Shark Eyes

(2 Minute Read. 14Jan2026)

Would you like to have perfect eyesight?

What if a fish, once thought to be nearly blind, could someday help you see better?

Most people in their 60s do not have excellent eyesight because the lenses of their eyes have become clouded with significant cataracts. These usually start developing in your 40s as proteins in the lens start to break down. The result is gradually worsening blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, and increased sensitivity to glare from lights.

Cataract surgery involves replacing the clouded lens with an artificial lens. For most people, it is quite successful in restoring clear vision.

One famous exception to the typical development of cataracts is Moses. The Great Creator preserved his eyesight and health till he died at age 120.
Although Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. (Deuteronomy 34:7)

Clear eyesight at Moses’s advanced age was apparently quite unusual even 3500 years ago, since the chronicler explicitly mentioned it.

Shark Eyes

Researchers may be able to learn something about preserving clear eyesight from sharks. Greenland sharks are the longest-living vertebrates. Scientists say that they live for as long as 400 years. The fish lives in the dark, frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Until recently, the Greenland shark was believed to be mostly blind. But a just-published research study in the journal Nature Communications concludes that these sharks maintain good vision throughout their four centuries of life, and they can see well in very low light.
(See The visual system of the longest-living vertebrate, the Greenland shark, Nature Communications, 05 January 2026.)

Rhodopsin is a protein that supports vision in dim and blue light. The researchers found it in the retinas of Greenland shark specimens over 100 years old. They also found genes involved with DNA repair mechanisms for the shark eyes.

Future research may help clarify why the lens of the Greenland shark remains clear for hundreds of years. This knowledge could help reduce the need for cataract surgery in humans.

This is another example of studying the Great Creator‘s work in order to improve man’s existence.
One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of Your majesty
And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts,
And I will tell of Your greatness.
(Psalm 145:4-6)

Questions to Ponder

1. What brief comment about the Greenland shark’s eye design could open a conversation praising the Great Creator?
2. What practical innovations have you built into your life deriving from your worldview honoring the Great Creator?

Best of 2025 Bible-Science Guy Articles

Below are my choices for the 14 Best Bible-Science Guy Blog Posts from 2025, listed in order of publication date. I chose the posts I liked best — the ones I found most interesting, most important, or best-written. Other factors that influenced selection included reader views and reader feedback.

My Greatest Thought (January 15)
What is the greatest thought that has ever passed through your head? Daniel Webster replied to this question with an uncommon answer. All too often, people devote their thinking to the trivial and ephemeral. Great thoughts are worth formulating, analyzing, and pondering.

Monkeys Typing Shakespeare? (February 5)
Could an infinite number of monkeys typing for an infinite length of time produce the complete works of Shakespeare? Is this a good argument for evolution?

Keeping Your Valentine (February 12)
Here are four essentials for marital success and happiness.

Surprised by Uranus (April 23)
I view the many surprising things about the planet Uranus as the Great Creator’s fingerprints. These surprises contradict evolutionary dogma and point to a Creator.

Slow Poison (May 7)
“To regularly hear unscriptural teaching is a serious thing. It is a continual dropping of slow poison into the mind.” -J. C. Ryle

Remember! (May 21)
Do you remember the Biblical “remember” command that is rarely remembered?

If Smart People Reject Creation . . . (June 4)
If many people who are much smarter than I am reject Creation, is it likely that they are right and I am wrong?

Junk DNA? (August 13)
Evolutionists have long proclaimed that most of DNA is junk with no purpose. But the scientists are now admitting that what evolutionists previously considered “junk DNA” is not junk at all. It has specific, valuable functions!

Smart Atheists? (August 20)
No one is smart enough to be an atheist!

How to Write a Thousand Blogs (August 27)
How is it possible to write 1,000 blog articles? By what process did the Great Creator bring this about?

Slippery Slope to Evil (September 3)
Why is denying the Great Creator the beginning of a slippery slope to evil?

Where’s Charlie? (September 17)
Charlie Kirk was a highly articulate defender of faith in Jesus Christ, of unborn life, of family, of marriage, and of freedom. He was assassinated because he persuasively spoke the truth with reason, logic, and appeal. The only way to see Charlie again is to meet him in Heaven. Read the sequel What Would Charlie Want Said? for excerpts from a few of the many speakers who held up the name of Jesus Christ and the glory of God at Charlie’s memorial service.

