:: Creative Commons ::

I believe all of you have come across some symbols like below :

download-2

images

I pretty believe you guys know what each symbol means. Well the first one with the capital R symbolizes ‘registered’ while the second one symbolizes ‘copyright’.

The registered trademark symbol (®) is a symbol that provides notice that the preceding word or symbol is a trademark or service mark that has been registered with a national trademark office.

The © symbol, or the word “Copyright” or abbreviation “Copr.”; the year of first publication of the copyrighted work; and. an identification of the owner of the copyright, either by name, abbreviation, or other designation by which they are generally known.

So, in this very post, I am going to share what I know about Creative Commons.

According to my understanding, this Creative Commons is kinda of license that enable free distribution of a copyrighted work. It is used when the author/creator wants to give other people the right to share, use or even build upon a work that they have created or done. In the other words, it means like the author/creator will not sue other people that share or use their product.

For me, this is kind of awesome ! Creative Commons can help us legally share our idea and knowledge with people around. Below is the symbol of creative common :

Thus, whenever you come across this symbol, please feel free to share anything that you feel good and beneficial. There’s no harm at all 🙂

:: Open Learning Tutorial ::

So in order for us to complete our TEAL as an online course, Madam Rose (read it as Dr.Rose) set a tutorial session for us. Yesterday, Dr.Shukri came to our class and he gave kinda tutorial on our MOOC.

We focused on our developing-course which is the TEAL. First of all, we were all invited and appointed as the administrators for the course. This was done to make it easier for us to edit or update or even add anything in the course content.

According to Dr.Shukri, the idea of MOOC is having free online school, so we really need a team to administer the students. That’s why he added the whole class to be the administrator of our TEAL. Moreover, we have our own part to be completed together with the UG students. During the tutorial too, we have been briefly explained about how to create our course synopsis, learning outcomes as well as the course units and activities which appear to be really important.

All the inputs that we got from the tutorial were really beneficial. Surely it will help us in our developing phase. Pictures below were taken for documentation purpose 🙂

We came out with a storyboard for our course introductory video.

We came out with a storyboard for our course introductory video.

And of course, we sent it to our 'boss' ;-)

And of course, we sent it to our ‘boss’ 😉

Thank you so much Dr.Shukri for the sharing ! We really appreciate it and insyaALLAH we are going to give our best for this project.

:: Class Trip – PUTRA MOOC Studio ::

Hello all !

So today, instead of having class at the kuliyyah, we went to UPM. Departed around 8:45am, we were welcomed by the officers at CADe (Center of Academic Development) upon reaching there. They have a very beautiful building I must say, with a very nice meeting room and such convenience toilet. HA HA HA ~

Alright let’s get back to the gist of the trip. Well for this course, we are required to develop an online course. We are asked to develop a MOOC with its name ‘Technology-Enhanced Active Learning‘ (TEAL) In order for us to complete the task, Madam Rose planned a class trip for all of us to UPM because they are the pioneer of MOOC in Malaysia. In addition, they have their own MOOC studio too. how awesome is that omg ! So, some sharing session regarding MOOC stuff would really help us in our

As for the first agenda, the Director of CADe, Prof Dr. Mohd Majid Konting briefed us about MOOC and its development. For your information, UPM is the first public university to launch MOOC. PUTRA MOOC was launched on April 7th 2014 by our Minister of Education II during that time. It was really interesting you know, to know everything from scratch. And we too, learnt something form that very brief story. I’ll story at the end of this post okay 🙂

photo_2016-10-11_11-54-03

Basically enough, there are 3 basic components that are to have in MOOC which are :

  • content
  • platform
  • infrastructure

Without these 2 vital elements, MOOC will never be perfect. I remembered what one of the officials said upon presenting the Putra MOOC Development. He said that there are 2 kinds of MOOC. Either curriculum-based or life-long learning. So for our TEAL, it is a life-long learning. Life-long learning can be defined as “all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment-related perspective”. Compared to curriculum-based, life-long learning course is not that rigid if we are about to create one because the syllabus is not fixed.

