1. What do you see in the picture? Where is Icarus? What are the other figures in the picture? Why does the painter try to convey through the arrangement of the figures in the painting?

I see a farmer is going home. A shepherd is tending sheep. A kid is playing on thebeach. Icarus is in the sea near the ship. I think the painter try to convey the desire to flyof Icarus. But when he falls into the sea, nobody notice him. It means people won’taffect though Icarus falls down.

2. In your own words sum up what, according to the speaker (in lines 1-13), the Old Masters understood about human suffering. And who are the “Old Masters” that he refers to?

The Old Master refers to the painter.

Stinky Werther 01

1.    Werther says “That the life of man is but a dream is a thought which has occurred to many people, and I myself am constantly haunted by it” at the beginning of the letter written on May 22. What is he trying to tell us, we people everywhere? If Werther also see the life of man as a dream, does his dream of life have any difference from others’? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]     Maybe he wants to tell us life is just like a dream. Things is not decided by ourselves. But we can try to change them.    Yes. For example….They paint their prison walls with gaily colored figures and luminous prospects….etc.

2.       How does Werther think of children? Why does he think that the happiest people in the world are like children? [ Be sure to give evidences to strengthen your opinions.]      He thinks they are indeed happy creatures.      He think they live for the day only, drag around their dolls, putting their clothes on or off, tiptoe around the cupboard where Mummy keeps the sweets locked up, and, after having finally snatched the desired bit, stand with full cheeks and shout: “More!”  So, the happiest people in the world are like children. Just because kids can do the things what they want to do.       3.     What kind of person does Werther think he is? What are the characteristics of the young Werther you learn from the letter on May 22?

He thinks he is constantly haunted by the life of man is but a dream is a thought.

I think he is think too much. He is a stupid person. He is just a teenager. Why is he so always melancholy and moody? I don’t know how to describe him, and just think he is past redemption.

1. In Canto V of Inferno, those who are indulged in lust are sent to the second circle of hell, including Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra, Helen, Achilles, Paris, Tristan, Francesca and Paolo.  Choose ONE of the sinners lost in lust. Explain why Dante puts him/her into hell.

I choose Achilles because he has a desire to win all the war. So, I think he will go to the hell just because his appetence.

 2. Why is Dante moved to tears after Francesca’s description of love and why does he finally fall “as a dead body falls” after her personal account of her intimate relationship with Paolo?

Because Francesca fell in love with Caina, Paolo’s brother. In some cases love could be selfish, but the love between Francesca and Paolo was so inflexible they even died for it without regret. I think Dante cried because he is so touching.

3. From Dante’s presentation of Francesca and Paolo, we are encouraged to consider the place of moral responsibility in depictions of love, sex, and violence in our own day. We can certainly discuss music, television, movies, and advertising (as well as literature) in these terms. Who is more (or less) responsible and therefore accountable for unacceptable attitudes and behavior in society: the creators and vehicles of such messages or the consumers and audiences?

I think a couple who has relation problem is inadmissible in the past. But now, maybe it’s not a problem now! People accent that freedom to choose their spouse.