Peace Like a River (October 15)
After years of turmoil and war in the Middle East, President Trump has put together a deal for peace.

Who Created God? (November 12)
The question “Who created God?” is nonsensical. Since God had no beginning, it is not even logical to ask who created Him.

Are You a “Baby Jesus”?

(2 Minute Read. 31Dec2025)

My considerate wife watches quite a few football games with me. During a recent game, however, she was murmuring and shaking her head. “That’s blasphemous!” she fussed. “They really ought not to call a guy that!”

Hurricane Malachi

She was objecting to the nickname “Baby Jesus” given to one of the Miami Hurricanes players, freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney. He had the winning touchdown for 10-seed University of Miami against 7-seed Texas A & M in the first round of the College Football Playoffs. Miami won the game 10-3 on December 20, 2025. Toney’s post-game interview was featured, and he thanked God at least twice.

Malachi Toney’s nickname “Baby Jesus” originated from his exceptional talent in youth football. At age 7, Toney played quarterback for his youth team. His coach coined that nickname after he scored a game-winning touchdown on a 40-yard quarterback sweep.

The nickname stuck through youth and high school football and even into college due to his ability to make spectacular game-changing plays as defenses struggled to contain him. Even Miami’s coach, Mario Cristobal, acknowledged the nickname in spring practices, confirming its widespread use.

But Toney’s family has reverence for the Great Creator, so they understandably prefer not to use that nickname, since its intended usage does trivialize and profane our Lord’s name. Toney himself is an earnest follower of Christ.

It struck my wife as so improper to call a man this precious name above all names. She is reverent with stalwart loyalty to the honor of our Savior.

At the same time, some Scriptural concepts kept running through my mind. Maybe this unusual moniker could spur a few provocative questions.

Baby Jesus

Certainly it is flippant and disrespectful to demean our Lord’s honored name because of someone’s athletic ability, which is, of course, a gift from the Great Creator. But what if we started from scratch and did a little Bible digging? Could there be a legitimate context to view a human as a Baby Jesus?

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. (1 John 3:2)

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren.
(Romans 8:29)

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
(Galations 3:27)

My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you.
(Galations 4:19)

To whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27)

The one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. (1 John 2:6)

For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16)

Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. (Colossians 3:17)

In the book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis said Christians should become “little Christs” or, in similar terminology, a “Baby Jesus.” He said the Church should “draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs.”

Becoming a Little Christ or a Baby Jesus means not just believing in Jesus, but becoming so filled with His Spirit that you begin to live, act, and love like Him. It’s a continuous, ongoing transformation of your character into conformity with Jesus so that you live and act as He would.

So in addition to remembering, honoring, and celebrating the birth of the Baby Jesus during the Christmas season, may we strive to become a Baby Jesus in the Biblical sense throughout life.

Questions to Ponder

1. How could being called “Baby Jesus” be a compliment?
2. What transformation are you undertaking to develop the character of a “little Christ”?

Unwrapping Christmas Truths

(3 Minute Read plus video. 24Dec2025)

Who once gave a Christmas talk that in nine minutes included at least 17 true statements about Jesus Christ and His birth?
A. President Jimmy Carter
B. Billy Graham
C. Charlie Kirk
D. Pastor John MacArthur
E. President Donald J. Trump

Before looking at the answer below, can you guess who once gave a Christmas message so stuffed with Biblical truth about Jesus Christ?

17 Biblical Truths About Jesus

Amazingly, this man’s brief message actually contained more Biblical theology than most modern sermons. Here is a list of the 17 Biblical truths I heard in this man’s Christmas message.

1. Jesus’ birth was miraculous.
2. His birth occurred 2,000 years ago on a glorious night (Luke 2:1-14).
3. Jesus is the Son of God.
4. Jesus is Lord.
5. Jesus is our Savior.
6. His title is Christ, meaning Messiah or Chosen One.
7. He came down from heaven to live with us (John 6:38).
8. He was full of grace and truth (quoting John 1:14).
9. He brought the gift of God’s love into the world.
10. He brought the promise of salvation for all peoples.
11. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. (John 1:4).
12. He has brought us out of darkness (Colossians 1:13).
13. Jesus brought light into human history (John 8:12; 12:46).
14. He calls us to love one another (John 13:35).
15. He calls us to serve one another (Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 4:10).
16. He formed each unborn child in God’s image (Jeremiah 1:5; Genesis 1:27).
17. Jesus’ coming to earth is the true source of greatness, happiness, and strength (John 8:32; 10:10).

