Glasgow’s Julie McElroy to Take on Edinburgh Marathon with Support Runner Chris Hunter

Glasgow’s inspirational athlete, Dr. Julie McElroy, is set to take on the Edinburgh Marathon on May 26, 2025, with the support of experienced runner Chris Hunter from Victoria Park Road Runners.

Julie, who has cerebral palsy, has become a trailblazer in the world of frame running, a sport that enables individuals with mobility impairments to participate in endurance events using a specialised running frame. After successfully completing the London Marathon in 2024, as well as the Great North Run, Great Scottish Run, and Inverness Half Marathon, Julie is ready to conquer another major challenge in the Scottish capital.

Chris, who joined Victoria Park Road Runners in 2024 and is a Boston Marathon qualifier in April 2025, will be providing vital support to Julie as she pushes towards her goal. Having previously raced in Edinburgh himself, Chris is excited to take on a new role in helping Julie achieve her marathon aspirations.

“Running alongside Julie in the Edinburgh Marathon will be an amazing experience,” said Chris. “The crowd in Edinburgh is fantastic, and I hope to help Julie achieve a personal best and show just how much frame running can be celebrated in major running events.”

Julie’s journey to the Edinburgh Marathon follows her impressive showing at the London Marathon in 2024, where she demonstrated extraordinary resilience and determination. Completing such a prestigious event reinforced her belief that frame running deserves more recognition and support in long-distance running.

In addition to tackling the 26.2-mile course, Julie and Chris are using the marathon to raise funds for Victoria Park Athletics Club’s centenary celebrations, which will take place in five years’ time. All donations will contribute to the club’s development and future events to mark 100 years of excellence in athletics.

Julie credits much of her continuous improvement to her coach, Gordon Innes, whose expertise and dedication have helped her progress through a series of challenging races.

“The journey has been incredible so far, and I am so grateful for the support I’ve received,” said Julie. “Taking on the Edinburgh Marathon with Chris and raising funds for Victoria Park Athletics Club makes this event even more special.”

Chris, a dedicated competitor himself, understands the challenges of long-distance racing and has been preparing alongside Julie to ensure she is in peak condition for race day. His own experience in races ranging from 5k to ultra-distances will be invaluable as he supports Julie through the marathon course.
