Pirated Software

The Philippines has been struggling to counter piracy for sometime now, regarding the issue of using pirated software here in the Philippines, is a citizen to be blamed for using pirated software considering it is worth two months of his salary?I have to say no. I cannot say i blame the average individual for using pirated software like MS word for example, this software is already needed in society and to be competitive and not to be late on everything it is much more convenient for them, I for example cannot afford Adobe Photoshop and i have a project in need of it but i cannot afford the only way for me to do my project is to pirate the software.

How to combat piracy?

My possible solution is a country edition software “for sale only in the Philippines”(same as with books) and not make that version only available in the countries market, same as in china, russia, india and etc. make it affordable for the citizens in Philippine currency. in that way it is much more easier to counter it, making it affordable to the country’s market. it is a possible solution to the current problem with the help of the government countering it too.

Knowledge Management

Do you think your own organization (or a selected organization) will benefit much from Knowledge Management?

Yes, according to a source knowledge management is the process of capturing, developing, sharing, and effectively using organisational knowledge. in our organization using KM is very important specifically in the sales teams, they are the front line of the company and and need specific information in handling clients and there are certain knowledge that they can make use in handling clients. Mostly our managers who are experienced sales veterans are the ones who give specific KM to their agents. Like for example a client is a lawyer, the manager already knows how to deal with the lawyer types and they will teach there agents so that they can produce more sales to the company.

What do you think are the biggest barriers in implementing KM in your respective organizations?

the barriers in our organization would probably be greed, ignorance and arrogance of certain persons. for the greedy they will only think about their personal benefit and wont think of the group as a whole as long as they make a sale. for the arrogant and ignorant even though you would share specific knowledge to them they still tend to do what they want by there own means not listening to the information you tell them, these kind of people tend to not stay long in the organization.

“Knowledge is power but knowledge sharing is empowerment.”

Yes knowledge is power and can take you along way. but knowledge sharing can get you to the place where you want to be. It is similar to the Law of leveraging in which you make things easier for yourself by lets say hiring someday to do a portion of your work making it easier and faster for you to make things done. but in the concept of that sharing knowledge in the organization. your thriving for one goal and through KM it makes it much more efficient and faster towards that goal with the help of people. KM is key.

Business Intelligence Tools

How can organizations encourage more effective use of business intelligence tools?

Business intelligence tools or BI for say is already a necessity in modern day companies especially fast growing companies. BI if used the right way can make the company more efficient in the company performance and it can also help make you make the right decisions basing on the company’s previous performance.

To effectively use BI the company should first make a strategy on how they can make there employees use BI effectively. First would be Identify the roles of the employees on using BI tools and effectively managing the different roles of the employees. I personally believe in a rewards based program is the most effective type on raising the performance of employees with a little bit of employee empowerment. I would personally recommend a pay raise program, there should be criteria on how the raise should be given to the employee. 1) take a training program for BI(sponsored by the company) 2) Finish the program 3) give a 2-3 month assessment on the job performance on using the BI tools. If the its satisfactory and above the employee should get a raise.

Internet Shopping

Internet has been the most accessible form of information now a days. you can find people, locate areas, and search information via the internet. and now you can even shop through the internet.

In what ways can the Internet be more convenient in shopping?

It can be really convenient in shopping for clothes, gadgets, and alot of other stuff knowing it would be delivered right at your doorstep or a possible meet up with the seller, but its still better if its sent through your doorstep. other reasons in why its more convenient lets say for example you are look for a nexus 7 case(like me) i cant find one here in Iloilo so its much better and much less hassle free for me to order in the internet(personal preference is kimstore) and did i forget to mention sometimes its cheaper than the retail price? maybe due to no rent of spaces unlike retail areas.

In what ways is it inconvenient?

sometimes when you order online there’s abit of a processing included one would be(if you have no credit card) you have to find a payment center and scan the receipt and send it to the seller. other times when the product you bought is damaged and you have to pay extra for the shipping fee again. another would if you buy a shirt and it couldnt fit your size then its just gonna be ohwell.

List at least three products you would have no hesitation buying over the Internet?

1.) Nexus 7 case because i need one badly.

2.)Nexus 5 because its cool fast sleek and im a big fan of google plus its cheaper online and i cant find a store selling it here in the city.

3.)A discounted authentic katana that i can afford. because its the perfect weapon and a good decoration in my room. preferably owned by a famous samurai.

Three products you might want to think about before buying?

