Hey there I was wondering if you could help me with something. I've been looking up some demons and which one to work with. In the descriptions they had times associated with them like daytime, morning, evening etc. In your opinion does it matter when you summon a demon ? It just looks kinda weird to me summoning a demon at like 10 in the morning

da-at-ass answered:

OMFG that last sentence is golden.

It depends on what tradition/interpretation you’re observing. Some people are firm on the time correspondences and other correspondences, some think they help but aren’t necessary, some don’t care about them at all. I don’t factor them in very much, though sometimes correspondences teach me a little more about the entity. For instance, Astaroth’s correspondence to alchemical Venus is very fitting considering the morning star in her seal and that the five pointed star is often the symbol of Venus. Since Astaroth was syncretized into Judaism via Astarte (and some interesting name-translation-fu), the Venus correspondence makes perfect sense considering her connection to a Venus-based deity. That doesn’t mean I have to use the planetary correspondence very much in my work, but sometimes it does factor in and it also helps expand my understanding of Astaroth.

I think @graycloak is good to talk to about these more ceremonial aspects, I have a tendency to improvise things with tape and glue rather than follow the instructions. Both ways are valid, and sometimes can be combined.

Thanks for the mention, @da-at-ass! ♥

“In the descriptions [the demons] had times associated with them … does it matter when you summon a demon?”

Okay, so…

Yes, and no … … and also not at all, all at the same time.  😅

Demons are intelligent beings; this means there are a lot of things you can say about them that will be true in one situation that won’t be true in another, just like if you were talking about people

For example, someone who only knows me from a corporate-office context will have a very different idea of how to “correctly” interact with me than someone who only knows me from an occult context.

That said, even under the somewhat rigid guidelines of the Solomonic Tradition, these rules of engagement are, by and large, understood to be a framework of Introduction Etiquette. The protocols are strict, inconvenient, elaborate, and usually performative, yes.  However, once you’ve satisfied the Spirit World’s equivalent of the “social contract” by jumping through the correct Introduction hoops, you’re able to negotiate a faster, more convenient way to summon that Spirit from then on.

So, all of those strict, inconvenient, elaborate, performative conjurations you see in the old grimoires are not things you will need to do all of the time; once you’ve established contact and worked out a relationship, you’re able to use the shorthand summoning you’ve worked out together.

This, by the way, is one reason for having a Liber Spiritus: to hold such personal information of the Spirits you’ve contacted as these instructions you’ve negotiated on how to summon them more quickly.  Think of it like spending time networking to get an introduction to someone specific, and then, in that conversation, making sure to get their phone number so you can text them directly from then on.

But then, there are always the extraordinarily lucky… who always happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Or the extraordinarily charismatic… whose words drip with honey, whose eyes light up any room, and whose presence brings smiles to all.

Or the extraordinarily charmed… who can compensate for the rough edges of an ill-formed etiquette, through the sheer force of their will.

For these folk, they can sometimes grab a name out of a hat and conjure them up without any consideration for the Spirit’s preferences. And you know what? More power to them. If you are so lucky, or charismatic, or charmed, by all means, take the shortcut.

But now a warning: Always know who you are dealing with in advance. I mean… as much as possible, at least. Some Spirits are more forgiving when it comes to protocol than others. Some Spirits are just jerks to people they don’t have relationships with, and will absolutely have you chasing your tail, wasting your time for the shits and giggles of it. So, do your research, know who you’re dealing with, and plan accordingly. Sometimes, the Introduction Etiquette way is the best way, even if you are one of the extraordinary ones. Pick your battles.

Oh look! Just what my budget needs โ€” more books to buy ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซ

From Iberia we have the Cypriani Magici Septem Horae Magicae, a long-lost Book of Saint Cyprian, rumored to have existed but frustratingly lost to the mists of time โ€“ until it wasnโ€™t. From Scandinavia we have Cyprianus: St. Cyprian and the Black Book in Scandinavian Folklore, a translation of Danish legends relating to the Cyprianus which broadens our understanding of the cultural and folk-magical context of this fabled grimoire. From Byzantium we have The Greek Prayer of St. Cyprian: A Medieval Phylactery, an apotropaic prayer in which pagan sorcery and Christian exorcism meet.