As for the organization to develop the MOOC, the team is divided into 3 categories of roles. Below are the graphic : slide1

For our TEAL, we just have the same basic of organization too.

slide2

Of course our Project Manager will be our beloved lecturer. We, as the postgraduate will be working on the content while we will have the undergraduate students to support us technically. I believe the final product will be very satisfying because we have our dear brothers and sisters from UG class to help us !

pm

I believe PUTRA MOOC is being very clear about its objective.

According to Prof. Majid, MOOC is all about upgrading blended learning through flipped classroom. In the other words,

Face to Face + Online Learning = MOOC

Of course I do agree with the idea. Other than that, one of the officers also shared some thoughts about developing the MOOC. First of all, upon developing the content or lecture notes to be put into the online course, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is better than write-up. Such long write-up can appear to be very boring among the learners or participants. Even me, I do not really prefer myself to read all the lecture notes. Moreover, it is important to come out with something that would catch the interest of people. Your materials, activities or even content should be interesting enough especially in the way you deliver/conduct it online. For example, the usage of video-graphic or even info-graphic instead of dull points on slides.

After the session in the meeting room, all of us were brought to their MOOC studio. The studio was totally awesome ! Though they are using kinda expensive and complex system, I think the investment are all worth it.

photo_2016-10-11_11-51-31-2 photo_2016-10-11_11-51-42 photo_2016-10-11_11-51-51 photo_2016-10-11_11-51-58 photo_2016-10-11_11-52-11

Alright let’s come back to what I’ve said earlier in the post, about the thing I’ve learnt most form this visit. I was really interested to one of the thing that Prof. Majid told us. It was about ideas and strategies. Both things actually are dependent to each other if we want things to really work. For example, we have the idea of developing MOOC yet we don’t have the expertise or good strategies. Things won’t really work then. Other party can easily hijack our idea if they have sufficient expertise and good strategies to work with. That makes sense right ? And yes, ideas and strategies should come with a package if we want to work on something.

I must say we’ve learnt a lot from this class visit. As the PUTRA MOOC has their own strategy on developing their MOOC, we also have ours. I remembered what Madam Rose said about ADDIE and we are going to stick to that in order to develop our TEAL.

:: MOOC – English in the Media (UNIMAS)

I always have this one thought that knowledge should be shared and free for others.
How about you ?

download (4)

I’ve posted something about MOOC once in this blog so you can refer here. So, there are many platforms that offer MOOC. For examples :

For a trial purpose, I signed up an account at OpenLearning and joined one of the courses there. I took a course developed by UNIMAS. It was English in the Media. Basically enough, there are  6 main units in this course, which will be covered in 7 weeksFor each unit, there are three important parts:

  1. Learning Materials with
  2. DigDeeper (additional resources),  and also
  3. Activities.

Just like the other MOOC courses, I am encouraged to spend sufficient time to browse through the lecture videos as well as participating in the given activities and follow up with the extra reading materials. I believe this is a self-paced mode so this course should be very flexible for me considering me myself as a full-time masters student 🙂

I always have passion in English and media is something we cannot run from. We come into newspapers/online news, magazines and even advertisements/brochures everyday. So, by being exposed with the various writing styles, I am certainly sure that this course can help me building my language knowledge and skills in English.

I like the introductory video in the beginning very much. Instead of participants reading the course outline, this course has came out with a very simple sweet video, briefly telling what English in the Media is all about. Below is the video ~~~

Dear readers, I’m here just to share my experience going through the course. Who knows perhaps this post might give you such insight about online courses (^_^)

First of all, all the lectures for each units were in the form of video. There were no slides or written notes provided for each units. Furthermore, for every units, proposed dates to complete each units were given. This might help the participants to plan their learning, considering their other commitments. I do like the initiative they’ve made by putting videos as the learning materials. At least for people like me who easily get bored of reading notes, this would be interesting. Though I cannot physically met the instructor, the lecture video with the instructor giving lectures made me feel like I was in the class, listening the lecture. The feeling being in class was there.

