There Is No Escape

•March 27, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I recently bought some DCX cards off of Ebay, since I don’t have a hobby league to win these at, and I have been dying to build something with the cards I got. The first card I opened was There Is No Escape so that will be our focus today.

For those of you who haven’t seen or heard of There Is No Escape look at the pic below.

large_marquee_card21.jpg

With There Is No Escape you get the option of getting a free character at the price of losing a resource. Now some of you might not like that idea but when combined with a high cost army character it can be quite good.

The Build

Characters 31
4 Kate Spencer Manhunter, Fearless Renegade
3 Puppet Master, Overprotective Father
4 Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival
1 Manhunter Engineer, Army
4 Ultron, Army
15 Manhunter Giant, Army

Plot Twist 26
4 There Is No Escape
4 Enemy of My Enemy
4 Savage Beatdown
4 War Without End
4 Flying Kick
3 Mystical Paralysis
3 Call in a Favor

Equipment 3
3 Ego Gem

OK, so your probably like Doom and Manhunters? Well after ruling out Revenge Squad and the search of Ruin, to help get TINE, I decided on the next best thing. Three drop Doom can help you search for TINE or whatever you may need and you don’t have to fill your row with On-goings.

You want odds that way you can take advantage of TINE on turn five. On three you play Doom and search for a TINE or whatever you need. Four is Ultron since there weren’t any good Mahunter characters. Then on five is where the combo starts. You play Manhunter Giant and when he gets stunned you bring out another Giant with TINE. You only want to use TINE only once on turn five so that way from every turn after five you can repeat what you just did. Then on turn seven you should have six Giants on the field with the help of War Without End and you should be able to clean house or at least deck them out.

Anyways thats basically the idea for the deck, that I just came up with in about an hour before I posted this. Its really janky and probably not too good but it looks fun to play.

Spring Break!

•March 25, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I took last week off since it was my spring break and it’s great to be back. I wish my break would have been a week later so I could go to Mega-Weekend Chicago. Oh well.

For about the third year in a row now I have filled out both the men’s and women’s NCAA brackets and this year I joined a group for the men’s and am now competing against other vs players. I am tied for second and only 30 points behind first place, so there is a chance I could still win. And my pick to win it all is still alive:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

•March 17, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone and a special Happy Birthday to my brother Noah, who turns ten today. He is having a skating party, so it looks as though I’ll be trying to skate later today.

More City Champs went on this past weekend and we got a lot of coverage from Foilball, who was at the Comic Cult City Champs in California. Try saying that five times fast.  They had over twenty people and first place got a flight to Mega-Weekend NY. How awesome is that? The top 8 also got custom Comic Cult playmats, that look absolutely fantastic. It’s times like these that make me wish I lived in California.

Speaking of City Champs, remeber the ultimate prize for winning the first ever City Champs? In case you forgot, it was a chance to have your face on an actual VS card. Jason Hager won that honor and we finally have the art that will feature his face:

jason-hager.jpg

Yes, that is Jonboy Meyers artwork. The artwork is fantastic and I can’t wait to see what card it actually goes on.

Shaq Attack

•March 12, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I just had to talk about this really quick. As some of you may know Shaq is with the Suns and since getting there he has shown a lot of energy. So much energy in fact that he dove three rows deep to save a loose ball on Sunday. Well last night I saw one of the funniest things in a basketball game I have ever seen:

I don’t know if you can tell from the video but even the ref was laughing.  I still can’t stop laughing. Funny stuff.

Countdown #4 X-Mental

•March 12, 2008 • Leave a Comment

With the release of the X-Men set we were introduced to the mutant traits. At first I was a little skeptical about how well it would work and to tell the truth for the most part it didn’t. The one thing that did work though was the Mental trait. The Mental trait made its big break at PC Atlanta in the form of X-Mental.

