Visakhapatanam, May 24, 2025: A common trick played by miscreants is to seek help on the pretext of loss of belongings in the train while travelling. Generally, priests are the gullible preys to such schemes.

Two weeks ago, I was the soft target of such a clandestine begging, at least, I thought so. When I reached back my room after celebrating Mass in the morning, there was a stranger at my door. He greeted me politely. With tears in the eyes and chocking words, he began to tell me that he was penniless, as he lost all his belongings in the train. He said that he was travelling from Chennai to Shalimar.

The ticket examiner sent him mercilessly out of the train in Visakhapatnam. Though none was willing to believe his story, someone directed him to the church which was close by and that is how he landed in front of my room that day morning, hoping that the church would extend some help.

I listened to his story with suspicion and skepticism, as seeking help under the pretext of losing luggage was a common story. To my surprise, he did not request for any cash but asked for my mobile to make a call to his brother in Shalimar. I grew more suspicious as there are umpteen stories of cheating with mobile phones. And yet, somehow somewhere in mind, there was a feeble voice telling me that the case is genuine. Saying a small prayer in mind, I gave the mobile to him, and he spoke with his brother and explained his pathetic condition and requested him to send cash to my account by phonePe, and gave my mobile number. Within minutes, an amount of ₹ one thousand was credited to my account. Immediately, I showed the receipt on my phone. His joy knew no bounds. He did not know how to thank me. I gave him the cash and he went away with tears in his eyes but a heart full of happiness and gratitude.

I became very pensive: had I refused to listen to him, what would have been his condition? Yes, there are some cheats and scoundrels in the world, but am I right in painting everybody with the same brush?

Embracing the Unscripted Moments: A Family’s Journey to Finding Joy

Photo is used only as representational illustration.
By Sister Avila, SJA
Srikakulam, 24 May 2025: In the quiet village of Kodosi, nestled in the Srikakulam district, Rajesh and Meena lived with their young son, Vijay. Rajesh, a meticulous planner, structured his days to the minute—breakfast at 7:00 AM, work at 9:00 AM, lunch at 1:00 PM, and home by 6:30 PM. He believed that control ensured peace. His wife Meena, in contrast, embodied spontaneity—gentle, flexible, and ever ready to embrace the unexpected. Their son Vijay was an intriguing blend of both—curious and unpredictable.

One Sunday morning, Rajesh planned a flawless family picnic by the lakeside. The itinerary was precise: leave home at 8:00 AM, reach by 9:00 AM, play until 11:00 AM, enjoy lunch at noon, and return home by 2:00 PM. However, from the very start, the day veered off course. Vijay spilled juice on his shirt, Meena forgot the picnic blanket, and an unexpected traffic jam delayed them further. As Rajesh grew tense, checking the time and sighing in frustration, Meena gently reassured him, “We can still enjoy the moment. Let’s learn to flow with it.”

Upon finally arriving at (name of the lake), Vijay ran towards the water, laughing as the breeze tousled his hair. He picked up a fallen leaf and placed it in the stream, watching it drift effortlessly with the current. “Look, Papa! It’s dancing!” he exclaimed in delight.

Rajesh paused, observing the leaf’s movement—no resistance, no frustration, just grace and calm. Sitting beside Meena, he smiled for the first time that day. The family abandoned their structured plan, instead laughing, playing, and sharing jokes. What could have been a day of frustration became one of their most cherished memories.

A Lesson in Life’s Flow

The family’s experience serves as a gentle reminder: life doesn’t always adhere to carefully laid plans. Yet, when we learn to flow like a river, embracing the unexpected, we discover beauty in the unforeseen. True peace lies not in rigid control but in surrendering to the moment with love.

