“Zip Code” Photo Project

We went on our field trip to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho and were asked to determine a theme for this little town in this zip code. “It should define what makes that area unique, be broad enough to encompass pictures from different places in the neighborhood, but narrow enough that you can come up with a headline that unifies the essay.”

My Headline would be:

“There are plenty of 1950’s motels to stay over in world famous Lava Hot Springs, Idaho.”

Journalistic/Environmental Portraits

Feature Photo Assignment

Growing up in Pocatello, I lived on the west side at the base of City Creek. The local hills were my backyard. My Brothers and I would spend hours on these stairs looking for arrow heads and lizards.

I decided to use this shot as my feature photo because of the sun shining down on the stairs.

Stairway to Heaven

Located on south Lincoln street in Pocatello, the “Stairway to Heaven” starts at street level and winds up the hillside to the top of city creek bench overlooking the city. Youngsters in the early 1900’s would hike the stairs to dance on Friday nights. A piano was hauled by wagon to the top of this steep hill every weekend in the summers.

Photo Media Photo Assignment #3: News/Event Photo

Our assignment this week was to photograph an actual breaking news story or a scheduled event (on or off campus). because of my schedule this week , I decided to try to get shots of the Simplot Games that were scheduled at ISU Holt arena Friday and Saturday in Pocatello I was crushed to find out that the games were long over by the time I arrived at 5:30 PM after work and even worse that my childhood hero Olympian Carl Lewis had made a surprise appearance earlier that day.

Lucky for me, I decided to go inside anyway to see if I could get a shot or two for my next feature photo assignment and found out that the ISU Track and Field Team had to wait to practice until the high school athletes had left the building. This was my chance!

I walked in just like I belonged there, camera around my neck and my throwback ISU hat on. I crossed over the indoor track and told the coach that I was there to “take a couple of shots” of the track team. He pulled up a chair and gave me the whole story behind most of the athletes and how they were ranked. I was able to get right next to the competitors as they gave it there all practicing after hours.

In closing, I was a bit nervous about approaching strangers to get photos but I found that they were more than willing to give me shots and even asked me how they should pose.

Note to self. Just dive in and get those shots.
