Greetings one and all. The year of the Fire Horse in Chinese Astrology is about bringing a dynamic, energetic, and action-oriented period for bold changes, self expression, and freedom, intensifying the horse’s natural drive. The poem I have always loved which expresses this is Ring Out Wild Bells (from In Memoriam) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson:
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
I remember those that here we see no more, specifically Kiki and Marmie. Kiki died a year ago today from cancer, having been misdiagnosed by the local vet, who said she had a cyst. Marmie died on 23 February after an operation to remove her mammary cancer, which she survived, only to be taken by a blood clot. We were with both ladies when they passed, and they knew they were loved.

In stitching news, I completed three pieces, which were:
Three Spirits from Scarlet Quince (now owned by Paine Free Crafts after Meredith retired). I loved the colours and the absolute joy of the fairies.

My travelling project was Pumpkin Kitty, a small piece from Chatelaine.de. I made a few changes, including stitching the pumpkins one over one to make them more delicate, and I changed the vine thread from the thick Caron Waterlilies Black Watch (the variegated grass in the bottom half of the photo) to a similar DMC thread in one colour. Kitty’s whiskers were also stitched in black, as black cats have black whiskers!

Lastly, Cardinal Christmas Ball by Alessandra Adelaide made an appearance as I was feeling in a festive mood. This was adapted from a paper pattern, and I also, yes you guessed it, made a few changes: I omitted the outlined hearts and stars and replaced some of them with solidly stitched ones. I also placed beads instead of stitches for the berries, and removed the upper ribbon so that the ball will be central when it is framed.

I can’t wait to see this on the wall with its companion piece, Cardinal Bell, which I finished in 2013.

For 2026, I started another Scarlet Quince (now Paine Free Crafts) piece by Molly Brett called Christmas Kissing Mice:

I have only done about 200 stitches on the left mouse.
The other project I want to start this year is an illustration by Sam Cannon, which she gave me permission to stitch. The pattern is huge, and I need a new tablet to stitch it. The finished piece will be nearly a square meter. I chose the greatest complexity as I wanted to capture the fine details and for the words to be legible. It will be worked on 22 ct hardanger with one thread over one:

With that, let’s raise a glass to 2026, and all its potential!
