The Ins and Outs of Publishing, A Directory of Advice. #Writing #Author #Advice

Okay, so it looks like I’m still getting a lot of publishing questions. These are recurrent questions I get on a regular basis, and while I want to try to respond to everyone who reaches out to me, I don’t want my blog becoming redundant. So I think I’m going to repost this on a weekly basis from now on to help people navigate the publishing world. I don’t really see another way around it.

So if you have questions regarding publishing, PLEASE check below to see if any of this helps you before reaching out. I’m always happy to help, but I may have already answered your question.

Publishing is a tough road to navigate. Please check out the links below. These are previous posts I’ve made about the ins and outs of publishing. They should be of assistance in your journey:

Am I Ready To Publish? This is a must read BEFORE even considering starting the process. I can’t tell you how many authors burned bridges by not being ready.

Editing… There is a Cost That Must be Paid… or is There? You can skip this one if you’ve already had your writing edited (by someone other than you!). However, I’d still recommend reading.

Getting Published… the basics… In this post, we explore traditional publishing vs. self-publishing. Here you’ll get the pros on cons of each and the steps you need to go through in order to be successful in either.

Finally…

Copyrighting my Writing. Am I Protected? This isn’t required reading… however, if you’re concerned about plagiarism, or in the future may need to file a copyright claim, I recommend giving it a read.

Feeling overwhelmed yet? I’d be surprised if you didn’t. The only sage advice I can offer you other than the documents above is simple…

  1. Do not give up. A million “No’s” suddenly become irrelevant if you get that one “yes”.
  2. People will tell you that everyone and their mother wants to publish a book. You’re up against insurmountable odds and a flooded market. This is false. You’re not up against everyone and their mother. Permit me the luxury and I’ll prove this mathematically: First of all, take the entire group of people who want to get published. Now take that number and reduce it by roughly 60%. You just eliminated all the people who want to get something published, but don’t have the time, ability, drive, or inspiration to write. Next, eliminate another 20%. You’ve now taken down all the people who can put pen to paper but can’t afford the time/money to put the work into advertising and getting published. Eliminate another 10% who can’t take criticism and thus aren’t going to be able to get their writing properly edited. Now eliminate another 5% either don’t have the patience for or get discouraged by receiving a series of “No’s” from publishers.
Now take that last 5% and eliminate all of them, except you. Why? Because they’re irrelevant. You have your writing and they have there’s. Whether or not you get published and how successful you are isn’t about other people’s writing. Yes, in the end, it’s you against one person, you. Whether or not I’ll ever get to buy your book off the shelf depends on you; how much time, effort, and funds you’re willing to put into your writing. So make it good!

Let’s open it up to the floor. Readers, do you have any publishing advice for our friend here? Let her know in the comments!

Drakin, Tar’Mortha Eternal? #Writing #Fantasy #SciFi

Hello all,

Welcome back! Let’s dive right in.
(OBLIGATORY SPOILER ALERT HERE)

“Dear Jim,
Can you go into a little bit more of Tar’Mortha? How is she able to exist without food or water for so long?
Thanks,
Lindsey”

Oooo… that’s a very good question. A VERY good question. Here’s the thing you have to understand about Tar’Mortha, she’s existed for over ten thousand years. That’s significantly longer than even the lifespans of the average elder dragon. What’s more, she was gifted with enhanced telekinetic abilities. Not only is she able to partition her mind to create illusionary beings with their own thoughts and feelings that she… can’t exactly control, but can watch and influence. Her prowess gave her the ability to slow her own aging and degradation, as well as increase her overall size. I don’t really cover this in the book, but even on Drakiur, the planet would not be able to sustain a creature of her immense size. It would be an ecological nightmare. This meant that Tar’Mortha had to seek other means of sustaining herself. She discovered a way to essentially ingest energy in other forms; primarily radiation from the sun. Unfortunately, because of the sun of our world is so much different from the red one around their’s, she was unable to get the same nourishment she needed. Thus she remained encased in ice, not only keeping her hidden, acting as a puppet master behind the scenes, but also slow her degradation, however much possible until she could find another source of nourishment.

Hope that answers your question!

Readers, if you liked the book, please take a moment and leave me a quick review or if you’re pressed for time, some simple stars will suffice!! I wouldn’t ask, but the more exposure my book gets, the more copies it sells. Word of mouth is everything in this business! Thanks so much, all! I greatly appreciate it!

Drakin, Drakaeic Biology? #Writing #Fantasy #SciFi

Hello all,

Welcome back! Let’s dive right in.

So the next question I got was to dive a little bit more into the biology of the dragon race.

(OBLIGATORY SPOILER ALERT HERE:)

If you have not read past An Empire of Ashes, you may want to skip this piece.