1.) Food(ordering in a fast food resto). Because i wont be sure if i receive it on time, it could be spoiled by then

2.) Appliances. because it could get damaged during shipping and i would have to pay extra to ship it back just to get fixed.

3.)Clothes. because I’m not sure the size will fit me.

Three products you would never consider buying over the Internet?

1.) Property. It could be a scam, could be not but i would prefer seeing a property before buying it.

2.)Books. because you can get books for free on the internet.

3.)Water,Raw Meat and other stuff i could just buy at the supermaket.

Outsourcing I.T. security

The definition of I.T. security “The field covers all the processes and mechanisms by which computer-based equipment, information and services are protected from unintended or unauthorized access, change or destruction”

Should a company outsource I.T. security?

Personally I would say yes,  first of all it is way more convenient. you dont have to personally deal with a bunch of employees like hiring an I.T. manager and hiring a software engineer, employees and assistants but deal only with one person. tell the company your outsourcing what you want and the will deal with it.

What are the issues involved when you turnover security to an outside organization?

there are pros and cons in ourtsorcing I.T. security like for example the legal information can leak in the internet. the outsourcing company can delete important files that are crucial to the company, there is also the problem of a system crash and all the files disappears or gets corruptes(hopefully theres a backup) giving this burden to an outsource company is takes alot of trust and courage. the company has to do a background check on the outsourcing company for safety measures and to know of there crediblity as a company like how many projects have they done and what is the success rate of the company and ofcourse the higher the success rate probably the more expensive the company is.

In case there is a need to outsource, what stipulations would you include in a service level agreement with an IT security outsourcer to ensure that it did not exploit the openness of your systems and steal strategic and sensitive information.

according to a friend of mine who works at Realtime Data Management ServicesInc.(RDMS) before making a project, the IT company and the client will form agreements and requirements and contracts regarding the scope of project it may or may not include maintenance post-installation. and depending on the contract the company can sue the outsourcing company if there was a breach of contract.

IT and Me (Ernest)

When I was born information technology was already a developing industry then.  My first encounter with IT was probably the time when I first used a land line phone or watched television. At the time I might not have been fully aware of the relevance of information technology but it was already a significant part of my lifestyle, then and to this day.

IT has been in my life for a long as I can remember. I had my first PlayStation at around Grade 5 and since that time playing video games (like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire and Tekken among others) has become a constant hobby. I also remember often going to arcades at the mall. I received my first cellphone at around age 12 and that was when I learned how to send text messages (especially group messages, which were so popular at the time; maybe even to this day).

I was first introduced to the PC (or personal computer) when we started having computer classes at school. Naturally, I started playing video games on the PC. I remember being introduced to the game Ragnarok which was my very first online gaming experience. It was so expensive because on top of paying for the use of the computer at an internet cafe, we would have to buy cards to play Ragnarok. I didn’t really understand much of how the internet worked back then.

Then around the time I entered high school, using the internet became more popular and accessible, what with the spread of internet cafes and the advent of social media, especially the social networking website Friendster, and instant messaging, especially Yahoo! and MSN Messenger. I also began to get more interested in PC components (like the RAM, video card, etc) for my own personal education, especially because I wanted to know how to improve my own PC. Not only with regards to hardware, but software as well.

When I entered university, the IT industry was the dominating industry. Devices were not only getting better, but also cheaper. At this point, almost every single home now had not only at least one PC (or laptop), but an internet connection. And of course almost everybody had a Facebook account. Since I was a marketing student, I was quite dependent on the internet with regards to doing research for class presentations and school projects. I began to learn that even big companies that are not necessarily tied to IT had to change the way their systems worked to keep up with the changing landscape. I also realised in my previous school (SPUI) the evolution of their system going from paper to computer-based. They are even using e-wallets, which are sort of like debit cards that you can reload, and these are used to pay for items you buy in certain parts of the university like the bookstore or the cafeteria.

Then I started frequently using Facebook, YouTube (which is not only handy for entertainment but for personal education as well, because there are a lot of “how to” videos) and I also learned about torrents. IT started developing at a really impressive rate, with smartphones and tablets popping up everywhere. The reason why smartphones and tablets are dominating the markets is that you can have all the features you need from a PC (create and edit Word documents and Powerpoint presentations; download files; even watch movies) on a small and portable device.

The evolution of the IT industry is, for me, one of the main reasons why everything in this era is so fast-paced. To get ahead, we have to be up to date and utilize the technology that is available in our lifetime.
