I should like to thank all my readers for staying with me over my time as contributor to Hertstitch. I look forward to seeing others now take over the baton, as it were (is there a textile equivalent??).

The FoQ draw has been made and the two winners notified: I wish them a fabulous day out.

As a popular writer said….goodbye and thanks for all the fish!…… (which means something!)

Marion

A P.S. from hertstitch – I want to thank Marion for the excellent content she has regularly posted – the variety and quality have been impressive, informative, educational and, above all, enjoyable

Unless someone else steps up this will very probably be the last post here (unless I have a sudden urge to post anything) but the blog will remain as an archive – so you can come back anytime and browse or find information you spotted earlier

Thank you for your comments and contributions over the years

Nneka Jones: stitching social justice

In 2023 Nneka Jones had an exhibition at the Knitting and Stitch show. It was striking.

Textile Artist gives us some background. “Artist, activist and advocate, Nneka Jones draws on her Caribbean roots and cultural heritage to explore themes that are close to her heart. Speaking up for girls and women of colour, she creates painterly textile portraits that celebrate and empower – as well as advocate for their rights and social and environmental justice.

Nneka has combined her fine art experience with working more intuitively in thread. And it’s a winning combination. She reveals how she breaks down colour and tone into shapes before she begins stitching in sections, laying in different coloured threads. The result? Compelling and thought provoking textile art you won’t want to miss. If you have ever wanted to stitch portraits, or share a message with the world, Nneka Jones shares with us how she does it

Stitching into botanical magic!

Textile art introduces us to Caroline Nixon. Early in her art journey, Caroline found a passion for printing and dyeing fabrics but her health challenges prevented her from using chemical-based products. So, armed with her science background, she literally began foraging outdoors to discover what types of natural dyes surrounded her. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

Caroline focuses on natural dyes, eco-printing, hand stitch and repurposing. She grows many of the dye plants herself, mingled among the veggies in her garden. Read on at https://www.textileartist.org/caroline-nixon-stitching-into-botanical-magic/
