1.9 – Fresh Air, Fresh Start

Life was good.  Every morning when I woke up and looked at myself in the mirror, with Ollie and McLellan sleeping lazily in the background, I smiled (I did that a lot lately) and thought about how lucky I was to have such a wonderful family.

Ollie was moving right along with his job.  He had been promoted numerous times and was now the head chef’s right hand man at the bistro.  It made me happy to see him doing so well in his career.  I wished I could say the same for myself…

After McLellan was born, I’d continued to work at the office, but now that I was pregnant again (yes, you heard right, I’m pregnant!) I decided that I really didn’t want to work under Mr. Fudge’s constant criticism any longer.  One day I had told him that I was done with the mess he called a job, and left the office.  I made a promise to myself that I would never set foot into that building again.

With another little one on the way, and McLellan getting bigger right before our eyes, Ollie and I decided that it was time for a home makeover.  We sat down to discuss the matter one day after breakfast.  We wanted to start from scratch and really focus on the needs of our family, while still keeping within the budget.  We weren’t exactly rich, with only Ollie working and all…

But we managed to pull it off!  The instant I saw the house I immediately fell in love with it.  It was small and a bit crowded, but still big enough to accompany our growing family.

The decorators (yes, we hired decorators.  I wasn’t very talented in the whole picking out furniture department) even stuck with a constant theme throughout the house—my favorite colors!  Orange, red, and pink!

As much as I wanted to just hang out in my beautiful house all day, Ollie and I knew it would be good for the baby and for me to go outside and get some fresh air and exercise.  McLellan loved going to the park day and night just like I did, so we made constant trips downtown to catch bugs and fish, some of Ollie’s and my favorite childhood activities.

Let’s just say interior decorating wasn’t the only skill I was lacking…

But I was able to catch a dragonfly one day, which made McLellan laugh uncontrollably for about five minutes straight!

Back at home, Ollie had recently brought home an old coffee-maker from work.  He told me all about some new high-tech Coffee 3000, something or other that they had just gotten.

I told myself again and again that I would not try it out.  I knew what happened to people who drank coffee, and I did not want to get addicted to the thing!

One day though, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to try just a little glass.

I must say, it was delish!  But ever since that first cup, I haven’t been able to stop.  I just knew that would happen…  Whenever I left the house (we’d been going to the park more and more as of late) you could be sure I’d have my coffee-filled thermos in hand.

One night, on one of our adventures in the park, right as we were leaving I felt a sharp pain in my stomach and instantly knew what was happening.  The baby was coming and we were here with no car!

The world started spinning all around me.

What were we going to do?  Once again, I was freaking out, wondering how in Berry’s name we were going to get to the hospital in time with no car.  Why had we made the long walk to the park instead of driving?  What was going to happen?  Where would we go?  The pain was almost too much to bear!

I was so overwhelmed that when Ollie managed to start walking me towards down the street I almost collapsed into his arms.

Somehow I was able to get all the way to the hospital, and after a hard delivery I cried when I finally saw the gorgeous little girls.  Yes, I said girls!  We had twins!  (Luckily one of our close friends had an extra crib we could borrow!)  I laughed at the thought of McLellan dealing with the new arrivals.  I could only imagine what he would think of his new little sisters…

Mandarin…

And Tangerine!

I only hoped Ollie wouldn’t go crazy…

1.8 – I Just Don’t Want to Let You Go

The big day was finally here!  After lots and lots of planning, (and changing plans—the church was no longer available for the wedding so we made a reservation at a different venue instead) we were finally ready to tie the knot!

“Clem, honey, you look so beautiful!”  My mom couldn’t stop gushing over my dress, my hair, my makeup…

“And this little ring bearer looks extremely handsome,” she said as she picked up McClellan and tickled him.

Ollie and I had decided to wait until McLellan was a little bit older to get married.  We figured he would enjoy it more.  I guess we were right; he was getting attention from everyone and he loved every minute of it!  I swear, that kid never stopped laughing!

It was almost time for the ceremony to start and I was getting more excited by the second.  I always thought I would be a bit nervous on my wedding day, but I was too happy to feel nervous.  I was ready for this!

“It’s time!”  My mom seemed even more eager than I was, and that had to have been pretty hard to do.