Justice with Compassion: The Pratyasha Team’s Mission for Women’s Empowerment

By Sr. Angel Mary, SAL
Visakhapatnam, May 24, 2025: “Legal aid is not just assistance; it is a promise that no woman will stand alone in her fight.”
“Hope is not just a feeling—it’s an action. Every woman who stands up for justice strengthens the world.”
A group of courageous women are advocating for justice, particularly for Self Help Group members facing legal and social challenges. Every Saturday, they provide free legal aid, helping women handle issues like domestic violence, property disputes, and workplace harassment. More than just legal assistants, they have become symbols of hope.
In Arilova, Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh, the Sisters of St. Ann Luzern have been quietly leading a movement for women’s rights, empowering marginalized women—especially the poor and illiterate. Their efforts took a major step forward in 2011 when they collaborated with the District Court of Visakhapatnam to train fifty women in para-legal skills, equipping them with knowledge and confidence to navigate the legal system.
From this initiative, the Pratyasha Team emerged—One such story is that of Sailaja, a devout young woman from a Catholic family in Andhra Pradesh. Despite financial hardship and the burden of caring for ailing parents, she persevered, earned an M.Pharm degree, and secured a job in Hyderabad. However, following her engagement, the groom’s family began delaying the wedding, leaving Sailaja’s family desperate for help.
The Pratyasha Team, led by Sr. Angel, stepped in, advocating tirelessly for months. Their efforts ensured the dowry was returned and Sailaja’s dignity was restored. Soon after, she met and married a man who values and respects her. Now, she leads a happy, fulfilled life.
What began as a small training effort has grown into a grassroots movement for legal empowerment. Through compassion and persistence, the Sisters of St. Ann and the Pratyasha Team continue to bring justice to marginalized women, ensuring they have both a voice and a path to equality

Defying Tradition: Maria Goretti’s Daring Journey from Protestant Roots to Catholic Sisterhood

By Sr. Shara SAL
Visakhapatanam, May 24, 2025: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.” – Ambrose RedMon

Born into a devout Protestant family in a small village near Rajahmundry, Maria Goretti’s life seemed destined to follow a traditional path. But a single moment of curiosity at St. Ann’s High School in Bheemunipatnam changed everything. One day, as she glanced into the convent chapel during Eucharistic Adoration, a profound calling stirred within her—a notion nearly unthinkable for a Protestant girl. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

As she grew older, Maria’s family arranged her marriage, adhering to their deep-rooted traditions. But her heart longed for a different journey—a life devoted to God as a Catholic nun. When she expressed her desire to join the convent, her family reacted with firm opposition, seeing it as a betrayal of their faith. Yet, instead of wavering, Maria stood resolute, embodying the biblical verse: “Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” – Isaiah 43:1

Determined to pursue her calling despite resistance, Maria took an extraordinary step. Disguised in her brother’s old clothes, she fled home, embarking on a challenging journey to Bheemunipatnam, where she sought refuge and education. Her unwavering courage reflected the wisdom of Ambrose RedMon: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”

Moved by her bravery, the sisters at the convent welcomed Maria, recognizing her genuine calling. With their support, she began her formation and ultimately became a cherished member of the Congregation. Her journey echoed the timeless saying: “The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.”

Sister Maria Goretti became renowned not only for her deep spiritual wisdom but also for the remarkable courage she displayed in answering God’s call. Her extraordinary life remains a source of inspiration, proving that faith thrives in the face of the impossible. As she exemplified through her actions, “Follow your calling, no matter how impossible it may seem, for the impossible is where faith thrives.”

By Sr Jyothisha SGN
Elluru, May 24, 2025: In the small village of Kothapalli near Nuzvid, 14-year-old Varshitha has emerged as a symbol of determination and hope. A tenth-grade student from a financially challenged family, her journey reflects the power of resilience and education.

Born to a daily wage laborer and a homemaker, Varshitha’s life has always been filled with challenges. Despite their modest means, her parents recognized her deep love for learning and enrolled her in an English-medium school—an ambitious decision given their income.

“She never let go of her books, even when we had nothing,” says her mother.

But the road wasn’t easy. The constant worry about unpaid school fees weighed heavily on Varshitha. While her father did everything possible to support her, the pressure was immense. Still, she kept her fears to herself, focusing on her studies with quiet strength.