Quang Nguyen

Characters
4 Artie, Arthur Maddicks
4 Emma Frost, Friend or Foe
2 Exodus, Acolyte
3 Jean Grey, Red
3 Mastermind, Dark Dreamer
2 Postman, Memory Thief
4 Professor X, Headmaster
1 Psylocke, Armored Empath
1 Rachel Summers ◊ Phoenix, Phoenix of the Future
4 Sage, Tessa
4 Tarot, Hellion

Plot Twists
4 Duck and Cover
3 Enemy of My Enemy
4 Mental Domination
3 Mutant Massacre
4 Mutopia, Team-Up
3 Phoenix Rising
3 Turnabout
3 X-Treme Maneuver
Locations
1 X-Corp: Amsterdam

The first stages of X-Mental relied heavily on the draw power of Sage, Tessa to help get key plot twist either for brickwalling attacks or for whatever the situation called for. While this version was only good in the Marvel Modern Age of Avengers/X-Men it would eventually evolve into something great.

Now, X-Mental has a much more different approach. It hardly relies on Sage anymore to dig for key plot twist and doesn’t run as many mental characters. With the addition of Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival it can now tech in many plot twist for all sorts of matchups and easily search for them.

Characters
4 Sage, Tessa
4 Captain Boomerang
4 Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival
4 Professor X, Headmaster
4 Emma Frost, Friend or Foe
4 Jean Grey, Red
1 X-Man, Nate Grey
1 Exodus, Acolyte
1 Rachel Summers <> Phoenix, Phoenix of the Future

Plot Twist
4 Enemy of My Enemy
4 Phoenix Rising
4 Savage Beatdown
4 Against All Odds
3 Skree
3 A Proud Zinco Product
2 Pathetic Attempt
2 Omnipotence
2 Mutant Massacre
2 Sneak Attack
1 Have A Blast

Locations
2 Soul World

This is what I was going to play at my City Champs but at the last minute decided against it. As you can see it has something for just about every matchup. The one thing bad about the deck is that if you miss a drop after 3 or have bad draws you pretty much lose. Other than that it is really fun to play and while challenging it isn’t to hard to learn it.

X-Mental is easily adaptable to any situation and its one of the reasons it’s my number four favorite deck. So next week I’ll have my third favorite deck which recently got a refeature in one of the last two sets.

Alan Scott Jank

•March 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Yesterday before my City Champs I had a chance to play a few games with Steve, who I later faced in the tournament, and he showed me this janktastic idea of using Alan Scott and Human Torch, Flame On to burn your opponent for 26 on turn 6. I didn’t see the entire decklist but I what I saw was mostly Fantastic Four but on four you play Alan Scott and move him hidden with Invisbility.

 large_card11.jpg

So after seeing that I was wondering what other ideas we could use Alan Scott with? I am thinking maybe combine him with Underworld and Netherworld Gift to make some Undead Legions. Any other ideas?

No Country for Old Men hits DVD today and I can’t wait to watch it later tonight.  Anyone else seen this? If so how is it? Call it Friendo.

City Champs Report

•March 10, 2008 • 1 Comment

Well yesterday was my City Champs and the turnout unfortunately really bad. We had four people total and my only guess is that the time switch was the reason for a low turnout.

I was originally going to play X-Mental but then decided to play Skrulls at the last minute.

Characters-30
4 Lockjaw, Inhuman’s Best Friend
4 Franklin Richards, Creator of Counter Earth
4 Warskrull, Skrull Infiltrator
4 Captain America, Skrull Imposter
3 Wolverine, Skunucklehead
1 Crystal, Elementelle
3 Ethan Edwards
2 Ronan the Accuser, Starforce
3 Paibok
1 Quicksilver, Terrigenesis Rebirth
1 Titanus

Plot Twist-27
4 Enemy of my Enemy
4 Savage Beatdown
4 Act of Defiance
4 Skreeeeeee!!!!
3 Extended Family
3 Blinding Rage
3 Pathetic Attempt
1 Mutopia
1 Have a Blast

Locations 4
4 The Great Refuge

I knew that two of the three other players had a lot of hidden characters so I decided at the last minute to play 4 Skreeeeeee!!!!.

Game 1- Josh vs Bryan( World’s Finest)

He wins the roll and chooses odds. I keep while he mulligans.  He doesn’t have a character until turn 3 so Franklin and Lockjaw get some beats in during the first two turns. I have Wolverine on three with a Skree into Oracle and get the one way and some more concealed beats. On four we accidently switch initiatives and he has a visible Batman. While I can only muster a Captain America. So he attacks directly(since I have moved everyone hidden with Franklin) first even though it should be my iniative. After my attacks we end up catching the mistake but he decides to scoop as he would lose next turn anyway.

