About the Group

The Devizes Writers’ Group is for people who enjoy writing and has been going since 1994. Some members have been published, some write just for their own amusement and pleasure. We count poets, storytellers, playwrights and biographers amongst our members.

The group has no chairperson, and precious few rules. New members are very welcome if we have capacity. Sometimes we have to stop adding to the membership, but this is simply because our meetings become unwieldy when there are too many people wanting to read out their work.Β  A some of our sections are now full.Β  We then run a waiting list.

We meet in the Bear for DWG1 in the evening, at members’ homes in the afternoon for DWG2, and back at the Bear for an evening session for a group called, imaginatively, DWG3. The Poetry Lot also meet at the Bear, at lunchtime.Β  Β See the Types of Events section for further information.

Our blog gives some idea of what we have been doing.

  1. Seems like a lovely (and successful) group you have!

Does the group welcome younger and less experienced writers? I’m 18 and love writing, but I’m dyslexic so I sometimes struggle to put my ideas together πŸ™‚

    1. We would love to see you! You may think we are older than dinosaurs, but we have all been 18 once. We don’t even see your work written down so would not have a clue about spelling being wonky. We are very happy to give help, and feedback, and ideas are much more important than perfection (and who does that, anyway?). If you would like to join us on the 25th drop us a line on [email protected].

  2. During lockdown I wrote an eight part sitcom to keep my mind occupied. I am now in the process of adapting the screenplay. I would love to have feedback on my work and advice on my writing and how best to format the screenplay. I am also a prolific reader and would welcome the chance to read your members work. I live in Chippenham so just a stones throw.

  3. It is with great sorrow that I found and read your posting on the passing of Brenda Williams in February. I met her a few years ago when my sister and I visited Brenda and Mike. I don’t have Mike’s email any longer, so could you pass on our condolences and sympathies to him. (Mike’s cousins Eunice and Muriel – my email is [email protected].)