So just who is the man who confidently and publicly delivered so much truth, and when and where did he do it?

Can you guess which one of these men
A. President Jimmy Carter
B. Billy Graham
C. Charlie Kirk
D. Pastor John MacArthur
E. President Donald J. Trump
gave this Christmas message before I give you the answer?

The answer is probably not who you might at first think.

So who is it?

The Answer

Answer: E. President Donald J. Trump

On December 4, 2025, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the 103rd annual National Christmas Tree lighting in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Trump lit the tree, which the National Park Service said is a 35-foot red spruce from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest in Virginia.

President Trump delivered a strong message of faith at the National Christmas Tree Lighting. Here is a 9-minute YouTube video of the ceremony with President Trump’s message.

Maybe you let the phrases just flow by like poetry of the season, but at a second look, 17 Scriptural ideas are clearly proclaimed to the nation by the President. Here is the relevant portion of President Trump’s address.

“During this holy season, Christians everywhere rejoice at the miracle in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago when the Son of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, came down from heaven to be with us. (Crowd cheers.) You’re right. Full of grace and truth, He brought the gift of God’s love into the world and the promise of salvation for every person and every nation. . . . Tonight, this beautiful evergreen tree glows bright on the dark and cold winter night and reminds us of the words of the Gospel of John. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. Beautiful words. With the birth of Jesus, human history turned from night to day. His word and His example call us to love one another, to serve one another, and to honor the sacred truth that every child is specially made in the image of God. . . . So as we prepare to celebrate the miracle of Christmas, we thank God for His many blessings. And together we rejoice at the true source of greatness, happiness, and strength. The good news is that glorious night 2,000 years ago, think of it, 2,000 years ago. It was indeed a glorious night.”

The origin and purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the One who was born to die in order to save His people from their sins and give them eternal life. Thanks to President Trump, this message was boldly elucidated at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.

Questions to Ponder

1. What Christ-focused experiences do you enjoy in December with your family?
2. Since “Christmas” is being mentioned everywhere, what words of honor to the Great Creator can you sprinkle into friendly conversations to remind people of the reason for the season?

2025 Christmas Quiz Answers

(5 Minute Read. 17Dec2025)

Adoration of the Shepherds
He who holds the universe together
Colossians 1:16-17
humbled Himself to be born as a man.
(By Italian Guido Reni, 1575–1642)

Somebody once declared that His words were so important that they would never disappear in the dim mists of history; in fact, they would even outlast heaven and earth (Mark 13:31). Today, over 2,000 years later, millions still read His words daily. And every year, most of the world stops work to celebrate His birth. This person, Jesus of Nazareth, is the most important person of history. No one else even comes close.

The sixth verse of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing succinctly explains why He left Heaven for Earth:

Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth

Last week I posted my
2025 Christmas Quiz
consisting of 12 questions about Christmas. If you haven’t taken the quiz yet, click the quiz link above to try the quiz before you look at the answers below.

Here are the 12 original quiz questions followed by answers and explanations. Links to supporting Bible verses are included with each answer for the Bible questions.

A. North Pole, Inc.
B. Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland
C. Christmas World
D. Amazon

Answer: B. Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland
Ninety minutes north of Detroit in Frankenmuth, MI, is Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store covering five-and-a-half football fields. Open year round, it offers a vast selection of nativity scenes with hundreds of different styles available for purchase, from life-size versions to miniature crèche ornaments. Owner Wally Bronner amassed a vast collection of hundreds of nativity scenes from cultures around the world, which are showcased in the store. The company’s motto is “Enjoy Christmas—It’s HIS birthday; Enjoy life—It’s HIS way.” Even on maps, the Savior’s name is in all caps.

