Six Sentence Sunday: A snippet from Most Eligible Bachelor

[Glossary: WIP – Work in Progress; SSS – Six Sentence Sunday]

Welcome to my first Six Sentence Sunday. The idea behind SSS is for an author to pick any 6 sentences from a work from any genre, whether WIP or published (you don’t have to be published to participate) and post them on their blog on Sunday before 9 AM EST (i.e. 2PM GMT). There are no restrictions on genre, heat level or publisher.

To celebrate the release of Most Eligible Bachelor on Friday (03-Feb), and hopefully to whet your appetite a little, I’m going to share six sentences from it. I chose my snippet from a scene leading up to the first kiss. I hope you enjoy the read.

***

She hesitated. Slow music meant being in his arms, their bodies touching. She shouldn’t do this. Yet for some ridiculous reason, she wanted – needed, even – the closeness, to feel like a woman again. Just for a moment. Even if she was certifiably insane for wanting all this in the arms of Lord McKenzie.

***

To find out what happened before and after this, drop by tomorrow.

Back to Six Sentence Sunday. There are literally hundreds of authors taking part it each week. If you’d like to take part in SSS or just want to read more snippets, go here. Thanks for stopping by!

Versatile Blogger Award!

I have been nominated by fellow Black Opal author, Liv Rancourt, for the Versatile Blogger Award! Considering that I had no clue what I was going to blog about when I set up this blog way back in 2009, I’m completely chuffed that people enjoy reading my blog enough to nominate me for an award. Thanks, Liv.

Before I launch into the Terms & Conditions of this nomination, let me just say a few words about Liv. She writes speculative fiction and romance. Her debut novel, A Vampire’s Deadly Delight, is for sale at Black Opal Books and other book retail websites. 3. In the same post, thank the blogger who nominated you in a post with a link back to their blog (check)
4. In the same post, share 7 completely random pieces of information about yourself (check)

Chancing Faith has a Release Date!

Good news! I have a  release date for Chancing Faith! 17th March, 2012.  It will come out in Print and eBook from Black Opal Books. Now you have two dates to mark on your calendar. Soooo exciting!

To whet your appetite, here’s the final approved blurb:

He didn’t do short-term relationships…

American ad exec, Thane Aleksander, doesn’t date co-workers either—until business takes him to Ghana, West Africa, and he meets Naaki. Now he’s at risk of breaking all the rules. Can he stop this headlong fall before it’s too late?

Until he met her!

Naaki Tabika has a burning need to prove, to herself and others, that she’s more than wife and mother material. To do so, she’s prepared to give up everything for her job. Meeting Thane, however, makes her want to get personal. But falling for her boss could destroy her career. Will she be willing to risk it all for the one thing that can make her truly happy?

Two divergent cultures, two different races, two career-driven professionals, only one chance at true love—will they find the faith to take it, or will their hearts be sacrificed on the altar of financial success?

Word Wednesday: Ought and Aught

Hi folks. I hit a snag on my original post and had to find a back-up. Of course, there’s no shortage of homonyms and homophones, so I got another set.

OUGHT /pronounced awt/, an auxiliary verb used to

1. express an emotional, practical, or other reason for doing something. “The State ought to repair the bridges” | Every citizenought to help.”
2. express probability or natural consequence. that ought to be enough”
| “That ought to be our train now”
3. express propriety, appropriateness, etc. “You ought to be home early” | “We ought to bring her some flowers”.

Pronoun
Anything whatever (I have no idea what this means. Sorry, people)

Adverb
(Archaic)  in any degree; at all; in any respect.

Synonyms: had better; should

***

AUGHT /pronounced awt/ a noun meaning 1. (archaic usage) No amount at all; something of no value or importance

Also functions as a pronoun meaning, 1. (archaic usage) anything whatever; any part: for aught I know |“Only a small proportion of their populations had aught to do with the road”

Have I confused you yet?

I’ve Got a Release Date!

Mark your calendars, folks. Most Eligible Bachelor has a release date! Friday, 3rd February.

That’s eleven days before Valentine’s Day – plenty of time to get your copy and cosy up on Val’s Day with my first Man of Distinction, Lord McKenzie.

Since Valentine’s Day is all about love and love is all about giving, I will be giving away free copies of my book in what I’m calling my100-Fan Book Give-Away (drumroll).  If you’ve already heard about it, read on, cos I just upped the ante.

