EXTINCTION OF SPECIES - NEW STUDY

Here's something you would not expect to read in an article in the proceedings of the Royal Society:

Extinction rates have increased over the last five centuries, but generally declined in the last 100 years. 

Finally, we examined extinction rates in the last approximately 100 years (1900s−2010s; figure 2b). No groups showed a significant, positive relationship between rates and decades (electronic supplementary material, table S6), as predicted if extinction rates were accelerating towards the present. Many groups showed a non-significant, negative relationship, including all species combined, animals, tetrapods, birds and mammals. These negative relationships were significant in arthropods (r² = 0.58; p = 0.0038; n = 12) and plants (r² = 0.44; p = 0.0196; n = 12). Overall, these results do not suggest that documented extinctions have been accelerating in recent decades, but instead have declined in the largest group of animals and in plants.

This does not appear to confirm that there is an extinction crisis.

THE CLIMATE DEBATE HAS REACHED A TIPPING POINT

Nearly 100 UK newspaper editorials voiced opposition to climate action in 2025 – more than double the number of editorials that backed climate action.

Over the past year, the Conservative party has rejected both the “net-zero by 2050” target that it legislated for in 2019 and the underpinning Climate Change Act that it had a major role in creating. Meanwhile, the Reform UK party has been rising in the polls, while pledging to “ditch net-zero”. 

It is worth noting that the Conservative Party only won the 2019 election with such a good majority because the Brexit Party (now the Reform Party) stood their candidates down. Had they stood, that election would probably have been much closer.

THE UN CLIMATE CHANGE TREATY HAS RUN ITS COURSE AND WESTERN NATIONS SHOULD ALL LEAVE

 President Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was long overdue.

Signed by President George Bush and ratified by a unanimous Senate in October 1992, the treaty’s purpose is to avoid “dangerous human interference with the climate system” by restricting greenhouse gas emissions, most of which derive from energy.

SOLAR PANELS TO BE COMPULSORY ON ALL NEW UK HOMES

The Energy Secretary on Wednesday launched a £15 billion green energy plan to fit solar panels, heat pumps, insulation and double glazing to five million homes for people on low incomes – all at taxpayers’ expense.

Housebuilders will also be blocked from installing boilers and gas fires in new homes under building regulations to be announced later this year. This will increase the cost of new homes along with the new building safety levy which is a tax to cover the cost of removing inflammable cladding from blocks of flats. Expect more tax increases to cover this latest policy.

HYDROGEN BUSES, BUT NO HYDROGEN

A fleet of 20 hydrogen-fuelled buses - half of which have never been used - will be converted to battery power after the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) said there was not enough hydrogen to run them.

CLIMATE MODELS V OBSERVATIONS

Climate models suggest that the strongest warming response the climate system has to increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (mainly CO2 from fossil fuel burning) is in the tropical upper troposphere. This produces the model-anticipated “tropical hotspot".  The tropical upper troposphere has the largest temperature response in climate models (up to 0.5 deg. C per decade).

The first study from GreenDrill—a project co-led by the University at Buffalo to collect rocks and sediment buried beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet—has found that the Prudhoe Dome ice cap was completely gone approximately 7,000 years ago, much more recently than previously known, says Phys.org.  When sediment is buried, electrons can become trapped inside its tiny mineral grains due to natural radiation and remain there until the sediment is exposed to light again, at which point they produce a measurable glow.

 Geo-engineering involves some way of blocking out some sunlight from reaching the Earth's surface to cool it. The problem is that the nations of the world might not agree whether they want it cooled, or by how much. And how can the people carrying out the research know how effective (or not) their methods will be. People are, rightly, worried about these experiments. 

Natural changes can be harmful, but there is little we can do about nature. Instead we have to adapt as best we can. If you read the article linked you can see there are businesses hoping that other companies will pay them to offset their CO2 emissions. The whole climate obsession is leading to a labyrinth of obscure ways to "cure" global warming.

 "The big problem was that these facilities were subject to large and dangerous fires on a regular basis. In some cases the same facility would catch fire multiple times. THE RENEWABLES TRAP

Below is a link to a most interesting article by Andrew Montford. He claims that we are so far into the use of renewables that the high cost of electricity is already "baked in" and the only way out is to abandon them altogether, which he admits is such a drastic option that it looks impossible, as there are so many contracts and treaties that we are signed up to. It looks like we have at least 10 to 20 years of high cost electricity and who knows beyond that? What is more we will continue to be uncompetitive compared to places that have not gone down this road such as India, China, the USA and many others.

 Here is a classic example of how to manufacture a large increase in surface temperatures, which is completely independent from any increase in CO2 levels. Thanks to Ray Sanders' meticulous work we can see exactly how the figures are manipulated by the development of a site causing a clear increase in the Urban Heat Island Effect, for which the Met Office have not taken into account. This gives a whole new meaning to 'cooking the books'.