5. How did the pregnant Mary get from Nazareth to Bethlehem?
A. She walked
B. She rode a donkey
C. She rode a camel
D. She rode in a cart
E. She rode in Joseph’s Ferrari
F. The Bible does not say

Answer: F. The Bible does not say
Almost every depiction in movies, magazines, and books of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem shows Mary on a donkey. But the Bible does not indicate the mode of travel.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:4-7)

Nevertheless, from very early times, Christians had the image of Mary riding a donkey to Bethlehem. For example, the Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal Gospel probably written about AD 145, says that Joseph used a donkey to bring Mary to Bethlehem. The travel distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem is about 90 miles, including some very rough terrain. It is improbable that a heavily pregnant Mary would walk this distance, so riding a donkey or in a donkey-drawn cart is very likely.

6. Which gift to the infant Messiah is beneficial for skin conditions, the digestive system, the immune system, and the nervous system?
A. Gold from the Magi
B. Frankincense from the Magi
C. Myrrh from the Magi
D. Linen swaddling cloths from Mary’s friends in Nazareth
E. Natural organic manger sawdust from the innkeeper

Answer: B. Frankincense from the Magi
Frankincense, also called olibanum, comes from the resin of Boswellia trees native to Somalia and Pakistan. This aromatic resin is transformed into incense, perfume, and frankincense essential oil, which is made via steam distillation of the dry resin. Frankincense contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects. Frankincense is antiseptic (kills infectious microorganisms), astringent (causes tissues to constrict), vulnerary (helps to heal wounds), and sedative (promotes calm and sleep).

Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim
from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol
painted by Jessie Willcox Smith

11. A Christmas Carol is the fanciful story of cruel miser Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. As a result, Scrooge is changed into a kind, generous man. What Scripture is found in this story by Charles Dickens, first published in 1843?
A. Verses from Isaiah 53
B. Verses from Psalm 91
C. John 3:16
D. Mark 9:36
E. Luke 2:7

Answer: D. Mark 9:36
In Dickens’ book, Mark 9:36 is quoted when the miser Ebenezer Scrooge has a vision of Tiny Tim’s death: The noisy little Cratchits were as still as statues in one corner, and sat looking up at Peter, who had a book before him, reading, And He took a child, and set him in the midst of them. (Mark 9:36)
If you answered Psalm 91, that is understandable, since it occurred in the 1951 film version titled Scrooge. During the section Christmas Yet to Come, Peter Cratchit, played by John Charlesworth, reads,
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is thy refuge, even the Most High thy habitation. There shall be no evil before thee, neither shall any plague come by thy dwelling. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. (Psalm 91:9-10,15)
As Charles Dickens’ character Tiny Tim said, “God Bless us all, everyone!

There is none righteous, not even one;
There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
All have turned aside,
together they have become useless;
There is none who does good,
There is not even one. (Romans 3:10-12)

12. If Santa used the Great Creator’s Ten Commandments as his standard for “naughty or nice,” would you rate as Naughty or Nice?
A. Nice, I’ve never lied or stolen anything. (Exodus 20:15-16)
B. Nice, I’ve never used God’s name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)
C. Nice, I’ve never disrespected or disobeyed my parents.
    (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3)
D. Nice, I’ve never lusted or sinned sexually. (Exodus 20:14,17; Matthew 5:27-28)
E. Naughty! I sin every day in thought, word, or deed. (Romans 3:10-23)

Answer: E. Naughty! I sin every day in thought, word, or deed.
It does not matter what Santa thinks, whether he decides you are “naughty” or “nice.” What matters is how you do on Judgment Day. Will you be innocent or guilty of breaking God’s law? What does your conscience say? Innocent or Guilty?
Estimating a minimum of only three sins of thought, word, deed, or omission per day, gives about 1,100 sins every year and 77,000 sins in a 70-year lifetime. That is a lot of sin!
Thus we humans deserve the Great Creator’s righteous judgment. All who have broken God’s Law are guilty and justly deserve Hell.
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

All of us are in dire need of mercy from the Great Judge of the universe.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned,
And done what is evil in Thy sight.
(Psalm 51:1-4)

Happily, there is a way to avoid the Guilty verdict and punishment from the Judge.
The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works. (Psalm 145:8-9)
God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
(2 Corinthians 5:19)
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

2025 Christmas Quiz

(3 Minute Read. 10Dec2025)

The birth of Jesus of Nazareth was no mere accident of history. As C.S. Lewis said in Joyful Christian,
“It was the central event in the history of the Earth — the very thing the whole story has been about.”

