going placidly on a word crush wednesday

167467-R1-06-18A

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,

even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Max Ehrmann

This verse from the epic poem Desiderata has been an inspiration for me as I go about my daily work life. I work outside among the most noisy, busy street selling fresh produce. I talk to many people throughout the day – all sorts of people –  young, old, rich poor, bitter, kind – I see them all. These verses I keep in my mind reminding myself to be patient and kind to all. I know I will always be happier when I behave in this manner.

Symbol for the Sea and Sand

P1010238

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Symbol.”

This photo not only represents the sea and sand, it has the American flag. This was taken in Ft. Myers, Florida at the sand sculpting competition. Competitors from all over the word had their nation’s flag flying above their sculpting stations. It was a memorable event.

a timely word crush wednesday

This quote is and has been my actual philosophy for my entire life. I have always felt life is fleeting and time is something we never get back. I will admit I get impatient when people keep me waiting. I’m bitter towards some who have unnecessarily done this to me.

Killing time has never been anything I’ve been comfortable with because life is just entirely too short to wait around for something to happen.

We never repent of having eaten too little.

Thomas Jefferson

This is exactly how I’ve got to starting thinking AGAIN!!!!

I thought it was appropriate to quote one of our nation’s founding fathers this week with the fourth of July weekend approaching. Over indulging this weekend does not make a celebration. Having fun does not mean consuming too much food or alcohol. What’s fun is feeling good and having a sound mind.

Changing Attitude

images-1

A very long time ago and I was ever so young I looked forward to Saturday night TV. At precisely nine o’clock The Mary Tyler Moore show would come on, one of my favorites. An episode that laid an impression on me still to this day was about Mary being in a depressed funk. What!? Mary sad?. Just shows it can happen to anyone.

Mary being Mary was trying to deal with it but she wasn’t having much success. She realized she needed a change. She came into the newsroom with blonde hair. All her coworkers were saying how nice it looked with not so much sincerity. To everyone’s relief she took the wig off.

After her uncovering, this is when Ted Baxter gave old Mar some advice. He asked in the most glum way if she was tired of waking up and having breakfast, coming to work, going home, watching a little TV and then going to bed. She then acknowledged that perhaps this was the case, he explained with all the gusto, enthusiasm, hand gestures anyone could muster – here’s what you gotta do – you got to get up, have breakfast, come to work, go home, have dinner, watch a little TV and then go to bed.

Of course the whole inflection in his voice said it all and Mary agreed with Ted. That was the other surprise – Ted giving valuable advice. Mary became aware she needed to change her attitude. And of course the episode ends happily with Mary moving when she realizes she’s been unhappy living in her apartment building since Rhoda and Phyllis were no longer living there. (Reality: they got their own TV  shows)

The point is she’s no longer depressed because she had something new happening in her life. She had something to look forward to. We all need a change. We all need to move on. Changing a negative attitude to a positive one certainly is going help.

That Mary – she’s gonna make it after all. Gotta love her.

sobering word crush wednesday

When was the last time you woke up and wished you’d had just one more drink the night before?

I have never regretted not drinking. Say this to yourself, and you’ll get through anything.”
― Meredith BellSeven Days Sober: A Guide to Discovering What You Really Think About Your Drinking

Incredibly true!  I think I shall remind myself of this more often – perhaps on a daily basis. Sobriety is can be a wonderful experience – particularly in the morning.

I had total abstinence for months. I did not go off on any benders or regret any of the beer I decided to have, I am just feeling it’s not worth the bother anymore.

happy word crush wednesday

audreyhepburn413489

I do think Audrey has this one right. To be happy has got the greatest gift of all. Unfortunately, I am entrapped with an extremely unhappy person who truly believes it’s selfish and morally wrong to seek out activities that one enjoys or even experience happiness. It’s no fun to be stuck with him – but I seek and enjoy happiness wherever and whenever I can find it.