Annairbnbelle?

[Edit: the linked arrivalโ€™s use of โ€œAirBnBโ€ was probably misleading. In [his original announcement video], Rife says, โ€œyouโ€™ll be able to book a night or weekendโ€ to do investigations, which makes me think itโ€™s actually more of a supervised โ€œattraction.โ€ Whichโ€ฆ I meanโ€ฆ itโ€™s better than the run amok unsupervised AirBnB scenario I originally thought it was.]

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

I know the Warrens are a โ€ฆ โ€ฆ โ€ฆ complicated topic. And Iโ€™m not here to defend or defame with this post, just share some somewhat shocking news.

Matt Rife and Elton Castee have purchased the Ed and Lorraine Warren home and are โ€ฆ leasing(?) the estateโ€™s museum pieces. I put that as a kind of question because he says, โ€œWe do not legally own the items, but we are the legal guardians and caretakers of the itemsโ€ and that guardianship is for the next five years (2025 - 2030).

So Iโ€™m not sure how that works - what โ€œguardianshipโ€ means .

But hereโ€™s the part that made me sit upright and be all, are you kidding me?

[Rife] added that fans will be able to โ€œbook a night or a weekendโ€ in the Warrensโ€™ former home. โ€œIt will be operated as an (Airbnb)โ€

๐Ÿ˜– I donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ something about the unsupervised, run amok nature of that just gives me the ick.

On a positive note, at least we have photographic evidence that Annabelle wasnโ€™t actually stolen back in July when Dan Rivera was found dead in his hotel room and she was nowhere to be found. [that story]

Dropped Out. Yesโ€ฆ AGAIN ๐Ÿ˜’

As some of my long-term followers may remember (if they predate the great deletioning), my magical journey began with [The Grey School of Wizardry]. I even ran a side blog with a friend of mine for while, focused on our studies (mostly) and the tribulations of trying to do magic-themed homework in modern life โ€” @gsw-apprentice . That side blog didnโ€™t really gain traction, and neither @solanablue-blog nor I put that much effort into it, soโ€ฆ it is what it is.

My path has crossed with that of GSWโ€™s a few times since, with the most recent being last year, where I was offered a promotional tuition rate if I came back (again, again). I thought, why not.

Well, a year later, this is why not ๐Ÿซ

I have done absolutely nothing with it. I thought shelling out tuition for the whole year at once would be motivation to make use of their resources, but instead I might as well have just piled the money in my living room, pissed on it, flicked it off, lit it on fire, and laughed as it burned.

Iโ€™m really kind of mad at myself, but - and my followers are probably rolling their eyes at this - itโ€™s hardly surprising given my โ€œโ€โ€recentโ€โ€โ€ work-ethic tripandstumbledownthehillfacefirstintoapileofnailsandbrokenglass.

I still think GSW is a great program, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a broad spectrum based magic education, my life is just too chaotic right now ๐Ÿฅบ and I canโ€™t afford to keep throwing good money after bad.

Asterion Mage’s Seal of the Four Rulers

image

Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ve all seen this 1,000 times, but this is a reminder that this seal is by the occult artist Asterion Mage. Itโ€™s getting increasingly difficult to find him or his work online, but he has helped me in the past, and I feel somewhat protective of him and his work.

In the [original post] where he shared this back in February of 2014, he explicitly states:

Please do not copy, repost, share, tweet, tween, twerk or blog without my permission or without linking it to this blog. Please don t make T-shirts, mugs or epoxy keychains out of it.

Nonetheless, I have seen this countless times on Etsy, eBay, and other shopping outlets over the years without even giving credit - sometimes going so far as to say this is an ancient seal from rare grimoires. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜

It can be easy for an artistโ€™s credit to get lost over time, so I just wanted to put this back out there: Asterion created this seal and specifically stated not to use it with cheap, mass-marketed merchandise. Please do your best to respect that by not buying items for which heโ€™s clearly not getting credit or compensation.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™
