I love being out in the elements with what I like to refer to as real peeps! Although I could have done just fine without the crazy 40 mph winds in Mount Dora this past weekend, which closed the whole show down early. Along my journey, I am also fascinated to hear jewelry and hair accessories admirers call me an artist. Even at times humorous. Don’t get me wrong, I truly appreciate their appreciation of what we create but I guess I just never got into the whole pretentious idea of working with “mediums” I work with fruit, nuts, seeds, fabric and feathers. And I am just not the type of gal to take myself too serious! I am asked about my work space. I take a deep breathe and try to make it sound more glamorous for those that need the studio vision in their brain to appreciate my work but in all reality it is wherever and whenever I get an urge to put something together.I truly do thing that if you are into “ART” of any sorts, it is subjective to those that see it.
So for those that see me as an artist:
I choose lovely natural elements from my tropical yard that include but are not limited to citrus plants, orchid blooms, papaya trees, and lo-quot trees. My aim is to keep the bright juicy colors as Mother Nature intended them and turn them into natural jewelry statements. I also love all things with a feminine feel and think that, as a woman, hair is a great way to express ourselves in any setting. I collect vintage material, unique fabrics, colorful, dainty feathers and baubles of all sorts to create one of a kind hair accessories for all ages.
In the eyes of my husband:
Darling, could you please get put the feathers away and off the coffee table so I could sit down and watch some TV? While you are at it, the dog knocked over a container of pearls and they are all over the floor. How much more material do you need to buy, isn’t the 50 some odd yards of material enough for you to work with for right now? I made the coffee, could you pour it? Honey, I really am quite hungry right now, it is nearly midnight right now. And almost every time I try to hit the computer and put an update on facebook or blog…”What ya doing” as if I am playing video games.
But I DO LOVE HIM SO MUCH!
For those of you that truly have gotten to know me, this is a day in my world:
“Coffee, honey did you make coffee yet?” I simply can’t exist with at least 4 cups in the morning. It takes me almost two hours to sort my work areas which may include the coffee table, couch, end tables, kitchen table, kitchen counter top, some fold up tables or any other flat surface I can spread out on. You see, if I can’t see all my little baubles, I can’t possible create anything with them. So I spread it all out. Feathers are sorted by colors, size and even what I call a look or feel I am trying to create. Sparkly baubles are in tins, buckets, zippy bags and anything else I can get hold of. Fabric…this is a touchy one. Sometimes I have it cut up, ripped up or stacked up. When my son was in school, I think they called it ADHD when a child did the same things. I have big bags of material ready to be turned into flowers, in every corner. Then there is the yards stacked up in my sorting drawers. Orchids, nuts, seeds, and orange peel are drying or in different stages of my creative process all over the house. EVEN in RICH”S work studio! This he truly hates. I try and I do ask…most of the time but I like to spread out and have the attention span of a two year old therefore I always have 3 or 4 projects I am working on. He is so damn methodical and organized it is scary. I actually get freaked out at times just looking at his work space. I simply could never find anything in his studio.
As you can see, I have a much different view of myself than the world. Don’t get me wrong…I appreciate those of you that think I am an artist. TRULY! In fact I think it is just because I have too many ideas floating around in my noggin. Or maybe I get bored easy.

genuine dried fruit jewelry
Lastly, I have been working on some fun new additions to my all natural organic jewelry selections. I hope in the next two weeks to have my Juicy! orange peel ready for sale again. These are such a time consuming creative process. Just ask my ladies who got some of my first batch and have been waiting for months for the next ones to be ready. When these hit the tables, grab them quick because this time I was over 4 months in between this newest batch. I have mixed some mediums (OMG I just used one of those artist terms!)like orange peel and olive pits. Plus the peach pits are almost done and soon will be turned into funky, vibrant earrings. Oh, yeah then there is the new dried fruit jewelry I am creating right now called Fruit Loops.
Here’s some pics from this past weekend…
So catch you later alligator, I am off to sort, spread out and grab another coffee!