This is why history is split in two at His birth. This is why every date is measured from His birth. Every email, every newspaper, every book references the first Christmas via dates. Time is split into two eras, BC and AD, years before and after the birth of Christ. Even nowadays, with the effort to instead use era labels CE and BCE (Common Era and Before Common Era) in order to avoid explicit reference to Christ, the dividing line is still His date of birth.

Who would ever think of sending a Baby to save the world from evil, sin, and death? But that is exactly what the Great Creator did on the occasion we celebrate every year at Christmas. As the prophet Isaiah wrote, His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Here is my annual Christmas Quiz reminding us all of the One who was born to die. Below are 12 quiz questions about Christmas. Try the quiz first without using the Bible or the internet. Answers with comments will appear in next week’s blog post,

Focus on Christmas

(3 Minute Read. 3Dec2025)

What is uppermost in your mind as Christmas approaches?

It is all too easy to become distracted from the purpose of the holiday! Decorating, shopping, baking cookies, cooking special meals, wrapping presents, attending parties, visiting family and friends, struggling with to-do lists — all these Christmas preparations can result in a misplaced focus. These plans and activities seem inescapable and can overwhelm the purpose of the holiday.

The origin and purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the One who was born to die in order to save His people from their sins and give them eternal life.

When our children were still at home, we spent the month of December on activities that concentrated attention on the origin and meaning of Christmas. Here are four practical suggestions for family activities to bring laser focus on the reason for the season. These have all been field-tested in my own family.

1. Read a Christmas Harmonization

Here is a Christmas Events Harmonization I prepared, which I would read daily to our children during the Christmas season. It merges all the Gospel passages telling about the Birth of Jesus Christ to help put the events in the proper order. To keep the children’s interest, I would keep halting unpredictably as I read, pointing to different kids to supply the next word or phrase. This helped them learn the Biblical records of Jesus’ birth. As a result, after several years, the kids almost knew the Bible passages by heart.

2. Scrambled Christmas Flash Cards

Make picture flash cards of key Birth-of-Christ Biblical events. An easy way to do this is to cut out Christmas card pictures or online images and paste them on index cards with event titles or descriptions. Shuffle the cards and have people arrange them in order on a table. Knowing the order of incarnation events comes naturally after having done Activity #1 for several days. See the 2019 Christmas Quiz for a list of the 25 events I used with my children and for examples of Christmas Flash Cards.

3. Act Out the Christmas Account

Dramatically act out various events of the Biblical account of Jesus’ birth. Events that kids especially enjoy dramatizing include the angelic visits to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds; Herod and the Magi; the emergency flight to Egypt; and Herod’s massacre of Bethlehem boys. Let your children dress up in Bible-days clothes to increase the learning effect. Repeat the dramatic reenactments and switch around the roles to give different children the chance to play different people.

4. Ask Questions to Stimulate Thinking

Sprinkle thought questions throughout the activities and discuss them with your family. Throughout December, amidst daily life with your family or while in the car, ponder and discuss the gripping meaning of the remarkable events of Christ’s coming. Here are some possible questions to stimulate thoughtful discussions.
– Why did Gabriel appear directly to Mary, but angelic visits to Joseph were via dreams?
– How would Mary have felt upon first hearing from the angel Gabriel about conceiving the Son of God by the Holy Spirit? What steps of faith did Mary take following this news?
– How did Joseph feel when he first learned his fiancée Mary was having a baby? How did he demonstrate faith and obedience after the angel’s visit?
– How did Joseph know the angel messages in his dreams were “real” and not just his own imaginations?
– What did Jesus give up by leaving heaven and coming to Earth to save us?
– Why was Jesus’ birth announced to the shepherds instead of to the Jewish leaders?
– Why were Simeon and Anna so stirred by the infant’s visit to the temple?
– Of what use were the magi’s gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Joseph and Mary?
– Why was Egypt selected for the escape from Herod?
– How does savoring these events affect our prayers?

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11)

Questions to Ponder

1. What Christ-focused experiences do you enjoy in December with your family?
2. Since “Christmas” is being mentioned everywhere, what words of honor to the Great Creator can you sprinkle into friendly conversations to remind people of the reason for the season?

Turkey: Titan of the Table

(3 Minute Read. 26Nov2025)

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and I’m looking forward to eating some turkey.