So we have people asking how it is possible for humans and dragons to conceive a child. This is nothing new, half-dragon children have appeared in other fantasy stories, but I guess this question came up when I tried to explain how it could happen with two species that… admittedly, should be incompatible.

Well let’s remember that the entire basis for the series surrounded a half-dragon character named Raiya. Yes, she was a freak of nature that technically shouldn’t have been possible. However, because of the aggressive dragon immune system, drakaeic DNA did manage to impregnate a human woman.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room first. Leaving out copulation, how can a dragon and a human even mate without the human becoming infected. The answer to that part is quite simple; evolution. The vaccine that Dr. Castillo created worked better than anyone ever expected… arguably too well. The vaccine used a weakened dragon DNA to create immunity in the human body. Because of the nature of the vaccine, it only required one dose to create complete immunity. After a few generations of vaccination, natural immunity took over and human DNA had been altered so that human cells were no longer susceptible to the dragon immune system. However, it had an unexpected result; the human genome was forever altered.

Let’s talk about the dragon side of things. Almost immediately, dragons were having trouble adjusting to our atmosphere. The nitrogen-oxygen in our air was slightly different from that on the Drakeas home-world. Not only that, but our yellow sun emitted different rays from the red giant that dragons were used to. The end result of this was immune-compromised dragons, stillborn children, among other issues.
Now, in most science fiction dealing with creatures on a world that is different from Earth, the colonies often fail because human biology is quite fragile. Either they quickly become ill and die from their biology being unable to adapt to the new environment, or contract some kind of disease that ravages the entire colony. (Think the Native Americans when diseases from Europe were introduced.)
This is not the case with dragons. Dragon biology is far more resistant as their evolution is far beyond that of humans being an extremely ancient race by comparison. As such, their biology is able to adapt and “evolve” over the generations to be able to handle our world. Qira is the first example of this. The first gen dragons look considerably different from others; hairy manes instead of bony spikes, reduced maturity size, and softer skin. What’s more, their internal biology started to change as well.

Finally, let’s talk about dragon mating rituals. It’s quite a bit different from humans. As mentioned in the books, when a dragon reaches maturity, and becomes enamored with a partner, intense emotions, coupled with physical contact, trigger what they refer to as ‘imprinting’. Essentially, a dragon’s biology becomes more in-tune with their mate. both dragons biology alter to make mating more likely to produce healthy offspring. In addition to that, dragons become more in tune with their partner on an emotionally level, able to sense their partner’s feelings. This comes with certain risks. If, after the imprinting is complete, the pair does not mate, the effects in the best of cases will be painful, lasting throughout the dragon’s life, or at worst, can be lethal. This becomes even more of a problem when a dragon imprints on a human. Because a human doesn’t go through the same process, a dragon’s internal biology changes far more radically. In most cases, for many generations, rendered the dragon infertile.

So the question was about conceiving a child. Well, take the alterations of the vaccine in humans, the environmentally-triggered evolution in dragons, as well as the changes which result from imprinting, and eventually,  thanks to all these factors, dragons and humans become biologically compatible. Now, we only see this going one way, human male, dragon female. Now, it is ASSUMED that it could work the other way, but I don’t really go into that. It’s not impossible though.

In any case, I sincerely hope that this helps answer some of the questions surrounding what’s going on with Joaquim and Nayeli.

Drakin, A Question? #Writing #Fantasy #SciFi

Hello all,

As always, when it comes to new readers, new questions come about, and boy have I been getting some good ones. I reply to those emails, typically, directing them here. Because I figure if one person has a question, chances are more people have questions. I do my best to answer ALL my fan mail (God help me), so let’s get started. I’ll try to post once a day where possible.

Anyway, let’s start tackling the questions. The first one that popped up was about Qira, because of course it did! She is both my blessing and my bane. LOL! All right, so I’ll just say this right now, we’re going to have SPOILERS! So if you haven’t read past The Orphans of Haven, stop, don’t go any further!

The question from the reader was regarding Qira’s encounter with Radley in Cataclysm Protocol: Red. Did she actually see Radley’s ghost? Was it actually him or a fever dream, and who was the powerful being responsible if it was him? There was some speculation that it was Taryn. However, let’s remember that Taryn had just realized a few weeks earlier that she was connected to the dread lord. Her powers were still very much dormant.

So was it him? Was he actually there? That’s up to you to decide. I intentionally left that ambiguous. Among my goals of escapism and creating a story that everyone from all walks of life can enjoy, I also like to give my readers some leeway to figure things out on their own.

Do you think it was Taryn? Then it was Taryn.

Do you think that because dragons have a bit of extrasensory perception and can sense the residual spiritual energy of those who have past, so she was able to see him? That’s pretty cool, go with that.

Do you think it was a fever dream? Sure, that works too.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have no answer to give you. I want my readers to form their own conclusions. Using your imagination is so important and it is something that is being regrettably lost in this day and age. I believe we call it ‘Head Canon’, which I am fully in support of!

