Greta Thunberg — Simply Amazing

I have written before about the young Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, and in fact she was one of my ‘good people’ one Wednesday last December.  Sometimes an activist will start like gangbusters, and then after a few months you hear nothing more about them, but not so Ms. Thunberg.  I see her name in the news at least once a week, and she has been inspirational to many young climate-conscious groups around the world.

Today, she is back in the news, and in a big way! A couple of big ways, actually.

Greta-Thunberg

The first is that she is featured on the first track of the forthcoming album of British pop-rock band The 1975.  In the track, Greta delivers a speech about the global climate emergency, against an instrumental background by the band.  Now, I have never heard of The 1975, but I give them two thumbs up for this effort, as well as the fact that all proceeds from the track will be going to the climate action group Extinction Rebellion.

The full text of Greta’s speech on the track is at the end of this post.

In an interview with The Guardian, Greta said …

“I’m grateful to get the opportunity to get my message out to a broad new audience in a new way. I think it’s great that The 1975 is so strongly engaged in the climate crisis. We quickly need to get people in all branches of society to get involved. And this collaboration I think is something new.”

The second thing is that Greta has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize this year.  She was nominated by Freddy Andre Oevstegaard, a parliamentary representative in Norway …

“We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict.”

greta-2.pngThe Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce its latest laureates in October, and those selected will receive their prizes in December.  I do so want to see her win it!

And the third thing that has put Greta in the news this week is that she will be coming to the U.S. next month to attend a United Nations summit meeting on global warming in New York!  Now, you may remember from my previous post about Greta that she does not fly on airplanes because of the CO2 emissions, so you may be wondering how she plans to get here.

“Good news! I’ll be joining the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York. I’ve been offered a ride on the 60ft racing boat Malizia II.”

Malizia-2

Malizia II

Malizia II, is outfitted with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate electricity. That should make the entire trip possible without burning any fossil fuels.

Boris Herrmann, who will skipper the boat, said the voyage would not be the luxury cruise that a high-tech yacht might conjure in the popular imagination. The Malizia II is built for speed, not comfort. It has no kitchen, refrigeration system, air-conditioning or showers.

Think about this one for a minute, folks.  This young woman is so committed to saving our planet that she is willing to spend two weeks on a small boat, eating mostly freeze-dried and vacuum-packed meals, in order to do her part to save the environment.  Greta is sixteen years old … most kids her age are attached at the hip to their cell phones, ipods, laptops, and wouldn’t dream of missing a shower or a hot meal, let alone spend two weeks in a small boat on choppy seas!

Greta will be accompanied on the trip by a filmmaker; her father, Svante; and Pierre Casiraghi, the head of the Malizia II racing team who is also the grandson of Prince Rainier III of Monaco and the American actress Grace Kelly.

Greta is, with her parents’ approval, taking the year off from school to campaign against climate change, also plans to attend the annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change talks in December in Santiago, Chile.

I was impressed by this young woman when I first wrote about her eight months ago, but today … the only word I have is “WOW!!!”  She puts us all to shame, and particularly those who would “deny” climate science in order to justify their own greed.

I would like to end with a quote that was sent to me tonight by a very special friend:

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” – Helen Keller

Ms. Thunberg is doing something that she can do … let’s all try to do just one thing more that we can do to help heal and protect our home, planet Earth.

Full text of Greta’s speech on The 1975 track:

We are right now in the beginning of a climate and ecological crisis.

And we need to call it what it is. An emergency.

We must acknowledge that we do not have the situation under control and that we don’t have all the solutions yet. Unless those solutions mean that we simply stop doing certain things.

We admit that we are losing this battle.

We have to acknowledge that the older generations have failed. All political movements in their present form have failed.

But homo sapiens have not yet failed.

Yes, we are failing, but there is still time to turn everything around. We can still fix this. We still have everything in our own hands.

But unless we recognise the overall failures of our current systems, we most probably don’t stand a chance.

We are facing a disaster of unspoken sufferings for enormous amounts of people. And now is not the time for speaking politely or focusing on what we can or cannot say. Now is the time to speak clearly.

Solving the climate crisis is the greatest and most complex challenge that homo sapiens have ever faced. The main solution, however, is so simple that even a small child can understand it. We have to stop our emissions of greenhouse gases.

And either we do that, or we don’t.

You say that nothing in life is black or white.

But that is a lie. A very dangerous lie.

Either we prevent a 1.5 degree of warming, or we don’t.

Either we avoid setting off that irreversible chain reaction beyond human control, or we don’t.

Either we choose to go on as a civilization or we don’t.

That is as black or white as it gets.

Because there are no grey areas when it comes to survival.

Now we all have a choice.

We can create transformational action that will safeguard the living conditions for future generations.

Or we can continue with our business as usual and fail.