Turkey is a large bird with lots of meat. The tasty delicacy on your Thanksgiving table was probably raised in a farm operation, but turkeys are also hunted in the wild. In Michigan, over 5 million turkeys are sold each year, but less than 50,000 turkeys are bagged by hunters. A spring hunting trip has a 40% chance of success, but only 15% of fall turkey hunters can put a bird on the table.

Several times while hiking off-trail through woods, I have flushed wild turkeys. It has been somewhat startling as they suddenly explode up into the air, only a few feet away, with a thunderous beat of their wings. One of these thundering turkeys was a hen sitting on a nest of eggs.

Ben Franklin expressed a preference for the turkey over the bald eagle for the country’s symbol in a 1784 letter to his daughter. He thought the turkey was more respectable than the eagle due to its courage and native American origin. Franklin considered the eagle to be a lazy scavenger that stole food from other birds.

What’s so great about turkey? Why do I enjoy eating it so much?

Turkey Benefits

In addition to its good taste, turkey meat is highly nutritious with a rich supply of essential nutrients. It therefore contributes to key aspects of health, particularly muscle growth and maintenance.

Turkey is a good source of high-quality protein that contains all nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are the ones the human body cannot make on its own and must get from food. They are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. These amino acids are needed for many bodily functions such as building proteins, making enzymes, repairing muscle tissue, immune system responses, making neurotransmitters in the brain, regulating blood sugar, and absorbing minerals.

The amino acid tryptophan helps produce serotonin and vitamin B3 (niacin), as well as playing an important role in boosting the immune system. Serotonin helps regulate sleep, mood, appetite, and pain. It also helps produce melatonin, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle.

When properly cooked, turkey meat is moist, succulent, and flavorful. This is due to its fat, two-thirds of which is of the favorable unsaturated type.

Turkey is also a good source of B vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin). Niacin is important for efficient energy production. Pyridoxine supports amino acid formation and helps produce neurotransmitters. Cobalamin is vital for DNA production and the formation of red blood cells. Folate is involved in the creation of red blood cells, forming DNA, and preventing birth defects.

Turkey meat is also loaded with key minerals, including selenium, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. Selenium helps produce thyroid hormones which regulate metabolism and growth. Zinc is needed for numerous processes, including protein synthesis, enzyme reactions, and gene expression. Phosphorus is essential for bone health.

Give Thanks

When you enjoy your Thanksgiving turkey, remember to offer a prayer of thanks to the Great Creator. He is the One who created such a beneficial food for mankind.
God richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17)
In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Jesus set an example of giving thanks for food before a meal at the Feeding of the 5,000.
Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. (John 6:11)

Even give thanks after your meal!
When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you. (Deuteronomy 8:10)

Questions to Ponder

1. Why is giving thanks so important? (Hint: Romans 1:21-23)
2. Since “Thanksgiving” is being mentioned everywhere, what sentence of thanks to the Great Creator can you sprinkle into friendly conversations?

Active Thanks

(2 Minute Read. 19Nov2025)

What Thanksgiving preparations are swirling in your mind as this holiday rapidly approaches? Thanksgiving is a day specially set apart to express gratitude to the Great Creator for His manifold blessings.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

(Psalm 100:4)
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.
(Psalm 107:1)

Here are five practical suggestions for family Thanksgiving activities for next week. They are specially designed to promote an attitude of gratitude in both children and adults.

1. Make a Thanks Chain

Have your kids cut strips of construction paper of various colors. On each strip, use crayons or Sharpies to write a way God has blessed them in the past year. Use tape, glue, or a stapler to make a chain of loops from their strips. Hang the colorful chain in a prominent place to remind everyone of God’s goodness and blessings.

2. Recount a Bible Event Involving Thanks

Retell an event from the Bible to impress the importance of thankfulness. For example, describe the account of Jesus Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1-13). This is one of Jesus’ most significant miracles since it is the only one that is reported in all four Gospels. It probably generated more total expressions of gratitude and praise to God than any other of His miracles. Discuss how thankful the hungry people must have been for the generous meal at the end of a long day.

But the people quickly forgot! They neglected to savor Jesus’ provision and recall it with gratitude. The very next day they said, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.‘” (John 6:30-31) Astonishingly, they even cited the Wilderness manna miracle of bread from heaven as an example of the kind of sign they wanted. Talk with your children about the importance of giving thanks — even for simple blessings like a meal. Discuss how crucial it is to remember blessings with gratitude.

