Assignment 9

Finally,the last assignment!

For this final task,we have to create a simple database for student management using Microsoft Access.Honestly, this is (again) my first time using this program hihi.I have no idea how to use it at first and thanks to Muhaidir who help me a lot and then I referred to the module given to us by Dr Rosseni.pheww! I managed to figure out anyway.

The problem I faced was the last table got stuck and I end up creating a new one because nobody knows how to solve the matter and so did I.So,creating another database was quite tiring and I almost gave up at first..

But anyway,I managed to create a new one together with my partner,Veni.

So I really learned a lot especially creating a form and also relationship among the tables..

like they said, the last one is always the toughest 😛

Assignment 8

this week assignment is to create a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel.

the spreadsheet is for our financial management and student assessment.

for financial management,I only list down my financial from May to December 2011 and also,

kick in the students’ marks  using Excel!

It was fun though, putting all the numbers hihi but I got bored after a while..This is my first time using Microsoft Excel anyway..

I would like to thanks Imran and Muhaidir for helping me out this time.Thank you so much~~~

I guess I will see this thing again when I become a teacher one day,InsyaAllah 🙂

Assignment 7

this week assignment: Producing Creative Multimedia Production!

I would say that producing a video, edit them, put a sound to it was really a though job! I spend almost 5 hours searching for the right pictures, editing here and there and at last the video is done!

but one thing I forgot to put -.-

our names!

I just realized after it was completed into a video T-T

so,I have to be careful next time and do check my work before produce anything! lesson to be learnt this week…

I guess that’s all for now.

I didn’t shared the video here because to me,it wasn’t that good hihi

We will save them and burn it in the CD for finals 🙂

Assignment 6

for this week,we have to produce our own brochure and also booklet regarding to our topic; Operating System.

We decided to split the work.Veni produced the booklet and I produced the brochure using Microsoft Publisher. But we did cooperate on what to put and the idea,so it wasn’t one-on-one work..

This is my first time creating the brochure,so for me..it was kinda hard but once you get to the last page where we put our names,I felt it was quite okay after all 🙂

I guess that’s all for assignment 6.

We will shared our products at our own yahoo group 🙂

Continuation of Mini Research

In the previous post, I have mentioned that we had to carry out a survey using online survey monkey. We also distributed printed questionnaires to our classmates and some of our friends from different faculty. Alhamdulilah, they responded quite well.

After collecting the data from the distributed survey, we moved to SPSS matter. Frankly, that was the first time I used SPSS and in the same time I did not have a clear idea on how it works. Same goes with my classmates. However, thanks to Encik Yusoff who guided us, we managed to put the data in SPSS.

Move on to report. We somehow managed to finish the report though my pair and I were a little bit late.

In our report, we inserted together:

  • abstract
  • introduction
  • literature review
  • research approach
  • findings
  • recommendation and conclusion

I think that’s all for today’s post

Have a great day ^^

Week 6: Survey Research

For this week assignment,we have to conduct a survey research on Operating System topic. For the pilot test,we have to use Survey Monkey. No,it’s a type of monkey,it’s the name of a website that can conduct any survey in an online form.We registered for free, added 10 questions and linked it to our classmates at the Facebook and Yahoo Group,so that they can answer our questionnaire.

Our questions are all easy, you just have to click YES or NO.You can also refer to our post in my Facebook Group to answer them 🙂

Here is a preview of our questions:

1. Operating system is an intermediary between a computer user and computer hardware.

2. Spyware is one of the common problems of operating systems.

3. When program crashed repeatedly, reboot your computer.

4. Reboot the computer when hardware stops working.

5. Windows 7 is not one of the example of computer operating systems.

6. The operating system starts and shuts down a computer.

7. Mobile operating system is similar to computer operating system.

8. An adware remover is a program that detects and deletes spam.

9. All sizes of computers typically use the same operating system because operating systems generally are written to run on any type of computer.

