband bought me tickets to see Rick again, this time at the Emerald Queen Casino down in Tacoma. The venue was not as pleasant as the Fair and with all EQ's anal-retentive rules (no photography, no getting on stage, etc), I think it frustrated Rick and the audience a bit. But his performance was every bit as amazing as it was a few years earlier and he looked jaw-dropping-ly stunning. I am now firmly convinced that he is Dorian Gray. He DOES NOT AGE! It just shouldn't be legal for someone at the age of 58 to look that damn amazing! Sigh.

If you've never been to a Rick Springfield concert, you owe it to yourself to go. He is one of the best live performers I've ever seen. As my friend Mish says, he manages to make even the largest of venues feel like a small, intimate performance. He calls audience members to the stage, he climbs out into the audience looking for that "human touch" and even borrows cell phones to both play slide guitar with and to call yer mum with. At the EQ Casino show we were treated to this exchange between Rick and a bewildered mom: "Hello Mom? Do you know who this is? Its Rick Springfield. I'm here with Paula. I've got a condom and I know how to use it!".

He is one of the most amazing guitar players I have ever had the pleasure of watching. At the EQ show he played his guitar off the stage railing, the mic stand, the speakers, using flowers (his signature and oh-so-cool move is to whack bouquets of roses against his guitar strings, sending the petals flying in what is a photographer's dream shot), cell phones, and pretty much anything that wasn't nailed down. His fingers flit across the strings as if they were on fire.

At this last EQ show I was able to pick up some great merchandise- two live dvds and one of his more recent albums. So I thought I'd give a quick review on them as well as on his 1982 live dvd.

Rick Springfield Live and Kickin' (1982)- DVD. This is THE classic live show I grew up watching. Rick is in top form, and somehow manages to make the universally reviled "half shirt" work. :) The highlights of this dvd for me are his performance of "I Get Excited" (which became the video for this hit song), his antics in Red Hot & Blue Love (pouring water all over the drums), and the extra footage of his quick costume change (for more reasons than you'd think). Thumbs way up on this one.

Rick Springfield Alive (2001)- DVD. This is a gem- full of behind the scenes videos of Rick and his band on tour between 1998 and 2001. Highlights on this one include him singing the double entendre laden Inside Sylvia at his gorgeous home in CA, the footage of Rick playing with his pooch, (one of the many reasons I've always loved Rick is that he is the ultimate dog lover!), improvising a bluesy "end of the tour baby" tune with his bandmates while in the limo on the way to the next gig, engaging in an spontaneous Beatles tribute in the lobby of his hotel, and the red hot footage of him performing live in 2001. This is real treat for Rick fans.

Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance (2004)- CD. I am blown away by this CD. Its one of his best ever. Its such a strong album- its grungy and dark and angry and harsh and his voice is shredded through a lot of it, but its powerful as hell. There is a raw energy to it that can't be beat. This album should have hit the top 10, all bias aside. Highlights include his cover of the Easy Beats' I'll Make you Happy, Jesus Saves ("white trash like you"), Perfect, I don't want anything from you, God gave you to everyone... Its a great cathartic album.

Rick Springfield Live in Rockford (also known as Live at the Coronado) (2006)- DVD. This is his newest dvd and it is amazing to put this in right after the 1982 dvd- you won't believe your eyes as to how little this man has changed in 24 years!! The highlights for me on this one include some of his newer material, including I'll Make You Happy (even my husband is ga-ga over this one), Jesus Saves, and Perfect, as well as his heart-wrenching tribute to his father - My Father's Chair- and of course, his antics in the audience during Love Somebody.

And while we're speaking of Rick, I linked some awesome videos to this blog (see above). You can see Rick playing Guitar on a couple of cool Zoot songs (his early Oz band), as well as some more recent kick-ass performances!

My Favorite Horror Films!

http://popculturepetridish.blogspot.com/2007/10/50-greatest-horror-movies-rotten.html

As you can see from the above link, my husband has counted down his top 50 horror films of all time, as a response to the list generated by Rotten Tomatoes, and this has inspired me to add my 2 cents to this 2 dollar bill.

I started out just making a top 50 list myself, and then decided I’d like to separate them out into a few categories instead. Naturally, there are valid arguments against some of these films being strictly within the horror genre, but that just goes to show you that labels are oftentimes meaningless.

I cheated a little- I have some films that tied for my affections so after spending a ridiculous amount of time trying to choose between them, I decided to just have some "TIES". So I picked more than 50. Sue me.

THE film that started my love of horror:

Dracula (1931). The original is the best, hands down. There's no arguing that Bela Lugosi is Dracula. And the man I wanted to marry as a child.

Films that Chilled Me:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). Forget the endless remakes- the original left a huge impression on me as a child. Its a brilliant film that manages to both entertain as well as stimulate deep philosophical discussions afterwards.

The Fly (1958). Again, forget the remakes. The original is my favorite- and it scarred me for life!

