A few of my current projects

As I mentioned in my last blog I’ve decided to take the plunge and embark on dress making – nothing like setting myself really hard goals hey?

Image

This is my first project, the day dress. The party is late September so I’m hoping it will still be warm enough for me to get away with making the short sleeved version….. the long sleeved one has difficult seams on the skirt.

And this is the second project, the evening gown. I’m really looking forward to making this.

I have plenty of lining fabric to make a mock up with. Even though I have never made a dress before I am well aware of the little fact that 1930’s women weren’t 5ft 8″ and even worse my size is no longer a decent 14 but a sad size 20! Oh the shame of it. But I have a nifty chart showing me where to alter lengths etc. Of course having the daughter of a tailor as one of my train buddies helps.

So – wish me luck and I’ll try and keep a log of how it goes… ( if you hear lots of screaming over the next few weeks you’ll know it’s me getting frustrated with the sleeves! ). I do have something nice to do once I’ve finished… I have 14m of some lovely duck egg jacquard curtain fabric to turn into 5 roman blinds for our bedroom… I wonder why playing with soft furnishings doesn’t worry me one bit but making a dress terrifies me?!

Wow that was a long break

Image

So since my last attempt at a journal we’ve had the honeymoon…. wonderful. I love Malta! I love the food!

Image

The people were friendly, the weather fantastic, the hotel was amazing – all in all a wonderful week away.

Since then I’ve been basically lazy. Well I say lazy I’ve been other wise engaged with lots of different plans.

First up is our wedding anniversary, which in true Brian style involves friends being invited to a Pirate Murder Mystery…. should be great fun and I’ve already started working on the menu for 22 people ( 4 vegetarian and 1 fussy ).

Next is a 1930’s Murder Mystery Weekend that we’re going to. Brian was quite easy to sort out as we have a very good vintage shop here in Bath. Me? That is a problem being of a certain weight and height that was almost unheard of in the 30’s…. So I’m venturing into the unknown realm of dress making. I sourced 2 original patterns and found some fabric and the dining room table is covered in all sorts. This is going to be interesting and if it works I’ll post the results…

Of course never happy with just three projects I decided I didn’t like the color of the curtains I made last year for our bedroom and found some lovely duck egg blue fabric that I am going to turn into Roman Blinds. That way we can open the blinds easier than struggling with the bay curtain pole… I suppose what I have to decide is do I make 1 big blind for the front of the bay and two small ones for the sides or do I make 2 for the front and 2 for the sides along with another for the odd window. But I have to make the dresses first.

Favours that should never be done

Favours that should never be done

I should have known, I should have realised…. why would my old college friend be ringing me up out of the blue? We did the same accountancy course so she knows everything I do so why would she be asking me to help?

My pride said yes before my brain even registered. Not thinking that she even went on to become CIMA registered not just AAT like me.

Oh what an idiot I was.

My terms? Just bring everything over, ensure it’s all in date order with a diary of where he were working, paperwork for the van, insurances etc…. self employed builder so quite a few things to offset….

What I got…. timesheets from 2009 to current date in no particular order, receipts for the same years also in no particular order, even down to the kitty litter……..but no insurance details, van paperwork…

6 hours later, I’ve worked out part of his tax return. I even did it on a little excel spreadsheet for him with monthly day books so next year he can do his own!

I now know why she didn’t want to do her husbands tax return… it would have caused world war three! It nearly did in my household!

To Slipper or not to Slipper

Image

Is it really inappropriate to wear slippers at my desk in my office?

This is forefront to my thoughts as I sit here with freezing cold toes, with socks hanging on the heater behind me drying and boots trying desperately to dry before I have to do the next ‘dog walk’.

Maybe I should keep spare socks and spare shoes in my desk? However today it’s cold, damp, miserable and a nice fluffy pair of slippers would make me so much more comfortable. I wonder …….

And relax

I can finally breathe.