10. The process of starting or restarting a computer is called booting.

that’s all for week 6 🙂

Week 5: Common Problems Of Operating System

For assignment week 5,we had to identify the research problem on Operating System. It wasn’t an easy task because we had to find materials from google scholar, google books and also UKM research database.I spent 5 hours searching and searching then only can write the report..alhamdulilah,we managed to finish it although it was pretty hectic.

So,here is our report:

COMMON PROBLEMS OF OPERATING SYSTEM

In the previous assignment (week 4) my partner and I have already discussed and attached a document at our own Facebook Group regarding the topic of Operating System. In there, we introduced them specifically what is Operating System all about. However in this week assignment (week 5), we are focusing further on the common problems of operating system that we face whether directly or indirectly.

The common problems are:

SPYWARE. Spyware or also known as internet pop-up.  Spyware is a category of program that tracks your activities on your computer, and then responds to your activities by opening up internet browsers to pages that may sell products that your surfing activities indicate you may be interested in.

Spyware gets in through finding holes in the Web Browser. The spyware taking up the computer maybe an ActiveX Control, a standalone executable browser that is loaded into the user’s computer when she or he visits the web containing spyware. Spyware can also installed itself and one of its vulnerability involves a cleverly coded Web Page, that is designed to fool the users into thinking that is a safe and trusted Web Page.

Another way is tagging along in e-mail. Email programs that displayed HTML email (such as Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird) are often subject to the same vulnerabilities that have beset Microsoft Internet Explorers in recent years. The spyware get loaded sufficiently into the computer by display mail message. Apart from that, spyware gets in the computer by hiding in the software downloads. Many downloadable software or purchasing through online or over the counter contain spyware that are silently installed when you installed the program.

Spyware utilities are used to overcome spyware. For example, you can set up Firewall which can block anything suspicious or harmful. Another way is by using Lavasoft’s Ad-aware or Spybot that search and destroy spyware. You have to know that antivirus software isn’t enough to fight spyware because it can’t do the work of spyware utilities.

PROGRAM CRASHED REPEATEDLY. Operating system crash commonly occurs when a hardware exception occurs that cannot be handled. When encounter this kind of problem, you need to reboot your computer. Your program could keep crashing because your machine is in a bad state. Restarting the computer will ensure that the next time you start your program your machine will be in a proper state. It’s possible that some of your program’s resource files (dll’s, binary, xml, etc.) are corrupted or altered. The next step would be to try and reinstall the software that is causing the problems. For the best results, you will want to uninstall the current version you are running, and then reinstall the software from scratch. But you have to make sure to back up any saved files or data that you use with the program before you uninstall the program.

HARDWARE STOPS WORKING. Often, software or OS issues can cause hardware malfunctions. In order to fix these kinds of problems we will need to uninstall the device from the operating system, and then allow it to scan and reinstall the hardware for you.

The operating system is the most important type of system software in a computer system. Without an operating system, a user cannot run an application program on their computer, unless the application program is self booting. So, we have to take precautions in order to save our computer from facing this kind of problems like we stated above.

From this assignment,we learned something here:

  • operating system is really important that we have to take a good care of our computer and prevent the system from crashing
  • we must be careful when downloading something to avoid spyware (common mistake among the students)

ok,that’s all for week 5 🙂

Week 3-4: Operating System

For assignment week 3-4,my partner (veni) and I had to pick a topic regarding to computer literacy issues. We had chosen Operating Software. We didn’t have a clue what it was all about but hey, let’s learn something new right? 🙂

Operating System

What is an Operating System

The operating system is the core software component of your computer. It performs many functions and is, in very basic terms, an interface between your computer and the outside world. In the section about hardware, a computer is described as consisting of several component parts including your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other parts. The operating system provides an interface to these parts using what is referred to as “drivers”. This is why sometimes when you install a new printer or other piece of hardware, your system will ask you to install more software called a driver.

What does a driver do?

A driver is a specially written program which understands the operation of the device it interfaces to, such as a printer, video card, sound card or CD ROM drive. It translates commands from the operating system or user into commands understood by the the component computer part it interfaces with. It also translates responses from the component computer part back to responses that can be understood by the operating system, application program, or user.