Before starting every new unit, the expected objectives and learning outcomes are mentioned in bullets form. This made me aware of what should I focused on before watching every lecture videos. There were unit quiz too for the activity. Unfortunately, I realized that there were some units that have no quiz as the activity.

We have quiz for unit 3 :-)

We do have quiz for unit 3 🙂

we have no quiz for unit 4 :-(

We have no quiz for unit 4 😦

I’m not sure whether the particular unit needs no activity or the admins haven’t set-up any just yet. For me, it would be better if all the units were set with a quiz at least so that participants can test their understanding about the particular unit learnt.

So I tried one of the quizzes ~~

So I tried one of the quizzes ~~

... and here's the result !

… and here’s the result !

To avoid kind of one way interaction of the participants, this online course also prepared another activity apart of the quiz in order to make the the learning enjoyable. One of the activities was as below :

'Snap & Identify'

‘Snap & Identify’

I've submitted mine !

I’ve submitted mine !

Another thing I like about this course was it had this one section of additional resource or DigDeeper. This can be really helpful and useful for participants to get additional input about the subject matter. But, this section only appeared in unit 1 and 2. Maybe the coordinators will update it by time. I like this section because it made us think and we are allowed to give our own views about the respected video/materials. After giving our opinions, we will then get respond from the admins/instructors. Isn’t that sounds good ?

wr

DigDeeper

All in all, I am very satisfied with this course on MOOC. Indirectly, it teaches me that it is not necessary for one to have kind of face-to-face class interaction in order to learn something or taking any course. As well, eventhough the particular course is not offered at our university, it doesn’t mean that we are losing that knowledge for the whole life. Technology do help. Where there is a will, there should be a way.

Everything’s better with friends. I’m inviting you to join the course. Give it a shot peeps ! Choose any course based on your interest and get it online. Go for MOOC ! After all, there’s no harm in trying yet you lose nothing for sure.

:: EDpuzzle ::

download (1)

Recently, I discovered a wonderful site. EDpuzzle is a site that allows users to select a video and customize it by editing, cropping, recording audio, and adding questions to make an engaging presentation or lesson.

In the other words, EDpuzzle is a new innovative site that lets you take just about any video off the web, edit it down to the portions you want, add audio notes and questions for students, and create virtual classrooms where you can monitor individual student work.

images

Guess what – IT’S FREE !

I found out that this site would be very useful for teachers in order to boost the classroom engagement with the students. I mean like, there will be times that students will get bored with the worksheets or even copy pasting the questions from the board to their workbooks. So, EDpuzzle can be one of the platforms to improve students’ learning through video. Besides, students will surely enjoy the online video and answer interactive questions pertaining to the lesson. They can get an immediate response as to whether or not they are answering the question correct or wrong.  If one does not get a question right he/she will be able to go back and rewatch that section of the video for more clarification before moving on to the remainder of the lesson.

As for the teachers, they can quickly see who has watched a video assignment, what time they watched it and how many questions they answered correctly. This will surely helps the teacher in evaluating the students’ mastery in the particular topic or lesson learnt.

Here are the simple steps for teachers to use EDpuzzle :

  1. Sign-up at the website.
  2. Choose your role as a teacher.
  3. Choose any online video or you can even upload one.
  4. You can decide to insert your own audio notes, narrate over the video, and best of all insert questions at any point in the video to create quizzes multiple choice or short answer quizzes for your students.
  5. Once done, you can assign the assignment to your class/students or even make it public.

Here, I’ve created one. Please feel free to give a shot 🙂

What can I conclude is that EDpuzzle can provide teachers with such great way to edit videos to ensure students are fully engaged during their lessons in the classroom. The easy-to-use features can be mastered in only a short time, and students can greatly benefit from the enhanced lesson videos created by their teachers.

