Spey Fishing the Alaska King Salmon in 2016

dscn0194

We took off to a prime location in the Super PA-12 with spey rods and camping gear with high hopes of good runs of the gorrilla of the Alaska salmon, the king.   After 9 hours of getting through a few mountain passes we set down on a prime bar big enough for the supercub.

The next few days became a blur.  Fishing the tides to and beyond dark, sleeping a few hours, getting up and hitting the holding fish.  Reels screamed, rods bent and we helped each other net the big bruisers.  Being without boat we lost some hot and fast fish that ran downriver, or around root wads.  In the middle of the day taking the plane up to find locations for beautiful leopard rainbow trout, untouched by anglers on our light-spey rods was a chance to rest the arm and back muscles. Then back to camp and keep swinging flies and hooking up kings to the wee hours.   Cooking and food was compact, quick and good.

Jason is the master of food/ice control in the mini Yeti cooler, and cooking on a small camp stove.

In the end, we lost count after a 100 hookups on the reel.  47 Kings came into the net.   Awesome trip of fishing, friendship and seeing the state.  Oh….. we found  a few new places to go too!

Not to mention I got pierced and a new ear-ring

11pm at night, back sore, bears wandering, had to put on some rock n roll.

Was just going to lie down for a minute….. snoresville

Chasing the Roosterfish

LaPaz 2013

This year I went a little later, heading to LaPaz on Memorial Day weekend.  This year I brought two flyfishing brothers, Mark and Bill.  Mark is a WWW Master Caster, and Bill is good on the flyrod.  Also joining us was my friend Terry who just wanted to get out of cold Alaska, and brought a spinning rod.   Alaska Airlines stopped service to LaPaz, so we all flew into Los Cabos, and waited to others to show  up and took a 3 hour drive up to LaPaz. Jay Murakoshi is a great host, and he had the same great program going with us staying at the LaConcha hotel, van ride to LaVentana and back each day, and the pangaro guides paired good with the fishermen.  The good news this year was that there was bait, but we had to run 45 minutes to meet the Canalla brothers who were gathering it.  Weather was good, fishing was awesome, and the evenings in LaPaz were a hoot.

Here is a video that gives a good story line.  Next year we are back for sure!

Video taken from the top of Shell Hills, where I climbed up on my Arctic Cat snowmachine to take in the wonder of the Alaska Range, including North America’s two highest peaks.

To all of our friends and families out there. Jane D. Baldwin took this video after dinner tonight, and I am taking Anne Ver Hoef to airport in a bit to go visit her family on Christmas day. May there be more peace in the world, we have been blessed, but it is in spirit and good fortune. There are many living day to day or hour to hour with much uncertainty, strife and pain in their lives. If we all do one thing to help someone, wouldn’t it make a big difference and all of our world be better? I challenge everyone to do so. Random acts of kindness are always rewarding.
