From Al- Habib Kazim Ja‘far Muhammad al-Saqqaf

1)            Make due preparation for the first night of the month of Ramadhan as this is the night that Allah t’ala gazes upon his slaves.  Whoever Allah t’ala gazes upon, he’ll never be punished.[1]

  • Read Surah Fath on this night
  • Make ghusl (male & female)
  • Intend to fast for the entire month

Some people are cognisant of the Divine gaze and are affected by it whereas others remain unaware and unaffected…

2)           Complete the obligation of fasting but also other works to draw nearer to Allah t’ala such as strengthening the ties of sisterhood.[2]

  • The devil always attempts to cheat a human being and render him in a state of ingratitude
  • A small amount of shukr will make one ascend in degrees
  • We should make a firm intention to act in accordance with what we have learnt, even if it is a little.
  • Consistent small works and a little thankfulness is better than a lot of inconsistent acts.
  • The mercy that Allah t’ala shows you is in proportion to the mercy you show to others.
  • Our Beloved  said: when 2 Muslims meet 100 mercies descend – 90 are for the one with the best character and higher countenance (by the mercy of Allah t’ala 10 mercies go to the other).

3)             Recite the noble Quran by day and by night;

  • To recite it by day will ensure that the Quran will bear witness for you on the day of judgement
  • To recite it by night (especially in the last third of the night) will ensure that the Quran is actually embodied and will physically act as an intercessor for you on the day of judgement.

4)            Pray 20 rakat – Salaatul-Tarawih

5)             Breaking the fast:

  • With dates – 3, 5 or 7 – this prepares you to embrace the  odd night of Laylatul Qadr as you have taken on “oddities” in your acts.
  • Pray to Allah t’ala as every day a dua will be accepted from you:

–          1st night – a good ending

–          2nd night – emancipation from the hell-fire

–          3rd night – well-being here and in the hereafter

–          4th night – companionship of our Beloved

–          Rest of the nights (26 in total) = choice of your own prayer

5)               Make an intention for each fast on the night preceding the fast.

6)            During the daylight hours control the tongue and don’t speak out of anger, lying, backbiting – the fast can be rendered void if you do so.

7)             In the last 10 nights of Ramadhan say abundantly the dua of our Beloved

أَللّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنّ يْ

Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibul afwa fa-fu anni

O Allah! You are the Most forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me.

8)            There are blessings in suhoor – even if you are not hungry, observe eating even if it’s a small amount.

9)             Don’t argue/dispute with anybody – especially in the last 10 nights.

10)          If Jummah falls on an odd night in the last 10 days – bring it to life as this is likely to be Laylatul Qadr.

11)            If you go to the Masjid make intention for itikaaf for the duration of time that you spend in there – to increase your rewards.

12)          If you go to the Masjid for itikaaf or salaatul-tarawih – when you enter the Masjid say that you are making an oath to Allah t’ala upon yourself – to pray 20 rakat or to sit itikaaf – as  it   then becomes wajib for you to complete the oath.  Therefore the reward is x70 more for performing a wajib.

Habib Khazim said if we do all of the above we have good hope that we will bring to life all of the blessings of this sacred month inshallah…

Jazakumallahu khairan dear ‘Dew-drop’ and a special sister for their contributions.

May Allah allow us all to take benefit from time spent in blessed company and enable us to bring life to the month ahead, may he allow us to remember those in need and may he grant us freedom from the fire and entry to jannah without hisab.

Ramadhan Mabruk to all

Sha’ban

The word Sha’ban [in the Arabic script] is spelt with five letters:

The shin stands for sharaf [nobility]         ش

the ‘ain for ‘uluww [sublimity]                    ع

the ba’ for birr [piety]                                 ب

alif for ulfa [harmonious intimacy]             ا

and the nun for nur [radiant light]                   ن

The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said:

“There are five nights on which du‘ā’ is not turned back: Friday eve, on the eve of Rajab, the 15th night of Sha‘bān, Laylat Al-Qadr, and on the eve of the two ‘Eids.”

Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Radi-Allahu anhu, reports that Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, has said: “Allah Almighty looks upon all those created by Him in the middle Night of Sha’ban and forgives all those created by Him, except the one who associates partners with Him or the one who has malice in his heart (against a Muslim)”

SUPPLICATION ON THE NIGHT OF 15th SHA’BAN

O Allah! You shower favours on everyone And no one can do You any favour. O The Possessor of Majesty and Honour, O The Distributor of bounty and rewards, There is no one worthy of worship except You. You help the fallen And provide refuge to the refugees And give peace to those who are in fear.

O Allah! If in the Mother of All Books that is with You You have written me down as someone who is Doubtful of achieving salvation, or deprived, Or rejected or without enough sustenance, Then, O Allah, with Your Grace Remove all of these misfortunes from me and in the Mother of All Books that is with You, establish me as someone who is blessed, with abundant provision and charitable good deeds. Indeed, what You said in The Book You sent Through the tongue of Your Blessed Prophet is true That Allah changes and establishes what He wants And with Him is the Mother of All Books.

O My Lord! For the sake of Your Divine Manifestation On this fifteenth night of the blessed month of Sha’ban In which You issue all Wise and Irrevocable Decrees Remove from us all calamities and hardships, those that we know about as well as those that we don’t, while You know everything. Truly, You are the Most Powerful, Most Generous.

And may Allah the Exalted shower blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad, and on his family and his companions And all praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Arabic script  Transliteration

Also in the Hadrami tradition it is also highly recommended to read Surah Yā-Sīn 3 times on that night, each time with a specific intention: 1. The first time with the intention of Allah  increasing the length of your life in worship and good deeds. 2. The second time with the intention of Allah protecting you from tribulations. 3. Lastly, with the intention of Allah not making you reliant on other people.

Allahumma  innaka  ‘Afūwun  Karīmun  tuib  ul  ‘afwa  fa‘afu  ‘annī,  Allahumma  innī  as’aluka  al-‘afū, wa  al-‘āfīyah  wa  al-mu‘āfāt  ad-da’imah  fī  ad-dīni  wa  ad-dunyā  wa  al-ākhirah.

O Allah, You are Pardoning and Generous and You love to pardon, so pardon me. O Allah, I ask You for pardoning, good health [in body], and to be [spiritually] health always in my religion, and in this life, and in the hereafter.

Salaams and Jummah Mubarak

‘And if we truly love the Messenger of Allah then we must love his Companions—so for instance, if we love Shaykh So-and-so, then by extension we must also love the companions of that Shaykh; as for loving that Shaykh yet not loving his companions, that is a lie. True love has its signs

A sweet burst of the most beautiful example of meeting for the sake of Allah subhana wa ta’ala and his Habib Sallallahu alayhi wasallam this Jummah…

On Repentance

If you desire repentance, it is necessary upon you not to be void of reflection throughout your life. Reflect on what you have done during your day. If you find obedience, show gratitude to Allah (تبارك وتعالى) for it. If you find disobedience, reproach yourself for that and seek forgiveness from Allah (تبارك وتعالى) and repent to Him. There is no session with Allah (تبارك وتعالى) that is more beneficial to you than a session in which you reproach yourself. Do not reproach it laughing and cheerful. Rather, reproach it in a hardworking and sincere manner, showing a frown and being sad hearted, defeated, and lowly. If you do this, Allah (تبارك وتعالى) will replace your sadness with joy, low state with high rank, darkness with light, and veiling with unveiling.

Allah help us to take ourselves to account before we are taken to account for what we have earned.

In seeking cure for my constant shortcomings as sister to the many wonderful people in my life (you know who you are) I was advised to seek guidance from a book that has been sitting on the bookshelf for a while. ‘The Duties of Brotherhood in Islam’ is book fifteen of Imam Ghazali’s Ihya Uloom al-Din and proves to be an enlightening read which focuses on the nuances and subtleties of relationships through encouraging us in actions that strengthen bonds so that insha’allah they will be a waseela for us on the day of reckoning.

