Have you ever wondered why unrighteous and immoral people seem to prosper while those who serve God suffer? That’s not to say suffering is only for those who know the Lord, but still, as Children of God, shouldn’t we be better off than those who don’t know Him and even insult and blaspheme Him?

Have you ever been camping? When I was a kid, my family went to Deepcreek Lake in Maryland every weekend during the summer. We always camped in a tent until I was in my late teens, when my Dad bought a trailer. When I left home, however, I continued to go hiking and camping. Usually, I had a sleeping bag and a pup tent. Nothing too elaborate or heavy since I had to carry them. My earliest sleeping bags were basic, so they didn’t have a pillow. Instead, I used a shirt or something, but one thing I never used was a stone.

One of the most narratively shocking moments in Scripture is not found in the details of Jesus’ crucifixion, but in God’s command to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. While we cannot deny our Lord’s suffering and, more importantly, why He had to suffer and die, this test stands as one of the most horrifying incidents in the Bible.

Have you ever considered why God tests us? What’s the point of a test? When I was in school, we had to pass tests to prove that we understood the materials. If you want to drive, you have to take a test to demonstrate your knowledge about the rules of the road. You are required to demonstrate those rules in action by applying them while driving—at least, when you first get your license.

In fact, I can’t think of any tests I’ve ever taken that weren’t designed to prove my knowledge about the subject. If you have a driver’s license, you know that not everyone who has passed the written test knows how to drive well. Conversely, those who drive well might not have scored as well on the written test.

We might even say that the only test that matters is the practical exam, which reveals our skill. Of course, without knowing the rules of the road, how safe would it be if there were no written exam?