:: Life-Long Learning ::

Being a teacher doesn’t simply mean you are going to just teach. Actually, you are learning too in the same time. Teaching the students in the class doesn’t simply mean you are the only one who are ‘giving’ and the students are just ‘taking’.

Have you ever wonder what ‘give and take’ actually means ?

download

Well I’ll leave it up to you guys 🙂

So, what is life-long learning ?

Lifelong learning is the “ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated” pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.

download (1)

Are you going to stop to learn ? If you have achieved your ambition, will you stop learning ?

Okay you are a teacher now. Yes. You are teaching the students. The students are learning from you. Does that mean you are going to stop yourself from chasing the knowledge ? Are you going to just stop ?

Trust me, you are not going anywhere with that. You have your own job. You get your salary every month. Yes, you are already in your comfort zone. But remember, nothing ever grows in the comfort zone.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not asking you teachers to pursue your masters or ph.D in your major. I’m not pleading you guys to attend official class that relates to your major. And I’m not forcing you guys to stop teaching and further your studies abroad. Whatever area you’re in, your knowledge will never be sufficient. You will always be a learner who learns about something new everytime.

Knowledge is Power.

ALLAH S.W.T gave human being ability to create knowledge. In order for us to perform the responsibility as khalifah, knowledge is a need. And as for you to know, any education activities can be considered islamic because you can satisfy God.

images🙂

Knowledge is power and every of us carry the responsibility to spread the knowledge. Nowadays, there are plenty of ways to share our views, opinions, and even knowledge with the whole wide world. Back then, we do have this gap of technology where teaching and learning will only take place physically. But with the technologies today, teaching and learning can occur virtually.

Have you ever heard of MOOC ?

download (3)

MOOC is an acronym for Massive Open online Course. It is actually a course of study made available over the Internet without charge to a very large number of people and of course, everybody can access it for FREE !

I’m not going to tell you in details about this MOOC thingy but I found it to be very useful for each and every of us. You can have the access to learn some of the subjects or courses that are from other universities or other countries for free. I’ve checked and join in some of the subjects and found them to be very interesting and beneficial.

I believe that knowledge should be shared. So here, I’m going to put some links so that you guys can have an overview about MOOC. In Malaysia, we are using OpenLearning as our MOOC platform.

What you just need to do is sign up for the page. Once done, you can search for the courses that you are interested with. Join them ! There will be modules uploaded as well as forums and discussions you to interact with each other. You are going to learn a lot, I promise 😉

Dear all,

You are not going to lose anything if you decide to continue learning. Our knowledge will never be sufficient. Getting to know some other new thing is actually fun. But bear this in mind that, learning is not only restricted to academic concept. You can always go beyond that !

🙂 🙂 🙂

:: Kahoot ! ::

Hello readers :*

Have you ever heard about ‘gamification‘ ? Yes obviously it derives from the word ‘game‘. So, what does gamification means ?

By definition, “gamification”  is the use of gamemechanics, dynamics, and frameworks to promote desired behaviors, has found its way into domains likemarketing, politics, health and fitness, with analysts predicting that it will become a multi-billion dollar industry by 2015 (MacMillan, 2011).

Gamification, defined as the use of gamemechanics, dynamics, and frameworks to promote desired behaviors, has found its way into domains likemarketing, politics, health and fitness, with analysts predicting that it will become a multi-billion dollar industry by 2015 (MacMillan, 2011).

GAMIFICATION is the use of game design and mechanics to enhance non-game contexts.

So let’s relate this to our education context.

How can I gamify education in my classroom ?

Let’s throwback. *get into time machine*

Once you were a student back then, were you attracted to games ? Instead of traditional chalk and talk by the teacher, would you prefer the teacher to conduct games or activities during the class session ?

