We drove to Roxburgh on 01 November to have a look around. My birthday, 31 October, was a lousy day weather-wise but the next day was lovely so we did my birthday drive then. This herd of placid white cattle and calves were in a roadside field and looked stunning! I hopped out and took... Continue Reading →
Yellow Silver Beet
Nigel's garden has this area of coloured silver beet (chard) and the plants eventually put up flower stalks. They're hilarious! Colourful chunky stems, warped and sinuous, and tall. Today I took some photos and in this post I'm showing yellow silver beet - part of a larger patch with a variety of colours. It's just... Continue Reading →
Eye-catcher
A couple of years ago we visited Roxburgh (nearby town) and a lovely lady gave us a gorgeous iris - two actually - completely different types/colours. One's never re-surfaced but a few days ago this "strange" plant in our garden produced a blue bud and today I found the blue bud fully opened into this... Continue Reading →
Admiral on Francoa
Sharing with you these four photos of our native (endemic) Red Admiral butterfly that I took in our garden on 18 February 2025 (our summer). The butterfly was very wary of me, frequently leaving, circling and re-alighting. Tapanui, West Otago. New Zealand

A big machine was making a lot of noise somewhere near - the sound was so irritating! I stalked over to the blind, jerking it... Continue Reading →
Long Striped Hedge
We had a beautiful, blue sky, sunny, spring day today. In the late afternoon we were driving back home through West Otago farmland when the west-face of this hedge got my attention with its striped appearance. Some kind of golden cypress interplanted with blue-foliage trees. New Zealand
Rocking On
Without further ado, I present to you, Riverton Rocks. Southland. New Zealand.
Ventifact Rock
This post is two things: a photo of a rather nice form of rock, and secondly an invitation. This is a ventifact rock displayed on a concrete outdoor surface, near the museum in Riverton. I really like its form, and incidentally, I like the bits of colour on it too.. lichens I guess. It also... Continue Reading →
Riverton and Bridge
A while back I did quite a few posts about Riverton in Southland, and I still have a few photos to share. This is the last scenic one, taken from the area outside the museum, at the bridge end of town. You can see the bridge in my photo and the estuary waterfront area. There... Continue Reading →