Here’s how to be eligible:

When I reach my first 100 fans on each site, I will draw two names on that site to win a copy each of my book. That means, if you follow me on all three, you get three chances of winning. How cool is that! Of course, the catch is that I have to reach a hundred fans before I can draw a winner, so pass on the message. 🙂

If you miss out of being one of the first 100 fans, don’t worry, I’m planning more contests, so watch this space. Better yet, subscribe to my blog, either by entering your email in the subscription box (top right in side bar) or by clicking that nifty ‘+Follow’ button hovering on the bottom right corner of the page. That way you’ll get an email notification for my posts.

Guest Author: Lorraine Nelson’s Trouble Brewing in Thunder Creek

Guess who’s back on my blog! It’s romantic suspense author Lorraine Nelson. Okay, so you already got that from the title, I’ll just go ahead and tell you what’s up. Lorraine Nelson has recently released Book 3 in her Thunder Creek Series, Trouble Brewing in Thunder Creek.

Here’s a little preview of cowboy number 3’s story, and then a message from Lorraine:

Blurb
Lucas Manning, Sr. is married to Winnie, Roy Grayson’s mother. Trouble ensues from the moment authorities arrest her son for stalking and terrorizing Lucas’ daughter-in-law. Winnie feels guilty and withdraws from the Manning family. Suddenly a threatening phone call disturbs their lives even more as Winnie becomes a target. Can Lucas convince her of her worthiness and save their marriage? Or will danger and loyalty to her son drive a further wedge between them?

Excerpt

Lucas Manning Sr. walked toward Winnie, his wife of three years, and wrapped her in his arms, holding her tight against his heart. His love for this woman knew no bounds, but what he had to tell her was going to hurt her badly. He released her, took her by the hand and led her to the living room where they sat on the sofa, side-by-side.

“You’re scaring me, Lucas. What’s happened? Did they catch Zakia’s stalker? Are the kids really all right?”

“They caught him,” he admitted. “Luke, Zakia and their twins are fine, but….”

“But? But what?”

Lucas heaved a heavy sigh. There just wasn’t an easy way to break news like this. “It turns out that Roy was Zakia’s stalker.”

“Roy? My Roy? No! There must be some mistake,” she said, pulling away from him. “He wouldn’t do such a thing!” She jumped to her feet and paced the room, her agitation plain to see.

“Winnie, they caught him red-handed. He’s been arrested, and they’re holding him in the Calgary jail to await a preliminary hearing.”

“In jail? I must go to him!” Winnie rushed from the room, Lucas on her heels.

He grabbed her arm to still her forward momentum, the action turning her into his arms.

“Let me go! I need to see Roy.” Tears streaked down her cheeks as she pounded furiously on his chest, but he held tight.

“Shhh! Calm down. He’s not allowed visitors yet. If you want to see him, I can drive you up later.”

“Why Roy? Why are they picking on my boy? He’s been doing so good. He couldn’t have done this.” She collapsed against him and sobbed hysterically.

He eased them back toward the living room and sat on the sofa, pulling her down on his lap to comfort her as best he could. He’d never been much good around crying females. It made him feel helpless in the face of their distress, and he didn’t like feeling that way at all. Not one little whistling bit.

Suddenly, she sat up straight, swiping a hand across her eyes to brush away the tears. “A lawyer! Lucas, we have to get him a good lawyer.”

“Like hell we will! He got himself into this mess, and I’m not about to be the one to bail him out of it,” Lucas thundered.

“But he’s innocent! He has to be! He wouldn’t hurt anyone. Please, Lucas!”

“Nope. He terrorized my family, and I won’t lift a finger to help him.”

Angrily, she stood and faced him. “Roy’s your family, too. You became his step-daddy when we married.”

“Maybe so, but I’ve drawn the line.” Tiredly, he rose to his feet. He didn’t want to hurt her but this emotional outpouring for her no-good scum of a son was wearing on his nerves. “He used us—used family ties to ride along with the round-up. He intended to hurt Luke and his family, and he came damned close to succeedin’. I know this is difficult for you, honey, but you have to realize what’s at stake here.”

“Roy’s life is at stake here! I can’t just sit and do nothing. I’m going up there. I need to hear his side of things.”

“Fine, I’ll take you.”

