The Manse: the residence of a clergyman. The Episcopalians call it The Rectory, the Methodists call it the Parsonage, but the old Scottish tradition is to call it The Manse.
So why do I call it the Manse? I’m not Presbyterian. Well, I grew up Presbyterian. My late father was a Presbyterian minister. I grew up in a wonderful 1912 manse in Key West, Florida. So this blog is called “The Manse” mostly out of nostalgia. Mostly. But there’s another reason as well. Nobody uses the word “manse” anymore. The term is fading into obscurity. All the more reason to use it. It’s a lovely word.