AIR FRYERS - WHAT A GOOD IDEA!

 Air fryers what a great invention. It's a wonder they haven't been banned like the dear old hot filament light bulb.(mind you I still have a stock of them). Here's my tip for some festive cheer. When you next cook a jacket potato, after it has cooked scoop out the potato and having scraped all the potato out, return the jacket to the air fryer and cook it for a further 2 or 3 minutes until it is a crispy golden brown. You won't save the planet, but they do taste delicious and so crispy.

With all the doom and gloom on the main media, here's a good news story to spread during this festive season. The US Climate Reference Network (USCRN) record from 2005 shows no obvious warming over the past 20 years.

The data comes from the U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) which is a properly sited (away from human influences and infrastructure) and state-of-the-art weather network consisting of 114 stations in the USA.

These station locations were chosen to avoid warm biases from Urban Heat Islands (UHI) effects as well as microsite effects as documented in the 2022 report Corrupted Climate Stations: The Official U.S. Surface Temperature Record Remains Fatally Flawed. Unfortunately, NOAA never reports this data in their monthly or yearly “state of the climate report.” And, mainstream media either is entirely unaware of the existence of this data set or has chosen not to report on this U.S. temperature record.

HOTTEST YEAR EVER - BUT DID ANYONE NOTICE?

 Apparently the Met Office are claiming that this year will be the hottest year ever recorded in the UK, but only by 2 hundredths of a degree Celsius. How they can claim this with a straight face is difficult to believe, considering that many of their weather stations are only fit to measure temperatures to within as much as 5 degrees C. They refuse to admit that this is the case, but the evidence is overwhelming, as readers can see for themselves here: climate science: MET OFFICE CAUGHT OUT AGAIN!

MET OFFICE CAUGHT OUT AGAIN!

 No matter how many times the Met Office get caught out misleading the public or not maintaining their Weather Reporting Stations properly, it seems that the Government are ready to defend them. The reason why, of course, is because the Government is supposed to be overseeing what they are doing and so they (just as in the Post Office scandal) would also be implicated in the fall-out. A second reason is that all Government Ministers are signed up to the climate emergency scenario and so back anything that furthers their cause.

When I wrote to the Minister in charge of the Met Office (see here: Vallance’s Vanishing Act: Official Response to Stationgate | Tallbloke's Talkshop) The Minister merely denied there was any problem and claimed they did a first class job. Now in his latest survey Ray Sanders has found very poor practice yet again. This time in the maintenance of the immediate surroundings of a station. It is both sad and rather pathetic that such simple errors are found in so many of these measuring stations. You can understand why they are so desparate to deny there is any problem, as doing so would open up a Pandora's box of questions about the reliability of the Met Office's complete set of temperature records, and that must be avoided at all costs.

LIB DEM MP WRITES WORD SALAD IN "HOUSE" MAGAZINE ON "CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH"

Through a close association with an MP I often get to look at The House Magazine which is specially written by and for MPs. There are often some interesting articles in it, but I have noticed a very strong bias towards the so-called climate emergency. There is no climate scepticism that I have seen.

The most recent edition (15th December) has a piece by a Lib Dem MP, Danny Chambers, which is a master-class in vague sweeping statements which mean practically nothing. Unfortunately I cannot provide a link as it is only available to prescribers. I will produce one paragraph to give you a flavour:

"Universal health coverage isn't a distant goal - it's a lifeline. And right now it needs defending. The UK can choose to retreat, or it can help build a world where climate shocks don't become health emergencies, and where health emergencies don't become preventable deaths, by backing fairer funding and the frontline expertise that makes health systems work."

Of course back in the real world universal health coverage doesn't exist. How does he think "climate shocks" (extreme weather to you and me) will not lead to emergencies (including deaths). What does he mean by "fairer financing"? And how does he hope to achieve it? The whole article reveals someone who lives in a parallel world. There are far too many idealists in parliament. Instead we need practical people who give us down to earth solutions to the everyday problems which affect the daily lives of our own people.

As the Telegraph article points out, billions of central govt funding will be funneled to local councils, so they can dig up streets to pipe hot water into blocks of flats in cities across the UK

The Telegraph go on to list numerous examples of Soviet failures in their local heat systems. But most worrying of all is the imposition of state control of people’s home heating systems.

Given the horrifying inefficiency of local government, costs will undoubtedly rocket. And homeowners will have no alternative but to pay the bill, as they will be invoiced on a fixed annual basis, whether they use the heating or not. It sounds like a recipe for high costs, waste and inefficiency.

Far from acknowledging any shortcomings by the Met Office, Lord Vallance has issued a stout defence of everything the Met Office has done. This is not a surprise to me as I would not expect him to accept any criticism of his own people, but in doing so he is endorsing some very poor practice. 

What is needed is a truly independent examination into what is going on at the Met Office, but how can this be done?