Well, I don’t know about others but I enjoyed the activities and games more ! I was a student who will easily get bored. I always fall asleep in class. HAHAHA ! For me, it’s a nature anyway for kids or students to enjoy playing games and activities. Back then, my teacher used to conduct simple games like ‘Simon Says’. And during my practicum days, I did conduct some activities and game with my students like ‘Bingo’ and many more. They enjoyed the class session very much. At least, the students learnt something rather than just listen to the lecture without we, the teachers know whether they understand the subject taught or not.

Here, I found 4 ways to bring gamification in the classroom.

  • Gamify grading
  • Award student with badges
  • Integrate educational video games into your curriculum
  • Stir up a little competition

credit source : http://blog.tophat.com/4-ways-to-gamify-learning-in-your-classroom/

It is undeniable that games, in any form, can increase motivation through engagement. Nowhere else is this more important than education. You know, when there’s element of competition, everybody will be mentally challenged. It is going to be obvious that everybody want to WIN !

download (1)

By the way, students LOVE to be challenged.

In case you don’t realize, games somehow can make every of your students feel important. But how ? INVOLVEMENT. Yes. By involving with the games of activities that you conduct.

If your school or classroom has a very good internet connection and computers for the students to assess, I would really love to recommend to use these 2 medium in your teaching, that focus on the gamification elements.

  1. Kahoot !
  2. Socrative

As for today, I want to share my experience of using Kahoot ! during one of my classes here 🙂

Kahoot ! is a free game-based learning platform that makes it fun to learn – any subject, in any language, on any device, for all ages ! A Kahoot is a collection of questions on specific topics. Created by teachers, students, business-people and social users, they are asked in real-time, to an unlimited number of “players”, creating a social, fun and game-like learning environment.

Currently, there are 3 types of Kahoot !

Currently, there are 3 types of Kahoot !

1. Quiz

This is the most common type of Kahoot, epitomising our game-based approach to blended learning. There is no limit to the number of questions in a quiz. Each question can have an associated picture or video, and 2 – 4 multiple choice answers. There must be at least one correct answer (but more can be chosen), and the time-limit for each question can be individually set from 5 seconds to 2 minutes.

Aside from being a great way to engage and focus a whole room of people, quizzes can be used to formatively assess the knowledge of each individual in the room, and adapt their learning accordingly. They can be used to track progress of individuals over time, and inspire learners to enquire further by creating their own quizzes.

Players answer questions displayed at the front of the room on their personal device, motivated to answer correctly and score the most points. The faster someone answers a question correctly, the more points they get. The top 5 highest points scorers are displayed on the leaderboard at the front in-between each question, and the ultimate winner is shown at the end. Results, including who answered what for each question, can be downloaded afterwards.

2. Discussion (previously ‘Quick poll’)

Discussions are designed to do exactly what they say – facilitate a conversation. They are simply one quick question with no right or wrong answer, which can have an associated picture or video and 2 – 4 alternative answers. They should be used to gather opinions on current affairs, divisive topics, or even ask “what shall we do today?”.

Once again, players answer the question on their personal device. There is still a time-limit to answer within, however no points are involved. The collective results of the question are displayed at the front, acting as the basis for the discussion.

3. Survey

There are no limits to the number of questions in a survey. Each question can have an associated picture or video, and 2 – 4 multiple choice answers – however there are no right or wrong answers. They are just like traditional surveys except questions are asked in real-time to those present who answer on their personal devices. The results of each question can be debated there-and-then, and all survey results can be downloaded at the end.

As for educational purpose, I would like to recommend for the teachers to use the ‘Quiz’. Here, teacher can create questions on their own for the students to answer. Surely it must be based on the English lesson. Like me, once the lecturer asked us to create a quiz for the other classmates to answer, I chose to create 5 questions regarding ‘Mr. Nobody’ ; a poem that should be learnt by the Form 1 students. But my classmates hated it so much because it wasn’t fun at all. How sad could that be 😥 Ala tapi sebenarnye sebab dyorang tak bole nak jawabchahahahahahapadanmukahahaha.