The wedding has finally been and gone. Oddly even though we had a pretty poor summer the sun decided to shine on us that day – it was the hottest day of the year! Which was amazing considering it had been raining non stop the week building up to it. Three days before and our back garden was under three inches of rain!

This year has been a manic flurry of mad activities getting the house and garden ready for the wedding. Maybe I really was mad to think I could do it all in time, but I ( we ) managed it.

We dug, landscaped, seeded, re-seeded and re-seeded again. Planted flower beds front and back. I made curtains and roman blinds for many windows ( too many and if I never see my sewing machine for a year I won’t be disappointed! ). We painted walls, fixed plaster, hung shelves, racks etc.

I then cooked like a mad woman possessed…..

Just a bit of food…. enough to feed 50 people…..

Finally at about 1.30am we both fell into bed having finally finished clearing up as much as we could.

It was a fantastic day, Brian has made me a very happy woman, and I can hardly wait until we ( I ) get my well deserved honeymoon…… next year……

Lost In France – from the Underground

For those of my friends who have followed Lost in France ( and screamed at their screens when reading his blogs )….

I was rather worried when I found he’d dumped his blog so gave him a quick shout… turns out he left his phone at the house…. I’m surprised the whole country didn’t hear the screams of indignation when ‘ EX ‘ found he had a blog.

Anyway, he’s alive, he survived the mental abuse – just, and wants everyone to know how much he’s appreciated our support.

So Mark, we will miss you. Good luck and I’m sure I speak for us all when I say please try to carry on building a back bone and stay strong.

xx

Easter with a twist

I do hope everyone had wonderful Easter Vacations.

Mine was interesting to say the least, I promise not to post any photo’s but I suppose I feel the need to talk about it ( so sorry guys ).

Thursday was the big family get together to celebrate my father’s 70th Birthday, we were all staying a lovely mansion not to far from home. It was fantastic to have everyone in the same place.. even cousins and their children.. all in all a lovely day. Later in the evening we all gathered in the lounge and got nattering, the girls all ganging on me to help wedding plans etc, the men trying to bribe Brian into having a stag do.

Later as people drifted off to bed I was talking to one of my cousins about her recent traumatic times, we got deeping engrossed and it was quite an emotional time ( without going into too much detail she’s really punishing herself for recently loosing a pregnancy ). We finally realised time had run away and it was 2.30am.. way past our bedtimes.. so we said or goodnights she went to her room I surveyed the chaos that was left and ralised a mobile phone and jumper had been left so picked them up and went out for last fresh air etc….

As I was putting the phone in my handbag I stepped onto icey gravel and the next thing I knew I was doing a doggy paddle style trying to catch my footing across the frozen gravel until I ended up swan diving face first down the lovely stone steps that fronted the beautiful mansion. I came to about 20 minutes later in a mass of blood and struggled to my feet ( picking up the bloody phone along with various other items that had flown out of my bag ), I remember thinking I had to reach Brian so he could take me hospital and surprisingly made it through the house to our room without bleeding everywhere.

I was eventually allowed out of hospital Friday morning ( so not bad really ) I am now sporting some lovely looking blue stitches in my forehead and nose, they don’t quite go with the red / black / purple / yellow bruises that cover the rest of my face, neck, shoulders, arms, fingers and knees, but they are quite neat ( not as neat as I can sew but then I’ve never tried sewing living flesh! ).

I find out next week when I can have my nose rebuilt and hopefully if I can keep some of me teeth…. I’m hoping it will all be fix by the big wedding day.

So Easter, I managed to have 1 small piece of chocolate, other than that all food has had to look like baby food and administered with a teaspoon… I did have a few oh woe is me moments, but I’m trying hard to be happy.. In fact I can’t cry – my face feels like I’ve had a botox overdose!

Sewing practice

We have been having some very unseasonal hot weather these past few weeks – I’m not complaining it’s been lovely while it lasted. However Brian has been moaning, working from home, staring at a couple of computer screens with the beating sun in his face has been slightly uncomfortable. So I finally got round to a first time ever sewing project of making a Roman blind for his office.