That is up to you and me.

And yes, we need a system change rather than individual change. But you cannot have one without the other.

If you look through history, all the big changes in society have been started by people at the grassroots level. People like you and me.

So, I ask you to please wake up and make the changes required possible. To do your best is no longer good enough. We must all do the seemingly impossible.

Today, we use about 100 million barrels of oil every single day. There are no politics to change that. There are no rules to keep that oil in the ground.

So, we can no longer save the world by playing by the rules. Because the rules have to be changed.

Everything needs to change. And it has to start today.

So, everyone out there, it is now time for civil disobedience. It is time to rebel.

“Peace”  ☮️

🕊️ Peace.  What does the word actually mean?  According to Merriam-Webster, it is …

  • a state of tranquility or quiet: such as
    • freedom from civil disturbance
    • a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom
    • freedom from being disturbed or bothered by people, noise, etc.
  • freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions
  • harmony in personal relations
  • a state or period of mutual concord between governments
    • a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity
  • used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell

Last year, the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 to Maria Corina Machado, for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” and for being “an extraordinary example of courage”.  Felon Trump, naturally, was enraged, saying that he had done more to promote peace, blah blah blah, etc., etc., etc.  End of story, right?

WRONG!!!

Yesterday, Ms. Machado actually gave her Peace Prize medal to the Felon!!!  Yes, she apparently either never deserved it in the first place, being of very small mind, or else she sold her soul downriver in hopes of gaining something from Felon Trump.  Either way, she is not deserving of the award … not now, not ever.  She has spat in the faces of the Nobel Committee and of those people around the globe who actually HAVE done something to promote peace and goodwill here on Planet Earth!

The Norwegian Nobel Institute has said that once a prize is given out, it cannot be transferred.  So, as I read it, while Trump may have the physical medal, he does not have the Peace Prize and will not go down in history as the winner of the Peace Prize, nor should he.

He will, however, no doubt brag, and refer to himself as a “Nobel Peace Prize winner” until we just want to throw up.

Now, let’s go back to the definition of “Peace” for a minute and assess just how poorly Trump’s behaviours, policies, and plans fit into that definition:

  • ‘a state of tranquility or quiet’ – Trump screams and incites his followers to scream loudly when they don’t like something. The noise level in the U.S. has increased at least 50-fold since Trump first showed us his ugly mug back in 2015.
    • ‘freedom from civil disturbance’ – need I even comment on this one? We’ve seen more civil unrest in the past year than any other year since the end of the Vietnam War.  Remember January 6, 2021?
    • ‘a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom’ – one week ago, an innocent woman was shot three times and killed without provocation by a government (ICE) agent just after dropping off her child at school. Need I say more?
    • ‘freedom from being disturbed or bothered by people, noise, etc.’ – talk to the people of Minneapolis – or Greenland or Venezuela or Mexico and ask them how much freedom from noise or disturbance they have right now.
  • ‘freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions’ – I’ve had more disquieting moments and oppresive thoughts in the past year than in the 73 years prior combined!
  • ‘harmony in personal relations’ – I don’t know about you, but I have lost more friends and family over disagreements about Trumpism than I can count on all of my fingers and toes. He incites hatred.
  • ‘a state or period of mutual concord between governments’ – we have damn near destroyed our relationships with our allies in just one short year, and there is literally no government on the planet that fully trusts the United States today.
    • ‘a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity’ – Trump has not negotiated any such agreement with any nation since taking office. His claims of negotiating peace between Israel and Gaza are false claims – if you don’t believe me, go talk to the people living in poverty and fear in Gaza.
  • ‘used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell’ – I don’t think I’ve ever heard him end a speech, a conversation, or even a social media post with “Peace”.

In all, the words “peace” and “Trump” should not even be spoken in the same sentence.  Trump is a sadistic, maniacal, cruel, inhumane excuse for a human.  Felon Trump is the least peaceful person I know of living today.  The only prize he deserves is an orange prison jumpsuit and a long, very painful death.

Mahatma Gandhi emphasized that true greatness lies in showing compassion, kindness, and empathy, rather than just existing as a member of the human species.

♫ I Will Survive ♫ (Redux)

I have played this one a couple of times, the last time back in 2022.  It’s a song that … well, maybe we should all be singing right now, given the state of the world and the toxicity that exists among nations and among people for a variety of reasons.  I really considered playing John Lennon’s “Imagine” tonight, but I’ve played that one to death here, so I went in search of something else that would be inspirational, give us hope … hope, that sometimes-elusive quantity that we really do need in order to … SURVIVE!