  • First of all, teacher needs to sign in the application.
  • Second, they can choose to create quiz, discussion or survey.
  • Only after that teacher can proceed with questions and options for the answers. The format of the quiz should be in multiple choice with 4 options. But, the answer can be more than 1 if the teacher wished to. Besides, teacher can put images to reflect the questions too as well as the time limit for every questions to be answered by the students.
  • Once the quiz is done constructed, get the students to get their own computer and give the game pin which will direct them to the respected page for the quiz. Oh before that, they need to go to https://kahoot.it/ first and hen only they can put the game pin.
  • Students will then need to put on their nicknames and after done with all players, teacher can start the quiz. By the way, it is important to know that the question will only appear on the teacher’s monitor or the white screen while only the options for the answer appear on the student’s screen or monitor. So, students must be very fast and alert with this.
  • At the end, teacher can assess the students performance because there will be scoreboard as well as the analysis of the questions. With this, teacher can see the answers from all students, like how many answered the questions correctly and wrongly. This can help the teacher in improving or even pay ore attention to the particular topic or lesson.

DON’T YOU THINK THIS KAHOOT ! THING IS AWESOME ?!

You should try this with your students. If we, the university students enjoyed it so much, what kind of reaction do you expect from your school students ?

As for an English classroom context, teacher can create questions that relates to vocabulary, writing or even tenses. Well, it will just depend on your lesson plan.

In my opinion, those who resist gamification in education often cite its improper use of rewards as a motivator. Critics argue that relying on games can be detrimental to intrinsic motivation. Receiving a badge for a job well done is meaningless without an understanding of what specific skills this badge rewards. I agree; games can’t be used to replace pedagogy, but can be used to enhance the overall learning experience.

Come to think of this =)

:: Info-graphic ::

INFO GRAPHIC can be defined as visual image such as a chart or diagram used to represent information or data.

what-is-an-infographic1

A well-designed info graphic can help you simplify a complicated subject or turn an otherwise boring subject into a captivating experience. Ideally, an infographic should be visually engaging, contain a subject matter that is appealing to your target audience, and be supported by other engaging content across your website and social channels.

By the way, here are ten different ways that infographics can be used :

  • a recruiting tool
  • presenting survey data
  • simplifying a complicated concept
  • explaining how something works
  • comparisons
  • interesting facts
  • when words just don’t work
  • raise awareness
  • inform customers
  • leverage a holiday session

In the context of English language teaching, I believe this kind of visual representation of information could stimulate the student’s curiosity in learning something. One of the differences between an info graphic and poster is the information stated or delivered. It appears that info graphic can be more detail in giving the information needed.

As for the teachers, instead of drawing mind map or something, info graphic can be really useful as it can quickly communicate a message, simplifying the presentation of large amounts of data and to see data patterns and relationships. For example, teacher can create info graphic according to the lesson that is going to be learnt like preposition, punctuation, characters, plot of story and many more.

Below is an example of an info graphic that can be used in the classroom. I created this by myself =)

i-wonder

Too simple ? Not attractive enough ? I’m an amateur. #learningprocess HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !

I always knew I can do better. HAHAHAAHA ! It’s just that I need more and more ideas.

For your information, there are many info graphic makers that can be used. Some of them are :

  1. Pictochart
  2. Canva
  3. Microsoft Power Point

Both Pictochart and Canva have already have the templates to create info graphic. But that doesn’t mean that Microsoft Power Point is left far behind. Using Power Point, one can always customize and specify the size and draw shapes from scratches.

As for one of our assignment, we were asked to create our own info graphic using any of the info graphic makers. Of course, you need to sign up in order to have an access to the website and application. I must admit it was fun anyway to create such info graphic on our own. I chose to create an info graphic about one of the poems learnt by the lower form students – I Wonder by Jeannie Kirkby.

