30 Day About Your Books Challenge

I want to start off May with a book challenge. The prompts will be about books I have, be it physical or digital. They can even include past books I’ve owned. Some of these prompts are my own creation, and for some I’ll be drawing inspiration from challenges I’ve seen on instagram.

I’ll be honest, I don’t have the best track record at actually completing a challenge, but I’ll always try. In the end, that’s what’s important. Of course, everyone will be free to use the prompts I post. =)

See you soon!

[Book Review] Star Wars: Master and Apprentice

Title: Star Wars: Master and Apprenticehnbkjrf56vs21

Author: Claudia Gray

Published Date: April 16th 2019

Genre: Science Fiction

Page Number: 330

Personal Rating:

four-stars

(Also posted on https://tsukinotes.wordpress.com/)

Plot (No Spoilers):

Jedi Rael Averross, who happens to be Dooku’s previous Padawn, requests Qui-Gon Jinn to help in a political matter on the planet Pijal, where he has been stationed for the past eight years. Obi-Wan is seventeen here, so it’s been four years since he was accepted as a Padawan. Or so I think. Important for readers to know that this is not based on the lore from the Jedi Apprentice Series. Which I personally hate for many reasons. Some which will be explained later on (in the spoilery bit of this review).

Obi-Wan’s relationship with his Master is full of tension, misunderstandings and difficulties. Both struggle to understand the other. Both believing they are a bad match because of a fault (or faults) within themselves. After suprising news is sprung on Obi-Wan, their relationship starts to spiral even more. But the mission comes first.

Master and Apprentice join Rael on Pijal to protect a young Princess as she is set to take the throne of her world and sign a treaty with one of the biggest corporation out there. Opposition threatens violence and it’s a run against time to find them and put an end to their attacks. If only that had remained the only problem.

I quite liked the book. I feel like in a few days I might change my rating down to 3.5 stars though. I thought both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were well represented. Their characteristics were in accordance to previous books and films. There were a few things that were different and bugged me.

THINGS I LIKED (NO SPOILERS-I THINK):

World Book and Copyright Day 2020

Crossposting to https://tsukinotes.wordpress.com/ (this is my other blog where I mostly write about anime, mangas and all things otaku or geek)

Amazing that I learnt about this day just today. Being a book lover and not knowing about this is… embarrassing. So, anyway. I did a bit of research to find out what this is about and how it all got started. The date was set by UNESCO in 1995 for the 23rd of April in honor of the deaths of Miguel Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega among others. I saw a lot of posts today celebrating Reading At Home and what everyone was reading, wether it be alone, with others, reading to people and so on.

For this day I’ve been reading the very much awaited Star Wars Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray. Anything that was Obi–Wan in it is an immediate must. I just started but there are a few things that made me head-tilt. I’m not that well versed in Star Wars lore, but I found some details didn’t really fit with what I already knew. Again, I just started so I don’t know where it’s all headed. But things like Obi-Wan loving to fly… wasn’t the whole joke in the prequels that he hated flying and Anakin loved making fun of him for it? That’s just one thing amongst a few others. It might seem small and dumb, but it’s the little things that matter. Anyone with better knowledge than me please let me know! 🙂

Anyway, how are YOU spending today? Is it with a book, a manga, an anime, a film? What medium is your favorite to be told a story from? Let me know!

HELLO AND… NEW BLOG!

Hello everyone! Wow it’s been a loooong time since I write anything. Frankly, my mind went: no more books. Honestly, I have been unable to grab any books to read. And I have a ton. I have read a load of fanfics though, so there’s that.

Anyway, I wanted to invite you or let others know about this new blog I am writing. I will be writing not only about books, but anime, manga, films, series and so on. This blog will continue but based solely on books. If you’re interested in any of the other topics, please take a look. There are only like four posts at the moment, but I will try to make the best of this quarantine and write as often as I can. Thank you for your support!

[Price Alert] Bloodline by Claudia Gray

Hello my fellow readers!

To any Star War fans out there like me, this book is currently being sold at 1.99 on Amazon for Kindle. I love physical books, but where I live they are really hard to get. I can always order them, but honestly, the shipping cost is insane. And most of the time the books arrive in a less than perfect state. Using my Kindle and these awesome prices I get to read loads of books and if I really really liked one, I can then buy it in its physical form (if I find it).

Anyway, this book is set after the Battle of Endor. Leia Organa has to navigate through the perils the new peace is bringing with it. Now that the Empire has fallen, chaos reigns and she must be able to overcome many difficulties. To top it all off, being the daughter of Darth Vader is not helping.