I took a deep breath and walked outside.  Everything was stunning!  I saw all of the guests, McLellan walking down the aisle with the ring, (I prayed that he wouldn’t drop it!) I saw my parents sitting in the front, looking like it was the best day of their life, and I saw Ollie, the love of my life, waiting for me.  It all took my breath away.

I started walking and everyone turned around to watch me.  If they wanted a blushing bride then they definitely got one!

When I reached Ollie at the altar, McLellan yelled, “Momma here!”

I heard my mom quickly shush him, but not before everyone got in a good laugh.  Hey, why not have some fun, right?  I didn’t have a problem with that!

As the wedding went on, I felt like I was only going through the motions, not really thinking about what I was doing.  I kept on getting lost in those eyes…

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Ollie slid the ring on my finger and I did the same for him.  When it was time for him to kiss the bride everyone started clapping and cheering.  It was the happiest moment of my life.

After taking countless pictures outside, the guests all shifted inside to begin the reception.  There was plenty to eat and everyone seemed to be having a great time.  I made my rounds, making sure to talk to everyone, and finally I was able to get back to Ollie and talk to him for a bit.

When mostly everyone had finished eating, the DJ started up the music.  Of course Ollie and I got the first dance…

But once the song was over and a pop song started playing, everyone joined us on the dance floor.  It was so funny to see some of my friends going crazy to the music.  Even Mr. Fudge (who I felt obligated to invite) was busting some awesome dance moves.

It didn’t surprise me that as the night went on McLellan was constantly surrounded by girls.  My friends said he was the cutest thing (which he was,) and told me that they knew he would be a ladies’ man when he grew up.  I shook my head, but I knew that that would probably happen.  How could you turn down that cute little face after all?

We danced and danced, but eventually it got so late that we had to call it a night.  McLellan had fallen asleep in his daddy’s arms and people were starting to make their way home.

It had been a great night though, and as I hugged my parents, my dad said, “Ollie is a great man, Clem.  He is perfect for you, and I want you to know that I approve.”

“Well dad, I think it would’ve been a little late for you to disapprove,” I laughed.

“I guess that’s right…”

“Dad, are you all right?”

He was crying.  “You’re my little girl Clementine and you always will be… I just don’t want to let you go,” he sniffed.

“Oh dad,” I said as I took him up into another huge hug.  “I love you daddy.”

“Love you too Clem,” he said and went to join my mom.

As the last few guests left, I went over and sat next to Ollie and our sleeping little baby (he was growing so fast though it was hard to call him a baby these days.)  I hoped that McLellan would have a wedding this beautiful, with a girl that he fell in love with.  I was still keen on keeping my promise; I wanted everyone to have a life this great…

1.7 – A Promise to Keep

Time was flying, and I was actually kind of sad to see it passing so fast. I really was enjoying my pregnancy.  Aside from the huge stomach that is…

I had plenty of time to find new things for the baby—a crib, some toys…  It all made me even more excited to be welcoming a new member to the family.

One of the best parts was that I was on maternity leave from my job, so I didn’t have to deal with Mr. Fudge’s anger issues anymore. I had actually told Ollie that I wanted to quit my job after the baby was born so I could dedicate my time to taking care of her (or him. Ollie was constantly calling the baby a boy, but I insisted that it would be a girl.)

Another plus of the whole pregnancy thing was that Ollie was doing just about everything around the house.

 He cleaned…

He cooked…

Ollie’s cooking was about five times better than mine anyway. He had gotten promoted and was now learning all he needed to know about being a top chef. It’s a good thing too, because I’d been craving some pretty crazy foods lately. Ollie always managed to pull it off and keep me happy though, whether he was making me food or giving me a much-needed massage. And trust me; he gained a lot of experience in the massage category.

It seemed like Ollie was working more and more, but I think it really just felt that way to me because I was home alone so often. At least I had plenty of childcare books to read, and I had even found a cute little TV show that was constantly talking about ways to “keep your baby happy!” So I had some ways to occupy my time, but it was never the same without Ollie there.

One night, after a dinner of leftover pancakes and soup (my latest cravings,) Ollie and I were watching a rerun of the “keeping your baby happy” show. I hadn’t been feeling well all day, and I had been making constant trips to the bathroom, so when I felt weird this time I didn’t think much of it.  When I got up to go to the bathroom though, something felt a little off, and then the pain and panic hit. The baby was coming!