Anyway, I hope this helps! (Probably not, but at least you have an answer!)

Drakin, The Rule of One Status Update!!! #Writing #Fantasy #SciFi

Hello all!

I’m sorry to report, but Drakin: Rule of One will not be released on time.

While the hardcover release looks like it’s going smoothly, the ebook and paperback are being inexplicably blocked by Amazon. We don’t know why. None of us have received emails explaining the situation.

Unfortunately, Amazon customer support has been absolutely useless. In essence, if we’re not getting their emails (yes, we checked all company spam folders and backups) it’s our problem and there is nothing they can do. Their content teams will not reach out directly except over email.

That is extremely poor service and frankly, if this type of lack of responsiveness is to become the norm… I don’t want to be party to it. As such, we’ll be switching our books to another service. We’re going to start with Rule of One and go from there. This will take time and I will let you all know as soon as it can be released.

This is my book, so the buck stops with me, and I apologize for the delay. I will let you know as soon as I get the book out!

Catch you on the flip side, readers!

Qira’s Gone, But Her Spirit Lives On. Please, stop asking!! #Writing #Author #Advice

Hello all!

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about the last book and whether or not Qira will be back, and when I say back, I mean ressurected. This isn’t really a spoiler as I’ve said this in the past, she’s dead. She sacrificed herself for the world she loves, the one she wanted to build, and that’s that.

However, as I thought more about it, I’m starting to realize that these questions are indicative of a much larger issue in literature, specifically around fantasy… Disney, Marvel, DC, Netflix, and a huge swath of others have taken the finality and impactfulness out of death.

I remember when I was a child. We read Bridge to Terebithia in 5th grade. That was really the first time I experienced death of a character in a story in an impactful way. Yes, I’d experienced Bambi’s mom, Old Yeller, et al long before that, but this was the first time it was really unexpected and shocking. I remember that to this day, and I still remember how shocked I was. That’s the impact something like death SHOULD produce. It’s final, it’s tragic, and it’s life-altering to those who experience the loss.

Unfotunately, that sensation has been all but lost in our media. There is no permanency, no “perma-death”, nothing. This is nothing new. You can go back to Lord of the Rings, or even further, and Gandalf is brought back to life after his herioc sacrifice. Unfortunately, that has really become the norm.

Let me put it another way. What was THE most impactful story in comicbook history back in the 70s-80s? No doubt you can think of a couple, but for me… It’s the Phoenix Saga. Why? Because back then, the story ended with a passing of the torch. The original idea was that original X-Men characters would be aged out and replaced. It started with Marvel Girl sacrificing herself to save her friends and kill the Phoenix entity, and then Cyclops walking away. Storm took over leadership of the team, being a somewhat newer character, and Marvel Girl was to be replaced with Kitty Pryde. The New Mutants were slowly going to replace the existing X-Men team as they retired.

Then the mid-80s rolled around and all of that went out the window as the likes of Claremont and others handed the franchise over to arguably inferior storytellers. The damage was done, and since then, pretty much every single character that has ever been killed off has been brought back. There is no finality in any of it. Marvel Girl came back, Colossus’ sister came back, everyone has been ressurected, reborn, or brought over from another reality.

Sadly, that’s had a profound effect on today’s readers. Death doesn’t seem to faze them anymore because they know that a character can, and likely will, be brought back. It’s unfortunate, but it is the reality and I really hope that this eventually changes.

In any case, I’m absolutely thrilled that Qira has become such a beloved character, I truly am. However… I’m sorry, she’s gone, and she’s not coming back.

Thanks readers!

Drakin: The Story of Raiya

Book Synopsis:

“Abomination, freak, monster…”  You get used to names like these when you have yellow eyes, horns, and scales, but Raiya could have really cared less.

After being forced into exile because of her appearance, Raiya’s mind has been focused on one goal; hunting down the dragon lord that killed her parents. For over thirty years, humanity has been locked in a struggle for survival against a race of dragons that had fallen from the heavens. They took everything from her and consumed the planet in a fierce war. Humanity’s numbers are quickly dwindling, leaving her few options in the way of allies.

What she doesn’t know is that her journey will strike at the very heart of the Red War and uncover truths about her past that she may not want to know. Can she finish what she started while coming to terms with the truths of her origin

Drakin: The Orphans of Haven

Book Synopsis:

The Red War may be over, but not all wounds have healed. For Sergeant Radley Zall, the nightmares never end. After years of struggling for survival, he finds himself in a dead end job, deporting wayward dragons to the Exclusion Zone. The horrors of his past have left him a broken man, slowing killing himself in a bottle of whiskey. It’s a wearying existence that many former soldiers have been subject to since the war ended, but for Radley, that is all about to change. Throughout his life, Radley’s hatred of dragons has been unmatched until one evening when a small one shows up on his doorstep. The pathetic creature is emaciated and begging for shelter. Her appearance reminds him of his younger self, compelling him to help her. That uncharacteristic decision forces him to confront his past actions— some of which may have contributed to a sinister plot to reignite the Red War and wipe out the few remaining dragons on Earth.