From the last time I played it back in 2022 …

This song has become known as a “female empowerment” song, and most often it is associated with the break-up of two lovers.  But …

Dino Fekaris, the song’s lyricist, was a staff writer for Motown until he was fired.  Says Fekaris, of the inspiration for this song …

“They let me go after almost seven years. I was an unemployed songwriter contemplating my fate. I turned the TV on, and there it was: a song I had written for a movie theme titled Generation was playing right then (the song was performed by Rare Earth). I took that as an omen that things were going to work out for me. I remember jumping up and down on the bed saying, ‘I’m going to make it. I’m going to be a songwriter. I will survive!”

Freddie Perren was another former Motown songwriter, and he & Fekaris paired up on this song, and went on to form their own production duo and scored big with Peaches & Herb, taking Reunited to #1.

Gaynor sees this song as just a simple song about survival, regardless of what you have to overcome.

“I love the empowering effect, I love the encouraging effect. It’s a timeless lyric that addresses a timeless concern.”

When last I played this in early 2020, my dear friend Bee commented and included a link to a handwashing video Ms. Gaynor had done to the tune of this song.  I found it fun, so I’m including it as well!  Thanks, Bee!

And my heartfelt thanks to Ellen Nothstein … if you’re reading this, Ellen … this one’s for you.

I Will Survive
Gloria Gaynor

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along
And so you’re back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock, I should have made you leave your key
If I’d known for just one second you’d be back to bother me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore
Weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
Do you think I’d crumble
Did you think I’d lay down and die?

Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
And I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive
I will survive, hey, hey

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
And I spent oh-so many nights just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high and you see me
Somebody new
I’m not that chained-up little person and still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free
Well, now I’m saving all my lovin’ for someone who’s loving me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore
Weren’t you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
Do you think I’d crumble
Did you think I’d lay down and die?

Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
And I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive
I will survive

Oh
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore
Weren’t you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
Do you think I’d crumble
Did you think I’d lay down and die?

Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
And I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive
I will survive
I will survive

A Tragic Tale Of Woe And War – Part III

This is the third part of the fictional series I started on Sunday, the 11th of January.  Or is it fictional?

Sam and Mike sat on the bed, silent, as each tried to think.  Finally, Mike spoke …

“We have to try to help Amanda, but I think our very first concern has to be figuring out what to tell the children.  They’re expecting her to pick them up … well, actually, under normal circumstances she would have already picked them up an hour ago!  It won’t be long before they start asking where their mom is.  What do we tell them?”

“How ‘bout we tell them that … um … their mom had to go to the hospital to visit a sick friend who just … had surgery?  A heart attack?”

“That would only work for a couple of hours, but they know that Amanda would come pick them up before bedtime.  I think … maybe we have to tell them some whitewashed version of the truth?  I think I better call my boss and tell him I won’t be in tonight.  Then I’m going to call a friend of mine who’s a criminal lawyer and ask his advice about how to help Amanda, or at the very least find out where they’ve taken her.”

The guys fixed a simple, but kid-friendly supper of hot dogs and french fries for the kids and told funny stories from their own childhoods to entertain the three children now in their care during supper.  Then, six-year-old Eliza, the middle one, began to whine a bit …

“Where’s momma … she ‘posed to come get us an’ take us home!  I miss momma an’ I miss my puppy, Magellan!  I wanna go home!”

Mike took a deep breath, then began the story he and Sam had finally agreed on …

“Kids, your mom won’t be picking you up tonight … you’ll be spending the night with us.  You see, there was a bit of a car accident and your mom and dad are in the hospital tonight.  They’re both okay, and I’m sure they won’t be there too long, but for right now, you’re stuck with me ‘n Sam and we’ll do everything we can to keep you safe and try to make you feel at home here.  Okay?”

For just a second, all three children were stunned and speechless, then the youngest, four-year-old Eddie, began crying and Eliza followed suit.  Steve, on the other hand, was obviously giving this some thought …

“Wait, why were they together?  Dad was ‘posed to be at his work and mom at hers?  Will you take us to see them?”

“We’ll try to take you to see them tomorrow … or perhaps the next day … let’s wait and see how well they are doing tomorrow, okay?  For tonight, I’m afraid you’re stuck with us old codgers.  I’m so sorry, kids … what can we do to make you feel better?”

“I want my momma!!!  I want her NOW!!!”

Steve and Mike knew it was going to be a long evening and they were looking forward to finally getting the kids to bed at the end of the day!

Sam did his best to try to take the kids’ minds off their troubles, but it was an uphill battle and he could tell his efforts fell short.  Meanwhile, Mike called his friend, Josh, the attorney.

“Hey, Josh … it’s me, Mike!  Long time, no see!”

“Yeah, hey Mike!  So good to hear from you … we need to get together soon for lunch.  How’s tricks?  And how’s Sam?”

“Yes, let’s make it a priority to do lunch soon!  Sam’s okay, but Josh … we’ve got something of a huge problem on our hands and I need your help, or at least your advice, for this is way out of my league.”