“Know that the contract of brotherhood is a bond between two persons, like the contract of marriage between two spouses. For just as marriage gives rise to certain duties which must be fulfilled when it is entered into, so does the contract of brotherhood confer upon your brother a certain right touching your property, your person, your tongue and your heart – by way of forgiveness, prayer, sincerity, loyalty, relief and considerateness.”

The contract is further elaborated through an exposition of the eight duties of brotherhood in Islam. Some of the Prophetic sayings enjoining each duty are summarised below…

The first duty is the material
The Messenger of God (peace & blessings be upon him) said:
“Two brothers are likened to a pair of hands, one of which washes the other.”
“Each time two people are in company together, the dearer to God is he who is kinder to his companion.”

The second duty is to render personal aid in the satisfaction of needs
Al-Hassan (May Allah give him peace) used to say, “Our brothers are dearer to us than our families and our children, because our families remind us of this world while our brothers remind us of the Other.”

The third duty concerns the tongue
As for silence, the tongue should not mention a brother’s faults in his absence or presence. Rather one should feign ignorance
Ibn -al Mubarak (May Allah give him peace said, “The believer tries to find excuses for others, while the hypocrite looks out for mistakes’’

The fourth duty is to use the tongue to speak out
The Messenger of God (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “The Muslim is brother to the Muslim. He does not wrong him, does not forsake him, and does not betray him.” He also said, “Abu Hirr! Be a good neighbour to your neighbour and you will be a Muslim. Be a good fellow to your companion and you will be a Mu’min.”

Imam al-Shafi’i (May Allah give him peace) said:
“To admonish your brother in private is to advise him and improve him. But to admonish him publicly is to disgrace and shame him.”

The fifth duty is forgiveness of mistakes and failings
It has been said that one should seek seventy excuses for one’s brother’s misdeed, and if his heart will accept none of them he should turn the blame upon himself, saying to his heart, “How hard you are! Your brother pleads seventy excuses, yet you will not accept him. You are the one at fault, not your brother.”

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (May Allah give him peace) said, “The affection of a day is a link. That of a month is kinship. That of a year is a blood-tie. If anyone cuts it, God will cut him off.”

The sixth duty is to pray for one’s brother
For in reality his prayer for his brother is a prayer for himself.
The Messenger of God (peace & blessings be upon him) said:
, “Whenever a man prays for his brother in secret, the angel says, And to you the same.

The seventh duty is loyalty and sincerity
“Tell My servants to say what is kindlier. Surely, Shaytan sets them in variance.” (Al-Qur’an 17:53)

The Messenger of God (peace & blessings be upon him) said:
“Among the seven whom Allah keeps in His shadow are also two men who love each other for His sake, constant whether together or apart.”

The eighth duty is relief from discomfort and inconvenience.
Al-Junayed (R) said, “If two became brothers for God’s sake, and one of them is uncomfortable or embarrassed with his fellow, there must be a fault in one of them.”

May Allah enable us to fulfil our obligations and bring us together with the intentions to benefit each other in this life and the akhirah.

Rajab Reminder

Salaams & an early Rajab Mabrook to all

We are mubarak indeed in that we have been fortunate enough to see another sacred month where we can benefit hugely from the blessings that rain down in a month known as the month of Allah.  I wanted to share this reminder sent by a servant of Allah…

THE RAJAB LETTER

This is an excerpt from the book Kanz Al-Najah wa As-Suroor (The Treasures of Success and Happiness), a book highlighting the special qualities of each month. As the blessed and holy month of Rajab approaches (please check your local sightings or mosques to know when the month of Rajab begins in your area, hopefully this information will be of use in allowing us all to appreciate it and benefit from it:

So, my dear friend, put forth a great effort in the month of Rajab, may Allah have mercy on you. It is the season of great profits, so take advantage of your time! Whoever is spiritually sick due to their sins – know that the medicine has come.
* Know that Rajab is a virtuous month in which worship is gloriously rewarded – especially fasting and seeking repentance (istighfar).
* Also, making du’a during the eve of the first of Rajab is highly recommended. The Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, said, “There are five nights in which du’a (supplication) is not rejected: the eve of Rajab, the 15th night of Sha’aban, the eve of Friday, on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr, and on the eve of Eid Al-Adha.” [Al-Suyuti in his Al-Jami’].