Kingdom of the Spiders (1977). OK so it may be a bit of a cheesy film but the ending will give you goosebumps. And besides, it features William Shatner. Need I say more?

Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968). This is my favorite of the Christopher Lee/Hammer Dracula films, and not just because it was the first Lee/Hammer Dracula film I saw as a child. I've seen it repeatedly over the years and am enamored each time. The opening scene with the church bell is shocking even today, and the use of lighting is riveting.

Psycho (1960). This is the only horror film that I had to turn off, compose myself, and then start watching again. It's that chilling. And the shower scene is nothing compared to the ending shots of Anthony Perkins looking up into the camera with an expression that even as I write this still gives me goosebumps. It is the single most horrifying scene ever filmed. What I want to know is, to what depths of depravity in his mind did Perkins have to sink to be able to pull an expression like that?

The Exorcist (1973). This film has been praised by those far more eloquent than me so all I will say is that I found it riveting.

Aliens (1986). You may argue that this is Sci-Fi not horror but explain that to my furiously pumping heart and oh-so-cramped hands (from clinging to the theatre seats). I thought this film was going to give me a heart attack at the age of 16!

M (1930). How director Fritz Lang manages to get the audience to sympathise with child murderer Peter Lorre remains a glorious mystery to me. One of the most chilling and haunting films ever made.

Phantom of the Opera (1925). The unmasking scene is still one of the most horrifying scenes ever filmed and in fact, still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. To think that the film is 82 years old!

TIE: In the vein of Psycho: Paranoiac (1963). I second Tony's praise of Oliver Reed's performance in Curse of the Werewolf, which almost made my list. But his performance in this film is an especially tasty treat! Cape Fear (1962) and Night of the Hunter (1955). It could be argued that both of these films are more "thriller" than "horror" but outside of Anthony Perkins in Psycho, the horror personified by Robert Mitchum in both of these films remains unsurpassed.

Jaws (1975). Scared the bejeebers out of me.

TIE: Soylent Green (1973), Omega Man (1971), and Last Man on Earth (1964). Three post-apocalyptic chillers starring Chuck Heston and Vincent Price respectively. I firmly believe that the best horror and sci-fi are the ones that make you really THINK.

Atmospheric Classics:

The Wolfman (1941). Wonderfully tragic tale; Lon Chaney Jr. at his best.

Frankenstein (1931). What more can be said about this film? Classic!

Bride of Frankenstein (1935). A more witty horror film you'd be hard-pressed to find. Brilliant all the way around.

The Invisible Man (1933). Claude Rains is absolutely delicious in this film- if you think Bride of Frankenstein has a wicked sense of humor, try this one on for size.

The Haunting (1961). The sound alone in this movie will knock your socks off. Its hands down some of the most brilliant use of sound I've ever heard in a film. Not to mention, a brilliant cast and script- its a home run for director Robert Wise. Plus, I'm a sucker for Russ Tamblyn.

The Mummy (1932). A romantic horror film. How often does that happen?

Cat People (1942). Great atmosphere in this little gem! You can see why it has become a cult favorite.

Nosfertu (1922). My favorite scene? The shadow of Nosfertu's hand clenching at the heart of his victim.... Its perfection.

Frankenstein Created Woman (1967). Peter Cushing. Need I say more?

TIE : House of Usher (1960). The first of the Corman Poe flicks, this one is perhaps not as brilliant as, say, Masque of the Red Death, it manages to evoke enough mystery to please any horror fan. And you have to love Vincent's appearance in this one. Dashing. Tomb of Ligeia (1964). Vincent Price. Notice a recurring theme here? I love his fashionable but brooding self in this one. An unusual film, but effective. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961). I agree with Tony that the last shot of Barbara Steele is chilling. Another great Price horror film.

Ha Ha- Horror!

Evil Dead II (1987). Bruce Campbell = funny.

Fright Night (1985). If you're any kind of horror fan, you can't help but love this film. I mean, it features Roddy McDowall for horror's sake!

Young Frankenstein (1974). Mel's greatest film. More fun than a roll in the hay.

Shaun of the Dead (2004). Hilarious. Frickin' Hilarious.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). I ask you, how can you resist this film?

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). Another humorous horror-themed film- a classic.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part II 1986). Only a handful of movies have dialogue as choice as this one. A more quotable horror film is hard to find!

The Raven (1963). Watching Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, and Boris Karloff goofing off is the dream of any classic horror fan.

Love at First Bite (1979). I can’t help it- I love this movie! George Hamilton is a comedic genius.

In for a Wild Ride:

GOKE Body Snatcher from Hell (1968). Tony says it all on his blog. This is a brilliant, chilling, psychedelic ride.

The Mask (1961). Put the Mask on NOW.

The Thing (1982). One of Carpenter's best, hands down.

The Sixth Sense (1999). I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this film.

The Dead Zone (1983). Hands down, the best film adaptation of a Stephen King novel.