“Sure, Mike … what’s up?”

“We have friends … a couple named Gordon and Amanda Gibbs.  Early this morning, government thugs shot Gordon in front of his house while he was out walking their dog.  He’s in the hospital in serious condition, but luckily the bullets missed any vital organs.  But then, this afternoon, when Amanda was visiting Gordon in the hospital, government agents barged into Gordon’s hospital room and seized Amanda, taking her out in shackles!  They have three children who are with me and Sam tonight, but they are seriously traumatized.  I don’t know where to turn, what to do.  Can you help me at least find out where they’ve taken Amanda and what we can do to help get her out?”

The line was silent for a moment …

“Josh … are you there?”

“Yeah, I’m here.  Wow, Mike … that’s a LOT to absorb!  How are the children handling it … are they very young?”

“The kids are traumatized, but Sam’s trying hard to keep them amused for the moment.  I don’t know if they’ll be able to sleep tonight, though.”

“Luckily, nature has a way of shutting the body down and bringing sleep despite everything.  Now, as to your dilemma.  Let me make a few calls and see what I can find out.  Now you said her name is Amanda … Gibbs?”

“Yes, Amanda Gibbs and she was taken from the ICU in University Hospital.  I sure appreciate your help, Josh … and please let me know as soon as you find out something … no matter what time it is!”

“Will do, Mike.  Take care and try to stay calm so you can help those kids.  I’ll get back to you soon.”

To be continued …

♫ Apache ♫

I thought I’d give you something new that I haven’t played here before today!  I was looking for something to redux that I hadn’t played for a while, and one of the songs I was considering was Walk, Don’t Run by the Ventures.  But, I was rather on the fence about it, and as I was reading the comments from last time I played it, I noticed a comment by Clive about this song, Apache, by The Shadows.  The Shadows weren’t well-known over on this side o’ the pond, so I was surprised when I started listening to the song and realized that I liked it back in the day!  So, Apache it is …

According to SongFacts (I’m no longer boycotting them, as my AdBlocker finally got rid of all the ads on their site, once again!):

“Apache” stands today as probably the best-known work by British proto-surf-rock band The Shadows. Being a #1 hit in the UK in 1960 was just the beginning; the instrumental song with an Old West motif was a worldwide hit with the #1 position in seven international charts at the same time: UK, Australia, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain, and South Africa.

With a record like that, why didn’t it chart in the US? Mostly because The Shadows didn’t get much promotion in America, and also because they didn’t go there to tour. Had some enterprising American DJ found the record and given it some spins, this story may have had a different ending, but The Shadows couldn’t break through. It took a year before the song finally charted in the US, and it was a version by the Danish jazz guitarist Jorgen Ingmann that did it. He went to #2 with the song in 1961 – his only US hit.

The Shadows guitarist was a 6-string wizard named Hank Marvin, and his work on this song inspired a legion of young British guitarists. In a 1963 interview for NME magazine, The Shadows referred to this song as an example of what distinctive sound they had that made them special. To get this “Hawaiian sound” (as they put it) to the lead guitar, you need to plug American Fender guitars into British Vox amplifiers. At least, that was how they did it.

John Lennon once claimed that The Shadows were one of the only things in British music “worth listening to” before The Beatles came along.

This song was written by Jerry Lordan, a British singer/guitarist/songwriter who had three UK hits in the ’60s, including “Who Could Be Bluer,” which was on the charts when he toured with The Shadows early in 1960. Lordan played “Apache” for the Shadows on the tour bus using his ukulele, which he used to write songs, and The Shadows loved it. Lordan hadn’t recorded the song himself – the first recording was by the Guitarist Bert Weedon, but Lordan wasn’t thrilled with his version, and Weedon’s record company hadn’t yet released the song, so The Shadows cut their own version which became a #1 UK hit for five weeks and was voted Record of the Year by NME.

No lyrics for this one, ’cause … it’s an instrumental!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

I am so hopping mad tonight that … I probably shouldn’t even write a post.  I should probably go take a nice hot shower, then curl up in bed and read, try to redirect my thoughts for a while.  But no, I’m a glutton for self-punishment, so here I am … and be warned that I may be brutal in this one and may not use ‘socially-acceptable’ language.  It isn’t just one thing that’s got me ranting and grrrrrrowling, but just about everything in today’s news.  Let’s start with this …

The United States Senate, 100 men and women elected by and paid by WE THE PEOPLE, just slapped us across the face and told us that we no longer matter to them, but that one person and only one person, a 34-times convicted felon occupying the Oval Office, is the only one who matters to them!  Well, to be more specific, 50 of those 100 men and women slapped us and told us to go away and let them lick Trump’s … er … boots.  The other 50 tried, but obviously not hard enough.  And so, with the vote tied at 50-50, ol’ couch hugger J.D. Vance was called to break the tie – which of course he did in Trump’s favour.  BAH HUMBUG and I hope every single senator who killed this War Powers Resolution suffers extreme pain all night long tonight!