* On the 27th night of Rajab, the Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, was taken on the Isra wa Mi’raj (The Night Journey and Ascension to the Heavens). This was a great and glorious night, as is known to most Muslims, in which the Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, met his Lord and was given the commandment to perform the 5 daily prayers.

* Rajab is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran (the four months are : Rajab, Dhul Qi’da, Dhul Hijjah, and Muharram):

إن عدة الشهور عند الله اثنا عشر شهرا في كتاب الله يوم خلق السموت والارض منها اربعة حرم
{The number of months is twelve according to God, in the decree of God, on the day God created the heavens and the earth; and four of them are sacred} (9:36)
* Rajab is Allah’s month in which He pours His Mercy upon the penitent and He accepts the actions that people have done for His sake. The Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, said, “Rajab is the month of Allah, and Sha’aban is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah.” (Imam Al-Suyuti in Al-Jami).
* Scholars say: Rajab is the month of repentance (istighfar), and Sha’aban is the month of sending peace and mercy (salawat/durood shareef) upon the Prophet, and Ramadan is the month of Qur’an.

* One highly recommended act to do is say 70 times after the Fajr and ‘Isha prayers every morning and night of Rajab:

“اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني وتب عليَّ”

Transliteration: “Allahuma ighfir li wa Arhamni wa tub ‘alayya.”

Translation: Oh Allah forgive me, have mercy upon me, and grant me repentance.

* Sayyidna ‘Ali, may Allah be well pleased with him, used to allocate extra amounts of time for worship on four nights – the first night of Rajab, the nights before the two Eids, and the 15th night of Sha’aban.

* It is also highly recommended to say the following Prophetic prayer (known as Sayyid Al-Istighfar or the Master of Repentance) 3 times every morning and every evening in Rajab:

اللهم أنت ربي، لا اله الا أنت خلقتني وأنا عبدك، وأنا على عهدك ووعدك ما استطعت، أعوذ بك

من شر ما صنعت، أبوء لك بنعمتك عليَّ وأبوء يذنبي فاغفر لي فإنه لا يغفر الذنوب الا أنت

Transliteration: Allahuma anta rabi la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduk, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’adika ma astata’at, ‘authu bika min shar ma san’at, abu’u laka bi ni’matika ‘allaya wa abu’u bi dhanbi, faqhfir li fa’innahu la yaghfir al-dhunub ila anta.

Translation: O Allah, you are my Lord, and there is no god but you. You created me and I am your servant, and I am upon the convenant to the best of my ability. I seek refuge in you from the evil I have brought upon myself. I admit all the blessings you have given me and I admit my sins, so forgive me, for no one can forgive sins save You.

And success is from Allah

A Reminder

O you who believe! Let not a group of you belittle another; it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor let some women belittle other women; it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor defame one another, nor insult one another with nicknames. How bad it is to charge someone with iniquity after they have believed. And whosoever does not repent, such are indeed transgressors. O you who believe, avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, nor backbite one another

(Al- Hujurat 11- 12)

Salaams & Jummah Mubarak

Was pondering over the following verses recently and then came across this excellent khutbaby sidi Khalil Moore. He talks through the above ayahs and then gives an excellent commentary on 11 types of backbiting as defined by Imam Ghazali in Ihya ‘Ulum Al- Deen. The trappings of shaytan are numerous and gheeba is something that we can easily fall into as it is common place in today’s society; even for those of us who consider ourselves to be knowledgeable and therefore more vigilant. This reminder is for myself first and foremost and I hope it is of benefit to others too insha’allah.