Drivers play a major role in the operating system. A driver is a program designed to comprehend the functions of a particular device installed on the system. A driver enables the operation of numerous devices, including your mouse, keyboard printer, video card and CD-ROM drive by translating commands from the operating system or the user into commands understood by the associated component. It also translates responses from the component back to the operating system, software application or user.

The operating system performs other functions with system utilities that monitor performance,

debug errors and maintain the system. It also includes a set of libraries often used by applications to perform tasks to enable direct interaction with system components. These common functions run seamlessly and are transparent to most users.

Security Concerns

The fact that an operating system is computer software makes it prone to error just as any human creation. Programmers make mistakes, and inefficient code is often implemented into programs even after testing. Some developers perform more thorough testing and generally produce more efficient software. Therefore, some operating systems and more error prone while others are more secure.

Here are some common security issues that pose a threat to all operating systems:

Instabilities and Crashes – Both of these instances may be the result of software bugs in the operating system. Bugs in software applications on the computer may also cause problems, such as preventing the system from communicating with hardware devices. They can even cause the system to become unstable or crash. A system crash consists of freezing and becoming unresponsive to point where the machine needs to be rebooted. These issues vary depending on the type of operating system.

Flaws – Software bugs will not only make a system unstable, but also leave it wide open to unauthorized users. Once these vulnerabilities are discovered, attackers can exploit them and gain access to your system. From there, they can install malware, launch attacks on other machines or even take complete control of your system. Software developers usually distribute security patches rather quickly to update the operating system and fix the vulnerabilities.

Types of Operating Systems

There are several types of operating systems, with Windows, Linux and Macintosh suites being the most widely used. Here is an overview on each system:

Windows: Windows is the popular Microsoft brand preferred by most personal users. This system has come a long way from version 1.0 all the way up to the new Vista and soon to be released Windows 7. Although Windows has made strides in regard to security, it has a reputation for being one of the most vulnerable systems.

Unix/Linux: The Unix operating system has been around for years, and it is well known for its stability. Unix is often used more as a server than a workstation. Linux was based on the Unix system, with the source code being a part of GNU open-source project. Both systems are very secure yet far more complex than Windows.

Macintosh: Recent versions of the Macintosh operating system, including the Mac OS X, follow the secure architecture of Unix. Systems developed by Apple are efficient and easy to use, but can only function on Apple branded hardware.

so basically,(if you don’t want to read this long post)

the system that you use in the computer like Windows 7 and Mac OS X are the operating system, the system that manage and run your computer.

Same goes with the operating system in your smartphone.OS for mobile phone is similar to computer OS,but somehow more simpler and deal more with the wireless versions of broadband and local connectivity, mobile multimedia formats, and different input methods.

ok,that’s all for week 3-4  🙂

Week 2

For week 1-2,we have to create

  • our own official yahoo and gmail account
  • our own facebook and facebook group
  • our own yahoo group
  • and also running this blog as our own portfolio weeks by weeks

I’ve already created all of the above. All the links are listed at both my yahoo and gmail signature.

Then, we have to write a report on Course/Learning Management  System (CMS/LMS) using Google Doc and upload it at our own yahoo group. This is my first time using Google Doc..I’ve no idea that we can write a report using Google Doc before this.It was an easy task actually.

That’s all for week 2 🙂

Our first GE1155 class

Last Monday was the first class of GE1155.First of all,GE1155 is the course code for Computer in Education.Half of my classmates and I are under the supervision of Dr.Rosseni Din.

In the first class,we had the ice breaking session with Dr. Rosseni. She is really nice and approachable that made me feel comfortable being in her class.Unfortunately, she won’t be around after this to monitor us closely because she’s going to Makkah to perform hajj. But don’t worry. She might be thousand miles away from us but she will continue to monitor us from far.Of course, thanks to the superb technology;the internet!

Besides that,we also had been introduce to the course itself.Looking through the course proforma,I think we need to work hard because I don’t find them easy and they need a lot of hard works.

For the first activity,we have to create a new gmail or yahoo account, start a blog in here and participate in yahoo and facebook group. Not to forget, exploring SPIN like we did for other courses.

That’s all for the first post I guess 🙂
