The Lake Isle of Innisfree by William Bulter Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore,
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

Million Dollar Baby- The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Question: The poem was read by Frankie to Maggie as she lay on the bed. What is the theme of the poem and why did Frankie chose the poem to read? What is the significance of the poem to him and Maggie? Do you notice any transformation or change of the relationship between Frankie and Maggie? What is it? And what might contribute to the change?

Answer: I think the theme of this poem is a person who has many stresses in his life and he/ she recounts an ideal place he/ she wants to move in. And the reason why Frankie chose the poem to read, I thought that’s because Maggie injured very serious. And at that time, both Frankie and Maggie were under a bad mood, the world in their eyes was gray. Because Frankie wanted Maggie to be happy and get better soon, he read " The Lake Isle of Innisfree" to her.
To talk about the transformation of the relationship between Frankie and Maggie, it really a big change for sure. At first, Frankie was discriminatory to Maggie because she was kind of old for the wrestling and didn’t have good skills. But after he training Maggie, he treated her like his daughter. And the reason contributed to the change might be that Frankie saw the heart of firm from Maggie. And it touched him. And that’s why the relationship between change.

Musee des Beaux Arts

After reading the “Musee des Beaux Arts", I felt that W.H. Auden didn’t agree the behavior of Icarus, or maybe I should said that the Breughel thought it, too. Beacause W.H. Auden wrote this poem after he had seen the “Fall of Icarus", maybe he just wanted to convey the mood of the moment that he saw the picture or maybe he had the same feeling as Breughel’s. According to the poem, he said “In Breughel’s Icarus, for the disaster; the ploughman may have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, but for him it was not legs disappearing into the green water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on,". I thought that he wanted to tell us that humans should not be greedy of the things they could not have, such as Icarus wanted to fly to the sky. Because that would only make themselves be punished. We could see that the ploughman were not even care about the strang sound he heard. And though Icarus fell into the sea near the expensive delicate ship, it still had its own way to go and didn’t care about “the accident" that happened near by it. According the above symbols, I could say that in W.H. Auden’s mind disagreed with Icarus and so am I.

Mother Tongue

Q3.What is the family background of the author? How does she look at it? Does she feel proud of it or embarrassed about it?

A3.The background of the author was a family from Shanghai and immigrated to the United States. At first, Tan felt shameful about her mother’s poor and too simple tongue. But after a few year, Tan thought that the way her mother used English was very vivid, direct and was full of her own observation and imagination. And we can see that Tan felt proud of it in the last three paragraph.

Q5.Any insporations you get from reading the story?

A5.After reading this article, I feel proud to the Chinese. Although the American despises the Asian, there are still many Asian having great accomplishments. The inspirations I get in this story are: don’t feel embarrassed when your family has a difference as Amy Tan and don’t limit your talent and ability. I think just do you have to do and to reach the goal that you gave yourself, if you work really hard then I believe that you will reach the goal someday. 🙂

Assiganment on The Sorrows of Young Werther No.1

Have a close reading on May 22, think and answer the following qustions with proper evidences (舉故事中的實例證明). We have no word limitations this time, but be sure to make your perceptions fully expressed.

Q1.Werther says “ That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people, and I myself am constantly haunted by it” at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us, we people everywhere? If Werther also see the life of man as a dream, does his dream of life have any difference from others’? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]

A1.I think he wanted to tell us that He thought the past of his life was great, perfect, such as a dream, but after his father died, he had a different thought, and truly realize that life is a dream. And I think he wanted a life that without worry, just enjoys the thing he like, for example, drawing.

Q2.How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like chidren? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]

A2.He thinks children are the happiest people. Because they always without worry. Children live the day for only drag around the dolls, putting their clothes on or off, tiptoe around the capboard where Mummy keeps the sweets locked up, and after havong finally snatched the desired bit, stand with full cheeks and shout:" More!" Because they are content easyily. They don’t have as much pressure or the desire as the teenagers or the adults have. (That’s put teenager to belong to the adult.) For the adults, they may have a lot of desires. Like, they want more and more money, power, ect. And they may have the problem with the relationship of the people they meet in the society.Family, friends, boy/girlfriend or even the boss and the workmates. Also, they may have pressure, like, if he/she does well in school or whether the company satisfies him/her or not. But for the children, they don’t have to worry about that. They just play with their dolls or tiptoe around the capboard where Mummy keeps the sweets locked up then they will feel happy. I think that is why Werther think that the happiest people in the world are like chidren.

Q3.What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the youngWerther you learn from the letter on May 22?

A3.He thinks he will be the preson who is fit in with the description he tells. Because from his words, they seem to be an expectation of himself. He hopes to become a person that he tells.

Before reading the letter on May 22, I thought Werther was a boy who has a sorrowful past. But after reading that, I found out that actually Werther was a boy that has a mature mind. From his letter, I saw a great expectation and Werther had different thinking as the teenager as his age. I think he was a little bit precocious.

HW:Eassy Assignment on the Divine Comedy

Q1.In Dante V of Inferno, those who are include in lust are sent to the second circle of hell, including Semirmis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, Tristan, Francesca and Paolo. Choose one of the sinners lost in lust. Explain why Dante put him/her into hell?

A1.Helen was the queen of Sparta. After she met Paris, she fell in love with him and she abandoned her country and her husband,Menelaus, then she went to Troy with Paris.

Q2.Why is Dante moved to tears after Francesca’s description of love and why does he finally fall “as a dead body falls" after her personal account of her intimate relationship with Paola?

A2.Because Dante feels touching about thier love. Although the love between Francesca and Paola may be rejected by the people who lives around them, they loved each other inflexibly and died for it without repent. So Dante fainted like a dead body.

Q3.From Dante’s presentation of Francesca and Paolo, we are encouraged to consider th place of moral responsibility on descrition of love, sex, and violence on our own day. We cancertainly discuss music, television, movies, adn advertising (as well as literature) in these terms Who is more(or less) responsible and therefore accountable for unacceptable attitudes anf brhavior in society: the creator adn vehicles of such messages or the consumers and audiences?

A3.I think it depends on what kind of person you are. If it is the problem about love, somebody may think that it may be the audiences should taking the responsibility. Because the problem may caused by the friends who live around the couple. Like, they may starts a rumor, and the problem will sprout between the lover. But in the other hand, others may think that the consumer should taking the responsibility, because if a relationship can only be destroyed by a little rumour and suspect, then this kind of love is not a true love. Because the love is built on trust.