Game 2- Josh vs Steve( Injustice Gang Concealed)

I win the roll and choose odds. I mulligan and he keeps. I miss on one while he has Catwoman for a four point swing. I almost miss on two but he plays Secret Files and that lets me get Franklin. On three I have Cap and he has Black Manta and I decide to move Cap hidden which was stupid and after my attacks he attacks back for like twenty. He has initiative on four and gets me to exactly zero.

Game 3- Josh vs Someone who’s name I forgot.

Well this match goes by fast. My opponent has to leave for some reason and gives me the win and drops.

So I am 2-1 and end up getting 2nd. I got some MVL packs, a Flash T-Shirt, 4 of each of the Common/Ucommon DCX cards and traded for 3 of the Guy Gardner. Overall I had a pretty good time but I wished there would have been more people.

City Championships

•March 6, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Well only three days till my City Championship and I think I found what I am going to play. I can’t tell you what it is yet because it’s my number 4 deck in the Countdown series but I’ll give you a clue:

imagecaq1ne9n.jpg

I can’t wait to play some competitve VS again. The last I played against someone other than my brother was the DCL Release Celebration. Well with the City Championships so close what do you plan on playing at yours?

I was checking around ComingSoon.net earlier this morning and found two cool tidbits. #1. Juno releases on DVD right around my birthday on April 15 and I’ll definitely be picking that up. #2. For those who don’t know Zack Snyder, 300, is directing Watchmen and exactly one year before its release has posted some pictures of some of the characters, which you can see here.

Countdown: #5 Shadowpact

•March 4, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Hello and Welcome to the first series of Countdown! In each series I’ll be counting down my Top 5 favorites of anything VS related.

With over 3,000 cards in the Vs System library there are literally hundreds of deck combinations that any deck builder could come up with. But even with all those possibilities there are always those decks that you play all the time and update with each new set release, otherwise known as your favorite decks. Well, for this series of Countdown I’ll be counting down my Top 5 favorite decks and my number 5 is my Shadowpact deck.

When Infinite Crisis was first released I saw two teams I wanted to build and neither of them wasn’t Shadowpact. I just didn’t really like the theme of low endurance is good for this team thing and it didn’t help that I had never even heard of Shadowpact before the set. It wasn’t until PC Indy 2006, when I saw the following deck list played by Anthony Justice that I really started to like Shadowpact:

Anthony Justice

Characters
4 The Phantom Stranger, Fallen Angel
1 June Moon ◊ Enchantress, Bad Witch
4 Detective Chimp, Shoeless Gumshoe
4 Madame Xanadu, Cartomancer
4 Manitou Dawn
4 Blackbriar Thorn
4 Zatanna, Magical Manipulator
1 Dr. Occult, Richard Occult
1 June Moon ◊ Enchantress, Good Witch
2 Nightmaster, Jim Rook

Plot Twists
1 Transmutation
1 Mystical Binding
3 Magical Conduit
4 Divination
2 The Conclave
4 Stepping Between Worlds
4 Abjuration
4 Magical Lobotomy
4 Collecting Souls

Locations
4 Chimp Detective Agency

I really like the concept and it is just fun to load your two drop with lots of counters and be able to stun a five drop without stunning back. But to tell the truth I haven’t played or updated this deck in a while and I think its time to. Now like I just said I really like the Blackbriar concept but in today’s environment I don’t think it will work as well with all the weenie hate. So I am going to go a different route and focus on Conjuration.

Characters:30
4 Madame Xanadu, Cartomancer
4 Jared Stevens <> Fate, Mystic Defender
3 Manitou Dawn, Spirit Shaman
4 Detective Chimp, Shoeless Gumshoe
4 June Moon <> Enchantress, Good Witch
2 Dr. Occult, Richard Occult
3 Black Alice, Lori Zechlin
2 June Moon <> Enchantress, Bad Witch
4 The Phantom Stranger, Fallen Angel

Plot Twist:26
4 Mobilize
4 Conjuration
4 Conclave
3 SKREEEEEEE!
3 Transmutation
3 Divination
3 Abjuration
2 Pathetic Attempt

Locations: 4
4 Chimp Detective Agency

Okay so the plan is to play Conjuration on turn 3 and play June Moon. This should give you good board position going into next turn where you should have Dr. Occult, who should be a 9/9. From there you just curve out and you should be able to win on 6 or 7. The deck has lots of search so you shouldn’t miss a drop. It also has plenty of room to tech for your local metagame. This deck is really fun to play and it should have some good match-ups but I have yet to test it.