The Prophecy (1995). Speaking of Christopher Walken, this film (well, the first 3 films actually) give him a chance to do what he does best- steal the screen! But watch out for some alluring work by both Eric Stoltz (whom we just don't see enough of these days!) and Viggo Mortenson.

Lake of Dracula (1971). Moody, colorful, Japanese gem. Genuinely spooky in places. Very atmospheric. Its one of 3 Japanese Dracula films from that same time frame. I have yet to watch the other two but this one makes me want to!

Wild Zero (2005). You can't go wrong with Guitar Wolf, zombies, musical numbers, hermaphrodites, flying saucers, hot pants, flaming guitar picks, zombie love, and pompadours. Trust me on this.

Uzumaki (2000). I can't write more about it right now because my screen is forming a perfect spiral that I find completely mesmerizing and I can't tear my eyes away....endless, circling.... spiral.....

28 Days Later (2002). A great modern take on the traditional zombie film. (OK, those of you who want to argue about whether they are really zombies or not, please just silently roll your eyes and move on to the next one).

Just plain fun!

Count Yorga (1970). Robert Quarry is enticing and wicked in person as well as in this colorful vampire flick. He's way more interesting than Frank Langella in the 70's Dracula remake.

TIE: The Blob (1958). OK, so some people may consider this to be a cheesy film, but I think it works. The build up of uncertainty and terror is effective even if some think the monster is less so. The Tingler (1959). "Infofreak" from Australia describes this film as "b-grade thriller with a hidden core of surrealism almost worthy of Bunuel or Cocteau" and I couldn't agree more.

TIE: Bat People (1974). I love this movie. Its got an interesting premise, some great lesser-known actors, and a kind of innocent gusto that I just find so appealing, and Return of Dracula (1958). Francis Lederer turns in a chillingly effective performance as Dracula in this too-oft-forgotten gem.

Blacula (1972). I'm a sucker for vampire films and this one, tho' often relegated to the cheesy exploitation section of your local video store, is a gem thanks to William Marshall's eloquent and classy performance.

TIE: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (1962). You may chuckle but you will also cringe. This is a truly terrifying film- a glimpse into psychosis the like of which you may never see (unless you're me and have a Baby Jane of your own in your family, which I do, but that's another story....) and Strait Jacket (1964). Let's get this strait, er, straight. I love Joan Crawford. So all of you wire hanger waving freaks can just go play by yourselves and leave me alone to enjoy her chain-smoking, booze swilling boyfriend stealing homicidal self. So there.

Theater of Blood (1973). Vincent Price + Robert Morley + Poodles = HORROR. That's all I'll say on the matter.

TIE: Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957). Giant Crab Monster speaks French after eating a Frenchman. Could there be better filmmaking than that? I say no. The Killer Shrews (1959). Put mops on dogs' heads and you have the ultimate in terror! Brain From Planet Arous (1957). John Agar's best performance as a maniacal brain from outer space, with a scene stealing effort by the hero of the film- a dog. (Natch!) Wasp Woman (1960). Susan Cabot turns in a riveting performance in this Corman classic- Viva La Feminism!

The Night of the Lepus (1972). not so GIANT rabbits EATING tomatoes but LOOKING FIERCE! (Take that Jasleen!)

TIE: Blood of Dracula (1957), I was a Teenage Werewolf (1957), and Monster on Campus (1958). Three great films full of angst and raw energy.

Fairy Jar Swap!

Here's the gorgeous Fairy Jar I received from my dear friend Colleen Kent, who obviously knows me very well!! :)

The bottle says: "The perfect 1950s bottle fairy enjoyed cleaning the bottle and meeting her husbandy at the bottle opening wearing nothing but a string of pearls and a loving smile"

THANKS COLLEEN! :) I LOVE IT!!!

What have I been up to, art-wise?

Glad you asked! Here are some of my latest ventures.

Below is a fairy I'm working on for a "Fairy in a Jar" swap! :)
I haven't named the fairy yet but I think I'm closed to finished with her saucy self.

I'm also currently involved in a RR. The theme for this particular book in the RR was "Marie Antoinette". I did three spreads:

This last page is done with fabric... the white bunch in the middle is a bookmark of sorts, done with gauze/mesh material. It looks better in person! (I hope!)

I also finished a poison bottle for another swap. I don't know if you can see it in the second picture, but inside the bottle is a skeleton hand tied to some sticks. Its my Voodoo Venom potion.

ODE TO SHATNER

(A still from Devil's Rain, autographed for little ole me by The Man himself, William Shatner)

I thought I would take this moment to point out what I'm sure many of you have already seen, admired, and worshipped: Shatner doing "Rocket Man".

Speaking of The Man, recently there was a gallery show in Canada in which various artists created works in homage to Big Bill. The show was such a success that a book came out of it and naturally, being the fan of Shat that I am, I had to buy it. The verdict? Blindingly Brilliant! Great art, great Shatnerian quotes- what more could you ask for?

Or simply try searching YouTube for more Shatner videos. You really can't get enough. Really.

Best of all, get it all straight from the Man himself at:
