The fog settled in after another nice sunset along the central California coast.
I saw this scene yesterday evening. After about 1/2 hour of nice landscaping light, I watched the last bit of it fade away at this spot at McClures Beach, 30 miles north of San Francisco. No HDR. This is the most ‘interesting’ photo tagged with ‘travel’ out of 8+million photos on Flickr for now!
My last lighthouse shot got quite a bit of buzz so I decided to shoot another, this time, at Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. I was on my way home from work one night last week and noticed that the cloud conditions were shaping up for what might be a really great sunset. I’d been wanting to shoot the lighthouse in Discovery Park for some time now, so I pulled the trigger. Having never been there, I had no idea where to park and since you can’t actually see the lighthouse from the road, picked the first spot I found. Lucky me, I don’t think it is actually possible to park any further away. But hey, the weather was great… Just had to lug my gear… Oh, and I had on my work dress shoes, which made for a fun walk… and sore feet! Oh the things we photogs sacrifice to get the “shot”. Well after about 40 minutes of walking, I reached the lighthouse and was blown away. Beautiful beach grass everywhere, tons of amazing driftwood, and the snow capped Olympic Mountains in the background. I played around with several different shots and ultimately decided on this angle as it had the best balance between sky, rocks, driftwood, lighthouse and the colorful reflection of the setting sun. Just as the sun was going down, a ton of birds began to fly overhead as if they knew it was photo time. One even had his “landing gear” down which I thought was cool. Perhaps they were expecting crumbs… doh, maybe next time!

Disney – Partners With Castle Dream Lights – 7X HDR (Explored), originally uploaded by Express Monorail.
With its (up to) 9X EV bracketing, the D300 makes it easy to do an HDR image. This is my first attempt at a multiple exposure tone map, all my other HDR’s up to date have been from a single RAW or jpeg. Yeah, I know, nothing new here with the Dream Lights and Partners, but I don’t think I’ve seen it done in HDR yet. And part of the reason I wanted to do this in HDR is that it’s nearly impossible to get this exposure this way with a single file. In fact, it probably is impossible, save some SERIOUS post processing work. So there you have it, Cinderella Castle Dream Lights – 2008, in high dynamic range.

I’m still experimenting with HDR technology, and using the evaluation version of Photomatix, I created this image using a 9 exposure blend of shots 1 stop apart using the bracketing mode and a cable release. Created the HDR in Photomatix, then did the Tone Mapping, brought it into CS2 and blended it with Soft Light at about 20% and…