I was freaking out, but somehow Ollie managed to stay reasonable and got me into the car and to the hospital.

I guess I don’t really have anything to compare to, but I thought the birth went pretty smoothly. I was relieved when it was finally over and I could hold the little angel in my arms though.  He was so cute!  I knew that he would look just like his father…

I couldn’t wait to see what kind of life this little boy would lead. I knew one thing for sure though; I wanted to provide all of my future children and grandchildren whatever they needed to have a life and family as happy as mine was. That was a promise that I would keep.

1.6 – Surprise!

“Clementine, I want you to go to the doctor, just to get checked out.  You don’t want to end up being sick for the wedding do you?”

Ollie had been insisting that I got to the hospital all day.  I swear, I throw up one time yesterday and he won’t let it go.  At least he cares in the first place.

“No, I would rather not be puking my guts out on my wedding day, but trust me Ollie, I’m fine!  In fact, I’m better than fine, I—“

Oh no, maybe Ollie was right.  I made a run for the bathroom and got there just in time.

He watched me from the door.  When I was finished, he took my hand and led me to the car.  “We’re going.  Just for a checkup.  Don’t worry Clementine, you will be fine.”

We got to the hospital Ollie checked me in and we got in right away.  We sat in the room for what seemed like a very long time, and when the doctor let us go I was speechless.  We got outside and I just stood there staring at Ollie.  “Ollie, I’m… I’m… Pregnant?!”

“Are you alright hon?”

“I think so… I just can’t believe it.”

“So what are we going to do about the wedding,” Ollie asked with a concerned look on his face.  The wedding.  It hadn’t even crossed my mind until now.

“I guess we’re going to have to put it off until this little bundle of joy decides to make its entrance into the world,” I laughed and rubbed my stomach.

Before we went home Ollie said he wanted to stop by the book store.  He let me stay in the car, reassuring me that he would be back in just a few minutes.  I leaned my head back, closed my eyes, and listened to the music playing, but before the song was even over Ollie was back in the car and we were heading home.

“What did you buy,” I asked as I looked through the shopping bag full of books.

“Oh, just some books for us to read before the baby comes.  They’re full of a bunch of stuff you should know when you are a parent-to-be.  I figured we could spend some time reading them together…”

“Aw, that’s so sweet. Thank you!”

“It’s the least I can do Clementine,” Ollie replied as he stopped the car.

I got out and right when I shut the car door I felt something weird.  Then it happened again.  It was the baby—it was kicking!

“Ollie!  Come here!  The baby’s talking to us,” I said.  Once again I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face.  Ollie put his hand gently on my stomach and eventually felt a kick.

Then he bent down and whispered to our little darling, “I can’t wait until I can see your beautiful face, little one.  I hope you get your mom’s good looks.”

All I could do was laugh.

Ollie leaned in close again and listened to my stomach for a moment.

“Clementine, this little baby says that he loves you very very much, and is so glad you are its mommy.”

I almost cried.  Happy tears of course…

1.5 – Making Plans

The next day, we got right to work planning the wedding.  We didn’t want to wait any longer than we needed to.  Ollie and I sat down at the table discussed where we should have the wedding and reception and we quickly agreed on a nice little church in town.

We decided to have a big wedding party with all of our friends instead of a small wedding.  I loved dancing and parties, and Ollie was prepared to go along with anything I wanted.  He was so sweet…

The thing I was most excited for was picking out my wedding dress.  I was trying to contain my anticipation so we could get through the rest of the plans, but Ollie noticed that I was a bit zoned out.

“What’s the matter Clementine?”

“Oh.  What?  Oh. I’m fine… I actually just really want to find a dress you know?  Every girl dreams about her wedding dress…”

“Well how about I finish up here and you go have a girls’ day out.  You can go shopping with your friends, find the perfect dress, the perfect shoes, and talk about how you want your hair to look…  It’s fine with me!”  I still couldn’t get over the fact that I was blessed with such a sweet, considerate soon-to-be husband.

“Are you sure?  I really don’t have to…” I didn’t want him to feel like he had to let me go.

“Of course!  I only want you to be happy!  Go ahead, call up your friends!”

“Thank you,” I said to Ollie and gave him a kiss.

