Mare Monstrum
This summer strain your ears while you bathe at sea. The Mediterranean has become a limbo of ghosts, fogged with the despair of the unlucky who didn’t make it to cross, and of those whom we sent back to the Lybian non-state to be disposed of.
Mare Monstrum is a series of images produced by feeding an open AI engine with various frames from horror movies, pictures of beaches and shipwrecks.
In July 2021 the deaths in the Mediterranean matched those of the entire 2019 and 2020 (missing migrants project), and those who are rendered by European Member States to the safe port of Lybia regularly undergo abuses and torture.
Italy has so far financed the torturers with EUR 785M (see Emergency) . To get an idea of what these migrants endure, you can read this article by Amnesty International and if you want to dig in, check their report Between Life and Death.
NFTs have been minted on OpenSea from this work.
100% of all revenues generated by these NFTs (minus gas and minting fees) will be donated to SeaWatch one of the NGOs that have been more active with sea rescues during the migration crisis.
