The Way I Write

“I’ve always written by hand. Mostly with a fountain pen, but sometimes with a pencil – especially for corrections. If I could write directly on a typewriter or a computer, I would do it. But keyboards have always intimidated me. I’ve never been able to think clearly with my fingers in that position. A pen is a much more primitive instrument. You feel that the words are coming out of your body and then you dig the words into the page. Writing has always had that tactile quality for me. It’s a physical experience.”

I so connect with this quote! I always want to write by hand. Somehow, my heart and mind feel more connected when holding a pen. It’s a whole-body experience, I guess. There is just a certain flow to my stream of thought and feelings.

My disability affects the movements of my arms, wrists, and fingers. This can make writing with pen and paper more work than using a computer. I have always tried to start by writing with a pen-in-hand. It may not be much, but the first words from my thoughts connect my heart to my hand. After I’ve written a couple of paragraphs, I usually transfer my writing by reading into a dictation program on my computer. It is an easy way to start writing with the assistance of the computer.

I don’t write with a pen as much as I used to. Over time, my body has changed, and reaching out for a pen and paper is more challenging than it used to be. All of us go through life experiencing changes in our ability to do things. Some of these changes can happen faster and more frequently for people with disabilities. We continually work to be creative and adapt.

It’s easy to resist adapting! Because it’s harder for me to write how I ‘used to’- I have found it challenging to focus on writing. Ideas are always flowing, but sometimes it is difficult to get started.

When I don’t write, I can feel congested. There are too many words, thoughts, and insights! I can’t keep all of that in my head and don’t want to.

So it’s all about taking time each day! The more I use the tools that make my life accessible, like Voice-to-Text, the more natural writing on the computer can feel.

Here’s to feeling grateful for options that help shape and reshape… the way I write.

Officially summer…

Maybe what we can do when we feel overwhelmed is to start small. Start with what we have loved as kids and see where that leads us.

I know it’s not official by the date! June 20 will mark the summer solstice…, but my ‘official’ summer date always comes earlier.

My summer begins on the day when twilight welcomes the first flash of a firefly’s golden light. Sitting in my backyard, enjoying the air’s transition from afternoon heat to evening cool, I see a flicker of light out of the corner of my eye. In an instant, a small light blinks across the yard. An answer of sorts – a visual conversation, beautiful and rhythmic.

These tiny creatures, hidden from view, light a way as they search for each other. This has always brought out the child in me. Filled with wonder and drawn to the mystical, I would sit in the backyards of our Southern homes, stretching my eyes to see. To see how far away I could find the small lights as they blinked – on and off.

Small and simple – to watch fireflies dancing in the night. One thought at a time, clearing the chatter that can bring anxiety, easily leaving one overwhelmed.

One thought at a time,  just like the flash of the firefly.

Monday Morning

Good morning, friends…

Time flows in the same way for all human beings; every human being flows through time in a different way.

Holiday – Ascension

Today is Ascension Day, the 40th day after Christ’s resurrection. For many of the churches that follow the Anabaptist traditions, especially the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, Ascension Day is a holiday.

Families gather to reflect, visit, share, relax, and enjoy each other’s company. Youngsters may go fishing, hiking, biking, or playing games like volleyball and softball.

Of all the holidays that the Amish celebrate, Ascension Day is the most informal. There is no worship service or fasting. It simply honors and remembers the day that Christ ascended into heaven.

Couldn’t we all use a day like that to relax, refresh, and renew our body, mind, and spirit?

Keep watch…

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Sacred Space

The sacred… is all around us, and small human rituals can connect us to its presence.

By the light of the moon… (late post)

David Kanigan

Many paths lead from the foot of the mountain, but at the peak we all gaze at the single bright moon.

The Moon will make a unique appearance today. For the first time in seven years, we will experience a solar eclipse.

Throughout the centuries, such an eclipse has been interpreted as many things….a message from the gods, a foreboding of bad things to come or an amazing moment, calling all to rejoin nature where we began.

It is a communal experience. One that covers the entire world. And as the time begins to create a sense of dusk, some will hear the sound of crickets and see the glow of street lights coming on, set to burn bright when the sun is going down.

For many in this country and across the world, there will be a pause in the day.A time set aside, not by clocks or schedules, not by anything we control – a time that will call for our attention.

Cautioned not to look at this event- it will be experienced through all our senses. The temperature will change and nature’s evening sounds will suddenly come to life.

Not influenced or created by humans… this will be a shared moment. One moon in a sky over all of us. We will be given a chance to experience something greater than ourselves- together.

In peace- let it be.