I was just about to leave the house when panic struck me.  Was this too soon to be getting married? Were we too young?

I ran back into the house and into Ollie’s arms, the tears starting to fall.

“Clementine, what happened?”  He was truly worried about me.

“I don’t… I don’t know Ollie.  I love you so much but… But I just… Are we too young?  Are we deciding on all of this too soon?  I wish I could marry you right now… But… But… I’m scared.  I don’t know.”

“Clementine, look at me.  If you want to wait to get married that’s just fine.  I don’t want to rush into things if you don’t want to.  Like I said, I want you to be happy.”

I looked into his eyes and my fears melted away.  What was I doing, telling him I wanted to wait?  That was such a crazy thought!  I wanted to be married to him right now, but I really could wait a few months so we could have a proper wedding and party.

“Never mind!” I said and smiled.  “I want to marry you as soon as possible Ollie, I just don’t know what got into me… Weird mood swing I guess,” I laughed.

“Have fun with your friends,” Ollie laughed along with me.

I called up Bailey and Cindy, my two best friends, and they said that they would love to go shopping with me.  We agreed to meet at the park in fifteen minutes.  I left early so I could spend some time on the swings again.  I hadn’t gotten much of a chance to enjoy myself last time I was there, passing out and all…

Before I knew it, Cindy and Bailey arrived and we set off to find a dress.  We checked one store that specialized in dresses of all kinds—prom, wedding, and anything else you might need a dress for—but I didn’t see anything I was crazy about.  The time had gotten away from us and it was already noon when we left the store.  My stomach was growling so we made a stop at the diner for lunch.

“Oh I know where we can go!” Bailey exclaimed.  “There’s this cute little boutique a few blocks away, they had some really cute dresses last time I was there! Let’s go!”

“Fine with me,” I said and we walked down the street to “Magnifique,” the shop Bailey was talking about.

“Wow, they really do have some cute dresses here,” Cindy said as she looked through the racks of dresses.

Soon enough I found it.  The perfect dress.   I went to the dressing room to try it on and I absolutely loved it!  I didn’t want to show anyone quite yet though… I wanted everyone to be surprised at the wedding.  “This is it,” I squealed, and after getting all my measurement down and ordering the dress, we went to the jewelry store next door.

After finding a necklace to go with the dress, we realized how late it was.

“I’m getting pretty tired guys, want to call it a night?”  I really wanted to keep shopping, but I felt like I was about to pass out.  I didn’t need that to happen again…

“That’s fine Clementine!”

“Yeah, I had so much fun today!”

I was just a lucky person in general—a great fiancé, great friends…  “Thanks!  I’m so glad you came with me today,” I smiled.  We all hugged each other after making plans to go out again, and then we went our separate ways.

When I got home and saw Ollie sitting there I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face.  Today had been such a great day, and now I was super excited for the wedding!  It was going to be great…

1.4 – Passion

I felt like a teenager—so love struck, feeling like Ollie was the only thing that mattered in the world…  It was like high school all over again, only this time…It was real.

Ollie and I were so happy that we wanted to share it with the rest of the world.  We didn’t just stay cooped up inside his house day and night; we actually went out to eat, to the movies… As long as we were together we were happy.

But when we weren’t together (we still had to work,) I was miserable.  I was always counting down the minutes until I could be in Ollie’s arms again.

One night, when Ollie finished his shift, he came home and guided me out to his car.

“Where are we going tonight?  It’s already so late…” I protested.

“Sssh, you’ll see soon enough,” Ollie replied with a smile on his face.

We drove for what felt like forever, though it was really only a few minutes.  I hated when people kept secrets from me, so I was starting to get worked up.

“Ollie, where are we—“

“We’re here,” he said as he got out of the car and ran to the passenger door to open it up for me.

We were at the beach, and let me tell you, it was beautiful at night.  Well, when isn’t the beach beautiful, but being here with Ollie made it seem unreal.

I took his hand and we started walking down to the water’s edge.  But before we got there, Ollie stopped abruptly.  He just stared at me with a look that I hoped was passion, but I couldn’t really be sure in the dark of the night.

“Clementine, you are the most gorgeous girl I have ever met.  I never told you this, but I liked you even before I became your fake boyfriend,” he laughed.  I was silent.  It wasn’t like I would know the words to say anyway. Ollie was too perfect for words. “The time I’ve spent with you has been the happiest time of my life, and I never want it to end…” Ollie continued.