3. Act Out a Bible Event Involving Thanks

Jesus once healed 10 lepers, but only one, a Samaritan, bothered to thank Him (Luke 17:11–19). Jesus even expressed surprise, saying, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine — where are they? Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?”

Dramatically act out this event by bandaging your children with rags or TP and having them play the roles of Jesus and the lepers. The leper kids should all rush away, with only one returning to fall on his face and thank Jesus for healing him. Repeat several times to switch around the roles to give different children the chance to play Jesus and the thankful leper. Discuss with your children the importance of expressing thanks and praise to God. Emphasize how Jesus also thought this was essential.

4. Do a Thanks March

After Nehemiah led rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem in the mid-fifth century BC, the Israelites celebrated with with hymns of thanksgiving during a march atop the walls (Nehemiah 12:27–47). Give family members real or improvised musical instruments like rattles, drums, harmonicas, recorders, kazoos, or horns. Like Nehemiah, lead them in a march around your house or yard singing songs of thanks and praise such as Count Your Blessings. For bonus fun, dress your kids in Bible-days clothing for this re-enactment.

5. Read a Thanksgiving Psalm

Read Psalm 100 aloud together as a family each day for a week. Offer a special prize coupon for memorizing the Psalm or some portion of it.

Discuss how, in the middle of this psalm of thanks, evolution is denied while creation by God is proclaimed: Know that the Lord Himself is God. It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves. Lead your children to give thanks to their Creator for making them and giving them life.

Questions to Ponder

1. Why is giving thanks so important? (Hint: Romans 1:21-23)
2. Since “Thanksgiving” is being mentioned everywhere, what sentence of thanks to the Great Creator can you sprinkle into friendly conversations?

Who Created God?

(2 Minute Read. 12Nov2025)

One of the things I remember puzzling over repeatedly as a first-grader was the idea that God has always existed.

I remember kneeling over the back of a chair in our living room to look out a window while mentally struggling and struggling to understand how God could be eternal in the past. How was it possible, I wondered, for someone to have no beginning — to have always existed?

Unbelievers often use this mystery to challenge a central Christian claim. Believers frequently argue that the existence of the universe implies the existence of its Creator — God. Skeptics reply with the question, “Then who created God?”

The skeptic tries to dispute the Christian’s argument for the existence of God with this argument:
“If the universe needs a cause, then God needs a cause. But if God does not need a cause, then why does the universe need a cause?”

The answer is simple. The universe needs a cause because it had a beginning. Unlike the universe, God had no beginning, so He has no cause.

The Eternal God is the creator of the entire space-time universe. He created time and is therefore outside time. God has no beginning in time. He has always existed, so he does not need a cause.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. (Psalm 90:2)

Here is the argument:
1. Everything that has a beginning must have a cause.
2. The universe had a beginning.
3. Therefore, the universe has a cause.

This type of argument does not apply to the Great Creator because He has no beginning.

Since the universe did have a beginning, then it must have had a Beginner. This argument for the existence of God is powerful because the two premises listed above that lead to the conclusion are unshakably evident.

First, the self-evident fundamental law of cause and effect is that things that begin have a cause that makes them come into existence. And nothing, the universe included, can cause itself — because that would mean that the thing existed to cause itself before it came into existence. That’s logically absurd!

Second, almost all people — both Christians and atheists — agree that the universe had a beginning. One of the simplest arguments that the universe had a beginning is based on the Laws of Thermodynamics, the most fundamental laws of science.
1st Law: The total amount of mass plus energy in the universe is constant.
2nd Law: The amount of energy available for work is decreasing (entropy increases to a maximum).

If the total amount of mass and energy is limited, and the amount of usable energy is running down, then the universe cannot have existed forever. If so, it would have already exhausted all usable energy. Therefore, since we still do have usable energy, the universe must have started a finite time ago. And therefore it must have had a Starter.

In summary, the question “Who created God?” is illogical. It makes no sense. It is analogous to asking “What does the color red sound like?” It is a category confusion and makes no sense. Since God had no beginning, it makes no sense to ask who created Him.

Questions to Ponder

1. If someone asked you, “What does the color red sound like?” how would you answer?
2. How does this apply to the title question?
