Spool Remix Artwork

DENZEL HIMSELF (@CountZelda)

Denzel Himself is a 19-year-old rapper/producer hailing from South London, home of King Krule andHawk House. He has built up a lot of homegrown buzz with singles ‘Young Insolent’ and ‘Selsie’ as well as an appearance alongside Piff Gang’s Milkaveli on JD. Reid’s ‘Nobunaga’. He is also one half ofBrxtherhood, a creative partnership with Gabriella Skies for whom he produced Burnouts – her debut EP which saw release in 2012. Denzel describes himself as the lovechild of J*DaVeY and Jim Jones. He lives by the mantra: ‘Those who can do it, won’t. And those who would do it, can’t. Do it.’

Of this particular remix he says: “This is my first official remix for an artist I’ve always respected and looked up to. Me and him working together was always inevitable because we dug each other’s work, so there was no better time than his Stones Throw album debut!”

PYRAMID VRITRA (@PyramidVritra)

22 year-old, LA-based Pyramid Vritra has been making beats and writing rhymes since he was just ten years old. When he was in high school in Atlanta, he founded the hip hop collective NRK (Nobody Really Knows) and subsequently linked up with Matt Martiansof Odd Future after Martians heard NRK’s tracks on Myspace. When Pyramid Vritra and Matt Martians met, they naturally clicked and the collaborations began. They formed The Super 3 production group, and soon after, he and Martians formed the Jet Age of Tomorrow releasing their music via Odd Future.

During the day Pyramid Vritra drives a forklift around a home improvement store in South Los Angeles. His co-workers have no idea he makes music, he says ‘he tries to not talk to anyone there.’ Introverted in nature, Pyramid Vritra allows us to find out a bit about him through his debut 16-track record, Indra. The album swings in and out of darkness and highlights Pyramid Vritra’s knack for rhyming and making obscure beats – all sample free.

‘Fallback’ is the latest single from Bristol rapper ThisisDAand sees him teaming up with Brighton born electronic producer Benji Boko.

Following the release of his acclaimed debut album Super Arkane, produced entirely by Mankub, and latest single ‘Voodoo’ with Chicago’sMojekThisisDA continues to veer away from the ‘Boom Bap’ label initially placed on him by joining forces up with another experimental producer.

Having first discovered Benji Boko’s work when both artists were featured in Clash Magazine’s Rapture & Verse column back in February,ThisisDA was inspired to work with Benji based on the hip-hop remixes on the producer’s SoundCloud page. ‘Officer Parker’ is the latest single from Manchester collective Murkage‘s forthcoming debut album Of Mystics & Misfits. It was originally premiered last month on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and follows lead single ‘La Plage’which previously received the coveted ‘Next Hype’ accolade.

Dealing with themes surrounding recent accounts of Police brutality, the track asks the ultimate question; who watches the watchmen?

The video, directed by band member Gaika Tavares (who was also responsible for Bipolar Sunshine’s ‘Where Did The Love Go’) is a game changer for Murkage‘Officer Parker’ is incomparable to the majority of the UK’s urban music output, with such high production value and an incredible cast which includes Oliver Wilson (son of Hacienda/Factory Records bossTony Wilson) as the villainous lead, UK rap legend Fallacyand Latvian model Eliza Trump, as well as the entire Murkage Cartel

As Murkage Dave exposes his previously unwitnessed and surprisingly calming singing voice, the tension builds before GAIKA unleashes a call to arms that combines Punk-energy with Eski-era Grime in classic Murkage fashion. The track DESTROYED crowds at Reading and Leeds festivals last year, and continues to be a favourite amongst fans who have witnessed the band live.

Filmed in Manchester and recorded in Murkage Dave‘s one bedroom flat, ‘Officer Parker’ was produced by Murkage, Amat Amas Amo and Acropolis Sound – all members of the Murkage Cartel. Nothing about this track was outsourced.

Along with the release of the video, Murkage are offering afree download package of ‘Officer Parker’ for two weeks only, which also includes the Star One remix, a grimy reimagining of the single vocalled by guests Manga (Roll Deep), Bugzy Malone and Fallacy

The album, Of Mystics & Misfits, drops on the 28th Aprilavailable on Digital, CD and Vinyl formats.