From my personal opinion, I found out that using info graphic in classroom can be very useful. Besides, it is not that hard for a teacher to create one for the use in the teaching. Students too, can learn something upon seeing it. Surely they will be attracted with the colors and graphics used. Plus, teacher can always publish their info graphic created online. In doing so, everybody can get benefits form it 🙂

SHARING IS CARING

:: English T&L and Traditional Games ::

Malay society is rich with variety of traditional games. These games are usually played during free time.Traditional games are very popular among people who live in rural area. They have been played by our ancestors since their were young. Nowadays, most of traditional games are not being played anymore by the children as they are more attracted to play computer games. However, some of the children who lives in rural area are still interested to play the traditional games. The most popular traditional games played by children are galah panjang, congkak, batu seremban, ting-ting and many more. There is no doubt that Malay traditional games is one of the cultural heritage that is priceless and cannot be replaced because it symbolizes our custome, culture, and identity of one nation.

Okay people, this is not going to be a post that only talk about our traditional games. Here, I’m trying to integrate English teaching and learning throughout these kind of games.

sounds too ambitious . #siscuba *fliphair*

First of all, considering that our children nowadays that are too attached with gadgets, why don’t teachers spend some time, in integrating one or two of these traditional games in the English class ? Apart form having some fun and being introduced with the games, they can learn English in the same time.

How ?

Yes, exactly ! So these are some of my ideas.

images (3)

  • In order to play any games, there should be some rules and regulations, as well as the sequence of the game. So, if the students have no idea at all about the traditional games that they are introduced with, perhaps teacher can make some effort to tell them what the game is all about. Of course, in English ! After done with the ‘story-telling’, teacher can ask students to come out with a presentation for instance in introducing the particular traditional game. In the other words, let the students tell about the game back in their own words. This presentation can be either orally done or in essay form. Well at least, it can reflect the student’s understanding and how they are going to deliver it through speech or writing.
  • Have lesson that evolve the usage of sequence connectors can be just great too. As for this, teacher can focus on how the game is played. There should be sequence and some process upon playing so the teaching and learning about sequence connectors is relevant to be done.
  • Teach the students VOCABULARY ! Trust me, they will learn a lot. Teacher can focus on the terms used in the games. New verb and nouns can also be taught and learnt.
  • For some traditional games, taking turn is involved like playing ting-ting or hopscotch. Teacher can be really creative in in deciding some English tasks when one of the players loses his/her turn. The task should be related to the particular English lesson that is going to be learnt. For example, ask the students to create some sentences with the usage or tenses and what not. This should be really interesting. Besides, if the particular traditional game involve any rigid space or square to be played, teacher can assign an English task for each square. Let’s take ting-ting for an instance. Basically enough, this game is played on several squares that player needs to hop on each square. Perhaps a simple English task can be assigned for the player to be completed upon hopping on each square like changing some verb to its past tense form or even give any related adjectives to some nouns.

I really hope that these ideas can give benefits to teachers out there =)

:: Teach English with Movies ::

Dear teachers,

Have you ever heard of teaching English using movies ? OMG what kind of question is this ! I bet you guys do. Jyeahhh ~

It’s a fact that when you teach with movies, you offer your class a welcome break to traditional teaching method. Not only is it a break for the teachers, but for the students as well. Using movies in class can be engaging and helpful for students. Well at least, it can break their boredom on chalk and talk.

However, teachers who show movies that are not connected to learning have given movies a bad name.

However, teachers who show movies that are not connected to learning have given movies a bad name.

Basically enough, everything has its pros and cons. The same goes to the usage of movie as the teaching aid in English teaching and learning session. It is undeniable that the benefits of using movies in classroom context are numerous but one need to think of the drawbacks too. Below are some points and views that teacher can consider upon using movies during English teaching and learning session.