Now I can sew, I’m not great at it but I can sew….. I am self taught, having been thrown out of home economics back in the days of school…. Amazing really considering my cooking skills now.

Anyway, all in all I think I did ok really, considering I’ve never made them before 🙂

Kindle Books I’ve read this year

A few of my blogging friends write about what book they’re reading at the moment so I thought I’d jump on the band wagon…

So far this year I have read:

  1. The Guardians: Book One of the Restoration Series – Christopher Williams
  2. Ossendar: Book Two of the Restoration Series
  3. Valley of the Ancients: Book Three of the Restoration Series
  4. Dragon Stones (Book one of the Dragon Stones Saga) – Kristian Alva
  5. Return of the Dragon Riders: Book Two of the Dragon Stone Saga
  6. BlackThorn (Chronicles of the Dark Sword) – DeWayne Kunkel
  7. Aethir (Chronicles of the Dark Sword)
  8. BlackThorn’s Doom (Chronicles of the Dark Sword)
  9. The Dragon-Child (Hyborean Dragons) – B.V. Larson
  10. Storm of Prophecy, Book I: Dark Awakening – Michael von Werner
  11. Storm of Prophecy, Book II: Pillar of Light
  12. Storm of Prophecy, Book III: Flames of Retribution, part 1
  13. Wasteland – Lynn Rush
  14. Century – Sarah Singleton
  15. The Diamond Throne: Book One of the Elenium – David & Leigh Eddings
  16. The Ruby Knight: Book Two of the Elenium
  17. The Sapphire Rose: Book Three of the Elenium
  18. Domes of Fire: Book One of the Tamuli
  19. The Shining Ones: Book Two of the Tamuli

Well I say I’ve read them all I’ve just started The Shining Ones.

Last year I read 72 books but I’m not going to bore you with listing all of them. I did look and I noticed I go through phases, mystery then murder then fantasy and so on… This year I seem to be in a fantasy mode.

1,2 & 3 – Christopher Williams

Thoroughly enjoyed the story line, the editor needs to be shot though which does ruin the whole reading process. I know that he’s mainly an author who releases Kindle books but surely if you’re going to bother releasing a book for people to buy you want to ensure words are spelt correctly and the grammar is correct.

4 & 5 – Kristian Alva

Again thoroughly enjoyed the story line, as suggested by other reviews it does start off very similar to Eragon but it does grow into more of a Tolkien style. Much better editing and both books together cost me just over £2!

6,7 & 8 – DeWayne Kunkel

Yet another good storyline but awful editing!

9 – B. V. Larson

Awful as it sounds I can’t remember much about this one… either I was reading it when I was in my brain dead, over worked state or it just wasn’t one that kept my attention… maybe when I’ve finished my David Eddings fetish I’ll give it another go.

10, 11 & 12 – Michael von Werner

Book 1 and 2 were brilliant, magic, zombies, monsters, dragons all in one book together, Book 3 went off in a dark tangent introducing a sexual element that really wasn’t needed. That said I am looking forward to the next one.

13 – Lynn Rush

This was one I jumped on having read a blog she did over on Victoria Writes page… I and do mean quite literally jumped on. I read the blog by the time I’d finished I’d already sent the book to my Kindle! I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a joy to read.

14 – Sarah Singleton

Sarah is the mother of my step children, she’s a very respected writer and I thought it was about time I read some of her stories. I must say I am glad I did! Really good book and I enjoyed it all the more because I could see who she’d used to inspire her characters….

15 – 19 – David & Leigh Eddings

Well, what can I say? Still a favourite of mine even though I first picked one up when I was a young 11 year old. Sadly even these have a few editing issues! But not enough to put me off, I’m just glad they’ve released them to Kindle. I loved the Belgariad series with Polgara and the rest, but when I was a hormonal pre-teen I would read of Sparhawk and dream of him coming to rescue me from my dull and dreary life.