“Murkage are poised for a breakthrough, ready to rewrite the rulebook of British rap.” – CLASH

“This year has seen Murkage elevate themselves from underground kings to the faces of the new UK sound.” – EARMILK

Juna Cosmos unleashes debut video ‘Da Vinci Prophet’…

ACYGPH

‘Da Vinci Prophet’ is the lead single from London-based rapper/producer Juna Cosmos’ forthcoming EP Mindless and boasts an incredible video to match its ambitious title.

Premiered via RESPECT MAG, the ‘Da Vinci Prophet’ plunges the listener into a much darker environment than those who listened to, Degenerate Art, his collaborative EP with rapper Paper Plates might expect. The EP circulated the blogosphere last year receiving support from the likes ofEARMILK, SBTV, DropOutUK and StupidDope, building an initial buzz for the upcoming talent’s skills as a producer.

Now taking the reigns behind the mic as well as the boards,‘Da Vinci Prophet’ is laden with menace and oozes a sinister vibe, combining a trap-style beat, filled darkly with life, with lucid but shadowy lyrics.

The track is coupled with a monochrome Femi Anderson-directed visual, set in a somewhat dystopian world, filled with decadence, debauchery and psychedelic scenes of intoxication denoting a sense of escapism. Combined they create one cohesive asset coated in dark energy and radiating vitality and offers a compelling taste of what’s to come from his solo debut.

Asante unveils his own brand of alternative rap with ‘Show Me The War’…

ASANTEpress

Listen/Download Here:

https://soundcloud.com/asanteofficial/show-me-the-war/s-WbTPT

‘Show Me The War’ is the new track from London alternative hip-hop artist Asante.

The track gives us an early insight into what to expect from the 24 year old South Londoner’s forthcoming debut Finding Found EP dropping soon.

A self taught musician, producer, rapper and songwriter Asante cites a bi-continental and culturally diverse upbringing as key influences on his music. His unique sound comes from a collision of contrasting scenes and interests that have soundtracked his life from a love of film scores, London’s grime scene and artists ranging from Daft Punk andN.E.R.D to Kanye West.

Setting out to create a feeling of anxiety and unease,Asante’s interest in film and visuals informed the sound of‘Show Me The War’“For this beat I had this idea of someone walking down a very large almost never ending corridor with a sort of hazy look to it, which was basically my visual representation of anxiety,” he explains.

The track focuses around two soldiers going to war. “I can’t imagine anything making someone feel more uneasy than the thought of going to war,” says Asante of his subject matter. The song sees a pair of soldiers going to war from opposing sides, believing that they are doing good. After seeing war for what it is, their minds are changed. The first half of both verses are written from a first person perspective whilst the second half summarises the views of the author and gives Asante’s opinion on the events.

Asante’s debut EP intends to take listeners on a journey, and engage them on multiple levels. “The EP is an experience, and I want people to feel it when they listen,” he describes of the project he has been crafting.Finding Found is a taster of what I do as a an artist.”

Mojek & ThisisDA unleash new single ‘Voodoo’…

VOOdoocover2

Listen/Download Here

‘Voodoo’ is the latest single from Chicago raised producerMojek and Bristol rapper ThisisDA.

Following the release of ThisisDA’s acclaimed debut albumSuper Arkane, which sees him taking on the traditional Boom Bap sounds of Mankub, ‘Voodoo’ demonstrates a totally different side of the up-and-coming exciting UK prodigy.

The Bristolian initially discovered Mojek through his affiliation with Chicago’s SaveMoney movement (known to the world through Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa) as the producer has been working with SM member Tokyo Shawn(producing his Community Service mixtape) as well as releasing House and Club Music, some of which is under the moniker Young Africa

Both with their roots set in rival African cultures (ThisisDA has a Ghanian background, whereas Mojek was born in Nigeria) the pair started out by discussing how it is growing up as children of African immigrants in the Western world. “Me and Mojek really connected on the basis that we were coming from a similar place of influence, but our sonic outputs were totally different,” explains ThisisDA“I sent him some of my music and we decided to collaborate something on a song or two. We made sure ‘Voodoo’ had the African drums element, staying true to both our cultures but still appealing to Hip-Hop.”

With his brilliant debut album garnering acclaim from the likes of Earmilk, Noisey, BBC. The Needle Drop and SB.TV,‘Voodoo’ is a testament to ThisisDA’s versatility and a demonstration of what’s to come from the young talent who is only getting started!
