4.read over line one: why is losing an art?And why is does Bishop echo the pharsing of the first lines later in the poem? Does the author’s respective use of it have any implication or intent?
I think that almost all the people don’t like the feeling of losing thing. Sometimes you will feel heart-broken when you loss a thing or a person. Sometimes you will feel happy when a bad people died. So, losing can be an art. In my opinion, I think that Bishop echo the pharsing of the first lines later in the poem is because he wanted to emphasize it. Also, he said that he didn’t care of losing things on the poem. However, in fact, he was really care about it. What he said in the poem is differ from what he really think about in his mind.
5. Can we tell what kind of loss Bishop is exploring? If we can, where in the poem does the loss become clear?
You can take a look at the last paragraph in the poem. “even losing you (the joking voice,a gesture I love) I shan’t have lied.” I think Bishop is exploring to a loss of losing a friend or a lover.

Essay Question: The poem was read by Frankie to Maggie as she lay on bed. What is the theme of the poem and why did Frankie chose the poem to read? What is the significance of the poem to him and Maggie? Do you notice any transformation or change of the relationship between Frankie and Maggie? What is it? And what might contribute to the change?

The theme of the poem is “Cheer Up”. Maggie lost her two legs after the serious hurt on boxing in the peak of her occupation. Maggie would somewhat felt a little sad. So, Frankie read the poem to her in order to cheer her up. Also, he wanted to tell her that she will be recover some day. “Look on the bright side!!!”
The relationship between Maggie and Frankie had changed. At first, they are just student and coach. However, they became as daughter and father at the end. I think that is because the were faced with a lot of difficulties together and solved them together. That’s why their relationship were getting closer and closer.

1. What do you see in the picture? Where is Icarus? What are the other figures in the picture? Why does the painter try to convey through the arrangement of the figures in the painting?
I see Icarus on the left corner of the picture. Everybody in the picture are doing their own work, such as talking to others or walking on the road. No one really noticed that Icarus was falling down. I think the painter want to tell us that although we are sad or blue , the world won’t stop just simply because of you. It will still goes on. In my opinion, I think the painter also want to tell that people in this century are weak of sympathy.
4. What is the speaker’s tone? What is message that the speaker try to convey?
The speaker’s tone is a little negative. He think that although Icarus was falling down(something very amazing!), no one noticed that. The world will keep going on. No one will stop their work becuase of you.

1. What is the form of this piece of the writing? Fiction, prose, or poetry? Is the narrator the author?
The form of this writing is prose. And the author is also the narrator in this writing.
5.Any inspirations you get from reading the story?
I think that many cultures have their differents life. We all have to learn to respect them. In this writng, aurthor had a Chinses mother. His mother couldn’t speak fluent English. And author cared about it very much. But later she realized that communicating can be just a simple sentences or words. That’s a very important point. If you really want to understand or communicate with a person, you seldom care about wherther he/she can speak well or not. Listen carefully and focus on what they said! You may find that it is easy to have a good communication.

1. Werther says “ That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people, and I myself am constantly haunted by it” at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us, we people everywhere? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]

In my opinion, I think Werther is trying to tell us that everybody in the world wants to prolong their miserable existence just because their own satisfaction. But we all have our limitation! We can’t do things perfectly every time. For Werther, I think, he may have recognized this point. So, he didn’t follow the way that everybody did. He had his own world in his heart. Insides his heart, everything swims before his senses. And that didn’t have limitation. He can enjoy himself in his own world.

2.How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like chidren?

(1) Werther thinks of children as the happiest people in the world and nearer his heart than anything else on earth.
(2) Because children do not know the reason of their desires, all the learned teachers and instructors agree. All of their behaviors are simply nutural and innocent. Also, chidren didn’t have to worry about the pressure come from society. They just do what they want and ignore the things they don’t like. In other words, “Children” are the beginning parts of human-beings.

3.What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the young Werther you learn from the letter on May 22?

I think Werther is a person who is difference from others person and has his own new thought of life.
He wants his life to become natural and true. (just like children.) Because he didn’t want to prolong his satisfaction just because of desires. Besides, I also think he is a sensitive person. He can discover the difference side of others people. That’s why “Werther” becomes so special among us.

1. In Canto V of Inferno, those who are indulged in lust are sent to the second circle of hell, including Semiramis, Dido, Cleoparta, Helen , Achilles, Paris, Tristan, Francesca and Paolo. Choose One of the sinners lost in lust. Explain why Dante puts him/her into hell.

Those overcome by lust are punished in second circle. So, the people in the guestion are all overcome by their lust when they were alive.
Take “Paris” for example, he loved Helen(Menelaus’s wife) very much. And he wanted to take Helen back to his hometown, “Troy”. So, the famous war , “Trojan War” started because of his lust. I think that’s why Dante put him into hell.

2.Why is Dante moved to tears after Francesca’s description of love and why does he finally fall “as a dead body falls” after her personal account of her intimate relationship with Paolo?

I think for Dante , the relationship between Francesca and Paolo is unacceptable.
So, when Dante knew that he felt like a dead body falls.

3.From Dante’s presentation of Francesc and Paolo, we are encouraged to consider the place of moral responsibility in depictions of love, sex, and violence in our own day. We can certainly discuss music, television, movies, and advertising (as well as literature) in these terms. Who is more(or less) responsible and therefore accountablefor unacceptable attitudes and behavior in society: the creators and vehicles of such messages or the concumers and audiences?

I think both of them have their own fault.
Because Francesca already got married with her husband but she still loved another man.
I think if you have already got married , you shouldn’t think about or fall in love with another man. Even your husband’s brother.
Paolo is fault, too. Because he already knew Francesca was his brother’s wife. He should avoid falling love with Francesca.
But I think if Francesca and Paolo are in modern society now, audiences will forgive them.
Because in modern society, everybody have new viewpoint for seeing this matter.