With renewed focus, Varshitha gave her best—and the results spoke for themselves. She passed with distinction, making her family and teachers immensely proud.

By Sr. Dr. Amitha Polimetla SDS
Visakhapatanam, May 24, 2025: The Nee Thodu Society, a non-governmental organization based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has been at the forefront of empowering the transgender community under the leadership of its founder and director, Sr. Dr. Amitha Polimetla SDS, a member of the Salvatorian Sisters congregation. In a significant step towards this mission, the society recently inaugurated a Sustainable Livelihood Center for Transgenders at Marikavalasa, Madhurawada. This center aims to provide vocational training and employment opportunities, enabling transgender individuals to lead dignified lives and integrate into mainstream society.

Sr. Dr. Amitha Polimetla’s dedication to the transgender community is deeply rooted in her academic and humanitarian pursuits. Her doctoral research at Andhra University focused on the socio-economic challenges faced by transgender individuals in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The study revealed that a vast majority of the transgender population is compelled to engage in begging, sex work, or traditional performances due to societal stigma and lack of formal employment opportunities. Alarmingly, only 6% of the respondents held formal or informal jobs, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive employment avenues.

Beyond academic research, Sr. Dr. Amitha’s compassionate engagement with the transgender community has been transformative. Her initial interactions, marked by empathy and a genuine desire to understand their struggles, led to the establishment of the Nee Thodu Society. The organization not only offers vocational training but also assists transgender individuals in obtaining essential identity documents like Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and voter IDs, facilitating their access to government welfare schemes.

The Sustainable Livelihood Center stands as a testament to Sr. Dr. Amitha’s unwavering commitment to social justice and inclusivity. By addressing the root causes of marginalization and providing tangible solutions, the center aims to empower transgender individuals, fostering a society where they are recognized, respected, and given equal opportunities to thrive.

Transforming Lives: St.Ann’s School lights Up Kadireppally’s Future

By Sr Lissy Mathew, SAL
Kadirepally, Andhra Pradesh, May 24, 2025: “In the heart of every girl lies the power to redefine her village’s future, and education is the key that unlocks it.”This powerful conviction has driven a quiet revolution in Kdirapalli.
“Jesus Said (Mt: 5-14), ‘You are the light of the world and salt of the earth; let your light shine before people.'” Inspired by this divine message, St. Ann’s Girls High School in Kadirepally, Madakasira, Andhra Pradesh, has become a beacon of hope, breaking the chains of gender-based educational barriers and transforming lives.
Undeterred by skepticism and resistance, the Sisters embarked on a transformative journey, going door to door to persuade families to invest in their daughters’ futures. Their relentless efforts slowly eroded deep-rooted traditional biases, fostering a quiet revolution in Kadirepally.
One inspiring example is Nagamma, a graduate from the school’s second batch in 1997. At a time when rural society discouraged girls from pursuing education, she defied expectations and excelled academically. Her journey continued beyond the classroom—after marrying a businessman and moving to Bangalore, she established a thriving factory. Today, her enterprise provides employment opportunities to many from her village, proving how education can empower individuals and elevate entire communities.
Beyond Nagamma’s success, St. Ann’s School has catalysed countless stories of transformation. Young girls who once faced bleak prospects now pursue higher education and careers across India and beyond. The village, once confined by limitations, now radiates pride as its daughters reach new heights.
In 1993, a small village in Andhra Pradesh stood in the shadow of underdevelopment, where educating girls was considered an afterthought. Basic necessities like food, clothing, and healthcare were scarce, and opportunities for young girls to attend school were nearly non-existent. Against these odds, the Sisters of St. Ann Luzern, led by mission pioneer Fr. Amal Raj, SJ stepped in with unwavering determination to uplift the community.
Fuelled by the motto “For Jesus, For His Love,” the Sisters’ tireless efforts have reshaped not just individual destinies but the soul of kadirepally. Their mission is a testament to the enduring power of education, compassion, and perseverance in creating lasting change. As the village continues to raise, St. Ann’s Girls High School remains a shining symbol of hope, proving that the pursuit of knowledge.