What would the resolution have done?  In a nutshell, it would have blocked Felon Trump’s ability to engage in further military action against Venezuela.  It would have required congressional approval for any such action.  Now, however, the Senate has just re-affirmed that Trump can do any damn thing he pleases in Venezuela and there are no constraints on the felon with the brain of a toddler!  What really galls me, though, is that two Republican Senators, Josh Hawley and Todd Young had initially planned to vote for the resolution but at the last minute, presumably after getting a stern lecture from the Felon, they changed their tiny minds and voted against it – against We the People, and against the human lives in Venezuela.  I just wish that our elected and paid members of Congress would wake the f##k up and do their f##king jobs instead of kissing the Felon’s … er … boots!

And along those same lines …

Today, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, in conjunction with Demcratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, introduced the NATO Unity Protection Act.  This bill, if any other Republicans can find their spines and support it, would prohibit the use of Department of Defense or Department of State funding to blockade, occupy, annex or otherwise assert control over the sovereign territory of a NATO member state.  Needless to say, this is necessary due to Felon Trump’s many and increasingly vile threats against Greenland.  Will it see the light of day?  I doubt it … I seriously doubt that any Republicans in Congress other than perhaps Senators Murkowski and Collins will dare to step forward and do the right thing.  I fully expect to wake up one morning to the news that the United States has invaded Greenland, killed a hundred or so people, maybe more, and kidnapped Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen!

That would put NATO in an untenable position, and most analysts believe it would bring about the end of NATO.  According to Senator Chris Murphy …

“It would be the end of Nato, right? Nato would have an obligation to defend Greenland. Clearly … we would be at war with Europe, with England, with France.”

C’mon, people … WAKE UP!!!  There is a mentally deranged idiot in the Oval Office who is hellbent and determined to start World War III and his sycophants in the Cabinet and in Congress and in the Supreme Court are either stupid as hell or just don’t give a damn about human lives anymore!

And in ICE news … another ICE protestor was shot in Minneapolis yesterday, and meanwhile …

“The Justice Department does not see any basis to open a criminal civil rights probe into the killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, according to a Justice Department official.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement, “There is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation.”

So, I guess the murderer, one Jonathan Ross, walks scot-free while Renee Nicole Good must remain dead, her children must remain motherless, her wife must remain a grieving widow, and a nation of 330 million people must mourn the death of democracy.

F##k ICE … if I were to see an ICEman in a store or on the streets, I would spit in his face!  I don’t carry a gun, don’t own a gun, never plan to own a gun, but to me, the biggest insult one can give is to spit in someone’s face.  It makes it clear exactly what you think of them!

Oh, and one last grrrrrrrrrrrowlie thing … NEVER in the 250-year history of the United States, has a ‘president’ flipped the bird in public at a citizen.  Until Tuesday, that is.  While touring a Ford Motor factory in Dearborn, Michigan, Trump raised his middle finger at a heckler who accused him of being a “pedophile protector”.  I guess maybe the truth hit a little too close to home, eh, for Trump is not only a “pedophile protector” but almost certainly a pedophile himself!  Still … to flip off a hard-working, tax-paying citizen is UNACCEPTABLE.  In so doing, he was flipping us ALL off … telling us exactly what he thinks of us!

Beam me up, Scotty!!!

Who’s Next???

Renee Nicole Good was probably among the least likely of people to be gunned down in broad daylight by Trump’s brownshirts (ICEmen).  She was just a decent person, not a ‘domestic terrorist’ as the regime has labelled her, a mother and a wife, never harmed anyone else in her life.  And yet, she is dead at the hands of Trump and an ICEman named Jonathan Ross.  If it could happen to her, it can happen to me … or you.  Anywhere, anytime.  Let’s see what our friend Robert Reich has to say about it …

You could be next

This is personal.

By Robert Reich

13 January 2026

If agents of the federal government can murder a 37-year-old woman in broad daylight who, as videotapes show, was merely trying to get out of their way, they can murder you.

Even if Trump and his vice president and his secretary of homeland security all claim, contrary to the videotapes, that Renee Nicole Good was trying to kill an agent who acted in self-defense, they could make up the same about you.

Even if Trump describes her as a “professional agitator” and his goons call her a “domestic terrorist,” they could say the same about you regardless of your political views or activism. If you have left-wing political views and are an activist, you’re in greater danger.

How can we believe what the FBI turns up in its investigation, when the FBI is working for Trump and is headed by one of his goons, and is investigating possible connections between Renee Good and groups that have been protesting Trump’s immigration enforcement?

What credence can we give federal officials who are blocking local and state investigators from reviewing evidence they’re collecting?

