Mid-August Newsletter 2025

The days are beginning to get shorter, however the heat of summer can last into the first part of September. How long the summer heat lasts can vary from year to year. We can only wait and see what Mother Nature (or climate change) brings us. Although it still feels like summer, now is the time to start your fall gardens. Just remember that new plantings and especially containers need to be watered regularly when there has not been enough rain. Check your gardens daily during hot, dry weather and water when the top inch or two of soil is dry. Remember containers dry fast in the heat and may need water daily.

Fall Vegetable and Flower Plants are now available! Stop by to visit us regularly through fall and pick up plants to refresh your gardens and landscape beds. Enjoy fall colors in the displays throughout our Garden Center, Greenhouse and Nursery. Plus, take in some fresh outdoor air as you browse through all of our plant selections.

July 25, 2025 Hoffmann-Hillermann Newsletter

Hello Friends,

Shrubs, trees and more in a display on the Nursery Lot at Hoffmann-Hillermann Nursery and Florist - www.hoffmannhillermann.com.        July has gone by fast. The heavy rain and hot temperatures are hard on vegetable plants. Additionally, plants may have different reactions to pest and diseases treatments in high temperatures. Be sure to read product labels. Most products will include temperatures to avoid use – or recommend that you apply it at cooler times of the day. Early morning or early evening are better times to apply treatments during hot weather. Also be cautious with fertilizers that can burn plants in hot weather. Slow release and organic varieties are safer to use when temperatures are high. While some of your summer crops may be fading out, you can start planning and preparing for a fall garden. Remove spent plants in your vegetable garden and prepare an area to start seeds of fast-growing crops through the first week of August. Beets, greens, summer squash, radishes, carrots, beans and cucumbers all have quick growing varieties that mature in 60 days or less. These can be sown in late summer and harvested in a short time before the first fall frost arrives. Seed packets are available in our Garden Center.

Now is also a great time to plan your fall lawn and landscape projects. Fall will bring cooler weather and the opportunity for you to spend more time in your outdoor spaces. If you plan to work on some DIY projects as the weather cools down, create a list of supplies you will need. You can start getting the supplies now and stretch your costs out over several weeks instead of buying it all at once. Then you will be able to start your project as soon as the weather cools down with the supplies that you have ready to go. If you are interested in having us install a landscape project for you, now is a good time to call us so we can get it added to our schedule (636-239-6729, Ext. 602). Create or enhance your outdoor sanctuary!

July 3, 2025 Hoffmann-Hillermann Newsletter

Hello Friends,

Shrubs and trees on the Nursery Lot at Hoffmann-Hillermann Nursery and Florist - www.hoffmannhillermann.com. We had a rainy spring, but the hot dry days of summer have moved in. Be sure to water your gardens and new tree and shrub plantings regularly. Check your containers and hanging baskets daily. They dry out faster and may need to be watered once or twice daily depending on the location they are in and the amount of soil in their container. Stick your finger in the soil. Water the plant when the top inch or two of the soil is dry. Remember to check garden ponds and water features daily through summer and add water as needed. Keep bird baths filled to provide water for the wild birds. Visit us for a great selection of garden hoses, sprayers, sprinklers, and more to help you do your watering tasks more efficiently and faster.

Monitor your plants regularly for pests and disease issues. Spotting issues and treating them early is important. You want to keep the plant as healthy as possible, so it does not get too stressed. It will be harder to save once it becomes unhealthy. Read labels on treatment products to find out the best times to apply, and what temperature is too hot to apply some types of products. Diatomaceous Earth applied according to the instructions is a good option for controlling slugs and crawling insects. Insect and disease treatments need to be re-applied after a hard rain. Use only slow release or organic fertilizers according to the label to reduce chances of burning plants in the heat. Have a great summer!

Hello Friends,

We hope you are all having a good start to the spring season. We have a good selection of plants for your gardens and landscaping. Shipments have been coming in daily. Stop by for a visit and enjoy some time browsing through all our departments and displays. It’s the perfect way to slow down as you view all the beautiful plants and items.

We celebrate the businesses 74th Anniversary this April! The business started with modest beginnings in 1951 by founders Don and Bernie Hillermann. We are thankful to the founders and all the customers who visited and patronized the business over all these years. We are looking forward to another exciting spring season!

Spring is such a great time of year. It’s very exciting to see the trees and plants bud and grow new leaves. In addition, it is wonderful to get outside and dig up some soil to plant flower and vegetable gardens. However, you want to be sure and watch weather forecasts through mid-May. The average last frost for our area is around April 15, but we occasionally get a late frost in early May. If frost or freezing temperatures are forecasted, you can take precautions to protect new plantings and tender new growth on existing plants. Have some old sheets or other covering items handy in case you need to do a quick cover up. Click here for frost protection tips.

Hot Dog Saturdays are back and happening at the nursery now through May! Enjoy a Grilled Hot Dog at lunchtime on Saturdays in exchange for a charitable donation.
It’s going to be a great spring!

March 13, 2025 Hoffmann-Hillermann Newsletter

Hello Friends,

Spring starts soon on Thursday, March 20th! Now’s a good time to get started on early spring projects in your gardens, lawn and landscape beds. Read our March Top Tips article linked in the newsletter articles below to help remind you of what you can do this month to get a good start for spring. Now is the time to apply pre-emergent weed control to your lawn and gardens. Crabgrass Preventer needs to be applied in early spring before the weeds start to germinate – on lawns that will not be seeded or overseeded until at least 10 weeks after application. If you want to seed the lawn in spring, it is best to use a fertilizer only and no weed treatments until the grass is well established (grown enough to be mowed 3 times). Weed Out with fertilizer or spot treatments can be used in late spring on established turf. You can also use a pre-emergent treatment in garden and landscape beds where you will not be sowing seeds. Use a hoe or pull existing weeds, then apply the pre-emergent before adding a fresh layer of mulch. You can do these and other spring treatments yourself, or you can call us to do these and other maintenance services for your lawn, gardens and landscape beds. Call us at 636-239-6729 to schedule or learn more about our services.

New SPRING shipments of plants and items are arriving regularly. Stop by often and browse through our departments to see the new items and displays! We love to welcome returning and new spring visitors!

February 25, 2025 Hoffmann-Hillermann Newsletter

Hello Friends,

The days are getting longer, which means SPRING is getting closer! As the weather starts to feel more like early spring, take advantage of the days that you can comfortably work outside. You can clean up your beds and remove dead growth from the previous season. Cut most perennials to 3” above the ground; ornamental grass and hardy hibiscus can be cut to 6” above the ground. Remove damaged foliage, any old flower stalks and seed heads. To control Iris borer, clean up and destroy the old foliage before new growth begins. Avoid the urge to work up your garden soil too early. Tilling too early in the season, or when the soil is wet, can result in the soil becoming compacted and make it dry out too fast.

You can plan Deep Root Feeding treatments for your trees and shrubs into your schedule soon. The best time to do this is when trees are waking up from dormancy in the spring to provide extra nutrients. This treatment injects fertilizer into the ground at the roots and gives your trees added security to handle the stress of our different seasons and weather variations. This will help the plants get a good start before the harsh conditions of summer arrive. You can also plan a time to treat your established lawn and gardens with Pre-emergent Weed Treatments. Only use pre-emergent products in lawn and garden areas that you will not be sowing seeds. These products help keep seeds from germinating and reduce future weeds in the treated area. Weeds that are already rooted and growing are not affected and need to be removed by another method. We can help you with products for these treatments to do-it-yourself, or we can do it for you! Call us at 636-239-6729 or stop by and visit our Landscape Office to set up these or other Landscape and Lawn services.