He got down on one knee.  I felt a single tear drop roll down my cheek.  I had been waiting for this moment my whole life.

“Clementine Custard, I love you with all of my heart.  Will you marry me?”  He pulled the prettiest ring I had ever seen out of his pocket and waited for my answer.

“YES!” I screamed and jumped into his arms.  The tears were pouring down by then, but they were the happiest tears I had cried in my entire life.

I looked at my engagement ring and was overwhelmed with happiness.  If only everyone could find someone as amazing as Ollie to love.

“Ollie, I love you so much,” I whispered.

“I love you more!”  He tickled me and ran down the beach.

I chased after him.  “Come back here!  I’ll catch you,” I yelled after him.  Now I felt like we really were teenagers, or kids even, just messing around.  But this was so much better…

When I finally caught up to Ollie, all I could do was kiss him.  This man was the love of my life, and now I would be with him forever.

Eventually we were able to control ourselves enough to get in the car to drive home.

When we got back to his house, Ollie carried me inside, and the best night of my life got even better.  And I didn’t even think that was possible…

1.3 – Falling for You

Things were different between Mr. Fudge and I after our little outing. I knew they would be, and I was glad I didn’t have to deal with the constant flirting anymore. After all, it wasn’t Mr. Fudge I liked… Ever since that sweet little kiss at the restaurant, Ollie was all I could think about.

I had yet to go a night without him being the subject of my dreams.

And every morning when my alarm clock brought me back to reality, I would look over at my nightstand, where the little piece of paper Ollie had slipped into my hand sat. All I had to do was dial those seven numbers into my phone to find out if he was feeling the way I was. But surely he wasn’t.

He was just being nice and going along with my little charade. He only wanted the money. But I always came back to the fact that he actually gave me his number. Sure, it could be fake…Or maybe he just wanted me to call him so we could meet up for me to pay him. That had to be it.

I went through boring days at work, looking at the clock every five minutes just to see how much longer I had until I was free. Until I could go call Ollie.  But when I got the chance, I never had the guts to make the call. Why was it so hard for me to call up some random guy I hardly even knew? I just couldn’t figure it out… I already had so much to think about.

Lately, Mr. Fudge had seemed to really enjoy calling me into his office and yelling at me. Sometimes for no reason at all. If I accidentally forgot to do something–no matter how minor it was–I would get chewed out.

It was not very fun, and definitely not what I expected when I applied for the job in the first place. Maybe I should’ve just let Mr. Fudge flirt with me… I cringed at that thought.

After a particularly rough day at work (the stapler broke and I was accused of breaking it, which lead to lots and lots of yelling,) I was ready to clear my head.  I stepped out of the office building and headed toward the park at the center of town. It had always been one of my favorite places.

Mmmm… The freshly mowed grass, the fish jumping around in the pond, and the swings blowing back and forth in the wind. The swings had always been my favorite, and that was the first place I headed.

As I pushed off of the ground, I instantly forgot about all of the anger and sadness and worry that I had been holding in for so long.

Back and forth, back and forth. I focused on the sound of the metal swing and nothing else. I was so deep in thought that when I heard someone clear their throughout behind me I nearly fell to the ground.

When I jumped off of the swing and turned around to see who it was standing behind me I thought it was too good to be true. I had to be dreaming. There he was, right next to me…

And then I stumbled and really did fall to the ground…

 *****

I woke up feeling disoriented.  I had no idea where I was or what I was doing in someone else’s bed.

But then I looked over and saw him.  Ollie.

It all came back to me in a flash.  I had seen Ollie in the park and I guess I had probably passed out.  He had brought me here, to his house, to make sure I was all right.  This was so perfect.  He was so perfect.

“You’re finally awake!  I’ll just go and give you some time to yourself…”

I interrupted him, “No!  Please no.  All I want is to spend time with you!” I couldn’t believe I had just said that.  This was the moment of truth.  Did he feel the same way about me?

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Ollie said as he laid down next to me and gave me a kiss.

How could a girl like me be lucky enough to find a guy like Ollie?  I guess I’d never know, but what I did know was that Ollie and I were meant for each other.  That was the only thing that went through my mind that whole night.  We were meant for each other.
