“The mission of Student Advocates for Higher Education (SAHE) at San Jose State University is to promote higher education among immigrant students regardless of legal status, through activism, advocacy, community involvement, peer support, and leadership development. SAHE has created this scholarship to reward students who are highly motivated to reach their goals through education and hard work.

Selection Criteria

1.   Scholarshipis open to Bay Area students and students who will be attending school in the Bay Area (Santa Cruz included)
2. Recipient must be enrolled or planning to enroll next Fall quarter or semester at a Community College (CC), California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) or private University in California, as Undergrad, Graduate student, or enrolling in a Credential Program.
3. Applicant must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
4.    Applicant will be interviewed by the SAHE Scholarship Committee in person.
5. Recipients mustbe present at the Scholarship Ceremony to receive award in Early June. (Recipients will be notified in advance)
6. Scholarship is available for renewal every year.

Are your parents legal residents but you never got your papers? You may be covered by a nationwide class action lawsuit pending in the Ninth Circuit.

For several years now, we’ve done the hard work of keeping our politicians accountable, leaving no stone unturned in the fight for our rights. We’ve occupied Congress with our demands for justice, and confronted ICE on multiple occasions in multiple states. Our work has directly changed the course of the immigrant rights movement. Now we’re stepping it up and taking our fight to court.

California’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan offers health coverage to medically uninsurable people who have been rejected by commercial insurers or offered coverage at unaffordable prices.

As part of the national health reform package, California has a contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to establish a federally funded high-risk pool program to provide coverage for eligible applicants.

This insurance option stops on Dec. 31, 2013 once the entire national health reform program begins and federal laws go into effect to prevent insurers from denying pre-existing conditions or charging them higher rates.

But until that day arrives, people enrolled in the state plan will be covered for inpatient and outpatient care, doctor visits, preventative care, prescriptions, mental health services, x-rays, pregnancy care, durable medical equipment and more.

To be eligible, requirements include:

U.S. citizenship
Must be uninsured for at least the last six months.
Must have a pre-existing condition and within the last 12 months have been denied individual health insurance coverage or offered/charged premium rates higher than the rates offered by the California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program preferred provider organization.