How are businesses to make any long term plans when the major political parties are all making different pledges on whether to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 or not? When governments interfere with what can and cannot be sold the economy is bound to be badly affected.

The next election is likely to be in 2029, so we are left in limbo. Manufacturers can only guess. Will we all be forced to have heat pumps? No one knows!

PAST GLOBAL WARMING MORE RAPID THAN TODAY'S

There are numerous examples of rapid climate change in the historical record, some as recently as the last ice age. One of the best documented is a period of climate upheaval known as the Younger Dryas, which occurred approximately 12,900 to 11,700 years ago and temporarily reversed the earth’s recovery from frigid glacial conditions.

PROF. DIETER HELM: THE NET ZERO LIE

Prof. Helm believes that global warming is a serious threat caused by CO2, but he does not think that the governments of Europe have tackled the problem (as he sees it) in the right way. It is interesting to hear his points in the linked interview. He basically thinks that decarbonising will be costly and political leaders should admit this instead of pretending that it can be done for nothing and things will actually be cheaper. I think he is right in that analysis, but this means it will not happen as people are not prepared to make the sacrifice to achieve this, plus many nations do not have political leaders who are willing to put such policies in place. 

Prof. Helm is convinced that global warming will be dangerous, as he believes that CO2 levels are increasing at a historically fast rate, but this is contentious as we have no data for increases in the past. Also the data shows that, despite what the media proclaims, the climate is actually only changing very slowly. It is extreme weather which is the problem and the data shows no trend.

Here is another good article from Clintel. The climate policies proposed and being followed by some nations is quite remarkable. This article covers a lot of issues, but the one that caught my eye was what is happening in Germany.

 Germany wants to be climate-neutral by 2045 – a self-destructive plan: Germany’s reduction will inevitably be offset by rising emissions in other EU countries. This is because European emissions trading ensures that emission rights that are not used in Germany are used up in other EU countries. 

With its Climate Protection Act, Germany has imposed restrictions on itself that will have a highly painful impact in the coming years. The German Climate Protection Act, cemented by the Federal Constitutional Court, seems like a recipe for economic disaster. It allows Germany only a residual budget of 6.7 gigatons of CO2 from 2020, which is likely to be used up by the early 2030s. According to the law, penalties, shutdowns, and restrictions on freedom will then be imposed in order to meet climate targets. It does not sound like much fun!

JAMES HANSEN WAS RIGHT

James Hansen one of the key architects of the idea that the world faced a "climate emergency" has been proved right, not about the "emergency", but about his assertion that the industrial nations would not give up the use of fossil fuels. As the article states, the most sensible and much more economical policy would be to adapt to extreme weather events, which have always happened and no doubt always will. We have already spent enough money on the net zero policies with very little to show for it. Instead we could have protected our coastline against severe storms and put in better protection to prevent rivers from flooding our homes.

Recently a court cleared climate change protestors of causing criminal damage to Stone Henge when they threw coloured powder at the stones. The judge was very keen to direct the jury to consider the right to protest and appeared to make light of the damage which had to be cleaned off. This result will give the green light to other protestors to take similar action. This weak judgement does nothing to help protect society from these hooligans. Very bad news.

Well now I have, let me give you some facts.Nearly 900 companies – including several large international corporations – have withdrawn from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This initiative requires members to set scientifically validated climate targets in order to align their emissions goals with international standards. However, more and more companies are questioning the feasibility of these requirements. The withdrawal affects approximately seven percent of all participating companies. (So you can see that this was a big burden on businesses)

The extra costs incurred in complying were bound to lead to higher prices for consumers. However once people start leaving and returning to competing on price it is the firms left in this project that will be left struggling. It is the return to a free market economy.

PRICES DRIVEN UP BY "VOLUNTARY" ESG RULES

 ESG is the “environmental, social, and governance” criteria that Greens devised as a tool to coerce compliance.

The strategy is clever and relentless. ESG advocates form “voluntary” industry groups that lock in their radical priorities from the start. Then, they lean on major corporations to join these pacts — or else face coordinated boycotts and damaging PR campaigns. Take the U.S. Plastics Pact, for instance: Greens would argue that it encourages the reduction of waste and increases recycling etc. whereas others will argue that it’s a targeted assault on the plastics, food, and petroleum sectors, with an explicit mission to trigger a “profound paradigm shift” and drive “systemic change” in how these industries operate. 

Whatever side you are on there is no doubt that it results in increased costs for the consumer and when taken to the extreme it limits choice and drives out competition.

James Uthmeier, has written to environmental groups demanding to know how their use of the Pact to fuel their activism does not violate antitrust laws. Next time we see on the news that we are about to reach a climate "tipping point" we should look back a few years to see what previous scientists have got wrong. One of the classics is this one about an ice-free Arctic in summer. Al Gore was very keen to promote this idea, but he does not seem so scary today when it can be seen just how wrong he (and the scientists who informed him) was.