“No, I don’t think so. You’ve made your position quite plain. I’ll drive myself and get to the bottom of this. They’ve made a mistake, I tell you. A huge mistake.” She turned on her heel, went through to the kitchen, grabbed her purse and car keys then paused at the door. “I pray they’re wrong, Lucas.”

Worried eyes sought his but he couldn’t give her the hope she waited for. “For your sake, I wish they were. Drive safe.”

With a nod in his direction, she left. He watched her from the back porch as she reversed her flashy red Mustang convertible and headed down the driveway, taking a piece of his heart with her. Her eyesight wasn’t what it used to be, and he worried about her. He should have insisted on driving her to the city.

Maybe it’s for the best that he didn’t go near Roy right now. His anger toward the man hadn’t abated one whit. How such a gentle woman could produce the devil’s own spawn was a mystery. Roy didn’t deserve his mother’s love. She’d bailed him out of enough trouble when he was younger. Now this.

Even from behind bars, Roy’s latest shenanigans were still causing trouble in his family. Only this time, it was his marriage on the line, and he knew it.

Over to you, Lorraine:

Writing – my passion, my dream. I started writing adult fiction as a hobby almost three years ago while on medical leave for hand surgery. With the aim of gaining more flexibility in my fingers, I began typing. I just sat at the computer and started writing. 🙂 When I finished that first manuscript seven weeks later, I was thrilled! Then came the process of editing, tweaking, and polishing until I felt it was ready to send.

Boy, was I wrong!!!

Needless to say, I’ve suffered through my share of rejections, but instead of giving up, they made me more determined to succeed. I’ve joined several writing groups and forums and have made many online friends, people who have been supportive and encouraging throughout this journey. By nature, writing is a lonely job, so it helps to have people with whom you can share with and do a little brainstorming. Except when the characters start talking to me. LOL That’s when I can immerse myself in the tale and write for hours on end, crafting their story their way.

With feedback received, I discovered where my writing lacked substance, studied those areas, kept writing, revising and submitting. I’ve entered contests and pitches, even won a couple, but publication still evaded me… until this past July when perseverance paid off.

It wasn’t a call that came, per se, but an email. Evernight Publishing wanted my book. So, by receiving an email notification I didn’t have to stutter excitedly through a phone call and embarrass myself, but without speaking directly to someone on the publishing end, it didn’t really feel real – until I opened another email that Sunday night and saw my cover. Squee! Fantastic!

I’d been waiting on the edits/revisions to come in and wasn’t expecting to see any cover art, especially at 11:30 pm on a Sunday night. My surprise was immediate and vocal. My son came running, alarmed, but smiled when he saw the cover. Everything had happened so fast!

On July 17th I subbed my manuscript to Evernight, on the 18th I received the contract, signed and returned it on the 20th and on the 25th, received the covers. No matter how you look at it, this team is super efficient. Marketing and promotion commenced with the release of the covers and my first book, Zakia and the Cowboy, was released on October 5th. 🙂 It became a Featured Title at All Romance Ebooks and in the top 100 on two of their bestseller lists… cowboy/western and mystery/suspense. At the time of writing this, Zakia and the Cowboy is up for Book of the Year at The To Be Read Pile. Quite an honor for a newbie. 🙂

The second book in my Thunder Creek Ranch series was released on November 28th and has been in the top 25 bestsellers for Romantic Suspense at Bookstrand, and reached #11 for Cowboy/Western at 1 Place for Romance.

Book 3, Trouble Brewing in Thunder Creek, released on January 6th. I’m so thrilled to be able to tell the stories of the people who live and love in Thunder Creek. Although writing a series is more difficult than a single title, I’ve written so much about them that I feel almost as if these people are family.

Book 4, A Cowgirl’s Pride, Leah’s story, is almost ready to submit.

Book 5, Cameron’s Quest, has been rolling around in my mind, itching to be written. Boy, does he add some spice to the mix!

It’s been a pleasure to share my journey with you. I hope this serves as inspiration to other writers to just keep learning, writing, and submitting; and, for my readers, provide a little “behind the scenes” info.

Post a comment or question below for your chance to win a free download from my Thunder Creek Ranch series. Check the links on my blog tour schedule at http://www.lorrainenelson.weebly.com to follow along and enter a few more times, increasing your chances of winning. I’m giving away one free download at every stop along the way. Winners will be announced on my blog Jan. 20th.