BENEFITS

  • It can be really fun and practical for students but follow-up exercise after the movie is being watched must be done so that students can reflect what they have learnt.
  • Instead of chalk and talk, having students to watch movie can be a good idea especially on days where students are unfocused. Yet, the movie must be something on the topic the teacher is teaching. Presenting information in numerous ways can be the key in helping students understand topics.
  • Sometimes a movie can really help students get a feel for an era or an event. For example, instead of asking them to just read the short story of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, students can understand and engage to the story more if they are given the chance to watch the movie.
  • *and the list goes on*

DRAWBACKS

  • Movie-watching is not applicable for all levels of students especially the weak students. Plus, some students might not be interested or excited about the movie at all.
  • Movie-watching could take too much time. The maximum hour of 2 period class is 80 minutes and there are possibilities that the movie can’t be finished by time the period ends. To continue watching it during the next class session might make the students feel bored.
  • Perception of movies can be bad if the teacher doesn’t pick the movie wisely that it serves no purpose within the classroom setting.
  • *and the list goes on*

Above are just some of the benefits and drawbacks that I feel important to be looked upon and considered with =)

Being a practicum teacher once, I had experienced in writing lesson plans in the record book for teachers. We called it buku oren’ because of the color. Yeah, you know, the big thick book that every teacher should have and write their lesson plan every day ~ lalala.

So as for the lesson plan, we classed the phase of teaching into 3, namely the :

  1. set induction
  2. development phase
  3. conclusion

The rationale of the set induction is to trigger the students’ schemata about what is going to be learnt. The development phase focuses more on the content or gist of learning together with the activities while the conclusion part is all about the reflection or the closing of the lesson.

The same concept is used on the reading activities. In reading, there are 3 phases that are  about the same with the phases in the lesson plan especially when conducting activities that relate to the reading text.

  • pre-reading
  • while reading
  • post-reading

There are many activities can be done for each phase. Yeah I’m hitting around the bush again. Sorry that I’m not that good in words. Arghhh !

*facepalm*

Let’s just straight to the point. I’m not good neither in words nor writing. But here, I really want to share some of the activities that can be assigned to the students if you are using movie as the teaching aid. I divided the activities into 3 phases ; pre-watching, while watching and post-watching. I don’t even know if the terms ever exist but just pretend they are okay 😉

Pre-watching

  • The poster of this movie shows some characters in the movie. Predict and briefly describe the characteristics of each character in the movie.
  • You will be given a list of questions about the movie. Read and understand them because you are going to get the answers after watching the movie.

While watching

  • In groups, choose any category on part of speech. Pay attention to any category on part of speech that is being used in the movie. Come out with a list and examples of the sentences.
  • Listen and take note to any words that you cannot understand and detect the context or the scene. After you’ve watched the movies, tell the class your confusion and your friends will share their understanding with you. Once you’ve understood the meaning of those words, create a simple note to be pasted on the class board so everyone can read it.

Post-watching

  • There are some moral values that one can learn based on the movie. List at least 3 moral values that you can gain from the movie and relate it with your daily life.
  • If you are the director of this movie, how would you want the ending be like ? Based on your creativity, create on your own endings.

Actually, there are more to be listed like :

  1. What are the characters you wish to change ?
  2. Write on your own interpretation about each/certain character in the movie.
  3. What are some of the symbolic items you can find in the movie ? What are their significance ?
  4. You are going to be one of the characters from the movie and you are required to act according to the characteristics of the character, but in different situations.
... and the list goes on

… and the list goes on

I adopted some of the ideas from several websites. Feel free to visit :

Below are some suggestions on movies that teacher might want to use in their classroom of English teaching :

Hotel Rwanda

Wall-E

Macbeth

Phantom of the Opera

The Karate Kid

The Breakfast Club

Finding Nemo

Inside Out

As a conclusion, movies can be an effective tool as you are creating your lesson plans. The key to success is to choose wisely and create lesson plans that involve the information learned in the movie. It is good if once a time, the teacher can get the students to watch movies. Learning English should be interesting and fun. Perhaps this can be one of the ways to make the students enjoy their English lesson.