I haven’t read this book yet, but now I have a chance to buy it. All I have to do now I find the time to read it TT

[Book Review] Salt to the Sea

0saltTitle: Salt to the Sea

Author: Ruta Sepetys

Published Date: February 2016

Genre: Novel, Historical Fiction

Page Number: 391

Personal Review:

69bc1-52bstar

Coincidentally, today is the anniversary of the sinking of the German refugee ship, the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945 by a Russian submarine.

I find the quote “easy reading is damn hard writing” to be true with this book. Ruta took the time to interview, visit and research everything related to this event, which is also important to her because of how her family was affected by it. At the end of the book, she acknowledges all the people she talked to: survivors, historians, divers, and more. She also mentions all the books that helped her piece together what happened. Yet, when you read it, the words flow easily and it doesn’t take much for her to get her point across.

The story of the Wilhelm Gustoff is told from the points of view of four people: a young man, a nurse, a 15-year-old girl and a German soldier. Each of them has a secret of their own, each giving the reader a look into the events leading up to the sinking of this ship.

[Books] 12 Books I want to Read in 2019

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Hope you all had fun!

We all know the tradition of eating 12 grapes before midnight on the 31st of December, which symbolizes 12 months of good luck. Well, I don’t have grapes, but I do have books. Lots of books. Unfortunately, I can’t really read one for each second of the coming year (boy would I love to have that superpower).

There is also the tradition of starting the year with resolutions. Well, one of my resolutions this year is to manage to read at least half the books on my bookshelves. I have tons of unread books, so I decided to start the year writing about 12 books I have that I am desperate to read, but for whatever reason… I haven’t.

The following list contains books in Spanish and English, from classics to history. So, without further ado and in no particular order:

[Book Review] The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding

51rtRPsbWNL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_Title: The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding

Author: Alexandra Bracken

Year Published: 2017

Page Number: 362

Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal

Editor: Disney-Hyperion

Personal Review:

3-out-of-5-stars-png-2

PLOT:

Prosperity is part of the famous and influential Redding family. He doesn’t feel like he fits in nor does he particularly like his family-outside of his immediate family-and just wished he were someone else. As if he wasn’t already different enough, it turns out that thanks to a deal his great-great-great-great-great (I don’t know how many greats-), grandfather made a deal with a fiend, and for reasons, now Prosper’s got a demon living inside of him. Now Prosper must find how the hell to get him out.

THOUGHTS (the good and the bad):

I have to admit that the beginning was pretty interesting. I like the way Alexandra Bracken manages to lure the reader into the story. She drops hints and details that later come together to form a great scene.

I love the idea of having someone speaking to you in your head. In this case, we see a demon-here called a malefactor-from the 1600’s who speaks and sees the world as if he were still living in that time. It makes for some funny moments.

Plot:

Like any intelligent human being, they decide to bring them to Earth. On reentry, one of the lifeforms escapes. Fast forward to a few months later and Eddie gets infected with one of these lifeforms who calls himself Venom.

Review

Following my vow to never watch a trailer again, I went into this film having no idea what it was about. I know who Venom is but I never really knew him. Only that he’s a villain in the Spiderman comics and that he’s a parasite. Nothing else.

I know there have been many bad reviews of the film, but I really enjoyed it. I Continue reading “[Film Review] Venom”

[FanVid] Clone Wars

Okay, so we all know that moment we exploded from happiness when we realized that the Clone Wars was continuing.  A friend sent me the link through WhatsApp of all things simply saying: watch it.

I did and was impressed with the ‘editing’-I thought this was something fanmade-until those words: A war left unfinished… until now. I freaked and jumped and screamed and everything possible to express my happiness. Anyway, since then I’ve just been slowly re-watching the series, reading fics, looking at fanart and listening to the music (by the way, does anyone know where I can get the series soundtrack??)

Today I found this vid on youtube and I absolutely LOVE IT! I had to share it.

Rex is one of my favourite clones, though Cody is my top fav. This video is so heartbreaking. I feel like it encompasses everything that Rex and the rest of the clones are and so much more. A shout out to R1GHTEOUS who made this vid.

Are you a fan of the Clone Wars? What do you think of this vid?

[LIFE UPDATE]

Hey everyone!

I know I’ve completely disappeared from this blog and even from my YouTube channel. The thing is that the moment I made the decision to return to writing and making videos, they gave me full time at work. Which is great. I’m really thankful that I have a stable job, even if it can be really stressful (teaching can suck the life out of you).