May Allah forgive us and protect us from fooling ourselves, may he purify our hearts and allow us to truly benefit from our teachers & pious predecessors.

Promises

And when you were born the earth shined and
the horizons were illuminated by your light
So it is we who in this luminance and this light,
do tread the paths of right guidance

Al –Abbas (may Allah give him peace)

The Manners of the Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon Him)

He would stay silent for long periods and laugh little, yet he had a sense of humour and liked to see others smile. When he met with his people he would first give them the greeting of peace and blessings and then embrace them. Caressing them, he would pray for them. When he was with other people he would not leave their company until they left, and when he took someone’s hand, he wouldn’t withdraw his hand until the other person released it.
When someone whispered into his ear something that he did not want others to hear, he would not pull his face away until the other did.
He was very compassionate and loving, especially to women and children. When he promised something to someone, he would fulfil his promise without fail at the first opportunity. When he sat with his people, they sat around him in a circle, and in love and fascination they would be so quiet and still that if a bird had sat on they heads, it would not have flown away.
As he spoke, he often lifted his eyes to the heavens. When something that greatly pleased him was announced to him, he would immediately prostrate as a gesture of thankfulness to Allah, and his face would shine like the full moon. When he began speaking he would always smile.
In all his relationships he never caused two people to be angry at each other or to have to defend themselves. Whenever he was asked for something, he would give it if he had it. If he did not have it, he would not refuse, but would not respond. He never said no. When he was asked to do something, if it was possible he would say yes. If it was not possible, he would keep silent. He did not approach nor listen to people from whom he expected to hear bad talk, and he did not accept people’s talking against each other.

Shaykh Tosun Bayrak, On the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him)

In his monthly address to the masses Habib Umar bin Hafidth reminds us that this month is one where we attempt to renew our connection to the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him). He reminds us the calamities with which we are afflicted are due to our heedlessness and lack of adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) He says ‘…we have neglected the binding ties of guidance with the Messenger of God (blessings and peace be upon him and his family and companions) and we have neglected to place him in the proper station of leadership that will take our minds, emotions, feelings, intellects, and hearts unto a beautiful obedience to him’

On reflection of this beautiful commentary of the manners of The One most beloved to Allah, one realises that what is being asked of us is not beyond our means. Allah says in the Quran:

“Those who pledge loyalty to you [Prophet] are actually pledging loyalty to God Himself- God’s hand is placed on theirs” (Quran 48:10)

Having made a pledge long before a time that we can remember, perhaps it is time to renew our promises in relation to The Chosen One (Peace & blessings be upon him) and do our utmost to keep them, to promise that despite ourselves we will try to improve in all of our affairs and try to be more like him, to promise our interaction with God and creation will be as he showed us (may peace & blessings be upon him)

Insha’Allah with the barakah of this Mubarak month and the sweet nobility of these intentions, Allah will bless us with the attributes of The Praised One Sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

Tawfeeq is from Allah

Prince Among Slaves

“Slavehood (`ubudiyya) is manifesting abasement. Worship (`ibada) is more emphatic, for it is the limits of abasement, and no one is deserving of it except the one who has absolute granting, which is Allah Most High. This is why he said, “That you do not worship other than Him.” [Qur’an, 17.23] (Raghib al-Isfahani)

Slavehood is a state which is the epitome of oppression and subjugation according to ‘free’ thought. But for the believer, it is the state of the whole of creation and ennoblement and ascension lies with this because the basis of worship is submission.

So in becoming a slave we realise we are helpless but for him subhanahu wa ta’ala, we are totally dependant on his mercy, in our asking of him we are free of the problems of this world which hold us captive.

Recently I was reading up on a film which depicts an inspiring true story that tells us about the journey of the African Muslim prince Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Ibn Sori who was captured in Timbuktu and sold on as a slave in 18th century Mississippi, America. His story is one which was not told until much later in the 20th century and is a lesson for us all in resilience, and fortitude all of which are characteristics of the believer.