DRAKIN: Tale of a Frozen Heart

Book Synopsis:

War always comes with consequences, many of which are not immediately apparent. The remaining dragons were allowed to integrate into human society, despite many underlying tensions. A recently discovered ability that makes dragons appear more humanlike has helped move things along. However, not everything is as peaceful as it seems. Asher Cole is attending his final year in one of the many integrated high schools. Life is relatively mundane until he crosses paths with Taryn, a green-eyed girl who does nothing but make his life difficult. They wind up stuck working together on a science project. As he works with her, it becomes apparent that there is more to her than meets the eye. A dark secret that even she doesn’t know could threaten the fledgling peace. Taryn’s dreams become haunted by a malevolent entity that is hell-bent on destroying her. Ash is in a race to save them both before they both lose their sanity. If he fails, she will not have the strength to prevent this unknown evil from wreaking havoc on the world.

DRAKIN: An Empire of Ashes

Book Synopsis:

Two hundred years have passed, and the Red War has become a distant memory for most. Dragons and humans now live together in peace… but one powerful woman who has been deranged by her own history unleashes her vengeance on a helpless population.

Now, the world’s only hope for survival rests with Kaori, a naïve and wayward princess of the Eastern Empire. Having been disillusioned with her mother’s rule, she discovers a dark secret about her family that will change the course of history forever. She soon crosses paths with Nayeli and Joaquim, a pair of rogues living within her borders.

Their fight for survival takes an unexpected turn as a shadow of from the past reveals that the situation is more dangerous than they know. The fate of billions of lives rests on these three unlikely companions putting aside their differences to stand against the world.

DRAKIN: The Butcher’s Endsong

Book Synopsis:

The most difficult enemy to fight is often oneself, their past, and guilt.
Sgt. Petra Penkrav came to learn this the hard way. After serving the Empire loyally for several years, she gets transferred to a new post, guarding a camp where dragons and dissidents are in protective custody… or so the imperial propaganda says.
Petra quickly realizes this new posting is not an internment camp at all. It’s a death camp, and her job is to oversee the execution of its inhabitants. After watching a large group of dragons die, she resigns. Attempting to leave the horrors behind, she settles into a mundane existence on her family’s farm.
Her hope to live in obscurity is short-lived when an enemy soldier appears at her doorstep, desperate to save the woman he loves. Hoping to gain some level of forgiveness for her crimes, she agrees to help and sets out on a journey that will forever change the course of history. The only question is whether that history will remember her as a hero or a war criminal.

Drakin, is this it? #Writing #Fantasy #SciFi

Hello all,

So I got a few emails, all asking the same question. Is this it? Will “Rule of One” be the final chapter in the Drakin series?

Yes.

The truth of the matter is that this series went on a lot longer than I had intended. Originally, I had only intended to write a trilogy. The original series was supposed to be, simply The Story of Raiya, Nylie’s Tears, and An Empire of Ashes. Well, obviously things didn’t work out quite like that. Nylie’s Tears became The Orphans of Haven, which, when I started writing the book, I had no idea that it was going to become what it became. That book took on a life of its own and became something far beyond what I had originally imagined.

That should have been an indicator for what was going to happen with the rest of the series. After writing those three novels, I felt like there was so much more to say. Qira’s story wasn’t done. I wanted to explain more about how she went from being a naive dragon girl to a legendary and much beloved senator in the UPW.

So I added three more books, then went back, took a look, and decided that I didn’t want to end the story on The Butcher’s Endsong, so I went to work on one more. Since even before Raiya, I have been delivering a new book almost every year for the past 13 years! This has been a labor of love that I have thoroughly enjoyed for a very long time, but all good things have to come to an end.

Does this mean I’m done writing? Probably not. You may see me pop up with a new book in the works in a few years. You may find me doing a Drakin offshoot. Never say never. The main storyline, however, is done. I’ve wrapped everything up and the main characters that are still with us can live their lives. Honestly, this is me pretty much saying I need a break. I’ve delivered 13 stories, one a year while working full time and raising a family. It takes a lot out of you to be able to balance all three.

To my readers, words cannot begin to express my gratitude, especially for those of you who have stuck it out with me since the beginning. You all rock and I’ve loved getting, and responding to, fanmail and questions about canon along the way. It’s been an absolutely amazing journey, one that shouldn’t be over any time soon.

So with that, I will see you all again soon. I am so excited to release Drakin to you next week! It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

Cheers!