Just when I was starting to manage my new schedule, I got invited to do a course to improve my teaching skills. Basically, it’s a lot of methodology, analysis and putting all that you learn into practice in your classes (which are observed O.O). It’s really draining because we have many assignments and tasks at the same time that we are working. It also takes a lot of time to go to the classes and return. Last month the classes were every day, but these next two months only three times a week, and the last three months only two times a week (which sounds awesome but I’m scared that, that ‘free time’ will be spent researching and trying not to cry).

[BOOK REVIEW] Corazonadas – Benito Taibo

corazonadasTitle: Corazonadas
Author:
Benito Taibo
Year Published: 2016
Page Number: 160
Genre: Children, Novel
Personal Review:

5-star_rating

Benito Taibo is a Mexican author known for being fun, passionate and a promoter of reading.

I hadn’t heard of him before, mostly because I’ve always paid more attention to English authors (even though I’m from South America). I decided to change that, getting more into Hispanic Authors and literature. I started with Benito Taibo because he was one of the invited authors to this year’s book fair in Lima, Peru. Booktubers from Lima started promoting him and his books. Three in particular were going to be presented at the fair, and a fourth in collaboration with two other authors (that last one was so popular it sold out, much to my disappointment).

But anyway, I picked up this one Corazonadas and Cómplices. Both are aimed more at young audiences. They both have a small page count and interesting topics.

Corazonadas basically means hunches or feelings. At first it’s not very clear to what ‘hunch’ the book is referring to, but I think it might have been a character’s hunch about something… spoilery that I won’t talk about. You’ll have to read it and share your thoughts on the matter with me later. ; )

THE PLOT

It starts with our protagonist Sebastián, who, searching for something in the attic of his old home finds a box with the name of his uncle on it: Paco. Opening it, he finds notebooks of all shapes and sizes and one simple instruction: Viernes: Haz con ellos lo que quieras. – Friday: Do with them what you want.

From there, we read entries of this one notebook with the title Corazonadas. It’s the moving thoughts and observations Paco has since his nephew came to live with him after his parents died in a tragic accident. Each chapter is a story, and the best part is that Paco is an avid reader, and not really knowing how to raise a child or what to do and what to say, gives Sebastián books that would answer his queries or help him. In one of the first chapters for example, he asks Paco: What is love? Because there was a girl he liked at school, so Paco gave him Pablo Neruda’s 20 Love Poems and a Song of Despair to try and answer such a big question as that. And so on. There are many literary references. Paco calls himself Robinson for Robison Crusoe and so he calls Sebastián Viernes (Friday) in honor of Robinson’s friend. From there we see references for Don Quixote, Frankenstine, The Lady of the Camellias, Love in Times of Cholera and so forth.

It’s a lovely book and I had a lot of fun reading it. I thought it was an easy read and perfect for anyone learning Spanish. The references also keep you on your toes and has you thinking about what other stories could have been used to answer one of Sebastián’s questions.

Have you read this book? Any Mexican author that has taken you by surprise? Please share your thoughts. ^^

[BOOKS] 10 Books I Love

20247989_10155508889279328_4473824578585971690_o

Hello! Today I wanted to share with you 10 of my favorite books of all times. A bit of backstory for this post. A month back I won one of those Facebook raffles, where the winner would get a book given by a book blogger called Libros de Pastel (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban-which is my fav), and a handcrafts page called Clover, who would give away a hand painted and framed picture of the winner’s 10 favorite books. I was really excited to have won, but the choice of my top 10 was a really difficult one, so I tried to choose from different genres. Here they are from top to bottom:

  1. The Dante Club – Matthew Pearl (Crime and Mystery, 424 pages)

If you’ve read the Divine Comedy and loved it, this book is for you. Our story takes place on the streets of nineteenth-century Boston and we follow a group of scholars who are reading, translating and discussing Dante Alighieri’s work. It’s interesting to note that Matthew Pearl used real historic figures, such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J. T. Fields, and Longfellow did get help from the Dante Club in finishing the translation of the Divine Comedy from Italian to English.

All around the city there’s been a series of grisly murders and they soon come to realize that they resemble the punishments sinners receive in death in the first book of the Divine Comedy: Inferno. At this time, the Divine Comedy was not known and so, afraid that they would be the prime suspects due to their intimate knowledge of the books or that it would poison the public’s perception of the poet, the scholars decide against going to the police. They are determined to catch the murderer themselves. The book reads like a Victorian Era detective story and it’s really great.

2. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief – Rick Riordan (Young Adult, Mythology – 377 pages)