So there you have it my number 5 favorite deck Shadowpact. Next week I’ll have my number 4 deck which sadly won’t ever get any more help theme wise. Can you figure out what it is?

New DCX Cards and Official VsSystem.com update.

•March 3, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Last week we found out from Carlos the Dwarf that VsSystem.com would be cutting down it weekly articles and would only have one a week written by Stu. Well Toby Wachter posted the official update of at VsRealms and here it is for those yet to see it:

Hi everyone,

First, I want to say that I’m very happy to see how passionate everyone has been in these discussions about the game and its web presence. Unfortunately, word of this change got out before we had finalized all our plans, causing some incorrect assumptions to be made. Now that everything is squared away, I’d like to share our vision for the future of Vs. System on the web.

The most important thing to note is that the only major change is scaling back our daily strategy columns. VsSystem.com will still be kept up to date with all the latest news on upcoming products and programs. We’ll still have preview weeks for new sets. You’ll still be able to come to the website and find out what the prizes are this month at your local Hobby League, or information on this year’s Mega-Weekends. The brand website is still the place to visit for all official Vs. System information.

The only change in philosophy is that we feel Vs. System players are best equipped to share community news and strategy advice with each other. Rather than housing all this information on the website and having it absorbed by the player base in a passive way, we’d like to encourage everyone to be actively engaged in the game, and contribute where possible. We know that Vs. players are some of the most vocal and passionate voices in this industry, so why not bring out that energy and use it to benefit the community? Our columnists over the years have been great, and they’ll continue to make positive contributions to the game as we move forward (more on this later). But, it’s clear to anyone who visits this forum that Vs. has an intense, loyal following for its game that is unique to TCGs. And we think the future of any game is brighter when players are encouraged to participate.

Starting in March, VsSystem.com will switch to a new format for regular content. Rian Fike will write a weekly column called “Rallying Cry!”, which will highlight the best Vs. System content on the internet. It’ll be a great way for readers to get a snapshot of what’s going on in the community every week, and more importantly, it’ll provide independent Vs. websites with exposure. With this new format, every single member of the Vs. community will have a chance to have their voice heard on a larger scale. Start a blog, write some intriguing content, and you’ll get a mention in Rian’s weekly column on VsSystem.com. It’s as simple as that.

We’re also going to have a bi-weekly column that focuses on strategy, along with community happenings that may slip through the cracks. This column will rotate its authors, in an effort to get a fresh voice into the mix on a regular basis. Some columnists who have signed up for this role include Patrick Yapjoco, Steve Garrett and Miguel Rodriguez.

Finally, and most importantly, I’m pleased to announce that starting in March, we will hand out a cool prize to the Vs. Blogger of the Month. This is our way of recognizing and rewarding individuals in the community who work towards helping the game grow. Every month, we’ll keep a close eye on the Vs. blogs and websites fans work on, and we’ll send a prize to our favorite. For the month of March, the top blogger will receive a full set of Marvel Legends. We’re aiming to change this prize up every month, but we think this is a pretty good start.

To become a Vs. Blogger of the Month, you need to show dedication to quality content on a regular basis, and positivity within the Vs. community. There are a lot of great Vs. blogs out there already, so if you don’t get picked for March, don’t get discouraged! We’ll have another prize to give out in April.

I hope this helps clarify why we made this decision, and our plans moving forward. Vs. System has been built around a strong community since day one, and we want to encourage those voices to speak up. We may print the cards, but we feel this game belongs to you, the fans. We made these changes to give you a stronger voice, and we can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

So after reading that it seems that everything will for the most part stay the same except instead of having an article everyday it will be about two a week. And the best part is they are giving out prizes for blogger of the month and March’s prize is a full set of MVL. How cool is that!!

Also on Vssystem.com we got the latest update of hobby league cards:

large_card1.jpg

large_card2.jpg

large_card3.jpg

I really like all these cards and especially the Jared Stevens. Look for him to featured in a deck on here pretty soon.