You could be murdered because Trump’s attorney general has defined “domestic terrorism” to include impeding law enforcement officers. What if you’re merely standing in the way — in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or maybe you’re engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience?

In October, Marimar Martinez, a U.S. citizen in Chicago, was in her car trying to warn people about ICE when she collided with a Border Patrol vehicle. Federal officials say she “rammed” the car. Her lawyers say she was sideswiped by it.

The agent then got out of his car and shot her five times. She survived. The Justice Department then charged her with assaulting a federal officer.

You could be next. All of us need to realize this. The people who are being assaulted and murdered are abiding the law.

The regime has also been grabbing people from their homes who are legally in the United States with permanent status — not just visas permitting them to work or study here but green cards — and whisking them away to prison because they’ve engaged in constitutionally protected speech the regime doesn’t like.

This is what happened to Mahmoud Khalil — who graduated from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, who has a green card, and whose wife is an American citizen.

Plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents appeared at his apartment building on March 8 and then detained him without charges in a Louisiana ICE detention facility for three and a half months. (He missed his graduation and the birth of his first child.)

The Trump regime continues to try to deport him. A federal court heard arguments on October 22 in the regime’s ongoing deportation case against him but has not issued a verdict.

Khalil did nothing illegal. He was in the United States legally. He has never been charged with a crime. He expressed his political point of view — peacefully, nonviolently, non-threateningly. That’s supposed to be permitted — dare I say even encouraged? — in a democracy.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump conceded Khalil was snatched up and sent off because of his politics. “This is the first arrest of many to come,” wrote Trump. “We know there are more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity, and the Trump Administration will not tolerate it.”

Trump could just as well arrest and expel permanent residents who voice support for, say, transgender people or DEI or “woke” or anything else the regime finds “anti-American” and offensive.

What’s to stop the Trump regime from arresting you for, say, advocating the replacement of Republicans in Congress in 2026 and electing a Democrat to the presidency in 2028?

Renee Nicole Good was murdered. Marimar Martinez was shot but survived. Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and jailed and is still fighting deportation. There are many others. The next could be you or someone you love.

What’s at stake isn’t just American democracy. It’s also your safety and security and that of your friends and loved ones. This is personal — to every one of us.

A dictatorship knows no bounds.

We must commit to peacefully fighting this regime, to ending Republican control of Congress in 2026, and to sending this dangerous gang packing in 2028 — assuming we’re still free and alive by then.

♫ Leader Of The Pack ♫

I have played this just once, back in July 2020, and since many of you hadn’t yet discovered Filosofa’s Word yet back then, and since the head popped into my head while I was washing dishes around midnight last night, I figured … why not?  A bit of fun for a gloomy, cold day!

This was written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and producer Shadow Morton. Morton was looking for a follow-up to the first Shangri-Las’ hit, Remember (Walking in the Sand). He had a motorcycle and was part of a motorcycle gang in his youth, so he, Greenwich and Barry decided to use that as the theme. Together, they came up with the rather dramatic story, being sure to name the characters in the lyric (Betty and Johnny) so the listener could form an attachment. A hallmark of the song is the spoken dialogue that sets up the story.

Now here’s something I bet you didn’t know … guess who the piano player was?  No, I’m not telling until you take at least one guess.  It was a young Billy Joel!  Maybe.  According to Joel …

“I know I played piano on a session. The girls themselves weren’t at the session, but that kinda happens all the time, the singers come in later. I played note for note what is on the record, but I wasn’t in the musician’s union – I was about 14 or 15 – so for all I know they may have got a union guy in to do it later. I never got paid, never got a form to show it was me on the record, so I can’t say for sure it’s me, but I like to think it was. Actually, it was my very first recording session – a guitar player friend got me in. I also did ‘Remember (Walkin’ In The Sand)’.  The producer, Shadow Morton, was a strange guy. He had a very theatrical way of producing, he used to wear a cape in the studio. I don’t know if he’d been taking any intoxicating substances – what did I know at that age? – but he was very intimidating to a young kid like me. I just kept my head down hoping no one would find out I wasn’t in the union, but I never got paid, so maybe someone squealed on me.”

According to Jeff Barry, they used a real motorcycle for the sound of the revving engine. Shadow Morton sometimes talked about how they wheeled the motorcycle into the studio to record it, but Barry explained that they attached a microphone to a long cable and recorded it on the street outside the New York City studio (Mirasound Studios on 47th Street). The bike was a Harley Davidson owned by Barry’s engineer, Joe Venneri. Fortunately, Venneri’s Harley was not used to create the crashing sound – that was a sound effect.