May Allah allow us to submit both inwardly and outwardly and enable us to adhere to the example of his Habib sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

Ameen

Dhu’l-Hijjah

I swear by the Fajr and the Ten Nights

(Quran- Surah Fajr: Ayah 1-2)

As you know the days of Dhul Hijjah are almost upon us. Allah ta’ala himself swears by the sacredness of these days and we hope to use them as an opportunity to gain closeness to Him. This is a time we can also use to renew ourselves and our intentions, to supplicate for forgiveness and betterment for the Ummah and to walk with and stand with those undertaking the pilgrimage this year.

Some nasiha from a special sister on praiseworthy acts that one can busy themselves with during this time;

Praiseworthy acts for the Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

  • To fast the Ten days for those not performing hajj
  • Supplicate on the day of Arafah along with all the Muslims on Hajj

Arafah is the ‘Peak’ of Hajj and emphasised by the Prophet Muhammad Sallahu alaihi wasallam who said:

Hajj is Arafah

The day before Eid on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah between Dhur and Maghrib

Allah will forgive you all of your sins and the greatest of the greater sins is to stand on Arafah and to believe that you will not be forgiven by Allah the Most Merciful Oft Forgiving.

Supplications to Allah should be full of Sidq- truth, regret, sincerity and brokenness

Allah says- Through a Hadith Qudsi

I am with those whose hearts are broken because of me

It is important to remember power is attributed to Allah, and Allah grants it to whom He wills and Can forgive sins as high as mountains and can turn people’s hearts who are incapable of forgiveness.

The Prophet Sallahu alaihi wasallam is reported to have said:

“The Awliya of my Ummah are like the Prophets of Bani Israel”

Fasting is recommended for all who are able except those on the Hajj as they need their strength to perform the rights of Hajj itself.

Linked here is a very beautiful and powerful dua based on the hadith of the Prophet Sallahu alaihi wasallam to be read on the days of Hajj, between Dhur and Maghrib x10 each day. If read Allah ta’ala will forgive ones sins, past and those to come.

Also when reciting la ilaha illallah one can add;

Addadah khalqiq wa ridda a nafsiq wa zeenatha arshik wa midada kalimatiq

“There is no deity worthy of Worship except Allah, up to the amount of Allahs creation, until He is pleased, to the amount of the beautification of His Arsh and the spiritual healing behind His Words.”

As is narrated when a woman was reciting tasbih with date stones or pebbles from a large bucket, the Prophet Sallahualihawassalam approved what she did and then said: it would be better for you to recite: Addadah khalqiq wa ridda nafsiq wa zeenatha arshik wa midada kalimatiq once it would equal what you have read.

Dua to be recited in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount of nights and lifetimes,

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount of days and months

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Waves in the sea

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Great rewards

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Rain and Raindrops

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Leaves upon Every Tree

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Fur upon Every Animal

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Pebbles and Grains of Sand

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Flowers and Fruits

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Breaths that Man takes

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount Blinks of an Eye

Things that have happened and things that will come to pass

There is no God but Allah, He is greater than what they associate with Him

There is no God but Allah, He is greater than all that they can bring together

There is no God but Allah, In the Night as it draws to a close, for the morning as it comes to daybreak

There is no God but Allah, up to the amount of Wind that blows upon Rocks

There is no God but Allah, from this day onwards till the trumpet is blown, all of creation, all that He has created from today until the day we Meet Him.

Ameen thumma Ameen

May Allah grant an accepted Hajj to all those intending to make this journey and allow all of our actions to be praiseworthy all of the time.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank-you to you all for the beautiful emails especially to our teachers and the mubarak sisters who shared the above advice and to sincerely request that you forgive me for anything I may have done or not done.

Please keep us in your dua.

A vowelled version of the dua with translation from our dear teacher can be found here