Later in 1964, the producers Ron Dante (Sugar, Sugar), Tommy Wynn and Danny Jordan released a parody of this song called “Leader Of The Laundromat,” which they issued under the name The Detergents. In that song, a guy falls for a girl in a laundromat, and it doesn’t end well. This parody went to #19 in the US.

In the UK, this charted three times: first at #11 when it was initially released, then at #3 with a 1972 re-release, followed by a 1976 re-release at #7.  This song has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Twisted Sister, The Chipmunks, and Bette Midler.   An odd bunch, for sure!  I actually listened to the Chipmunks’ version and nearly choked on my tortilla chip laughing!  Ah well …

Leader of the Pack
The Shangri-Las

Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let’s ask her.
Betty, is that Jimmy’s ring you’re wearing?
Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
Uh-uh
By the way, where’d you meet him?

I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me
You get the picture? (yes, we see)
That’s when I fell for (the leader of the pack)

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That’s why I fell for (the leader of the pack)

One day my dad said, “Find someone new”
I had to tell my Jimmy we’re through
(whatcha mean when ya say that ya better go find somebody new?)
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I’m sorry I hurt you (the leader of the pack)

[spoken]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I’ll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!
I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering all the things we’d been through
In school they all stop and stare
I can’t hide the tears, but I don’t care
I’ll never forget him (the leader of the pack)

The leader of the pack – now he’s gone
The leader of the pack – now he’s gone
The leader of the pack – now he’s gone
The leader of the pack – now he’s gone
[fade]

Good People Doing Good Things — A Wedding And A Tie

Today’s first ‘good people’ story brought a tear to my eyes … a hospital staff gave it their all to give one patient as much joy as they possibly could …

From Sunnyskyz

A Colorado hospital threw a surprise wedding for a couple whose 11-year relationship was suddenly cut short when the bride received a devastating cancer diagnosis.

Aliana and Bailey Gleason had always dreamed of getting married someday, but they kept putting it off while waiting for the “perfect” time. Then Aliana received devastating news: she has a rare sarcoma that has spread to her spine, leaving doctors with very limited treatment options.

Suddenly, nothing felt more important than being married.

When staff at HCA HealthOne Swedish Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, learned that the couple had just gotten engaged, they decided to step in and do something extraordinary. In only two days, nurses, doctors, and hospital staff organized a beautiful wedding inside the hospital — completely free — so the couple wouldn’t have to wait.

“There isn’t always a lot you can do,” nurse manager Matt Turrie told 9 News. “But when you can bring love and joy into someone’s life, you do it.”

Even while facing painful treatments and difficult news, Aliana kept smiling. The staff said her strength and spirit inspired everyone around her.

The couple said they felt like their special day was exactly what it was meant to be.

“I wouldn’t change anything,” Bailey Gleason told KUSA.

“Me either,” Aliana Gleason said.

And from Inspiremore

According to a Facebook post, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Deputy pulled the man over for speeding, but quickly learned his story.

“Deputy Dustin Byers with the 4th District recently stopped a driver for speeding on Highway 21. The man explained he was on his way to a funeral and was having a tough day. To top it off, he couldn’t get his tie right. Without hesitation, Deputy Byers helped him out…not just with the knot, but with a moment of kindness he won’t forget,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “𝙍𝙀𝙈𝙄𝙉𝘿𝙀𝙍: compassion still exists, even on the side of the road.”

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Deputy’s act of kindness not only touched the man on the way to the funeral, but thousands of others in the comment section.

“Life is too short to always suspect and always see the negative in everything,” someone wrote.

“Thank you Lord for this moment God continue to allow that deputy to show compassion on his community no matter what the case may be and please Lord protect him,” another person shared.

Just seeing good news made people smile.

“I wish we could have more of these kinds of interactions. Humanity and compassion goes a long way. I pray for the bereaved gentleman and the helpful officer. May God bless them both,” a follower wrote.

A Tragic Tale Of Woe And War – Part II

This is the second part of the fictional series I started on Sunday.

“… Yes, okay, well, that’s good news … somewhat.  You take care, Amanda … we’re taking good care of the kids … they’ve been fine and don’t seem to have a hint that anything’s wrong.  I’m just getting ready to fix them some breakfast now.  Keep us posted, okay?”

As Sam hung up the phone, Mike noticed tears rolling down his cheeks.

“Was that Amanda?  How’s Gordon?  What did she say?  You’re crying … what’s happened?”

“Yes, that was Amanda … the news is … well, I’m not sure I’d call it “good” news, but at least it’s better than it might have been.  Gordon was shot twice in the chest, but the ‘good’ part is that both bullets missed any vital organs, so he is likely to recover.  He’s in a medically-induced coma at the moment, while the doctors try to repair the damage to tissues, arteries, and such.  They have given him an 80% chance of survival – not great, but better than it might have been.”

Mike poured himself a cup of coffee – it didn’t look like he was going to be sleeping any time soon, so he might as well have some coffee.  About that time, the oldest of Amanda & Gordon’s children, Stephen, came into the kitchen.

“Uncle Sam … we’re hungry … can we have some breakfast?”

This brought Sam out of his fog and back into the moment.

“You sure can!  Let’s see … what would you say to some pancakes?”

“YAY!!!!!!!!!  We LOVE pancakes … with lots of syrup!  An’ maybe some chocolate chips, too?”

“Coming right up … give me 15 minutes, ‘k?”

Mike went to the pantry for the pancake mix and chocolate chips, while Sam got out the electric skillet.  Sam mixed the pancake batter, Mike rinsed the fresh berries they had bought last weekend, and together they put together a meal fit for … three beautiful kids who were about to have their lives turned upside down!

During breakfast, Steve, the oldest child who was eight years old last month, asked when their mom would be picking them up.  Sam looked at Mike and Mike very slightly shook his head … now was not the right time to tell them.  Let them enjoy a few more hours of blissful ignorance before their world shattered.

After breakfast, Mike went back upstairs to try to get some sleep and Sam called off work for the day – some things were more important than a day’s pay.  He took the kids to a local park so they could get some fresh air and run off some of the energy that is inherent in young children, but when he saw a truck park across the street and armed government agents getting out of it, he decided it was time to go back home.

Sam’s phone rang at around 4:30.  It was a nurse from the hospital …

“Is this Mr. Sam Springer?”

“Speaking.”

“Mr. Springer, my name is Susan Hathaway and I’m a nurse at University Hospital.  Do you know a Mr. Gordon Gibbs?”

“Yes, Gordon is a dear friend of mine and … I understand he’s in your hospital.  Has something happened?”

“Yes … and I’m not sure what or why, but Mr. Gibbs’ wife was just arrested by government agents and literally dragged out of the building with restraints on both her wrists and her ankles!  As she was being taken out, she screamed your name and phone number and asked me to contact you.”

Sam couldn’t breathe … he felt as if there were a thousand pound weight on his chest …

“Mr. Springer?  Did you hear what I said?  Are you alright?”

Sam gasped for air, tried to find his balance …

“Y-yes, I’m alright.  Did they say … do you know … where they took Amanda?”

“No, we are all stunned … one of the doctors who was on the floor making his afternoon rounds asked one of the agents what they were doing and why, and the agent pulled the gun off his belt and told the doctor to ‘mind his own business if he valued his life’!”

“I-I don’t know what to do!!!  How is Gordon … did he see this happening?”

“No, he wasn’t in the room at the time, as he had just been taken to X-ray.  He isn’t conscious, so he wouldn’t have known what was happening anyway.”

“Okay, well, thank you for calling … I need to contact … someone.  The police?  My lawyer?  I’m just not sure, but thank you.  May I call you back to check on Gordon later?”

“My shift has ended, so I’ll be going home soon, but yes, you may call the hospital and just ask for the ICU nurse when you want to check on him.”

As he pressed the button to disconnect the call, Sam felt completely overwhelmed.  Who to call?  What to do?  He didn’t want to wake poor Mike, but … he couldn’t figure out what to do next, so he headed up the stairs to wake him.

To be continued …

Here is a link to the first part of the story, in case you missed it.

♫ Danny’s Song ♫ (Redux)

I am super tired tonight, and so when I went in search of a song to play, this one popped into my head and I recalled Keith once saying that he used to sing this to his kids when they were young.  Amazing that somedays I can’t remember what I went into the kitchen for, but I can remember what Keith said several years ago!  The mind is a strange and mysterious thing!

Danny’s Song was written by singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins, as a gift for his brother Danny for the birth of his son, Colin.  Although Anne Murray made it famous in 1973, taking the song to #1 in Canada and #7 in the US, this is more associated with Kenny Loggins, and frankly I like the Loggins/Messina version best.  However, since I realize that my opinion is not the only one that counts, I offer both, so you can take your pick.

Danny’s Song
Kenny Loggins

People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one
And we’ve just begun
Think I’m gonna have a son
He will be like she and me, as free as a dove
Conceived in love
Sun is gonna shine above

And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
Bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be alright

Seems as though a month ago I was Beta Chi
Never got high
Oh, was a sorry guy
And now I smile and face the girl that shares my name, yeah
Now I’m through with the game
This boy’ll never be the same

And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
Bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be all right

Pisces Virgo rising is a very good sign
Strong and kind
And the little boy is mine
Now I see a family where there once was none
Now we’ve just begun
Yeah we’re gonna fly to the sun

And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
You bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be all right

Love the girl who holds the world in a paper cup
Drink it up
Love her and she’ll bring you luck
And if you find she helps your mind
Buddy, take her home
Yeah, don’t you live alone
Try to earn what lovers own

And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
You bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be alright
